Java for Chrome

Hi,
I don't know why, once in a while my Java plugin is either not working, either missing or don't know what the **** is going on it with it but I can't use it.
I have tried to install Java 7 and it worked, but I need another version because I am using Chrome browser and on OS systems, Java 7 can not run on Chrome.
How can I get a version of Java that will work even on Chrome?
I have tried the steps presented on the following link but it doesn't work:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559?viewlocale=en_US
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, this is a definitely a step I would take in your troubleshooting.
Uninstall Google Chrome - Chrome Help
I think that since you followed the Apple support steps on enabling JAVA SE 6 again, and it is still not functioning on Chrome, the problem is with Chrome's current configuration on your machine and it should be cleanly reinstalled.

  • HT5367 Why does Java for OS X 2012-006 lead to this article!!!

On Apple.com -> Support -> Downloads, searching for Java for OS X 2012-006, opening the article to download leads to Java for OS X 2012-005.
So I can't download the Java, and it's telling me I have missing content.
    Could use please fix this?
    Regards

No I did have Java 7 installed.
Then I uninstalled it, using the guide from here: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml
It worked fine with 1.6.0_35 untill Apple released 1.6.0_37, then it just stopped working. In Safari, FF and Chrome.
Tried installing Java 7 again now that 1.7.0_9 had come out to see if that solved my problems, but no that was equally screwed. So uninstalled it again.
Where Java should run it just says "missing addon" or rather since it's danish "manglende tilbehør".
I daily support people with their computer, and I'm close to saying I have to reinstall my mac to get java working again, and that's just dumb.
If they would just link to a proper download article so you could download java 1.6.0_37 for mac os 10.8 then the world would be a but more peachy.

  • Disable Java for security?

    I have Mac OSX 10.6.8.
    I read these articles:
How to Detect and Protect Against Updated Flashback Malware
    http://tidbits.com/article/12918
Flashback botnet: The end of the Mac’s malware immunity?

    Beware the Morphing Flashback Malware
    http://tidbits.com/article/12818
So, I disabled Java in all 4 of my installed browsers.  So far I have not noticed any downside.
“Disabling Java will block Flashback’s “drive-by” attack, and is the most effective way for earlier users of Mac OS X to protect themselves.
              •          Safari—Go to Preferences > Security, and uncheck “Enable Java.” (While you’re in there, go to Preferences > General and make sure “Open ‘Safe’ files after downloading” is unchecked.)
              •          Firefox—Choose Tools > Add-ons, select the Plug-ins Tab, and click the “Disable” button next to Java Plug-in.
              •          Chrome — Type chrome://plugins in Chrome’s address bar. A list of available plug-ins will appear. Find Java and click the “Disable” link beneath it.
This doesn’t remove Java from your system, it just prevents Web browsers from launching or running Java apps. That’s enough to protect you from the drive-by nature of the Flashback attack. You’ll still be able to run desktop applications that require Java — a common example is things like Citrix’s GoToMeeting — but you may find you need to selectively re-enable Java in a browser to log in to services or download updates. In that case, you can selectively re-enable Java to get an app running, then disable it again when you’re done.”

I also disabled Java in Opera browser from opera:plugins
    Comments?

The latest threat is through authentic-looking, but fraudulent Adobe Flash installation dialogs which can only appear when using a browser. Diabling Java will prevent the trojan from entering your system that way.
Java can also run as a standalone app for other programs designed for it. I believe Limewire was one example. It's been defunct for years and I don't know if there are any similar programs in common use. Disabling Java in Java Preferences as you explained will shut that door for good.
For what it's worth I have not needed Java for anything since I bought my latest iMac. When I opened Java Preferences I got this:
I was kind of surprised that I never even installed it. It's fair to say you probably won't miss it.
The digitaltrends headline you referenced is misleading - Mac malware has existed in many forms for many years. OS X gives complete and unfettered access to any program, good or evil, that a user chooses to install by granting access with his login name and password.
This is nothing new, nor does it herald the "end of immunity" since immunity never existed.

  • Java on Chrome - what are you doing Oracle?

Google have made clear for a long time that the NPAPI support in Chrome will be switched off, and that plugins using NPAPI should move to PPAPI.
What is being done to migrate the Java plugin?
Chrome has by far the biggest user base, and as of update 42 (on Windows - much earlier on Linux) NPAPI is no longer supported. Which means no more Java.
Adobe has already updated the Flash plugin. What are you doing Oracle?

Once oracle in a forms forum suggested they had a way to launch java code from the web directly to java
installed on the client and not using a browser plugin. But they are cagey like let's wait and see if the customers
end up with no way to run applets for a few months and if so then we could assign some developers to this. Whereas from
the customer point of view, the very first minute that personnel cannot run mission critical applets is a serious problem
for which the customer feels they should come up with a plan to deal with it now. Now wait until it happens.
However web start or similar depends on java being installed on the client.
    This was an interesting article:
Android is the new Win32, the new Java and the new Flash
Marketing stuff but it points out an idea of using Android Runtime for Chrome” (ARC).
There's many other potential solutions possible such as getting the firefox source now that can run the jre plugin
and keeping it for later :-) Or taking the firefox source that won't run the plugin in the future and fixing it. Or some
other browser source that can run the plugin. This is something we customers can do. It is certainly something Oracle
can do but they have to have the think ahead mindset.

  • Help - I cannot set the Default Java for Browsers

    Hello:
I'm running Win 7, the Home Premium, 64 bit flavor. I have IE 8 and FF 3.5.8 installed. FF is the default browser. I've installed Java and when I go to the test page: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
I get a message which says: "Something is wrong. Java is not working."
HOWEVER, if I open a command prompt and type java -version, I get this:
    C:\Users\dogzilla>java -version
    java version "1.6.0_17"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode)
So I went to the control panel app, the advanced tab, and expanded the node for Default Java for Browsers. I have 2 problems.
    1. The checkbox for Microsoft Internet Explorer is greyed out; I cannot change any settings here at all.
    2. I checked the checkbox for Mozilla Family. Then, when I click OK, I get an error message which states:
"Unable to change browser settings. Please check that Mozilla or Firefox or Netscape is properly installed on the system and/or that you have sufficient permissions to change system settings."
Since I'm writing this message to the forum using FF, I'm going to guess that I have the browser installed correctly. So that leaves me with a permissions problem -- which I don't doubt. I have no idea where to start looking though. Especially considering I can run the files in the bin directory from a command line without any problems.
Does anyone know how I can solve the two problems I described in this thread? Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply!
I tried running as admin and no luck. Still experiencing the same problems.
I've did some more reading (much more in fact for what this problem should be worth) and other forums mention that on 64 bit Windows systems, both the 32 bit and 64 bit JRE need to be installed.
When I was running Win XP, I could just download the SDK, create an environment variable, and I was good to go. Now, it looks like if I just install the SDK, I need the JRE plugin download for just the browsers -- what a ridiculous waste/duplication!
    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi, Colin,
My apologies but I forgot to ask 2 questions: (1) What kind of Mac you have
(Intel or PowerPC)? (2) What version of CF are you running and what installer
    did you choose (8 or 8.0.1, 32-bit, 64-bit, etc.)?
    To start, try the following:
    1. Normally you'd shut CF down first ... but that's not necessary for you
    2. Open Java Preferences again
    3. Select Java SE 6 and move it (drag) to the top spot in both section (Applet
    Plugin and Applications)
    4. Open Terminal
    5. Type java -version (you should see 1.6.0_13 as the new version)
    6. Try to start CF again
This may not work (I've had issues with it) but it's technically how it's
supposed to work. With the Java Preferences utility, you're visually setting a
default JVM (you can do it with commands in Terminal but this is much faster
    and easier).
If CF still won't start, look for the jvm.config file in your CF application
    folder (try /Applications/ColdFusion8/bin or
    /Applications/ColdFusion8/runtime/bin -- the latter is where a jvm.config file
is on my machine for a particular version of CF that's installed similar to
yours). You can override the JVM in this file but, hopefully, that won't be
    necessary!
    Best,

  • HT4884 java for 10.6.8 is not working

my iMac says all software is up to date but websites that need java still say that i need to update to the latest version of java.

For OS 10.6.8, I found the latest Java update didn't work right, either. I restored full functionality by reinstalling Snow Leopard from the DVD, then updating to 10.6.8, plus updating Safari, etc, BUT NOT JAVA. Java works fine as long as you don't go too far with the updates: make sure they say they're for 10.6.x .
I think the problems begin with update 11, which seems to be tailored for OS 10.7 Lion and higher, but the installer doesn't check what OS you have before updating, nor is there any warning before you click install.
