JAR Files...great

So...me and some friends wrote some personal financial software (pure java) and it is pretty much complete. With only one problem though. An execitable like file that can be clicked on and ran (yes, I know a JAR File) but we have 18 text files used as help files and a database (Access...java level 1 standard odbc jdbc bridge driver...I know not the best idea either) and we have to get those files to be read by any computer we install our program on. There in lies my question...
I have not work with JAR files very much but do know that they can be a pain. Is it possible while using a jar to install those 18 help files and the database onto the user's computer. Know where they are and interact with them. Thank you for any help.

you can zip or tar all your files and distribute them
there is no need for a jar or exe
the access database is another story
if you need to install that then your client needs to install or you need an installer (MSI or whatever) program

  • Yet another problem getting a .jar file working on Mountain Lion

    The program I need to run is used for generating sounds. Its a simple java program, set up in a Windows .msi container: http://innertotality.com/?q=node/9
    I currently have the most up to date Java build from Oracle, according to their online test: v7 update 15. However, it shows up in Terminal after a java -version command as 1.6.0_41.
    Whatever version it is, I can't get this program running on it. I've pulled the .msi file apart to get the cab file, pulled that apart to get my jar file, in this case "headwave.jar". Clicking on it makes the JRE icon appear in the dock and do its dance, then it closes down. I can repeat that all I want and never get a running app out of it. I've opened the console up and watched for messages. This is all I've managed to get:
    2/23/13 9:58:44.218 PM login[2871]: USER_PROCESS: 2871 ttys000
    Nothing more, and I've only seen that once. I get more out of Console simply dragging a word around in this box to edit this post.
    If anyone could shed some light on what I need to do to get this running, I would greatly appreciate it. There are very few Mac OS X sound tools available to do what I need so this is really holding my project back. Most everything out there has to do with professional or amateur audio editing, not pure tone generation. I tried ToneGen and it just isn't doing what I need, and Perfect Tone and Tone Generator X haven't been updated for Intel Macs.

    No I haven't, but I just tried it. I tried to cd to the desktop (worked), found the Headwave folder with ls and then cd into it, found the jar folder I extracted earlier (disk1), cd into it, etc etc. I found HeadWave.jar and knew I had the right directory. java -jar HeadWave.jar gave me the following:

  • Application works in jdeveloper but not as standalone jar file

    Hi All
    We have developed an application using BI Publisher APIs,it works as expected through JDevelper,however when I try to deploy it to a jar file a run it through command line it gives me No class found exception for
    javax/xml/rpc/Service class factory.. thinking that the class is not present.I have extracted the jar file but could find the class file in the expected directory........anyhelp would greatly be appreciated.
    Regards
    Venkatesh

    Hi Venkatesh,
    Few questions.
    1. What is your JDeveloper version? (Always better to post your JDev version along with the question, which would help us to help you better).
    2. Did you try adding webserviceclient.jar to the classpath? (Search in your JDev installation directory for the location of this jar file).

  • Classloader won't let me delete jar file!

    Hi-
    I am writing a classloader that runs main from a class called MyMain. MyMain loads classes from a jar file called MattTable.jar. I need to be able to delete the jar file once the classes are loaded from it, or even just delete it at the end of the program. Either way, the classloader will not release it so I cannot delete the jar file until after my program finishes. I want to be able to delete it from with in my code after the method is invoked.
    URL urls[] = new URL[] { new File(".").toURL() };
    URLClassLoader loader = new URLClassLoader( urls );
    Class c = loader.loadClass(mainClass);
    Method m1 = c.getMethod("main", new Class[] { args.getClass() });
    //main loads classes from an outside jar file
    m1.invoke( null, new Object[] {args} );
    //Here is where I want to delete the jar file
    //I would even accept file.deleteOnExit() but this won't work either
    If anyone can help me figure out how to delete this file, it would be a great help!
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi,
    I've created a small classloader for jar files which releases the handle every time a class is loaded. It might still need some optimization, but at least it works:import java.util.zip.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class ZipClassLoader extends ClassLoader {
         private Hashtable classes = new Hashtable();
         private File f;
         public ZipClassLoader(String zipFileName) {
              this (new File(zipFileName));
         public ZipClassLoader(File zipFile) {
              f = zipFile;
         public Class loadClass(String className) throws ClassNotFoundException {
              return (loadClass(className, true));
         public synchronized Class loadClass(String className, boolean resolve) throws ClassNotFoundException {
              if (classes.containsKey(className)) return (Class)classes.get(className);
              ZipFile zipFile = null;
              BufferedInputStream bis = null;
              byte[] res = null;
              try {
                   zipFile = new ZipFile(f);
                   ZipEntry zipEntry = zipFile.getEntry(className.replace('.', '/')+".class");
                   res = new byte[(int)zipEntry.getSize()];
                   bis = new BufferedInputStream(zipFile.getInputStream(zipEntry));
                   bis.read(res, 0, res.length);
              } catch (Exception ex) {
              } finally {
                   if (bis!=null) {
                        try {
                             bis.close();
                        } catch (IOException ioex) {}
                   if (zipFile!=null) {
                        try {
                             zipFile.close();
                        } catch (IOException ioex) {}
              if (res == null) return super.findSystemClass(className);
              Class clazz = defineClass(className, res, 0, res.length);
              if (clazz == null) throw new ClassFormatError();
              if (resolve) resolveClass(clazz);
              classes.put(className, clazz);
              return(clazz);
    }This is the test program I've created. It loads a class from the Apache log4j jar file, and deletes the file when the class is loaded:import java.io.File;
    public class Test {
         public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
              File f = new File("C:\\jartest\\log4j-1.2.6.jar");
              ZipClassLoader zl = new ZipClassLoader (f);
              Class c = zl.loadClass ("org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender", true);
              Object o = c.newInstance();
              System.out.println (o.getClass().getName());
              f.delete();
    }

  • Images in Jar files

    Hi,
    I am creating a recipe book application. Everything is exactly how I want to so I am trying to make a jar file with it.
    On the first screen that loads there is one image, when I make the jar file it doesn't seem to be able to find the image once I am outside of eclipse and running the jar.
    I have created a folder in called resources in my scr folder (src/resources) this is where I am storing the image.
    The method near the bottom (private void addPic()) is where I am having troubles.
    package recipe1_5;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import javax.imageio.*;
    import java.awt.image.*;
    * This provides an entry point into the program
    * as well as the first window
    * the main() function is at the bottom
    public class Main implements ActionListener {
         JFrame f = new JFrame();
         Container p = f.getContentPane();
         JButton newR = new JButton("Add a New Recipe");
         JButton oldR = new JButton("Look Up An Old Recipe");
         JLabel title = new JLabel("Please make a selection");
         public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
              String whichButton = e.getActionCommand();
              if(whichButton.equals("Add a New Recipe")){
                   @SuppressWarnings("unused")
                   Recipe newRecipe = new Recipe();
                   f.setVisible(false);
                   f.dispose();
              if(whichButton.equals("Look Up An Old Recipe")){
                   @SuppressWarnings("unused")
                   OldRecipeChooser orc = new OldRecipeChooser();
                   f.setVisible(false);
                   f.dispose();
         }//END actionPerformed
         public Main(){
              f.setSize(200,300);
              f.setLocation(500,100);
              f.setTitle("Recipe Magic");
              p.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
              p.add(title);

                        imgLocal += "/RecipeMagic1_5.gif";
                   BufferedImage image = ImageIO.read(new File(System.getProperty("user.dir" + imgLocal)));
                   JLabel pic = new JLabel(new ImageIcon(image));
                   p.add(pic);
              catch(Exception e){
                   JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Image Load Error","ERROR", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
                   e.printStackTrace();
         public static void main(String args[]){
              Main m = new Main();
    }//END class ChooseWindowI have tryed this two different ways. The first how it is. And the second with something like this:
    ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("resources/RecipeMagic1_5"));Any insight on how to get the image from inside of the jar file would be great
    Forgot to add, it either throws a NullPointerException or a FileNotFoundException in the catch clause of addPic()

    Ok, so it works good on Mac, but if I try to use it on Windows it will not load the image,
    Here is the code that works on Mac but not windows:
    private void addPic(){
              try{
                   String imgLocal = System.getProperty("user.dir");
                   if(System.getProperty("os.name").contains("Windows")){
                        imgLocal = "resources\\RecipeMagic1_5\\RecipeMagic1_5.gif";
                   else
                        imgLocal = "resources/RecipeMagic1_5/RecipeMagic1_5.gif";
                   ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource(imgLocal));
                   JLabel pic = new JLabel(ii);
                   p.add(pic);
              catch(Exception e){
                   JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Image Load Error","ERROR", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
                   e.printStackTrace();
         }I get an Image Load Error on Windows, but the same file on Mac runs perfect

  • .jar file suddenly not working

    I have some minimal experience working with .jar files, but I am baffled here.
    Recently, the jar file for one of my programs stopped working. I had just made a change to my main class, so i repackaged the jar. Now it says "Can't find main class" when I try to run it. It will only work if I add the line
    Class-Path: . (there is a period there)
    to my manifest.
    This would be fine, but I want to use exe4j to make it into a Windows executable. exe4j must do something where it does not honor the mainifest settings, because the executable gives out a "can't find main class" error no matter what.
    What has happened? It is only an issue with this program, i have repackaged several others to test, and they work without the "Class-Path" workaround. I'm pretty sure that it's not something in the nature of the program itself, because it worked eariler, and my only change was a small one (the text of a few JLabels).
    I have made sure that my main class is in the root of my jar file, and I have the Main-Class attribute correctly set in my manifest. The program runs fine outside the jar, but displays this odd behavior only when "jarred".
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    also, it's only the one class that's affected.
    I tried setting the Main-Class to other classes in the jar, and that worked fine. When I tried to make a workaround, making one of the other classes' main call the one I wanted, i got a "fatal exception" error. I'm pretty sure it still couldn't find the file.

  • Problem deploying connector: META-INF/ejb-jar.xml not found in jar file

              Has anyone seen this problem:
              I built Sun's Blackbox implementation and packaged
              it identical to the BlackBoxNoTx.rar included with
              Weblogic's 'jconnector' sample (even using the same
              ra.xml and weblogic-ra.xml). When I try to deploy
              it, the server reports:
              java.io.FileNotFoundException:
              META-INF/ejb-jar.xml not found in jar file
              I have no idea why the server thinks my connector
              is an EJB. If I deploy the BlackBoxNoTx.rar included
              with the sample, everything works without a hitch.
              The only variable that I'm changing in my BlackBoxNoTx.rar
              is that I build the Blackbox classes myself--otherwise,
              the RAR packagings are identical. Any assistance is
              greatly appreciated since I'm banging my head against
              a wall...
              Thanks,

              I was finally able to resolve this one. On the odd chance that someone else encounters
              the same problem, here's what went wrong:
              My RAR file had two directories: 'META-INF' and 'meta-inf'. The first was created
              by the jar tool and contained the manifest.mf file. The second I created manually
              and it contained my ra.xml and weblogic-ra.xml. When I examined the RAR using
              any tools or I extracted the contents, it looked like it only contained one directory:
              META-INF (because NT is case-insensitive).

  • Jar file and classpath problem

    I0m writing a program that use the kunststoff.jar Look&Feel.
    Now I would like to put all I'm writing into a jar file but I always have a NoClassFoundException when I try to start my application.
    here is a MANIFEST:ME I'm using:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Created-By: 1.4.2-beta (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    Main-Class: JListaR.JListaR
    Class-Path: kunststoff.jar img\ .why this don't work?

    Unfortunately you can't embed jars within a jar and
    expect them to be referencable for the classpath from
    outside the main jar. The "Class-Path" attribute in
    the manifest is used to refer to other jar files
    outside of your jar file.
    The usual approach to solve this problem is to unpack
    the jar files you want to embed and then rejar
    everything together in one big jar file again. This
    isn't always a great approach though, I know I'm
    looking for an alternative. So far my only alternative
    is dynamic class loading using a classloader, however
    this isn't great if you need to refer to several
    hundreds or even thousands of classes.thank you very mach...now I understand because it dosen't work correctly!

  • How to use the COMM API in a JAR file

    I have developed an application, using the NetBeans IDE, to communicate with a modem over the COM1 serial port using the Java Comm API. The application works fine within the IDE, but when a JAR file is created and "double-clicked", the application launches correctly, but when the code is executed to "talk" over the COM1 serial port - nothing happens. No exceptions and no warnings are thrown. My environment is XP, SP1.
    The manifest file is as follows:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Class-Path: ../j2sdk1.4.2/jre/lib/ext/TimerBean.jar ../j2sdk1.4.2/jre/
    lib/ext/AbsoluteLayout.jar ../j2sdk1.4.2/jre/lib/ext/comm.jar
    Created-By: NetBeans IDE
    Specified-By: Projects/TheApp/Files/TheApp.jarContent
    Main-Class: Main
    According to the Comm API installation instructions, the following files are copied:
    copy comm.jar \j2sdk1.4.2\jre\lib\ext
    copy wind32com.dll \j2sdk1.4.2\bin
    copy javax.comm.properties \j2sdk1.4.2\jre\lib
    I suspect it has something to do with the paths.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Thanks for your input, but after trying what you suggested the problem still exists. I think your right to be suspicous of the javax.comm.properties file. The application, that worked in the IDE, exhibits the same behavoir as the JAR file if the javax.comm.properties file is removed from the ../jre/lib directory. In other words it compiles correctly in the IDE, but when executed, nothing happens when the code that "talks" to the serial port is run.
    I've tried moving the javax.comm.properties file into the working directory. Also, the CLASSPATH and PATH system variables were modified to include the path to javax.comm.properties.
    If you have anymore ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks.

  • How to use schema files stored in a jar file

    I am in a great trouble in accessing the schema files in the jar file. I have to validate my xml files against those schema files while parsing the xml file. I am unable to get the path of the schema files.
    I am getting the path as
    E:/ConfigUtility/schemas.jar!/Schema.xsd
    which is not a valid path name for windows. Plese help me and send me some code how to access a schema file that is in the jar file.
    thanks and regards,
    Krishna.

    Run the program from command line, this way you will see the errors, if any.
    example.: java -jar theJarfile.jar
    I was successful in creating a comm application. I placed the win32com.dll in the same directory of my application jar file and all worked.
    I also extracted the comm.jar , and jar'd my app with the extracted comm files to make one jar.
    I also had a fileWriter() to get the clients jre path and my app would write the javax.properties file to the correct place.
    It took me severel weeks and late nights to accomplish this, but it was all necessary to be able to install only my app, and not a bunch of api's that were needed.

  • Help with JAR Files

    OK, folks, I need some help here...
    And I have researched on this prior to this post, but I still don't get it.
    I have a simple application in Reminder.java file. When I compile it, I get Reminder.class and Reminder$ReminderThread.class, because I have an inner class.
    I place those files in Reminder directory. I want to make an executable JAR file, so I made a manifest file outside the Reminder directory that contains these lines
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Main-Class: Reminder.Remindersince the Reminder.class is within the Reminder directory, I understood I had to have a prefix "Reminder."
    In the command line, I type
    jar cmf manifest Reminder.jar Reminder/Reminder.class Reminder/Reminder$ReminderThread.classAnd I do get a Reminder.jar file, but when I double-click on it, I get a popup saying "Could not find the main class. Program will exit!"
    So, what am I doing wrong and how can I fix this? As I said, I have researched, but I can't understand what went wrong nor how to fix the problem.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Never mind, I solved it, I was missing a carriage return in my manifest file. I feel so stupid now...

    Hello,

    Hi Adam,
    I have created a New EJB Project for my proxy development. This is the usual way I develop proxies for any given service interface created in ESR. Now i am not sure how to create  a dependency with the BRMS facade. If i find the jars i can add it as an external library when compiling.
    Can you explain a bit more about what you ment by "developing the java proxy in a development component", how did you accomplish this when creating a proxy for a service interface?

    Q1: I am not sure what to put under the CODEBASE tag. I tried "." and I also tried "http://mymachine" but both did not work. I also tried without the CODEBASE tag. No luck. The SERVLET is bound to http://mymachine/servlet.
    Q2: Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? Is there a way to force the browser to upload a certain JAR file?
    Thanks...

    It works!!
    This is what I did:
    The jar file in question was the weblogic.jar. I tried putting it under the lib directory of my war file but I had problems because the weblogic.jar contains other war files inside so when I tried to deploy my war file it also tried to deploy the inner war files which for some reason did not work. So I tried removing the war files from the weblogic.jar and this time I had no problems deploying my war file but I still could not find the classes I needed. So I tried moving the weblogic.jar to the root dir of my war file and it worked!! Now the trick here was: I did not set the CODEBASE AND I had the ARCHIVE paramenter set in TWO places like below:
    <APPLET CODE = "marketmap.client.MarketMapApplet"
    ARCHIVE = "weblogic.jar"
    WIDTH = "657"
    HEIGHT = "382"
    ALIGN = "BOTTOM"
    ALT = "APPLET tag not recognized">
    </XMP>
    <PARAM NAME = CODE VALUE = "MyApplet" >
    <PARAM NAME = "type" VALUE="application/x-java-applet;version=1.2.2">
    <PARAM NAME = "scriptable" VALUE="false">
    <PARAM NAME = ARCHIVE VALUE="weblogic.jar">
    </APPLET>
    Actually if you do not place a parameter named ARCHIVE (at the end) it wil NOT work. I tried with multiple jar files listed and it works great too.
    Anyway I figure I'd share. Thanks for the help too.
    Lastly for people who choose not to upload the jar files to clients, you should look at the bea documentation on applets. It lists a classpath servlet that allows you to provide classes to the clients without having to force them to download the jar file.

  • Loading jar files and calling java stored procedure

    I am trying to load jai_core.jar, jai_codec.jar, mlibwrapper.jar and another class I created into my project schema. I am having problems with resolving all of the class using the "loadjava -resolve" command as well as using the "alter java class" command. The single class I authored is not in a valid state as well as the PL/SQL wrapper for the function I am calling.
    My questions are:
    1) Does the single class need to be in a valid state before the PL/SQL wrapper will compile and be in a valid state itself?
    2) Are there any special tricks to this becuase the code I am using below doesn't seem to be working correctly?
    3. Should I worry about "resolving/validating" all of the class from the jar file? I have read conflicting views on this topic.

    We are using Oracle 9.2.0.8 and I have written the single class in 1.3.1.
    The first loadjava commands I tried were:
    loadjava -user username/password -resolve -resolver '((* RTRPROD)(* PUBLIC))' jai_core.jar jai_codec.jar mlibwrapper_jai.jar
    loadjava loadjava -user username/password -resolve -resolver '((* RTRPROD)(* PUBLIC) (* -))' ImageUtility.class
    Then I tried:
    loadjava -user username/password -resolve -resolver '((* RTRPROD)(* PUBLIC) (* -))' jai_core.jar jai_codec.jar mlibwrapper_jai.jar

    I have found out that JAI is part of the Oracle 9 Release 2 but is part of the InterMedia package that is not installed. I would imagine that the JAI libraries mentioned above would be included in InterMedai. However, there are several dependencies on packages distributed in the Sun JDK but not the Oracle Runtime.

  • How to include grouplayout in my .jar file.

    Hello,
    I have a program that works great on my comptuer and the one in my lab. I would like to deploy this .jar file to other systems, but these other systems are only running JRE 1.5.0_10-b03. The problem, as I understand it, is that swing.grouplayout first appeared in JRE1.6.XX so these older versions don't have the proper librairies to run this.
    How do I include the grouplayout class with my .jar file. I have searched all over my HDD and cannot find the grouplayout class file to include. Am I on the right track?
    Thanks!
