Java coding standard- Number of methods in a class

Can anybody please tell me that what is the standard range for number of methods in a class. I need to refcator a very old code which contains large number of methods (50 to 100) in each class. Please help.

I got a huge screen and uses a small font ;)I have a wiiiiide screen. :D What's the maximum number of statements in a line?
I think that a method starts to get long when it's
more than 20 lines.Yepp, but I usually don't count line wraps. I'm not going to create another method for something like
if (abc == null
  && xyz == 17
  && udsfh == false
  try {
    whatever();
  } catch (StupidExceptionA e) {
  } catch (StupidExceptionB e) {
  } catch (StupidExceptionC e) {
  } catch (StupidExceptionD e) {
}It's annoying, but it also looks stupid to have a method that does nothing else but calling another method and catching the exceptions. That clutters the entire class.

  • Memory and the number of methods in a class

    if a class A has more methods than another class B, then whether instance of class A needs more memory than instance of class B? or only decided by properties?
    in other words, if i put more methods into an existing class, whether it affects performance?

    Non-static methods can be (abstractly) viewed as static methods:
    public class Clazz {
       private int i = 0;
       public void theMethod() {
          this.i = 5;
    }Is similar to
    public class Clazz {
       private int i;
       public static void theMethod(Clazz this) {
          this.i = 5;
    }(Note that this is by no means compilable). So if you can understand why static methods wouldn't be duplicated in memory, you can see why non-static methods don't need to be either.

  • Number of methods in a class?

    Just wanted to share, how many methods should be there in a class and how many lines should be there in each method. I feel 20/20 is a good count, means not more than 20 busniess methods per class and 20 lines per method. How do you guys feel about it?
    Thanks
    Sanjay

    There is an inherent danger in thinking this way about classes. Trying to come up with heuristics about how many methods and how many lines for each method tends to obfuscate the real issue, which is something along the lines of How complicated should a class be, and how can classes be created that dont consume inordinate amounts of intellectual overhead on the part of those trying to understand the application?
    The answer is to think of the design in terms of the objects they represent and the responsibilities, or behaviors, they have to collaborate on in order to fulfill the requirements. By thinking this way about your code this way, and applying just a few heuristics of responsibility assignment your code will naturally be highly cohesive and loosely coupled facilitating robustness and future maintenance.
    There are lots of good books on this subject, books like Applying UML and Patterns by Craig Larman. There are also plenty of good websites that address this issue, look for subjects like Responsibility Based Design
    Hope this helps.

  • Coding standards for developing java iviews

    Hi All,
    Are there any coding standards to be explicitly followed to develop Java iviews in SAP Enterprise Portal ? Does SAP has any specific java coding standards to get the SAP certification for the developed iviews ?
    regards,
    sreeram

    Hi Sreeram,
    > Are there any coding standards to be explicitly
    > followed to develop Java iviews in SAP Enterprise
    > Portal ?
    No. What you can find (for example within the PDK doc or partially created by wizards) are templates for the different kind of iViews, especially for JSPDynPages. But you have to care - even these templates are not really "clean" - there are objects used to store data which shouldn't...
    > Does SAP has any specific java coding standards to get
    > the SAP certification for the developed iviews ?
    No. What is needed is the proper use of namespaces, but this primarily concerns portal objects within the PCD. Some implementation things are to be considered, for example if i18n is offered, it really has to work. But SAP does not care about the source code of the iViews.
    Hope it helps

  • What's up with the Sun Java coding convention

    I thought Sun leading the Java development should also be a better example on the Java coding convention.
    They do publish a coding convention guide, I believe. But looking at Java core library's source code, so long, coding convention! :(
    Just looked at ArrayList.java source for the version 1.4.2. There are method names like RangeCheck(). Shouldn't a method start with lowercase? Shouldn't a method be verb first like checkRange() instead?
    And there are statements like this all over the place:
    if (foo)
    bar();
    shouldn't that be:
    if (foo) {
    bar();
    man, I thought this golden version of the Java Foundation Library code should be almost perfect by this time now. :(
    --

    if (foo)
    bar();
    // I think the most important part of the if statement
    is the condition for executing the following
    statement(s).
    // Using this style the condition is separated from
    the code by white space which I find easier to read
    // It's also easier to maintain as you don't have to
    remember to add {} if you need to add additional
    statements.I follow camickr's example. I think it's more readable. Whitespace is a good thing, IMO, and not used enough. Putting the brace on the next line down not only makes it easier to associate opening and closing braces visually but it sets the block of code off visually from the rest. Personally, I get a gestalt effect from that.
    I don't worry about a byte here or there. It might sound like heresy, but Moore's Law makes memory and disk space cheaper and more plentiful all the time. I think maintainability and readability trumps being miserly about bytes in my thinking these days. ;)
    Spare me the "inefficiency" lectures. I know - performance matters. The 80/20 rule says that byte won't be killer.
    It's too bad that Sun doesn't follow their own conventions. Don't they do code review there?
    Joshua Bloch didn't follow the standard? Too bad - he did a great job on the collections design. Maybe he delegated it to a younger coder and missed that during the code review. Yeah, that's it! ;)

  • Java Coding Conventions -  Debugging

    I am developing a Coding Convention document for a group of folks that are doing some remote development for me and while I have reviewed the Java coding conventions provided by Sun, I haven't seen anything that talks specifically about debugging. I have been asked to include some recommendation concerning where (and when) to put debuggin messages within the code (i.e. when you enter a method, etc.) Are there any conventions around this? I have my own practices but I am looking to find a commonly used industry approach. Thanks

    By debugging messages you mean comments? This is all I found in the doc:
    "Use XXX in a comment to flag something that is bogus but works. Use FIXME to flag something that is bogus and broken."
    I doubt that helps :P As far as an industry standard, not much out there that I could find.

  • Implementation of Oracle Coding Standards and Code Quality Checks

    I wanted to implement a list of coding standards and code quality checks for my oracle packages,functions,views,tableetc .
    for example
    All variables with number datatype should start with N_ and charcter type with C_ in all my tables & views definition.
    This can be identified during peer review & can be corrected, but i think this is a repeated process which i don want to burden the developers rather i wanted a tool which does all these kind of checks which can be automated.
    Is there any tool which does this operation or can someone give me a little idea how can i automate these stuffs bu creating a generic oracle procedure which can run through all the tables,views and generate a error report for those which are deviating from the standards.
    Thus we can reduce the manual effort spent on peer review, please suggest.
    thanks in advance

    +"Encoding the type of a function into the name (so-called Hungarian notation) is brain damaged—the compiler knows the types anyway and can check those, and it only confuses the programmer."+
    Linus Torvalds
    +"No I don't recommend 'Hungarian'. I regard 'Hungarian' (embedding an abbreviated version of a type in a variable name) a technique that can be useful in untyped languages, but is completely unsuitable for a language that supports generic programming and object-oriented programming—both of which emphasize selection of operations based on the type an arguments (known to the language or to the run-time support). In this case, 'building the type of an object into names' simply complicates and minimizes abstraction."+
    Bjarne Stroustrup
    2) Conditional Statements
    IF (x = 1) --> Wrong
    IF ((x = 1) AND (y = 2)) --> wrong
    IF x = 1 AND y = 2 --> RightIdiotic rules. The simple rule should be readability of code. Not how many brackets to use, and when not to use brackets. Minute standards like detracts from designing and writing proper code, fast and efficiently.
    There are many more rules (which is specific to ur application) which can be incorporated in the tool, there by giving consistency ,readability and easy to maintain for the developers.Bull. The more rules there are, the more difficult it becomes for programmers to write code. As it is no longer about writing readable and flexible and performing code - it is about double checking every single statement line against a huge list of rules about do's and dont's. It is not about getting the programmer focusing on solving the problem - it is about distracting the programmer with a complex and large rule list of how the code should look like.
    Sorry - but this rubs me the wrong way. In that environment, I would be the first to tell you to shove your "+many more rules+".
    I've developed systems in over a dozen languages over the years. I've seen all kinds of standards. The standards that work are those that are short, simple and sensible. Hungarian notation is not sensible. Writing reserved words in uppercase is not sensible. Dictating how brackets should be used is not sensible.
    What is sensible is using the de facto naming standards in use today - as per .Net Guidelines for Names (MSDN) and Code Conventions for the Java Programming Language.
    What is sensible is providing guidelines like bulk collection needs to be justified (not possible using SQL only) and use the limit clause to manage memory spend on the collection variable. Or how packages need to be used to modularise code, providing a public interface and private implementation.
    Standards are about creating a sensible and easy-to-use framework for writing code. It is not about creating a list of a 1001 rules that a developer needs to remember and adhere to, as if the developer is now part of some weird religious sect that has rules for every single aspect of human behaviour.

  • What are the best coding standards for ADF 11g?

    Hi,
    Do we have any link that will suggest the best coding standard practices used for ADF 11g?
    I am looking out from the perspective of some standards that can be defined before starting my project to know the team on how to
    1. Minimize Duplicity and max reusability of code
    2. Package the code
    3. Resource bundle usage and its calls
    4. Maintainning format consistency eg. date display format, number format
    5. Exception handling
    6. Logging
    7. Namiing conventions
    Also then we might have standards on
    1. Task flow dev.
    2. EO and VO creation standards
    3. UI development standards [purely ADF component based]
    Thanks in advance

              Double maximum(double x,double y,double z)
              return Math.maxResult( x,Math.maxResult( y, z ) );
    }Thank you,

    Do you have compilation errors or are you getting the wrong output? I could guess, but you need to learn to describe your problem better than "It's getting errors. What do I do?"
    Your maximum(...) method should return a primitive double, not a Double, but that's not your problem (autoboxing will occur, which you probably don't even realize).

  • Java coding in CAF

    hi  experts,
    i went through lot of blogs and docs on SDN regarding how to compose services and consume services, export RFC etc.,. In some of the scenarios we needed to write some code in java. I am pretty much new to java even though i know basic java. what is the best way to learn what kind of java code i need to write when i create some CAF. is there any how-to-doc explaining most used java code in CAFs?
    thanks
    sankar

    Hi Sankar!
    I am not sure, what you are searching for. However, I will try to explain the CAF a little bit.
    Basically, a composite application consists of business objects and (entity and application) services.
    A business object represents a logical data structure your application is aiming at (e.g., customer, sales order). For each business object you get an entity service which operationes represent the fundamental database operations such as create, read, update, delete, and a number of find operations.
    On top of the entity services of your composite application you can model and implement application services. The operations of the application services represent the business logic of your application. These operations are where your Java coding comes into play.
    Finally, you can expose some of your application services as web services which can then be externally invoked.
    Best regards
    Alexander

  • Java system error: Exception in method processFunction in BEX Broadcaster

    Hi All,
    We are trying to broadcast a BI7 Webtemplate with our enterprise portal. While clicking on "Create New setting " iam getting the error " Java system error: Exception in method processFunction ".
    Detailed error description is
    *Diagnosis
    An error occurred in the BI components on the SAP J2EE Engine.
    System Response
    Procedure
    Contact your system administrator to have the error analyzed in detail.
    Procedure for System Administration
    Start the Visual Administrator, log on to the SAP J2EE Engine and choose "<J2EE_SID>" ->"Server" -> "Services" -> "Log Viewer".
    The file "defaultTrace.trc" includes detailed information about the error that occurred. In Windows, you can find this file in the Log Viewer under "Cluster <computer name>" -> "Server <server number>" -> "<drive>:\usr\sap\<SID>\JC<INSTANCE>\j2ee\cluster\server<NUMBER>\log". ". In Unix, the file is located under "/usr/sap/<SID>/JC<INSTANCE>/j2ee/cluster/server<NUMBER>/log".
    If the file does not include enough detail about the error, you can increase the log level to obtain more information. To do this, choose "<J2EE_SID>" -> "Server" -> "Services" -> "Log Configurator". On the "Locations" tab page, choose "com" -> "sap" -> "ip" -> "bi" -> "webapplications". Using the selection list on the right side of the screen, you can increase the log level, whereby "DEBUG" represents the log level with the most information. You can save your settings by choosing the "Save" icon. The change to the log level is active immediately. Once you have successfully analyzed the error, you should set the log level back to its default value using the appropriate pushbutton; continuous writing to the log file negatively affects the overall performance of the system.
      Notification Number RSBOLAP 018  *
    Please let us know how to proceed

    Hi,
    This is a configuration issue. All components on the J2EE stack have to
    be on the same SPS level. Please make sure of this as a first step.
    For special requirements of BI with regards SPS levels please see SAP
    Notes 873996 and 1013369.
    Please run the latest version of the support desk tool as per SAP note
    937697 and ensure that there is no error and then check for the issue
    again.
    Otherwise, I suggest you open a BW-BEX-ET-BC msg with SAP.

  • XQuery Coding Standards

    Are there any XQuery coding standards defined for use in OSM?
    Or does Oracle provide any such standards for naming conventions, variable names, the case-sensitivity etc?
    Or are the standards similar to what we follow for Java?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance!

    OSM does not dictate a specific set of coding guidelines for XQuery, just as it does not for Java. Normally coding guidelines (whether for Java, XQuery or other technologies) would be defined for a given project based on the best practices and experiences of the System Integrator or Service Provider that is implementing OSM.
    Given that XQuery is an industry standard language, we would encourage you to follow best practices established in the industry.
    Generally, for XQuery code that the OSM product team writes we follow Java style naming conventions and style wherever applicable. This is a convention we find reasonable given our team routinely writes and reviews both XQuery and Java code so having the same naming convention makes sense.
    If there are are additional more specific questions you have on this topic feel free to ask them and we'll do our best to help you.

    Hi Pankaj,
    In the standard table say example MAKT in which Maktx is for material descriiption.
    Now when you create  a material using MM01 in EN language say your language the description get stores in english language..
    similary if you login in DE language and create a material using MM01 te description for the material gets stored in login language in maktx field.. This is how it works for different logon languages..
    so if you are fectching the maktx from makt you can use in the below way
    select matnr
              maktx
             from makt
             into table itab
            where matnr = 'your required material number' and
                        spras = sy-langu.
    now by the above select statment it gets the description in your logon language..
    I guess there is no transalation given by sap to transalate the records from one language to other language..  I surely believe there is no such option given for your case.
    In your case you need to use
    select mandt
              field
             spras
             fielddes
             from Z_test
            into itab
            where spras = sy-langu.
    you will get the descrition in your logon language.
