JAR file trouble.

I placed some .class files in a .jar file by way of the Command Line and now they would work except for one error message that pops up every time I click on it:
"Java Virtual Machine Launcher
Failed to load Main-Class manfiest atribute from:
D:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Java Programs\Calculator\Calculator.jar"
Does anyone know how to get a jar file to work properly? Does anyone know whether I am trying to implement the .jar file properly? Thanks

When I made my Manifest file I only put in the text: Main-Class: Calculator
I didn't realize that you have to use the version to. I don't think you have to specify the version. But you should end the manifest with a newline (that is with a blank line) or the last line is ignored. Perhaps this is why the Main-Class wasn't picked up. (This is mentioned in the Tutorial link posted above).
Another thing I was doing wrong is putting .class at the end of the file name which brings up a good question: Why is it set up so sometimes you need the extension and other times you don't?.class (and .java) extensions belong to file names, not class names. So, for instance, you use use an extension when you tell javac what file to compile, but not when you tell java what class's main() method to run.
So putting .class in the manifest's Main-Class entry is wrong because you are specifying the main class not the main class file. This is typical because you often have a class Foo without having any file Foo.class.
One confusing exception isthe class=... part of an <applet> tag. Browsers cheerfully accept either class="Foo" and class="Foo.class".

  • Coldfusion having trouble while loading classes in Jar file

    Hi everybody.
    I have some weird problem with Coldfusion.
    I try to use a Jar file, that i put in the Coldfusion classpath. It works well (i can call some classes in the Jar file using the createObject() function ), but not every classes.
    For example,
    <cfset ServiceObject = createObject("java", "com.google.api.ads.dfp.v201204.NetworkServiceInterface")>
    <cfdump var="#ServiceObject#">
    this call works well, and i can the see the dump file.
    <cfset dfpServiceObject2 = createObject("java", "com.google.api.ads.dfp.v201204.NetworkServiceSoapBindingStub")>
    <cfdump var="#ServiceObject2#">
    This call fails, and i got a 500 error :

    If i check in the Jar file, i can see the NetworkServiceSoapBindingStub class. Moreover, when i do the same thing directly in a java application, it works well. Nevertheless, Coldfusion is not able to load this class. How can this be possible? Do you have any idea to help me?

    I have not been able to resolve this to date. Does anyone have half a clue as to what I might be doing wrong?

  • Trouble using .JAR files

    I just began programming and the first program I tried worked perfectly at school, but when I got home, it didn't work too well. I think the problem arises when I attempt to import the .JAR file apcslib.jar. At school all I had to do was move the .JAR files provided by the teacher into the C:\j2sdk1.4.2_01\jre\lib\ext folder. Here at home, it doesn't seem to work. It compiles, but the program won't run. Could it be that at school we use Win 98 and I have XP. Help is appreciated. Thanks alot.

    For God's sake, DON'T put your stuff in JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext. That's NOT what it's for.
    Learn how to set CLASSPATH every time you compile and run Java. Do it either on the command line or in the shell script you use to run your app. That way you won't depend on having a particular machine setup for your app (very important if you ever have to deploy something in an environment other than your own) and anyone using your app will have the CLASSPATH spelled out for them. If you don't tell another user to put all that junk in the JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext directory, how will they know?
    When you compile, do it like this:
    javac -classpath file-1.jar;file-2.jar;file-n.jar *.javaWhen you run, do it like this:
    java -classpath file-1.jar;file-2.jar;file-n.jar your-app-nameYou get a ClassNotFoundException when the class loader can't find that file in your CLASSPATH. Learn how to set the CLASSPATH properly. That'll take care of this problem.
    By the way, you're not alone. CLASSPATH must be the #1 newbie problem, and everyone is tripped by it at first. (I was.) But do take the time to make sure you understand how to do it properly. If you continue to write Java, it'll pay dividends. - MOD

  • Deleting file from .jar file

    I m having trouble with the Forum search, so sorry if this question has been answered before in this forum.
    If I create a .jar (or an .ear) file, then open the file using Winzip and then delete a file from the zip, does it corrupt the .jar file? I ran into such a problem recently where I could not deploy the application because the .ear file still contained references to the deleted file.

    No, Winzip doesn't corrupt jar files. But if you have something else that expects to find X in the jar file and you deleted X, it isn't surprising that problems arise.

  • Images in Jar files

    Hi,
    I am creating a recipe book application. Everything is exactly how I want to so I am trying to make a jar file with it.
    On the first screen that loads there is one image, when I make the jar file it doesn't seem to be able to find the image once I am outside of eclipse and running the jar.
    I have created a folder in called resources in my scr folder (src/resources) this is where I am storing the image.

    ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("resources/RecipeMagic1_5"));Any insight on how to get the image from inside of the jar file would be great
    Forgot to add, it either throws a NullPointerException or a FileNotFoundException in the catch clause of addPic()

    Ok, so it works good on Mac, but if I try to use it on Windows it will not load the image,
    Here is the code that works on Mac but not windows:
    private void addPic(){
              try{
                   String imgLocal = System.getProperty("user.dir");
                   if(System.getProperty("os.name").contains("Windows")){

                   else
                        imgLocal = "resources/RecipeMagic1_5/RecipeMagic1_5.gif";
                   ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource(imgLocal));
                   JLabel pic = new JLabel(ii);
                   p.add(pic);
              catch(Exception e){
                   JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Image Load Error","ERROR", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
                   e.printStackTrace();
         }I get an Image Load Error on Windows, but the same file on Mac runs perfect

  • Format of jar file

    i need to know format of jar file, from buffer's view.
    i.e. zip file is in format of structs: local_file_head, central_file_head etc (in c/c++ sense).

    Best of luck to you then, if it isn't too much trouble could you post back when you find your answer and enlighten us as to what the differences are in physical file layout between the jar file and zip file? I, for one, would be most interested in your findings. It's obvious that we won't be able to help you with this, but maybe you could help the folk who come here looking for this answer.

    Presumably i know zip file format.
    Presumably u don't know c++ at all.
    You are operating under pretty slim evidence to make such a statement, but, since it's relevance to this forum is pretty much nil, I suppose that sort of shoddy thought isn't too damaging to your central point.

  • Using a Jar file into my jar project (Applet)

    Hy,
    I would like to know how I have to do to put a jar library in my jar file (containing my classes) ?
    I use only 2 classes of that particular jar library (Regex.class & RegRes.class), and when I only put the jar file (patbinfree153.jar), the applet stops when its reaches the first line where i use this class.
    this line :
    Regex Mon_Regex = new Regex("(([<][iI][mM][gG][^>]+)[sS][rR][cC][=][\"]{0,1}([^\"> ]*))");However, it works when I launch the applet in AppletViewer, but doesn't work anymore when I create a jar file, and open it through my web browser. (I signed already my jar file, and it works until it reaches this line). That it to say that the jvm can find the 2 external classes when I run the program trough Eclipse, but can't find them when I create my package .jar. (I hope I am clear)
    Do I need to extract the folders of this jar file ? Because I dont think the import works with those two classes. Or can I just put those 2 classes like my own classes, in this case, what to write for the import line ?
    the import I do :
    import com.stevesoft.pat.*;Thanks ^^

    I think I found a beginnig of solution, but I still have trouble.
    In the tutorial you gave me, it is said to add the following line in the manifest file to use jar in jar :
    Class-Path: JAR-FILE.jar(here is the source : http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/deployment/jar/downman.html)
    I did it, it works fine locally, but when i put my html, jar, files on my web site, my applet seams not to find the other jar file again.
    Locally, the architecure is the following :
    \upload4.html
    \upload4.jar (its manifest have the class-path line linking with patbinfree153.jar)
    \patbinfree153.jar (contains 2 classes I need)I uploaded the same architecture on my web site, but it doesn't work. The applet stops when it reaches the 1st line where I need one of the patbinfree153 classes.
    Any idea ? :-)

  • How to use schema files stored in a jar file

    I am in a great trouble in accessing the schema files in the jar file. I have to validate my xml files against those schema files while parsing the xml file. I am unable to get the path of the schema files.
    I am getting the path as
    E:/ConfigUtility/schemas.jar!/Schema.xsd
    which is not a valid path name for windows. Plese help me and send me some code how to access a schema file that is in the jar file.
    thanks and regards,
    Krishna.

    Run the program from command line, this way you will see the errors, if any.
    example.: java -jar theJarfile.jar
    I was successful in creating a comm application. I placed the win32com.dll in the same directory of my application jar file and all worked.
    I also extracted the comm.jar , and jar'd my app with the extracted comm files to make one jar.
    I also had a fileWriter() to get the clients jre path and my app would write the javax.properties file to the correct place.
    It took me severel weeks and late nights to accomplish this, but it was all necessary to be able to install only my app, and not a bunch of api's that were needed.

  • How to Insert a Text File in a jar file?

    Hi!,
    I have a program which runs smoothly both from the IDE and also from the .jar file when it is on the Hard Disk. When i copied everything onto a CD, the .jar file runs but when it comes to access a text file it pops up the message, which should pop up when a FileNotFoundException is encountered. Now i am using relative paths, in fact i tried to load the whole thing from a pen drive and it works fine as well. I think that if the text file is included in the jar file itself, it might work from the CD as well, but i dont know how to do it. can anyone pls tell me how i can solve this problem?
    Thx in advance, Spi_Mlt

    OK this might give you some trouble (gave me trouble for a long time) so I will try to help you.
    1. in your code load the file as a resources not a FileObject or a local stream, this is what I mean...
    A_stream_that_best_fits_your_needs = getClass().getResourceAsStream("fileName");
    // something like that...if you don't know streams google it2. put a copy of your text file in the same folder as the .java file that loads it and a copy where the .class file that loads it (if they are in the same directory then it just easier than for you).
    3. when compiling the jar include the text file in it!
    Hope that helps!

  • Alternate drives in Jar file Class-Path attribute

    Hello, all. I am working on a project that I would like to package into a single jar file for simple execution. At my place of work classes from EJB are stored on a different drive from where I am doing the development. I am having trouble accessing those classes from the Jars I am creating. When I try the following manifest:
    Main-Class: MyPackage.MyClass
    Class-Path: U:\someFolder
    the application will not start, saying that MyPackage.MyClass cannot be found. This is despite MyPackage.MyClass being properly packaged into the Jar file, as verified by a jar t operation. When I leave off the drive letter in the Class-Path attribute:
    Main-Class: MyPackage.MyClass
    Class-Path: someFolder
    the application starts and executes properly right up until a class from someFolder is needed, at which point exceptions begin to be thrown.
    Any ideas will be much appreciated!
    John Todd

    I was eventually able to find the answer to my own question: Jars do not accept absolute paths at all, only relative paths. Thus, the alternate drive approach will not work. Fortunately I was able to find an alternate solution.

  • Editing a JAR file?

    First problem is that you'll need to decompile and re-compile the source which might or might not work without any problems (jad is a halfway passable decompiler).
    The next problem is that it might not be allowed to modify the .jar file at all, but that depends heavily on the laws of your location.
    Any suggestions?Best solution based on correctness and reducing your workload: get the vendor of the .jar file to fix the problem (either make the paths configurable or at least make it use relative paths).

  • Accessing web application JAR files from applet

    I've got an applet which is part of a web application.
    All the web application JARs are in the webapps/myappl/WEB-INF/lib directory, and I
    can't seem to place anything in that directory on the archive attribute of <OBJECT> tag.
    I'm running into trouble because I'm sending objects from the servlet to the applet and keep getting classnot found during deserialization because I've missed some jar file on the archive attribute. I've had to copy lots of jar files up to where the codebase in the HTML file is to make this run. My question is this.
    Is it better to just change the tomcat security policy file (catalina.policy in tomcat conf directory) so that the JARs are directly accessible and I don't have to copy them from WEB-INF/lib???? Has anyone done this before? What would the line look like?
    I'm assuming that I have to follow the instructions (THAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND)

    // directory, or even to individual jar files in the /WEB-INF/lib/ directory.
    // For instance, assume that the standard "examples" application
    // included a JDBC driver that needed to establish a network connection to the
    // corresponding database and used the scrape taglib to get the weather from
    // the NOAA web server.  You might create a "grant" entries like this:
    // The permissions granted to the context root directory apply to JSP pages.
    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/-" {
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "dbhost.mycompany.com:5432", "connect";
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "*.noaa.gov:80", "connect";
    // The permissions granted to the context WEB-INF/classes directory
    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/classes/-" {
    // The permission granted to your JDBC driver
    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/lib/driver.jar" {
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "dbhost.mycompany.com:5432", "connect";
    // The permission granted to the scrape taglib
    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/lib/scrape.jar" {
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "*.noaa.gov:80", "connect";
    // };

    Thank you for your reply.
    As I mentioned in my first post I had seen a couple of posts mentioning ServletContext before, but dismissed them as I am not using any servlets of my own. However, since you showed me exactly how it was used I realised I could probably just use a dummy servlet to get this information.
    The following page suggests a couple of techniques for doing just this.

    So I think that's me sorted, cheers.
