Japanese characters in a UTF-8 encoded .txt file are not showing up correctly since upgrade to 4.0

I frequently use Firefox to look at Japanese language UTF-8 .txt files on my local disk. Since the 4.0 upgrade the Japanese text looks like this "牢獄 ろうごく". I've played with various options but nothing seems to work.

Fixed the problem. I set the default encoding to UTF-8 under content--->fonts & colors--->advanced. Doesn't seem to have a negative effect on other pages either.

    Hi ,
    I am recieving a xml file from a third party vendor. it is encoded in UTF-8. while i am reading it i am getting the below error.
    Msg 9420, Level 16, State 1, Line 3

    the characters causing the problem are like è,Ö,è.
     My database default collation is ‘SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS’
    I am using the below query to read the xmlfile.
    declare @xml xml

    how can i read the file successfully. any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    This issue normally happens when the XML file is not in the correct format. To save in the correct format open the xml file and click save as. Choose the encoding option as "UTF-8".

  • Both After Effects & Adobe Media Encode CC giving are not letting me export.

    Dear All,
    Both After Effects & Adobe Media Encode CC giving are not letting me export movies.
    Some times they will, but after one file both programs give me the following error messages.
    After effects:
    “[file path and name].mov. An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted. (-1610153464)"
    AME:
    "Can't read from source."
    I've went through the forum and found threads & pages discussing the problem.
    E.g.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/08/solutions-for-problems-with-quicktime-files-in -after-effects-cc-12-0-because-of-conflict-with-dvcprohdvideoout-quicktime-component.html
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1252092
    After following all the tips and suggestions (from deinstalling quicktime components & audio components to completely reinstalling CC) I'm still experiencing the problems.
    Which leaves me in a bit of a squeeze. I need to export over 144 movies in the coming 2 days and the only way to do this is to quit and open media encoder (or AE) after each single export.
    Not really an option.
    Both problems have the process Adobe QT sever in common, I took this from the console:
    9/26/13 1:02:44.517 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[171]: ([0x0-0x42042].com.adobe.Adobe QT32 Server.application[331]) Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault: 11
    9/26/13 1:02:44.672 PM ReportCrash[354]: Saved crash report for Adobe QT32 Server[331] version 7.0.1 (7.0.1.0) to /Users/martijn/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Adobe QT32 Server_2013-09-26-130244_martijns-MacBook-Pro-2.crash
    System information:
    Retina MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) (16gb ram)
    Mac OS X 10.8.5 (12F37)
    Running Adobe CC (for teams), all apps are up-to-date.
    I don't no why Adobe puts out such a buggy piece of software (I know it has to with Apple's poor 32bit quicktime implimentation, but hey, this was known information no?).
    Upgrading to CC has given our office nothing but problems.
    Hope someone can help to find a work around until Adobe realeases a proper update and solves this problem once and for all.
    All help is much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Martijn

    Hello Tim,
    Thanks for the really quick response!
    Regarding the crash log: it doesn't reference com.apple.audio.CoreAudio (though it did before, so I followed all the steps in your blog post before I posted to this forum).
    I've uploaded the crashlog to:
    http://martijnlambada.com/TMP/AdobeQT32servercrash.zip
    If you want to inspect it. It mentions the DXV codec (which I also uninstalled), but the crash keeps occuring. Also I need to export to DXV since it's the only codec the d3 media
    server accepts (http://d3technologies.com).
    I followed all the steps in the troubleshooting steps.
    Codecs used: I've tried everything from animation to Apple ProRes (including: h264/motion jpeg/uncompressed). With all codecs the Adobe QT32 server keeps crashing (though I can't always reproduce).
    Export destination: Internal SSD (same as where the OS is installed on) + External raid (via firewire & thunderbolt) + external HD via usb 3.0 (tried everything).
    When does the problem start: Really hard to specify, sometimes a day without crashes, sometimes every export for days on end. Sometime after restarting (tried logging out, restarting, switching off and on the computer). With other programs running and with out. Now checking every process active when exporting, and comparing log files.
    Can you export to other formats: See question 1, sometimes I can, sometimes not.
    When you launch AE and/or AME, is QT32 Server running? At what point does it stop running?  Still runing when I open the program. It crashes when exporting (ofter after finishing the first export).
    What component files are in your Library/QuickTime folder?: Currently the folowing:
    AppleAVCIntraCodec
    AppleHDVCodec.component
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    AppleMPEG2Codec.component
    AppleProResCodec.component
    DesktopVideoOut.component
    DVCPROHDCodec.component
    DVCPROHDMuxer.component
    DVCPROHDVideoDigitizer.component
    DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component
    DVCPROHDVideoOutputClock.component
    FCP Uncompressed 422.component
    iChatTheaterPreview.component
    IMXCodec.component
    LiveType.component
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Martijn

  • [SOLVED] Can't save UTF-8 encoded source file in IDE

    I had a problem where I could not save a c++ source file from anjuta using the gtksourceview plugin, but could using the scintilla plugin.  I would get an error message with "invalid byte sequence in conversion input" in the text.  Eclipse CDT also would not save a modified file with a similar error message.
    The fix was to uncomment the proper lines in the file /etc/locale.gen for my locale and run locale-gen as described in the Archlinux wiki article "Configuring locales."
    I did not find any help for this problem using internet searches, so I thought I would document it here.  Just in case someone else fails to setup their locale and runs into the same trouble.

    I think so (haven't checked), but it is a really simple test xml which is not really error prone).
    But the problem is a different one, because I also just tried to read a txt file with some Japanese characters into an NSString using initWithContentsOfURL.
    When I print the string in the console, I only get messed up characters (the latin characters next to the Japanese are displayed fine).
    It is a general problem of reading out an UTF-8 file from an url.
    Spent the whole last night to google something helpful but couldn't find anything. Now I'm tired at work

  • How to save a UTF-8 encoded text file ?

    hi People
    I have a little script which reads the source text from a layer and saves it to a .txt file. This is on a Mac and all was good until recently when I tried opening the .txt file on a PC in Notepad and found my ˚ degree symbols all whack.
    Resaving the .txt file in TextEdit as Unicode (UTF-8) encoding solved the problem, now opens fine in Notepad.
    But ideally I'd like the script to output the .txt as UTF-8 in the first place. It's currently Western (Mac OS Roman). I've tryed adding in myfile.encoding = "UTF8" but the resulting file is still Western (and the special charaters have wigged out again)
    any help greatly appreciated../daniel
        var theComp = app.project.activeItem;
        var dataRO = theComp.layer("dataRO").sourceText;
        // prompt user to save file
        var theFile = new File ("~/Desktop/"+ theComp.name + "_output.txt");
        theFile = theFile.saveDlg("Save an ASCII export file.");
        if (theFile != null) {          // check user didn't cancel dialog
            theFile.lineFeed = "windows";
            //theFile.encoding = "UTF8";
            theFile.open("w","TEXT","????");
            theFile.writeln("move details:");
            theFile.writeln(dataRO.value.toString());
        theFile.close();

    Hi,
    Got it, it seems, the utf-8 standard use 2-bytes (and more) encoding on accents and special characters.
    I found some info there with some code http://ivoronline.com/Coding/Theory/Tutorials/Encoding%20-%20Text%20-%20UTF%208.php
    However there was some error so I fixed it. (However for 3 and 4 bytes characters i didnt test it. So maybe you'll have to change back the 0xbf to 0x3f or something else.)
    So here is the code.
    Header 1
    function convertCharToUTF(character){
        var utfBytes = "";
        c = character.charCodeAt(0)
        if (c < 0x80) {
            utfBytes =  String.fromCharCode (c);
        else if (c < 0x800) {
            utfBytes =  String.fromCharCode (0xC0 | c>>6);
            utfBytes +=  String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c & 0xbF);
        else if (c < 0x10000) {
            utfBytes = String.fromCharCode (0xE0 | c>>12);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c>>6 & 0xbF);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c & 0xbF);
        else if (c < 0x200000) {
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0xF0 | c>>18);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c>>12 & 0xbF);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c>>6 & 0xbF);
            utfBytes =+ String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c & 0xbF);
            return utfBytes
    function convertStringToUTF(stringToConvert){
        var utfString = ""
        for (var i = 0 ; i < stringToConvert.length; i++){
            utfString = utfString + convertCharToUTF(stringToConvert.charAt (i))
        return utfString;
    var theFile= new File("~/Desktop/_output.txt");
    theFile.open("w", "TEXT");
    theFile.encoding = "BINARY"
    theFile.linefeed = "Unix"
    theFile.write("");//or theFile.write(String.fromCharCode (0xEF) + String.fromCharCode (0xEB) + String.fromCharCode (0xBF)
    theFile.write(convertStringToUTF("Your stuff éàçËôù"));
    theFile.close();

  • How to read UTF-8 encoded text file randomly?

    I am trying to read a text file which has been encoded in UTF-8. The problem is that I need to access the file randomly. The RandomAccessFile is a low-level class and there seems to be no-way to wrap it in InputStreamReader so that UTF-8 encoding can be done on-the-fly. Is there any easy way to do that. Below is the simplified version of my program.
    import java.io.*;
    public class Test{
            public Test(String filename){
                    try{
                            RandomAccessFile rafTemIn = new RandomAccessFile(new File(filename), "r");
                            while(true){
                                    char chr = rafTemIn.readChar();
                                    System.err.println(chr);
                    } catch (EOFException e) {
                            System.err.println("File read.");
                    } catch (IOException e) {
                            System.err.println("File input error");
            public static void main(String[] args){
                    Test t= new Test("template.idx");
    }

    The file that I am going to read could be few hundreds of MBs or GBs. Hence, I will index interesting items in the file. The index file contain the keyword and the byte offset in the file. So, I will need to seek to any byte to read it. The file could be UTF-8 encoded XML or UTF-8 encoded plain text.
    Also, would like to add-up that in the sample program above I am reading the file sequentially. The concerned class has another method which actually does the reading randomly. If this helps, I am pasting the simplified version of code again but this also includes the said method.
    import java.io.*;
    public class Test{
            long bloc;
            long eloc;
            RandomAccessFile rafTemIn;
            public Test(String filename){
                    bloc=0L;
                    eloc=0L;
                    try{
                            rafTemIn = new RandomAccessFile(new File(filename), "r");
                            while(true){
                                    char chr = rafTemIn.readChar();
                                    System.err.println(chr);
                    } catch (EOFException e) {
                            System.err.println("File read.");
                    } catch (IOException e) {
                            System.err.println("File input error");
            public String getVal(String templateName){
                    String stemval=null;
                    try {
                            rafTemIn.seek(bloc); //bloc is a long value for beginng location to read from. It changes.
                            byte[] b = new byte[(int)(eloc - bloc + 1L)];
                            rafTemIn.read(b,0,(int) (eloc - bloc + 1L));
                            stemval = new String(b,"UTF-8");
                    } catch(IOException eio) {
                            System.err.println("Template Dump file IO error.");
                    return stemval;
            public static void main(String[] args){
                    Test t= new Test("template.idx");
                    System.out.println(t.getVal("wikipedia"));
    }

  • International characters not showing up correctly in Podcast Title-Is UTF-8

    In the 'Podcast Information' window that pops up, the Episode title is not getting rendered correctly but the details show up fine. Both have chinese characters.
    Any pointers for resolving this would be appreciated.

    If sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, then there must be a difference in the way you are doing it. And you can work out what's happening from analyzing what you're doing when it works compared with what you're doing when it doesn't work.
    For example, if you type the description into the blogging software, you might just be typing the ' key. While some writing software (word for example) will automatically turn on smart quotes which your blogging software will be escaping into HTML code. The character ' doesn't need escaping, but smart quotes do.
    Hope this helps,
    Greg

  • Defect:  Sometimes opened sql/txt files are unreadable in worksheet.

    I haven't pinpointed the exact sequence of events yet. Sorry.
    I work on two different machines. One: 64bit running Vista. Two: 32bit running XP.
    They have the same fonts and operating system languages.
    I keep a set of files I'm working on on a usb stick (which appears to be working perfectly).
    Sometimes, but not always, when I open up a one of those files on the key, it shows up as square-box gibberish in the sql worksheet window.
    I can open the same file with notepad just fine, and paste the contents into the same sql worksheet just fine.
    But it's a darned nuisance, not to mention an opportunity to overwrite my work if I forget to close the open file in notepad and save it later.

    I've had a few moments to try to track down more info on this problem.
    I work on a 64bit vista machine at work and a 32bit windows xp machine at home.
    I'm at home, so I'll post what I discovered here, and then post what happens on the 64bit when I get to work tomorrow.
    All the files I'm discussing have only the standard ascii characters in them.
    Both machines have the same fonts and font setup, and the same OS language. I do not believe this is a font or language issue.
    I believe it may be an encoding issue.
    I opened up a .txt file with sql developer. It happened to work fine this time.
    I opened up the same .txt file with notepad, and saved it to a new .sql extension. It opened fine with sql developer.
    I opened up the original .txt file with notepad and saved it to a new .txt filename and chose the unicode encoding instead of the ansi encoding that notepad was defaulting to. I also used notepad to save the file to another .txt file and chose a utf-8 encoding for it.
    I opened up the unicode encoding file using sql developer and got gibberish. Upon closer inspection, I could actually read the code in the file, but each character had a box between it. I'll use [] to represent a box. So, my first line looked like this: [] [] []b[]e[]g[]i[]n[].
    I opened up the utf encoding file using sql developer and got some gibberish, but most of the file looked fine.
    My environment setting had UTF-8 as a setting.
    I changed the environment setting to UTF_16, and re-opened the files.
    The file saved as unicode is now readable and the other files are now complete gibberish.
    I'm guessing that my work machine has a different default encoding scheme at the operating system level, because I believe both are set up with the same settings inside sql developer. (I used the same written instructions for both.)
    I'll post what I find at work tomorrow.
    If this turns out to be correct, it would be nice if sql developer automatically checked the encoding of the file when it was loaded and acted accordingly. That appears to be a possible course of action, because when I open up each of the encoded files in notepad, it (a) displays each of them correctly automatically and (b) when I do a save as, it shows the encoding the file was last saved in as the default value.

    Hi paulique, the simplest next test would be to disable all plugins and extensions (except Shockwave Flash, which is pretty much indispensable) here, restart Firefox, and see whether your font works without them:

    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

  • How to get .txt files to also show up as attachments

    If I receive an email with 4 attachments (3 .pdf files and 1 .txt file), I get 3 attachments only, and the text file is displayed within the body of the e-mail, but not as an attachment. This happens with some of my clients who send me mail, but not all; so I'm wondering if it's something the sender can do, rather than it being a problem with my .mac mail? Or, is it that they may be sending me ASCII files, that don't show up as attachments?
    Hope someone can help; we've been trying for 3 months to solve! Thank you

  • Lion's service to encode media files is not installed

    On my MacBook Pro the video and media encoder service is not installed. If I right-click on a movie file in Finder the option “Encode Selected Video Files” is not available, same for audio files. I tried with a lot of different source files, it's not available.
    Any idea why or how to get it?

    I think I found the solution (at least for me):
    I had the same problem, that these options weren’t in my context menu and also couldn’t be found under the services. But for some reason when I log in with a different user, the options were there…
    What I did, I went to “/System/Library/Services/” and there the two ‘workflows’ were.
    I copied them and placed them into “/Users/(me)/Library/Services”. Attention, for some reason the Library folder is now hidden in Lion, but you can still access it via the “go to folder” function (cmd+shift+g) and typing in the path, for example “/Users/Tom/Library/”.
    After copying the files I had the questioned options active in my services, and they were already checked and in my context menu.
    My thoughts to the problem: inside the Library folder of my other user account (where these options were already available) was no “Services” folder.
    Maybe this “bug” only happens, when you have custom user-specific services installed – in my case it was my “EspionageMenue.service”, which was only installed on my regular user account, but not on the other one.
    Hope this helps someone else as well =)
    Cheers, L

  • Cannot parse UTF-8 encoded xml files

    I have been having issues parsing files that were encoded with UTF-8. If I save the file as standard ANSI and parse it I do not have the issues.
    Is there a reason this can occur?
    Here is the error I am getting:

    As I mentioned before this only occurs if the file is encoded in UTF-8 so I am not sure if there is any extra steps needed when parsing these type of files. I am using the latest xalan parser and the xerces processor that apache provides.
    If you need any other information please let me know.
    thank you.

    I found that the issue was I was using an older version of Xalan and when updated it fixed the problem. Also there are issues with parsing UTF-8 on win9x machines you should be on Win2k/XP to not encounter errors.

  • UTF-8 encoded property files with RessourceBundle

    Hello everybody!
    Is there a way to force RessourceBundle to use a specific kind of encoding for the property files I've defined?
    I plan to encode the property files for my application using UTF-8. This will avoid problems, when e.g. the labels for some buttons will get names in Spanish, German, Frensh etc..
    Problem: the class RessourceBundle seems to use an InputStream and not a Reader. Therefore I have problems forcing the encoding UTF-8 used in my property files.
    Is there any solution to this?
    Kind regards and thank's for your response,
    Marcus.

    Hi Marcus,
    You should be able to do what you're trying. Instead of backing your resource bundle with properties files, use a ListResourceBundle and back it with the corresponding class files. Create your *.java files in UTF8 and use the -encoding UTF8 argument to javac. Any *.java files you've previously created in ASCII will compile correctly using -encoding UTF8 (one of the nice features of UTF8).
