Java 5 on OSX

Whats the story with Java 5 on OSX, can i get a beta?

To my knowledge, the most current JDK available for OSX is 1.4.2
Java is available on each OSX system. Most OSX ships with either 1.3.1 or 1.4.1 depending upon the OS. Java JDK version 1.4.2 is available as an update via software updates, but it does require Panther v3 or later. Here is a link with more information.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/java/
As for 1.5, I don't believe that is available yet. I could be wrong, but I believe when some sort of beta is available you may find out about it here...

  • Software Update Java for OSX 2012-2

Just got this tonight when Apple offered it in a Software Update check.  I got the Java for OSX 2012-1 a couple of days ago.  I can't find any info on what changed.  Anyone else get an explanation?

If you have Java installed on your system then I would highly recommend you keep it well up-to-date, and apply all the latest updates that are available for it. The latest Flashback malware threats have been using Java vulnerabilities to infect Mac systems with unpatched versions of Java.
Do keep in mind that it is not very likely you will run across the malware, but there is a chance out there. It has been speculated to have infected ~600,000 systems, and at an estimate of ~150 million Mac systems worldwide that's about 0.004%, or 1 in every 250 systems. This total is just a guestimate on my part.

  • Installing older version of Java on OSX Lion

I am trying to install an older version of Java on OSX lion 10.7.3. The latest update conflicts with matlab, I want to revert to java version 1.6.0_37. I have downloaded the version I want but when I try to install it ( click on the *.pkg file) I get the message : A newer version of this package has already been installed
    Any work arounds?

Give Shane Ross' blog entry a read:
    http://lfhd.blogspot.com/2006/10/versions.html
It is on a different topic but see how he tricks the software into installing without removing an old version. You might could do the same if you follow those steps.

  • How do I reference a file using java on OSX?

I'm new to both Java and development on OSX. I'm trying to run a console app that opens a file and copies it somewhere else. Yet my code errors out saying the file is not found. This is a sample of how I'm trying to reference the source file. What am I doing wrong?
    String wholeFilePath = "file:/users/user_name/srcfile.txt";

You're welcome. Thanks for the dukes.
Note also the convenience of the System property "user.home"
String homeDir = System.getProperty("user.home"); This should be "/Users/user_name" on Mac OS X. But it will be different on Linux and Windows. I always like to avoid hard coding when I can.

  • Latest Java for OSX -- Up-To-Date? Where's new?

I sure could use answers from you Gurus out there, or pointers to where I can get the straight poop. TIA.
I use a non-Apple produced Chat application (gabbly) that I believe is written in Java. One day last month, this app suddenly lost its graphics. Some buttons became invisible, though their mouseovers were still visible, and if I wait till the mouseover shows up to show me I'm still on the invisible button, "it" will work. Other graphics work wrong, also.
I use adblock in FF, but no joy if I turn it off.
I cleared all FF cookies with "gabbly" in their names; no joy.
In Safari, the app kinda works better -- graphics are there, but some buttons work wrong.
Curiously, another Mac on the same LAN shows the app working fine under FireFox 1. (that rev UTD, OSX UTD) So it's probably some machine-dependent thingie...
    I'm not a developer, just a random end-user...
    MacOS 10.4.9 (Up-To-Date)
    FireFox 2.0.0.4 (UTD)
Safari 2.0.4 (419.3) I believe this is UTD, I install all Apple updates to OSX...
    QuickTime Version 7.1.6
Repair Disk Permissions on my startup disk (where all these apps live -- not done yet, necessitates starting from another disk, which I could do...
The Java test at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml says that I'm "using an older version of Java technology" and that a new one, 1.5.0_07 from Apple, is available.
HOWEVER! Under the Apple Operating System of that same display, is gives my current JRE version is 1.3.1 for OSX 10.2.7.
So, how can it be possible that my 1.5.0_07 is an "older version" of Java, when the lower segment of the same URL's display offers me 1.3.1 ?
And should I downgrade from 1.5.0_07 to 1.3.1 ? To me, it looks like Apple's version of Java is more advanced than the version now on offer from java.com...
Or should I re-install the latest Java from Apple, which another string has pointed at, at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/java2se50release1.html ? This is all so confusing...

I agree, the Java version numbering could have been better implemented. Supposedly there is something called Java 2, which has been out for awhile that's included in it. Some people here might have a better answer for that:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=727
I don't understand why the numbering system isn't clearer.
Apple does have this page on Java which may be of some help:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/java/
    And Wikipedia has this page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java%28programminglanguage%29
As you can see J2SE is actually numbered 1.1.4 through 1.6.

  • Developing Java on OSX 10.9.4

I would like to teach myself Java on my Mac running OSX 10.9.4. Other than entering the program into Text Wrangler and executing it through Terminal, I don't know how to go about this. Everything I find is old. They reference JDK or the like. Can someone point me to the right set of documents or a site or something so I can install a suite that will let me write java programs that do something besides "Hello World"?

    Hmmm... Sounds familiar.
However, I don't know how much practical value using Java, Python, and Ruby on your Mac will have in a job search. There is a whole suite of tools - Ant, Maven, Jenkins, Tomcat, vagrant, and many, many more that would be expected. Plus they will want to know what major web sites you have developed. I would recommend learning Swift and writing some free iOS programs. That is all pure Mac development and would be easier to have a demonstrable evidence of your talents.

  • Java and osX

in osX (or any os maybe), why do i run out of memory when it hits 15%? it goes up to about 76M of memory and then "outofmemory" error. is there a way in osX to up the allocated memory? so i can have gigs and gigs of memory? in os9 we coul say "take up a gig of memory" but not now.
also, is there a memory limit for osx's java? like it can only handle 100M in memory or so?

I believe that 1.5 is current. If you don't write os-specific code then you shouldn't have any problems.

  • Install JAVA from OSX-install discs...

    Hi.
I've lost my JAVA (long story :-(), and I was told to try and use Pacifist to install Java from my OSX-discs without having to do a complete OSX-install...
The problem is that I don't know what to install from the discs - when I open them i pacifist, and search for JAVA, there are alot of hits in very different sections of the disc... Does anyone know which "parts" to install to re-create JAVA?
    Brgds, Lars

Thanks Simon, but this is what I'm trying - hence my post above where I ask if anyone knows exactly what to reinstall from the installation-disc (with the recommended program, Pacifist)...
As I write, I've tried to reinstall the java.pkg, but this doesn't seem to be enough, so I asked if anyone knew exactly what I needed to reinstall to recreate java fom scratch?

  • Problems with JAVA in OSX Yosemite 10.10!!

Even after installing JAVA 8 update 25 I keep getting a popup telling me I need to install JRE and when I search JAVA support I am referred to 'support.apple.com/kb/DL1572' but this does not open in apple. Any advice??

There are two "things" that are Java.  One is the Java Development Kit (jdk), which is required if you want to write Java programs.  The other is the Java Runtime Environment (jre), which is required if you only want to be able to run Java programs written by someone else.  On the Oracle Java website (java.com), you choose which one you want/need to install.  I *think*, but am not 100% sure, that installing the jdk includes the jre.

  • Java Issue (Java for OSX 2012-004)

Getting the following issue with java, only gives me the option to Deny, not Allow. Have tried going into Java Prefrences and have the following Settings in the attached screenshots.

The correct version for the OS X and computer hardware
should appear in the Software Update utility when run.
Though it may not appear to make much difference,
to run Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' before
and after updates to software and security updates
is still a well advised precaution. Doesn't hurt to boot
the computer into SafeBoot mode on occasion, & run
the D.U.'s repair disk permissions, that way; & restart.
Not sure why a non-correct java version would be
requested by an application; the Leopard version
of java won't work in Tiger, when one is specified.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Running another program from Java on OSX

  • Java 7 not working on OSX 10.8.3

I need some help with Java 7.
I am trying to open my photo lab software, however, it keeps giving me a message saying I need to download the Java Runtime Environment. I clicked on the link and it brought me to the Java site. I sucessfully download the software but it still doesn't work even though Java test show's it's working.
    I'm running OS X 10.8.3.
I downloaded the softwared using Firfox don't know if that makes a difference.
I've checked my Java setting and they all seem to be enabled. At this point I have not idea whats going on. I didn't have this problem before and can't figure out what to do.

I had a similar problem running Java with OSX 10.8.3.  Even after performing the latest software update (including Safari 6.0.4) in addition to download and installation of the latest version of Java (version 7 update 21), Java did not work. And the “Java icon” was absent from the “system preferences” menu (should be at the bottom under the tab “other”). Very strange! But I found a solution: 1.) Go to “Library > Internet Plug-Ins”; 2.) Move all JavaAppletPlugins to trash (I moved “JavaAppletPlugin (1.7.10.18).plugin” and “JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”); 3.) Download and run the latest Java update; 4.) re-launch Safari.
That solved my problem and I can run Java applications in Safari. Again......

  • OSX Yosemite and Java Runtime

I use a program called Tuxguitar to write and learn songs. After I updated my OS to Yosemite, it will no longer let me use the application. When I try to open it, a message appears that tells me to download Java Runtime Environment. I have done so and search the settings to see if maybe there's a setting that I have to disable. So far, I have not found anything. Whenever I try to open Tuxguitar, the same message pops up even though I have Java Runtime installed.

Try looking for the Java for OSX 2014-001 on the Apple website. Download and install it.
