JAva car game in 3D to test and note

I just made a trial version of a car game in java3D.
To see it in your browser you have to download the JAVA3d extension (the URL is given on the main page of my site)
Then you have 3 keys

  • Y in java objects are created on heap only and not on stack ??

    Hi ,
    I need a answer to the question " why all the objects are created on heap only in java and not on stack " ?
    In java a object is created when we specify new i.e. for example,
    consider the following cases.
    1.
    Vector v = new Vector();
    here object is created and the reference to this object is assigned to variable v. okie.
    2.
    when i write something like
    Vector vec ;
    Here i am creating reference variable for Vector. No object is created and no seperate memory is allocated for it. Reference variablesa are stored along with other primitive variables on the java stack.
    My question is, in C++ by writing case 2 i can create an object and it is creating this object on stack. So why in java object is not created on stack while i do like this ? Why in java objects are created on heap only ?
    If my question is out of interest of this forum i apologize for it. But if somebody can throw some light on it, it would be of great help.
    Cheers !!
    Dipesh

    Hi
    I asked this question just to understand how compiler and jvm cud have been designed......i.e. to know the philosophy behind designing language.......
    now what i cud surmise is that if objects were to be stored in stack then on calling garbage colllector , it may delete some unused obj and unreferenced object(unreachable object) and this in turn may give rise to non-contagious areas in stack, thus nullifying the garbage collector's objective of freeing the the memory. Again deallocating that intersperse spaces into one free block of space will be bit troublesome task.....
    So considering above factor the designer of jvm and java compiler have opted for storing objects on heap rather than stack.....
    If u have something to say bout this.......pls go ahead.......
    Cheers !!

  • Running a Java App like a service in linux and not closing with window

    I know its not really a question i should ask you but thought you might have a quick answer for me, I have trying to running a small java application on one of the servers. I want it to run almost like a service, what i mean is i dont want the application to end when the terminal session is ended. So i thought i should put an entry into the /etc/rc.local file as follows (Final Line):
    cd /home/bluepoint/Teamselect_ServerApp_v1.0/bin/
    java Server
    #!/bin/sh
    # This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.
    # You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't
    # want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.
    touch /var/lock/subsys/local
    /home/bluepoint/kmyfirewall.sh
    su - bluepoint "/usr/local/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28/bin/startup.sh"
    cd /home/bluepoint/startme.sh
    As you will see it call a shell script which contains only the following lines (or see attached):cd /home/bluepoint/Teamselect_ServerApp_v1.0/bin/
    java Server
    but nothing happens when i restart the server. The DB, sendmail, tomcat etc start fine but not my app.
    The application works fine if i start it in a terminal window so i know it can run.
    Any ideas what im doing wrong??
    Kind Regards

    It's probably not happening because you missed the -c from the su command. However this isn't the correct approach to daemon processes on linux (which is what you're after).
    What you need to do is to place a script in the /etc/init.d directory. This script should take a single argument and start the daemon if the argument is "start", and stop it if "stop". Check out the scripts already in there to see how it's done.
    Then go to System Settings/Server settings/Services and enable the new service for the normal run level.

  • I understand there may be a new Apple TV coming out in 2014. Hopefully this could be a game changer in our lives and not just a product upgrade. I also understand that Apple does not except unsolicited ideas and suggestions for new products.

    This is totally reasonable. That being said, understanding this is neither a "suggestion" nor an "idea", I was wondering how great it would be if the new Apple TV would have built in Radio Frequency control capability for all HT products. Comcast has RF control with it's new x1 box but it does not work with other components like a DVR, AV Receiver or other HT devices. Logitech offers remotes that one has to program with all the codes per individual manufacturer but this still requires an RF base station and external blasters.
                    If the Apple had a relationship with the different audio/video manufacturers so that one could simply use an Apple TV remote ( or optionally use ipad, iPhone, MAC ) to control everything HT, then this simplicity would capture a huge audience in a big way!! Of course..........this is not a suggestion or an idea :-).
                    Faithful Apple Fan, BPACK

    You can submit feature requests to Apple customer service.
    I was wondering how great it would be if the new Apple TV would have built in Radio Frequency control capability for all HT products.
    No idea what you mean by HT devices, but it is unlikely Apple would release a product to support 3rd party devices.  On top of which changing the ATV remote to be RF instead of IR would break all the existing remotes that are able to work with ATV.  And would be MUCH more expensitve.
    Comcast has RF control with it's new x1
    Only becasue they HAVE to because they only provide one actual cable box, with other dumb box termtinals.   So remotes have to be able to work in other rooms since they all have to connect to the real cable box.
    but it does not work with other components like a DVR, AV Receiver or other HT devices.
    Right, since once you switch to RF you break compatablity with all the other IR devices out there which is pretty much 99% of them.
                    If the Apple had a relationship with the different audio/video manufacturers so
    Apples whole business model is locking out other manufatures.

  • I have just downloaded a new game from the apps store and not i am getting very large icons and have to use 3 finger to navigate the screens.  Please help asap

    As above. can any one give me any idea what to do?

    Double-tap with three fingers, then go to Settings/General/Accessibility and turn of the Zoom feature that you must have turned on. Then go read the manual: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf for the answer to this and many other questions you will likely have.

  • A problem with my Java Scrabble game

    Hello
    I am making a Java Scrabble game for a school assignment and I have a problem with the following:
    The number of players is input by the user (2 to 4) and i need to create a number of arrays based on the number of players. These arrays must have 7 playing pieces at all times until the "bag" of pieces has less pieces than those required to replace the ones a certain player just used (in wich case the bag would give that player all of it's remaining pieces and, from this point on, the player arrays would not necessarily need to have 7 pieces).
    this is my procedure to take a piece from the bag:
         public Piece takePiece()
              if (this.pieceCounter > 0) {
                   Arrays.sort(this.pieces, 0, this.pieceCounter);
                   int i = this.generator.nextInt(this.pieceCounter);
                   Piece p = this.pieces;
                   this.pieceCounter--;
                   this.pieces[i] = this.pieces[this.pieceCounter];
                   return p;
              else
                   return null;
    this is my Piece class:
    public class Piece implements Comparable {
         private int scorePiece;
         private char letterPiece;
         public Piece(char letterPiece, int scorePiece)
              this.scorePiece = scorePiece;
              this.letterPiece = letterPiece;
         public int scorePiece()
              return scorePiece;
         public String letterPiece()
              return letterPiece();
         public String toString()
              return letterPiece+ " " + scorePiece;
         public int compareTo(Object a)
              Piece piece= (Piece) a;
              return (int) letterPiece - (int) piece.letterPiece;
    }Thanks in advance for your help

    Ok, if i create a Players class and do this in Main class:
         if(nPlayers >= 2 && nPlayers <= 4)
              Players arrayPlayers[];
              arrayPlayers= new Players [nPlayers ];
              for(int i=0 ; i < nPlayers ; i++)
                       arrayPlayers[i] = new Players ();
              }My Players Class should contain something like this:
             // Array of 7 that contains Pieces...
         Piece[] pieces= new Piece[7];how can i get pieces from takePiece(); (Class Bag) and put them in the pieces arrays until takePiece(); returns null?

    Could you help me with one real world use case where we need to traverse linklist and arraylist in backward direction other than printing the linklist or arraylist in reverse order. One example is that you might want to use it as a stack. For a very large (+very+ large) stack it would out-perform the Vector-based Stack in the API.The first thing that pops into my head is an undo/redo function for a text editor. Each edit action is dumped onto such a stack. Each time you hit CTRL+Z to undo an action you go back in the stack. Each time you hit CTRL+Y to redo the action you go forward again.

  • [Java and all else] Requirements tracking, testing, and versioning

    Hello,
    as a semi-experimental subject, I am considering managing requirements and test documents in the same version control system as the code.
    For some reasons, this versioning policy doesn't seem mainstream, so I'd like to have your opinion on that.
    +N.B.: the prefix "java and all else" refers to the fact that I'm using this area to post a message that is related not only to Java but also to other topics (people, processes, tools,...) that help program in Java - so this post is not really off-topic either. For the record, I filed a suggestion to open a dedicated forums to discuss topics like that, although it hasn't received enthusiastic support so far :o(...+
    Here is how I had imagined to proceed:
    - requirements document gets edited and stored as text in the VCS
    - test plan (basically a matrix of which tests cover which requirements) goes into the VCS as well, text or binary
    - test instructions (detailed steps, actions, expected results) are stored as text in the VCS
    - test results - I do'nt know yet, but I planned to store them as text (lists of testId=result) in the VCS (I'm not sure indeed, that those would go into the VCS)
    The advantage of versioning those as text is that all VCS clients support easy-as-a-click history browsing and diff capabilities.
    Diffs and logs are useful to trace when and why a requirement has appeared, evolved, obsolated,... Especially in long-lived systems whose maintenance crew rarely embeds "historical" pioneers who developed the original systems.
    My questions:
    1) Is it good practice to version such docs in the same repository as the code?
    I've never seen this done.
    - In half of the shops I've been these docs are not really versioned (the PM considered it enough that the latest applicable version of the docs was available)
    - The other half has used versioning systems ranging from ad-hoc (shared folder acting as repository of all versions) to "document management systems". I found such tools to be developer-unfriendly (poor diff capability, poor text searching), and developers to be office-document-reluctant (mostly because of the shortcomings of the doc format and doc management systems).
    - The third half <wink to aficionados of French cinema> used dedicated softwares (Test Director, RQM,...) to manage requiremetns, test plans, test cases, test results,... The drawback is that the developers were hardly involved in using such tools, and even when they were, were not trained to use the administrative and metadata capabilities (who modified the test steps, when and why?).
    On the contrary, developers would easily and gladly browse histiry, check diffs, etc... on text documents versioned using their daily-used source control system.
    2) Are there "standard", preferrably text-based, formats, for the documents listed above?
    Each and every organization I've seen had its own format, but most items have equivalents in all organizations, even if disguised under different terminologies. I have no formal education or training in quality assurance, but I guess some ISO or CMM norms define those recurring items, and I expect some abstract XML format might exist
    3) Are there tools already that cover edition and exploitation of such formats, or why not, of the versioning of such formats (naive example, graphing the pass rate of tests over time)?
    A pet project of mine is to develop and open-source some Swing UI to do this, but existing tools would save me the trouble.
    I'm looking forward to reading about your own experience.
    Best regards,
    Jerome.

    Fixed link.

    I don't have data on comparative bug rates because we did not do studies focused on that. This stuff was mostly driven by convenience #) considerations.
    Subjectively, yes it seemed to have lower bug rate compared to maintaining documents in, say, pdf format (like our doc writers did with User/Dev guides). BTW doc writers are another kind of guys who dislike plain text.
    As for using test results history the way you describe - agree, that makes some sense. Now that you mention it I recall using it myself that way, in one of the projects where testers managed to establish really convenient way to assess test execution history. After I figured how easy it was, I began using it. Quite helpful indeed.
    Regarding "tool or format that mapped tests to specific requirements" in your original post - did you consider Polarion? IIRC it supports mapping requirements to test descriptions. Telelogic DOORS are maybe also capable of that but I am not completely certain.
    #) convenience -- BTW we maintained test descriptions not in plain text but in simple HTML (you know few tags one can use in javadocs). With limited line length, it is almost as VCS friendly as plain text, even with tables:
    <!DOCTYPE "stuff to make HTML validator happy">
    <html><title>test description</title>

  • Need some OO design pointers for a Java card game I wrote for uni

    Hi,
    I hope a few of you Java sifus can help me understand I dilemma I keep finding myself in.
    I created a card game for a university assignment which works great but its not very OO at the moment.
    I only have 3 classes; a Card class, a Deck class and a Game class which contains all my GUI, AI, Game Controller, Player and Hand code.
    The assignment is over but I feel like enhancing the game, adding animation, multiplayer, several AI agents etc.
    The first thing I have attempted is animation and I've hit a brick wall. I am trying to create animation for my card game whereby I have an animation showing the cards being shuffled and then an animation which shows the cards being dealt to the players. The game then commences. The cards on the GUI then need to be clickable (MouseListeners?) to play the game. If you're running Windows 7, load up 'Hearts' and you'll know what I'm trying to achieve.
    I don't understand how the GUI, and Card class need to be seperated so that its good OO.
    If I give you a few snippets of code, it might explain the situation:
    A snippet of my card class is as follows:
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Card extends JLabel //Each card is a JLabel
         private int value;                    //variable for the value of the card
         private int suit;                         //variable for the suit of the card
         private ImageIcon frontOfCard;     //Displays the image of the front of the cards
         private ImageIcon backOfCard;          //displays the image of the back of the cards
         public Card (int Value, int Suit, ImageIcon front, ImageIcon back)
              value = Value;
              suit = Suit;
              frontOfCard = front;
              backOfCard = back;
              setIcon(backOfCard);     //To make it non-visible when dealt
         }As you can see, each card is a JPanel. I've been told by some I shouldn't extend JPanel but rather that I should have a BufferedImage/Image instance variable for each card as the image of the card. The thing is that I need each card displayed on the GUI which can then be clickable. When it is clicked, it is moved from the players hand, into the players move. - There needs to be an animation showing this.
    I've got the animation code figured out in terms of how to move 'images' around a screen to make a pleasing animation. The problem is there are no clickable listeners for images, so the Images needs to be inside some container; a widget which can fire events - Hence the reason I have chosen to extend JPanel for my Cards.
    and a Deck class, snippet is as follows:
    public class Deck extends JLabel //The deck will be shown on the GUI as a JLabel
         private ArrayList<Card> standardDeck;
         public Deck()
              standardDeck = new ArrayList<Card>();
              ImageIcon cardBack = new ImageIcon("CardBack.png");
              setPreferredSize(new Dimension(90, 135));
              setIcon(cardBack);
              int cardCount = 0;     //This variable counts the cards. Is used to assist in the name generation of the imageicon filename
              String str; //the imageIcon constructor accepts filenames as strings so this string holds the filename of the corresponding card image file.
              for (int a=0; a<4; a++) //putting the cards into the deck with the specifed parameters
                   for (int b=2; b<15; b++)
                        cardCount+=1;     //incrementing the card count (the card files are named 1-52 as integers)
                        str = Integer.toString(cardCount); //Integer is converted to string type before being added to string str variable
                        str += ".png"; //To complete the image filename, ".png" has to be concatenated to the string.
                        standardDeck.add(new Card(b, a, new ImageIcon(str), cardBack)); //creating and then adding the cards
         }This is how I envisage a new class diagram for my game:
    Card class
    Game Class <--- Holds a Deck instance, Players instances, and the GUI instance
    Player Class <-- Will contains hand 'instances' , but I will not create a seperate 'Hand' Class, I will use an ArrayList.
    AI Class extends Player Class
    GUI Class
    Deck Class <-- contains 52 cards
    My question is, how do I show the Cards on the GUI if my Cards are in a Deck and the Deck is held in the Game class?
    Please note that there are 52 cards, so potentially 52 images on the GUI, each of which needs to be clickable. When clicked, the cards are moved about, e.g. from the deck to a players hand, from a players hand back to the deck, from a players hand to a players current move hand.
    etc
    I've read that GUI, program control, and logic should be seperated. If thats the case, what do I have in my GUI class if the Cards (which are JPanels) are held in the Deck class which in turn is held in the Game class?
    Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
    I know what I have written may not be fully clear. I find it hard sometimes to fully convey a problem at hand. Please let me know if you don't understand what I've written and I'll do my best to explain further.

    Admirable, and the best way to learn, doing something that interests you.

    I don't understand how the GUI, and Card class need to be seperated so that its good OO.
    If I give you a few snippets of code, it might explain the situation:
    A snippet of my card class is as follows:
    Do a quick Google on the model view controller pattern. Your listeners are your controllers. Your JPanel, JButton, etc. are your view. The AI, Player, Card and Deck (and presumably something like Score) are your model. Your model should be completely testable and not dependent on either the controller or the view. Imagine you could play the game from the command line. Get that working first. Then you can add all the bells and whistles for the UI.
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Card extends JLabel //Each card is a JLabel
    (redacted)
    As you can see, each card is a JPanel. I've been told by some I shouldn't extend JPanel but rather that I should have a BufferedImage/Image instance variable for each card as the image of the card. The thing is that I need each card displayed on the GUI which can then be clickable. When it is clicked, it is moved from the players hand, into the players move. - There needs to be an animation showing this.Extending JPanel is fine. As you noted, you need something to add listeners to. However, I would separate things a bit. First, a card really only has a rank and suit (and perhaps an association to either the deck or a player holding the card). The notion of setIcon() is where you are tripping up. The card itself exists in memory. You should be able to test a card without using a UI. Create a separate class (CardPanel or something similar) that has a reference to a Card and the additional methods needed for your UI.
    I've got the animation code figured out in terms of how to move 'images' around a screen to make a pleasing animation. The problem is there are no clickable listeners for images, so the Images needs to be inside some container; a widget which can fire events - Hence the reason I have chosen to extend JPanel for my Cards.
    and a Deck class, snippet is as follows:
    public class Deck extends JLabel //The deck will be shown on the GUI as a JLabel
         private ArrayList<Card> standardDeck;
         public Deck()
              standardDeck = new ArrayList<Card>();
              ImageIcon cardBack = new ImageIcon("CardBack.png");
              setPreferredSize(new Dimension(90, 135));
              setIcon(cardBack);
              int cardCount = 0;     //This variable counts the cards. Is used to assist in the name generation of the imageicon filename
              String str; //the imageIcon constructor accepts filenames as strings so this string holds the filename of the corresponding card image file.
              for (int a=0; a<4; a++) //putting the cards into the deck with the specifed parameters
                   for (int b=2; b<15; b++)
                        cardCount+=1;     //incrementing the card count (the card files are named 1-52 as integers)
                        str = Integer.toString(cardCount); //Integer is converted to string type before being added to string str variable
                        str += ".png"; //To complete the image filename, ".png" has to be concatenated to the string.
                        standardDeck.add(new Card(b, a, new ImageIcon(str), cardBack)); //creating and then adding the cards
         }This is how I envisage a new class diagram for my game:
    I am not an animation buff, so I will assume the above works.
    Card classRemove the UI aspects to this class, and I think you are all set here.
    Game Class <--- Holds a Deck instance, Players instances, and the GUI instancePresumably this is where main() resides. It will certainly have a reference to model classes (player, game, deck, etc.) and likely the master JFrame (or a controller class you create yourself).
    Player Class <-- Will contains hand 'instances' , but I will not create a seperate 'Hand' Class, I will use an ArrayList.Does a player really have multiple hands? It seems to me more of a one-to-one relationship (or a player has a one-to-many relationship to Card).
    AI Class extends Player ClassWhy extend Player? Create a Player interface, then have a HumanPlayer and AIPlayer implementation. Common parts could be refactored out into either a helper class (delegation) or AbstractPlayer (inheritance).
    GUI ClassMy assumption is that this class has a reference to the master JFrame.
    Deck Class <-- contains 52 cards
    Yes. You may end up recycling this class such that a Deck can also function as a Hand for a given player. If there are differences between the two, create an interface and have a Hand and a Deck implementation. Coding to interfaces is a good thing.
    My question is, how do I show the Cards on the GUI if my Cards are in a Deck and the Deck is held in the Game class?You need to pass a reference to the appropriate view class. That is how MVC works. The controller receives a request from the view, dispatches to some model functionality you write (such as GameRulesEngine, Deck, etc.) and returns a result to the view (which could be the same view or a different one, imagine someone clicking 'high scores').
    Please note that there are 52 cards, so potentially 52 images on the GUI, each of which needs to be clickable. When clicked, the cards are moved about, e.g. from the deck to a players hand, from a players hand back to the deck, from a players hand to a players current move hand.
    etc
    That is up to you to write the animation code. In principle, you have a mouse listener, and then you take the appropriate rendering steps.
    I've read that GUI, program control, and logic should be seperated. If thats the case, what do I have in my GUI class if the Cards (which are JPanels) are held in the Deck class which in turn is held in the Game class?
    See above.
    Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
    You are welcome.
    I know what I have written may not be fully clear. I find it hard sometimes to fully convey a problem at hand. Please let me know if you don't understand what I've written and I'll do my best to explain further.No, you have been doing fine.

  • Unit testing and integration testing

    hello 2 all,
                    what is the diff bet unit and integration testing? in sap what is unit teesting consists of and integration testing consists of what?
    is this the work  of test engineers r whose work is this?
    take care
    love ur parents

    Hi Sameer,
    Unit Testing
    A unit test is a procedure used to validate that a particular module of source code is working properly from each modification to the next. The procedure is to write test cases for all functions and methods so that whenever a change causes a regression, it can be quickly identified and fixed. Ideally, each test case is
    separate from the others; constructs such as mock objects can assist in separating unit tests. This type of testing is mostly done by the developers and not by end-users.
    Integration testing
    Integration testing can proceed in a number of different ways, which can be broadly characterized as top down or bottom up. In top down integration testing the high level control routines are tested first, possibly with the middle level control structures present only as stubs. Subprogram stubs were presented in Section 2 as incomplete subprograms which are only present to allow the higher level control routines to be tested. Thus a menu driven program may have the major menu options initially only present as stubs, which merely announce that they have been successfully called, in order to allow the high level menu driver to be tested.
    Top down testing can proceed in a depth-first or a breadth-first manner. For depth-first integration each module is tested in increasing detail, replacing more and more levels of detail with actual code rather than stubs. Alternatively breadth-first would proceed by refining all the modules at the same level of control
    throughout the application. In practice a combination of the two techniques would be used. At the initial stages all the modules might be only partly functional, possibly being implemented only to deal with non-erroneous data. These would be tested in breadth-first manner, but over a period of time each would be
    replaced with successive refinements which were closer to the full functionality. This allows depth-first testing of a module to be performed simultaneously with breadth-first testing of all the modules.The other major category of integration testing is bottom up integration testing where an individual module is
    tested from a test harness. Once a set of individual modules have been tested they are then combined into a collection of modules, known as builds, which are then tested by a second test harness. This process can continue until the build consists of the entire application.
    In practice a combination of top-down and bottom-up testing would be used. In a large software project being developed by a number of sub-teams, or a smaller project where different modules were being built by individuals. The sub-teams or individuals would conduct bottom-up testing of the modules which they were
    constructing before releasing them to an integration team which would assemble them together for top-down testing.
    I think this will help.
    Thanks ,
    Saptarshi

  • My Mac is doing strange things: delaying between users, mouse flickering and bouncing, gets stuck with rainbow wheel flickering. I ran the appel hardware test and it detected an error: 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1233 Does anybody know what that means? HELP!

    My imac is doing strange things:
    -delaying between users: when closing session it goes to blue, then takes a while to appear users signin box, and then wont recognize mouse command to enter until a couple of minutes later... then everything seems alright until....
    -it gets stuck between things, the rainbow wheel appears and its just delays there forever....
    -and every now and then the mouse starts flickering and bouncing wildly onscreen.
    I ran the appel hardware test and it detected an error:
    4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1233
    Does anybody know what that means? HELP!

    WZZZ answered about where to get iStat. And do check the SMART status. If it is an overheating problem due to a fan or logic board problem, your hard drive is possibly cooking itself to death. If so it isn't a faulty hard drive even though the hard drive might fail. So assuming it's a temperature problem, even if you are able to repair things on the disk with software, that is working on symptoms, not causes. I could be wrong however.
    RE: AppleCare: Your iMac came with one year of AppleCare (Apple's warranty program), but within the first year you can buy 2 more years. You have to extend by the one year anniversary of purchase of the computer. Your 10,1 is too old to still be in the first year, and since you asked what it was, I'm sure you don't have it. Bottom line meaning is that whatever this problem turns out to be, you'll have to pay for it. Unless there is something like this. It is for 2011 iMacs with certain Seagate drives. You can put in your serial number for fun, but it looks like yours is too old. Lastly, some people have had Apple help them anyway if it is just out of warranty, but many have not. Your machine is one of these. Type in 10,1 in the search box. Is there an Apple Store near you? Just b/c it's out of warranty doesn't mean you shouldn't have it looked at by Apple. But no one here can say at all what Apple will or will not do.
    Hope you get it taken care of!
