JAVA 6.17 - 6.18 Breaking MANY programs

I'm not new to JAVA or the computer world. But...we have found that JAVA 6.17 - 6.18 disable or break more programs than we are even able to count. When a program or Web Site doesn't work, we simply back-rev to any previous version, 6.14 being our particular favorite, and everything is good in the computer world. We have no less than 15 programs that quit working after upgrading. Is anyone else experiencing this? We have reached our limit of frustration and back-reving to keep things functioning.

I usually hack the registry to disable the JRE updates. Set the value for each of the following keys to zero to disable automatic updates:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy\EnableJavaUpdate
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy\NotifyDownload
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy\NotifyInstall
There's a also a "jusched.exe" process that runs during login that can also be deleted:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Delete "SunJavaUpdateSched" to stop this process from running at login.
I've noticed the new JRE 6 Update 20 bundles the automatic updates feature as separate MSI installer. Get the EXE dowloaded from Sun, extract the MSI installer and use that for your deployments without the automatic update MSI package.

I can't see anything bidirectional about these relationships. What I can see is a couple of BasketN classes that look identical so I don't know why they both exist, and they both contain lists of themselves as members, which suggests some kind of tree structure. Nothing bidirectional there. I can see tat these things can form circular object graphs but I don't see why you would want to do that.

Is the Adobe CD a MAC app ?
If it is a program for Windows you will not be able to install it.
If you nedd that program you can either buy the equivalent for Mac or install a way to run Windows under Mac (may be a cheaper solution)

Many programs I used to use in Tiger doesn't work in Leopard

Here are the ones I've noticed have not been working or have errors:

Adium
VisualHub
There are probably like 10 more but I haven't seen it yet. Why are so many programs are acting like this. I was thinking it was becasuse it wasn't ugpraded enough but I did install the newer version and it doesn't work.

Well, haven't we had to deal with a slew of updates every two years?
And at least Vista x64 is probably more secure, supports EFI (UEFI 2.).
The same people that would need a Mac Pro (dual cpu, 8GB RAM, etc) would be looking at 64-bit.
Did not Apple tout the G5 from IBM as finally being a 64-bit system? But yes, even Adobe CS3 is still 32-bit and limited to 3.5GB of user space, which there are work arounds for.
One person I tried to help was using Maya but his version doesn't work with Leopard, and blames Apple and 10.5 it seems, rather than realize he needs to consider an 8-core system rather than 4-core, more memory, make better use of disk and RAID, and of course... upgrade software or... WAIT FOR MAYA AND 10.5.x to catch up to each other!
People assume you have to wait for SP1 for Windows, but think they should jump rigtht in, when we all have seen that X.3 is usually the first "sweet spot" in any release.

Spell check feature in many programs

Hey-
In many programs, pidgin, tomboy, etc, I have the squiggly lines under my words as if they're misspelled. Is there one place where I set a dictionary, or can I set these program up to use openoffice's dictionary, gnome's dictionary, or firefox's dictionaries?
Really, i dont have a clue about this, all I know is that in other distros that's been done automatically so i dont know how to do it manually now.

I am pretty sure pidgin uses Aspell, possibly through GtkSpell. I know for certain that Tomboy uses GtkSpell. So you're going to need the Aspell dictionaries for the languages you want installed. Then it is dependent on locale which language it uses with English as default if the correct dictionaries aren't installed.
However, I know that for example for pidgin there is a plugin: http://plugins.guifications.org/trac/wiki/switchspell to set spell check languages... even different for each contact. I think there may be some system-wide way to do it but I haven't seen any.

I have removed the old Java Updates (17/19/21) from my Program and Features list(Win7). They still appear in the Tools Add-ons Extensions list. How do I remove them?

In both SAFE and Regular browser windows, the UNINSTALL button is grayed out.
I have tried in SAFE MODE, as well as the Help>troubleshooting Information>Application Basics>Profile Directory>Open Containing Folder,,,(looked, nothing there),,,,in both SAFE and Regular browser windows.

You can uninstall (remove) the Java Console extensions, you do not need them to run Java applets.

On start up many programs open which is irritating

I use Macbook pro 13" year of 2011, many programs open on start up irritating me since i have to close all of them before I can work comfortably. Any help?

Are these programs that are set to run on startup? You can alter your startup programs so that none open up automatically.

Can i uninstall all the non 2014 versions of the software (Ex. Photoshop, Premiere ect.)? Wondering since i don't want to break any programs.

Id like to know if i can uninstall all the non 2014 versions of adobe products. Id rather know before i try as i don't want to break some programs but i need to free up some pc space.

Java 5 update breaks Lightzone program

I have just installed the new Java Update 5 for 10.6 and found that it stops Lightcrafts Lightzone 3.9 program from starting. This program is a great photo editor which depends on Java and I have had to restore OS X back to what it was before this Java update.
It is reported that Apple will no longer provide support for Java in OS X. Where does that leave users of such a program as Lightzone?

Had way too much work but I have this working.
Avocent says to delete Firefox 3 and install Firefox 2. This is supposed to force the applet to download again, but it didn't. Making the changes in the Java Preferences mentioned above didn't help. Here's what I had to do - it is now working:
1) Apple Support says the only way to downgrade Java is to do an Archive and Install the OS, then install all updates EXCEPT the Java update - done.
2) Go into Java Preferences and Java Web Start - delete the Avocent Applet from Java Web Start. I did that before the Archive and Install but it didn't help until I changed Java Preferences back to using J2SE 5.0 as the preferred version this afternoon.
3) I don't know if you have to take Firefox out and install it again or not. Since I was using Firefox 3 they seemed to think deleting it and replacing it with Firefox 2 would force the download of the Applet but I did that several times in combination with the Java Web Start. It didn't matter until I flipped the Java Preferences to the J2SE 5.0. It's working again with Firefox 3.

Because of the news that the Java enterprise will be opened up I decided to replace the version I got on my 03/05 media kit with the one being made available right now. Nothing wrong there but the upgrade can be a little tricky since you're adviced to do this manually. Nothing wrong there but I decided to uninstall the current version (Q1) and then re-install the current one (Q4). Only problem; only after I tried installing the Directory server from the current release and uninstalled it.
This resulted in a little chaos, which was entirely my fault. After entirely uninstalling the Q4 release I tried to remove the Q1 parts. But because the uninstall program (/var/sadm/prod/SUNWentsys4) was already removed I didn't have much alternatives (or so I thought).
So last night I drank a little too much beer and then went on the "cleaning up" rampage. In my drunken mind I figured "remove all Java enterprise components = uninstalling the whole product". While this idea might make sense, it starts to become an horror story when you realize, like I now do, that the Java enterprise system replaces certain packages on your Solaris 10 system. Packages like, for example, SUNWtls, SUNWjss and (don't laugh) SUNWcsl. So what happens if you simply manually pkgrm the lot ? Well, you'll do the math but I'll give you a little hint by saying that SUNWcsl has something to do with PAM :-)
So here I was; behind my nice Blade 100 with CDRom & 512Mb memory (soon to be doubled) but with a PC USB keyboard and optical mouse. Its a little hard to press stop-a using a PC keyboard and I got stuck since I removed some very important packages. Reinstall? I don't think so, we're using Unix here and there is always a way around your misery.
In my case I merely attached a nullmodem cable to the Blade, hooked it onto my Linux workstation, removed keyboard & mouse and started minicom (9600N81). After putting the first install CD (thanks Sun :)) in the drive I booted the system, send a break, booted the CD and exited the installer. Now I was basicly home free since I could mount my system's slices in /tmp/rescue, access the LAN and use pkgadd (pkgadd -d ./ -R /tmp/rescue) to manually re-install the missing packages which disallowed me from logging in. (tip: if you just need a rescue environment quickly just "boot cdrom -s" for single user mode).
And here I am again, back from the wrecked, typing and studying (Java) on my trusted Blade box again. The moral of this story: Don't drink & "quickly" admin a Sun server, its not worth the risk.
I've picked up these hints from several websites but didn't encounter anything like this in these forums. I have to admit not having searched very hard (I only googled and used SunSolve) but I figured that this isn't highly classified info so decided to dump it here too for everyone to see. Just remember that doing something horribly stupid like I did doesn't always mean you have to re-install. You'll learn and gain much more experience by fixing things.

You don't have a problem.
The MS jvm is not present in the computer. If it was, it would show in IE Tools...Advanced list along with the Sun jvm (There would also be an entry for the MS console in the IE View menu - as opposed to the entry that the Sun console places in the IE Tools menu.)
The Sun Control Panel is ignorant of the MS jvm (if it's installed).
I don't use Firefox, but understand that the Control Panel is also ignorant of it; its install/activation is currently done outside of the Control Panel. You can probably find more info at the Firefox site.
The vulnerability existed in both the MS and Sun (and other) jvm's but you are using a fixed version, as this reference lists:
