Java and OpenType fonts

Does anyone have any info on loading OpenType fonts and using them in Swing?
I'm currently using the Font.createFont(inputstream) method to load TrueType fonts directly from a server and use them in my application. However, createFont() does not support OpenType.
I've heard something about java beeing able to load OpenType tables - does anyone know more about this?
Is it possible to load an OpenType font from a server and instantly use it without installing it in the users OS?

I've found a package that might be able to help me out, gnu.java.awt.font
... but the site is down:

though luck.

  • Support for OpenType Font with .otf Extention

    Does anyone know how to list a OpenType fone with extention of .otf in Java runing on Windows XP?
    When I use GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getAvailableFontFamilyNames(), it doesn't list any font names with .otf extention.

    Not every device has every type of font. When you ask for a specific font, and the font doesn't exist then the system will find the best match for it.
    The only way to be sure you have a monospace font on every device is that you include that font yourself, and draw your own characters using drawImage() with that font.

  • OpenType Font

    Hi
    I want to use an OpenType Font (*.otf) in Swing.
    Can Anyone tell me how to load OTF fonts??
    If possible provide a small example on how to use OpenType font in java.?
    Regards!
    Amit

    Opentype fonts can be either extended Truetype fonts or have Truetype-like structure but embed CFF (Compact Form Font) to define actual glyph shapes.
    Java does not support CFF format yet and therefore there is no way to handle Opentype/CFF fonts. Unfortunately such fonts are not rare - e.g. some fonts shipped with Acrobat Reader are of this kind.
    At the moment Java has no oficial support for Opentype fonts but because they are similar to Truetype you can just open them as Truetype fonts from input stream. Note that some Opentype extensions will not be used and this approach will not help with Opentype/CFF fonts (you will not see any text drawn).

  • How to embed an OpenType font in Beta 2?

    Hi Folks
    I'm trying to embed an OpenType font into a Flash Builder Beta 2 project and haven't been successful yet.
    What I've tried so far:
    1. changing the order of the font managers in the flex-config.xml file, to put the one that handles OpenType first:
    <manager-class>flash.fonts.AFEFontManager</manager-class>
    2. in the .css file for the main mxml file, changing   embedAsCFF: true;  to embedAsCFF: false;
    3. embedding the font using a .swf file containing the font made in Flash CS3, and referencing that in the .css file
    4. embedding the font in <fx:Script/> using [embed]. Got an error message on the src line (Embed is only supported on classes and member variables.)
    [Embed(source="/Library/Fonts/CalliopeMVBStdRg.otf",
             fontStyle = 'normal',
             fontName='Calliope MVB Std Regular',
             mimeType='application/x-font',
             embedAsCFF="true")]
    Any ideas on what my mistake is?
    Thanks for your attention
    Kearney Buskirk

    It should just work in CSS with @font-face.  What error did you get?
            @font-face
    When you tried #4 did you add the in front of a member variable?

  • OpenType font won't work in PDF created from PM 7.0.1a file

    Per my client's request, I had to purchase a lovely new OpenType font, AJenson Pro, for a book project I'm paging using PageMaker 7.0.1a in Windows XP. First it wouldn't print on my postscript HP laser printer, but downloading an updated printer driver from the HP web site easily fixed that problem. But I have done everything I can think of and I can't get the new font to appear in a .pdf created using Acrobat Distiller 5.0.5, which came bundled with PageMaker.
    The font shows up in the finished .pdf as boxes with X marks in them instead of letters! I'm not trying to use anything but standard characters (no glyphs, etc.) in the font. I've been using PageMaker and creating .pdf files in Acrobat Distiller 5.0 for years and have had no problems until I got this new font. Adobe Type Manager shows that it is installed and it looks great on the screen.
    I purchased the entire AJenson Pro font family from MyFonts.com, so I have bold, bold ital, etc. Their technical support couldn't suggest anything I hadn't already tried.
    I'm planning on upgrading my PageMaker to InDesign soon, but I'll need a new computer to meet the minimum system requirements so I've been putting it off. I'm afraid to even download the free 30-day trial on my older computer. Any suggestions on how to get this OpenType font to work in a .pdf created using PM 7.0.1a and Acrobat Distiller 5.0, or do I have to upgrade to InDesign right away? I need to be able to create a .pdf so I can e-mail proofs to my client and eventually to send the finished book to a commercial printer. Thanks!

    I have had this same problem myself with most Open Type fonts. It's very irritating, because it seems like most of the new fonts are being issued exclusively in Open Type.
    I have developed a work-around, which you can attempt at your own risk.
    Purchase the software FontCreator (I use FontCreator 5.6 Home Edition). It's not very expensive.
    Open the problem font in FontCreator, and save it with a different name. In the process of saving it, the font will be converted to a TrueType font. Install the new version of the font. In my experience, you can then successfully use the font in Pagemaker, and convert it to a pdf.
    This is not a perfect solution because there will be a *very* slight diminishment in the crispness of the lines of the font -- but this is only visible when the font is magnified to something like 6400% in Acrobat. It is not visible to the naked eye, or at least not to my naked eye.

  • Adobe Type Manager problem with Windows 7 and DIN font file extension not showing

    I have Windows 7 and for some reason I cannot install Adobe Type Manager onto my Computer.
    I need ATM to install the DIN font but am having no luck what so ever.
    I can see the DIN font in my Dropbox but it is showing up like this:-  ._DIN-bold, no file file extension. what am I doing wrong? is it Mac?

    Adobe Type Manager absolutely cannot be installed on Windows 7. In fact, even attempting to install it may corrupt your operating system installation and its ability to properly render Type 1 and OpenType CFF fonts. The last version of Windows for which ATM was at all compatible was Windows XP, 32-bit only!
    Adobe Type Manager is not at all necessary to install fonts, even Type 1 fonts, on Windows 7 systems. Right click on the font file for TrueType of OpenType CFF fonts or the .PFM file for Type 1 fonts and select the Install option.
    The font file you are trying to install is for MacOS. It cannot be installed on Windows.

  • How do I change caps of an OpenType font to small caps in my InDesign cc document?

    Greetings, Community. It would be great if I could discover how to change caps of an OpenType font to small caps in my InDesign cc document. That's the simple question.
    To be more exact, I have an 18-page play that contains stage directions in caps in parentheses, which I would like to change to small caps. The font I'm using is an OpenType, Minion Pro, with small caps.
    Another thing is, I'd ideally like to be able to do that without changing all caps in the document, and also, to not have to convert the caps to lower case in order to do it.
    My source document (which I Placed in my InDesign document) is Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac.
    I did go to Microsoft to find out how to do it in Word, but could only find a solution for Word for Windows.
    I did try their solution anyhow (a macro) but it didn't work.
         Thanks a lot. It's great being in InDesign even though I had my good years with QuarkXpress, which eventually became impossible for me.

  • Can I embed OpenType fonts in Flash CS 5.5?

    I just reopened an old-ish Flash project and the fonts aren't working. The project was worked on previously in CS 3 or 4 - don't recall - on a Mac running some earlier version of OS X. I'm currently running Lion and Flash CS 5.5, and some of the fonts aren't embedding or rendering. The project is using Postscript fonts.
    I thought I read that TrueType fonts are more reliable, but the font I need (Akzidenz Grotesk) is not available in TrueType, only OpenType.
    Am I safe to buy and use this in OpenType format? It's several hundred dollars so want to be sure before blowing the money. I think I'm looking at this version, which seems to be the smallest/cheapest I can get away with: http://www.linotype.com/265010/AkzidenzGroteskStdValuePack-product.html
    Thanks!

    Thanks. I'm actually using the Font Embedding panel in Flash. Seems to be working though I can't get any of the variations to work.
    I create a new font in the Font Embedding panel, choose my font and weight (trying Myriad Pro and Myriad Pro Italic), export for actionscript (AS classes fontNormal1 and fontItalic1).
    Then in the class where I do my formatting, up top I have:
    private var fontNormalFont1:String = 'Myriad Pro';
    private var fontItalicFont1:String = 'Myriad Pro Italic';
    In my constructor I have:
    Font.registerFont(fontNormal1);
    Font.registerFont(fontItalic1);
    Then I create my text format:
    fmtMainTitle:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    fmtMainTitle.color = 0xffffff;
    fmtMainTitle.font = fontNormalFont1;
    fmtMainTitle.size = 18;
    Which I subsequently apply to text fields (including an embed font directive). It works great if my font is fontNormalFont1, but if I try fontItalicFont1 it comes up blank - no text appears.
    I tried creating an instance of the AS class for the italic font, and getting the font name:
    fontItalicInst:Font = new fontItalic1();
    trace(fontItalicInst.fontName);
    And I get back "Myriad Pro" - in other words it's only returning the base font name, not the full name.
    I'm pretty rusty at AS/Flash, and fonts were never my strong suit, so I could be doing all the the wrong way. I do need to have fonts available in CSS, which could be why I'm registering the fonts (it's been a few years since I built this app).
    Would appreciate any advice

  • PLZ HELP. Mac and windows font problems in images desciptions

    Hello everyone,
    macintosh, windows, Bridge CS3, Greek language
    My husband went away for a month and showed me and asked me to put descriptions in Bridge for about 600 photographs in his office macintosh. But I did not do this in the office. I took the paper with the descriptions and the photographs home, and did that in Windows.
    But today in the office it is all wrong.
    I must tell you that everything is writen in Greek language. Is this why evrything looks wrong?
    Is something I can do to fix this?
    Please help me. Thank you
    Artemis

    Ramon,
    Thank you for answering
    OpenType fonts like Arial or Times New Roman or Verdana?
    How do I make both computers use the same character encoding. If I have character utf-8 in windows How do I make the Mac use the same? If I change this will it give problewms with other applications in Mac?
    Also any idea about script that can write the descriptions from my document to the images?
    Thankyou

  • CR XI R2, Crystal Report Viewer Opentype Font not supported

    Hi
    For my reporting I selected an OpenType Font. But with my crystal version it doesnu2019t work. My Crystal version is
    CR XI R2 Servicepack 3.
    In the Crystal Report designer, I can select the OpenType Font but with the viewer it doesn't work. I saw in the release notes (2008 and XI) that only TrueType und Postscript fonts are supported.
    Can you tell me, in wich version that OpenType Font will be supported?
    Thanks a lot.
    Pius

    I find it hard to believe Crystal doesn't support OpenType fonts as I am told by my design group that OpenType fonts are a "superior, widely-supported format".  I am finding this limitation very frustrating as my organization has a specific set of OpenType fonts that we are expected to use for branding purposes, but I can't use them in my reports!  And I can't find TrueType versions of the fonts, so I am forced to use other fonts and end up with a very different end product.
    Please reconsider!
    Thank you.

  • Indian language - Gujarati OpenType font problem

    Hi All,
    I  have designed a Gujarati opentype font using Fontographer 4 on a  macintosh machine, version 10.5.8, generated a TTF file of it and wrote  the tables for that font using VOLT on a Windows machine. When I test  the font in notepad, word on windows or openoffice in Linux, no  positioning or substitution tables appear. But all these rules are  working well when tested in the proofing tool of VOLT.
    Can  anyone please tell why is could be happening? Am I missing some thing in  the process?
    Thanks so much.

    Dear Hunt,
    Am little bit confused after reading your reply.As jui mentioend she have designed the font using fontographer and wrote the tables by using VOLT (in windows)
    So whether rendering engine is necesary for the fonotgrapher, as per my knowledge fontographer lets to design, edit, and manipulate fonts(Pls correct me if am wrong).And all the posiitoning and tabling happens in Windows by using volt, where bydefault uniscribe support is there.
    Pls clarify this.Also If it's the issue is any convertion tool is avialable for converting the font from MAC to Windows.Or wil it possible to do by fontographer or volt.
    And if we ported this font to fontforge, with the Pango or ICU backend support( in Linux), whether this issue will resolve ?
    PS:Am just a beginer in this domain,starts learing with jui.So pls apologise me if am wrong.

  • OpenType fonts in Design View.

    Hi
    just wondering if I should be able to see OpenType font's in
    the text selection dialog box in the CSS design view in Flex
    Builder 3?

    I am having THE SAME PROBLEM.  It's making design nearly impossible.  Has anyone a solution to this?  I want to see Myriad Pro and not Times New Roman or Georgia in my design mode in Flex 3.  After compiling, I can see the embedded font read from my css, but i still only see a default font while in design mode in flex.

  • Terminal.app won't display OpenType fonts (.otf)

    Where the characters should be, blanks are displayed. This is a serious problem for me because, while I use Monaco in my terminal, the fallback font for Japanese characters is Hiragino, which is an OpenType font: as a result, Japanese text is not visible in my terminal.
    Here is a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/wlNPV.png
    Note that, since I set the system's language to Japanese, most of the text in Terminal's preferences is also invisible.
    The problem only seems to occur in Terminal.app, and does not affect other users on the same machine (I tried logging in as guest). It occurs with all OpenType fonts I tried, not just Japanese ones.
    Strangely, if I delete Terminal's preferences, the problem almost disappears (except that it still says ル in the window's title bar instead of ターミナル); however, if I close and relaunch Terminal, the problem immediately reoccurs, even though the preferences file is pristine.
    I tried resetting the ATS cache (atsutil databases -remove) and restarting in safe mode, but the problem still occurs. I've tried googling around, and I found some other people mentioning the same problem, but no solution. Can you help?

    I've got the same problem with my new MBP 2011 with Snow Leopard and it really annoys me as I'm dealing with multilingual texts every day.
    What surprises me is that I had no problems at all since MacOs 10.1 and now it appears in 10.6 !
    Back in the old days I had to put a .inputrc file for displaying Japanese characters but that was not a big deal.
    When I create a new account, it works for a few hours (Japanese characters display well even with menlo or courier fonts set as default). But after a few manipulations here and there (that do not seem related to terminal or fonts like setting my iTunes account) and a couple of reboots, the problem reappears again, ie the Japanese characters do not display again.
    I can temporarily solve the problem by using the Osaka font but 1 it is not nicely displayed with irregular spaces between characters and 2 when I want to display other characters (thai, khmer or whatever), I have to change the default font again. This is a real pain in the neck.
    I read in another thread that there is a solution to convert the OpenType Font you wish to use into a TrueType font but it is not a solution for me neither as there is no existing font that covers all the unicode characters.
    Is Apple aware of this bug? Did they acknowledge that there is a problem?
    If someone finds a solution, I'll be really happy.

    I really need help with my fonts.  Xfontsel and term emulators inc. aterm AND rxvt-unicode cannot find many of my fonts inc TTF and non-TTF and i do not understand why.  All my fonts are visible and useable by gtk apps.  They all appear in gtk2fontsel.
    There may be some error in my xorg.conf but i find it diffcult to understand why fonts appear in some apps.
    I can use some artwiz fonts in aterm but they all have huge space between the characters.  this seems weird and makes me think it must be something in my x config or other settings cos they are AL artwiz package in the usual path - if they work for most people they should work for me right?

    well, I used to have "fc-cache -f" run on startup (rc.local) in order to make sure.... sure it took  a bit, but I only reboot after big X changes (because I can't fully wipe out xdm if it is respawning).
    And yeah lanrat - I forgot about the "man fonts-conf"... my fault there.
    And I thought the font dirs were in local.conf.... but you're most likely right (as those are all basically system default font dirs).
    I'll have to look into xfontsel.... it may show TTF fonts, but it uses old XFDL syntax for fonts.... whereas the syntax speicifed above is modern (as of 2001ish) just not used for some obscure reason.
    I sent Kieth an email regarding fontconfig and freetype and font HOWTOs... we'll see if he responds....
    Until then, this is the best guide I've seen so far:
    http://freedesktop.org/~xorg/X11R6.7.0/PDF/fonts.pdf
    EDIT:
    The only conflicting thing I've seen is the following ->
    From above guide, discussing font type handling:
    The list of font modules distributed with X11R6.7 is as follows:
    * bitmap: bitmap fonts
    * freetype: TrueType fonts, OpenType fonts, Type 1 fonts
    * type1: alternate Type 1 backend and CIDFont backend;
    * xtt: alternate TrueType backend
    * speedo: Bitstream Speedo fonts
    From http://freetype.sourceforge.net/freetype2/
    By default, FreeType 2 supports the following font formats:
    * TrueType fonts (and collections)
    * Type 1 fonts
    * CID-keyed Type 1 fonts
    * CFF fonts
    * OpenType fonts (both TrueType and CFF variants)
    * SFNT-based bitmap fonts
    * X11 PCF fonts
    * Windows FNT fonts
    * BDF fonts (including anti-aliased ones)
    * PFR fonts
    * Type42 fonts (limited support)

    After updating to 10.4.7 on two different G5 PPC machines, we immediately began to experience problems with Quark XPress 6.5 unexpectedly quitting when trying to open existing Quark docs in which OpenType fonts were used. Also, trying to apply an OpenType font to text in a Quark doc would also cause Quark to immediately crash.
    SOLUTION: Clear the font caches.
    After clearing the font caches with FontCacheCleaner and restarting, the problem dissappeared. Hope this is helpful to somebody.

    In Tiger, you'll need to use Font Finagler (or, the Font Cache Cleaner feature of Font Finagler) rather than my original Font Cache Cleaner utility. Man, it's been so long... I'm trying to remember what versions of OS X my original freeware Font Cache Cleaner app supported. I think it was only 10.2.x and 10.3.x. There were fairly significant changes in the font caching architecture from OS X 10.3 to OS X 10.4. Unfortunately, that earlier version of Font Cache Cleaner wasn't very sophisticated and while it may have acted like it had cleaned the font cache files and then restarted, very few, if any of the (OS X 10.4) font cache files would have been removed. (That's one of the reasons I decided to switch to an interface where I show you the files that will be deleted -- otherwise, how do you really know that this utility is doing what it claims it's doing?)
    Anyhow, I'm in the process of creating a Universal Binary of Font Finagler and adding support for AdobeFnt.lst files, Quark jaws font cache files, and Microsoft font cache files. (Unfortunately, I've had to put the font suitcase-editing thing on hold).
    Anyway, glad this could help.
