JAVA_HOME points to a JDK and not a JRE.

Hi,
I am using Redhat Linux 9. From root i can able to find the java -version as
java version "1.4.2_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_06-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_06-b03, mixed mode)
But when i run jboss_home/bin$ sh run.sh i am getting the error as follows,
[root@arc bin]# sh run.sh
run.sh: Missing file: /root/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_06/lib/tools.jar
run.sh: Unexpected results may occur. Make sure JAVA_HOME points to a JDK and not a JRE.
run.sh: line 181: /root/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_06/bin/java: No such file or directory
I set Java_Home, JBOSS_HOME but why i am getting these error. Please let me know.

Don't know nothing about JBoss but, when JBoss starts up does it switch to it's own username?, i.e not root, if it did it probably wouldn't be able to access root's home dir to get to java, as root's home dir is usually not readable by any other user, just a hunch.

  • Itunes allows library to point to other folders and not copy files - WHY DOESN'T iPHOTO?

Hopefully Terence Devlin and other experts will see this. I really am intrigued as to iphoto behaviour and seek some clarification.
I just waded through 13 pages of an old thread that was locked where Terence kept saying iphoto was all one needed to work with one's photos and kept getting called on the fact he would not answer the question "where are my photos" (photos = files) because it was so darn dangerous for anyone to touch the actual files in the iphoto library.
I have a use case I need help on and an example of Apple's utter inconsistency here.
Inconsistency: iTunes lets me create a library all the while pointing to the original files that *I* have imported and structured in a given directory/folder stucture.  Yes it means I manually manage what is in itunes etc, but that's how I like it. The key thing is that itunes allows the choice to import (copy) files (which makes duplicate and doubles hard disk usage) or not.
iphoto does not allow that option.
I just converted to Mac from a PC and copied in over 100gb of photo files - some 16,000 photos. I import new pics to the Mac using Canon native software and store them accoring to a structure/taxonomy that *I* determine and want to control - not some software's predetermined idea of events or locations or whatever.  In itunes I can make 'music' an 'audiobook' or I can make a podcast 'music', I can edit the metadata to order things in the 'library' as *I* choose and the itunes library is coole with this without havign ANY of the soruce files in its library. Naively, I thought iphoto would follow a similar philosophy.
Use case: I discovered that iphoto has some very effective functionality for management of my uploads and sets etc in Flickr, but to do so I have to import my pics, obviously. So I did import the whole 'Pictures' folder - not for a moment considering that Apple would be dumb enough to copy every pic and make a duplicate, or that I might not get the chance to say yes or no to this in the settings, as per itunes.  Having looed for that optin and failed to find it I imported anyway to see what happened. After I realised that the Mac was heating up and files were being copied and I was going to lose another 100+gb of disk space I forced this to quit.  And thanks to others on that other thread I found the iphoto library and deleted the whole thing, getting back 100bg of drive space. All I want to do is use iphoto for the Flickr sharing/management functionality - I have no use for it otherwise.
Why would Apple think that not having to duplicate files is ok for itunes but not a viable option for iphoto? Why would I want to double the disk space used for every photo I store? At the very least iphoto needs to come with a health warning that it should only be used to import from external devices and be the sole manager of photos, unless one wants to use double the disk space.
So if I want to use the sharing (i.e. Flickr uploading and management of sets etc) capabilities, should I import all or some of my folders, do my work and then delete the library each time to reclaim the disk space?

If I import photos to iPhoto, the originals are deleted? So if I import from a card I have taken from my camera or if I connect my camera directly, the act of importing into iPhoto wipes them from my card?
Again, you need to check your facts before getting indignant. This is simply not true. It's an option you have and not one I recommend using. But it's only an option.
Storage costs money and I do not want to have two copies of every pic on my hard disk - especially given huge filesizes of RAW files today.
No one is suggesting that you have two copies. You have your iPhoto Library and then you back that up. Again, less indignnation, more careful study.
I do use other photo managers (e.g. native Canon tools) quite happily and they are far less 'exclusive' - i.e. I can use different apps with the same native file structure.
Using other photo managers makes little sense, any more than having two address books. How do you keep them in sync. Your comment about file structure is important, we'll come back to that.
If I want to go back to a Windows PC or any other machine and want to retain the "manual" file labelling and directory structure that I have implemented and been using for years, it seems that having a reference library that *I* know the taxonomy of is actually an advantage if I want to go somewhere else.
If you want to retain exactly the same filing structure you have now, then don't use any Photo Manager. Stick to the file manager. You'll be missing out on a lot of options, but hey ho, it's what you want.
That said, if you want to migrate from iPhoto to a Windows Machine then that's what File -> Export is for, and you can export from iPhoto to a folder tree matching your Events.
And this is a big one: This is true of any Photo Manger. Especially one with lossless processing - iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom et al.
Here's the principle: IT IS MY DATA AND I WILL DECIDE HOW IT IS LABELLED - WHAT THE FILENAMES ARE - AND HOW IT IS STRUCTURED INTO DIRECTORIES AND SUB-DIRECTORIES.  I WILL DECIDE WHICH APPLICATION I USE TO DO ANYTHING WITH THAT DATA AT ANY POINT IN TIME
DId you stomp your foot while writing those block capitals too?
But here's the thing: It's your data then why the heck are you dealing with Files?
This is the key difference, and frankly, unless you can geet this you're always going to have problems with Photo Mangers.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
See? It's about the data and the data and the file are not the same thing. Organising your photos based on the files is like organising a shoestore based on the boxes and not the shoes.
And here's the thing: anything you want to do with your Photos can be done either with or via your Photo Manager.
And again, I strongly stress, this is true of iPhoto, Aperture and Lightroom.
And please note: either with or via... Want to use a 3rd party editor, that can be done easily and so on.
Let me correct you. "If you use an APPLE Photo Manager then it's the go-to app for whatever you do with your photos.
    Doesn't matter who makes it.
Other Photo Managers may have more flexibility and enable greater user control."
Sure. iPhoto's a $15 app. Aperture is a $70 one. Adobe's Lightroom is about $150. Pay more get more options.
And remember where we came in here: You said you weren't able to choose where to store your files. You're wrong. You can. All I'm saying is that there's no point and more work to it.
For many - including me - the Apple way seems way too dictatorial -
Whoa. Apple are dictating nothing. You don't have to use iPhoto, you don't have to use a Mac. And remember:
...where we came in here: You said you weren't able t choose where to store your files. You're wrong. You can. All I'm saying is that there's no point and more work to it
Are Ford dictatorial demanding you steer the car using a wheel? Sheez.
and yes there are certainly advantages for some types of users of trusting one piece of software to do everything, however non-transparent it may be what it is doing or why, and with the dangers of trying to do ANYTHING else at all with one's photos.
And again, everything is quite transparent if you take a little while to understand it. You don't understand it because you're coming from a file management  and not a data management perspective. Also no one is suggesting using "one piece of software to do everything". iPhoto leverages the Finder for storage, QuickTime for display, uses and Open-Source database and so on, it protects your original file like a digital negative.
iPhoto may well not be the app for you. That's especially true since you don't understand it and are confusing it with a file manager. That's fine. But please, stop saying things that aren't true.

  • Having GP point to customer iViews and not "com.sap.pct"  default iViews

We are tailoring the SAP-delivered ESS Life and Work Events Guided procedures, and have now successfully built a couple of them.  However, when we execute these procedures, they point to the SAP-delivered ESS iViews, and not to the copies we have made
    e.g. pcd:portal_content/com.sap.pct/every_user/.............../com.sap.pct.erp.ess.employmentverif   INSTEAD OF
    pcd:portal_content/com.COMPANYNAME//com.sap.pct.erp.ess.employmentverif
I have searched high and low throughout the available documentation, and have not seen how I can point to our customied iViews.
Any insight will be gratefully acknowledged.
    Sincerely
    Rob

    Problem solved.
I was defining the actual webdynpro as the callable object.  What I should have done was invoke a Portal Iview, NOT the dynpro.  In doing that, I brought up the personalized iview, and everything worked like a charm.

  • Why SDK and not just JRE

    Hi,
I am amazed that for just running a Java application one needs the Java SDK and not the runtime environment only.
Has Oracle got shares with hard disk manufacturers ?
    Regards

The reason to require a JDK or our bundled jre+tools.jar is for the plsql debugger. The debugger use the jdi apis which are not included in the stock jre. If you never intend on using the plsql debugger you can use a jre and everything else will run just fine.

  • Point to File erratic and not working?

I'm running Dreamweaver CS4 (relatively new to Dreamweaver, but have many years of web development experience).  On my Mac the "Point to File" icon will create an arrow about 100 pixels up and it's motion is erratic and it will not allow me to point to a file in my "files" pane.  Is this a known bug?
I'm running on a 30" Mac HD monitor 2560 x 1600 and a Dell 24" 1920 x 1200.  It's as if the Arrow/pointer line gets confused about which monitor it's on and seems to be relative to the 24" Dell rather than my 30" Mac.

  • Create JAVA_HOME, point to JDK - LINUX UBUNTU

I'm trying to run an application on LINUX UBUNTU, and every time I do, it says to "make certain JAVA_HOME is pointing to a JDK and not a JRE." What does this really mean?
    Jeff

Yes, I have. I think that's all set up correctly. Actually, I also had Java 1.6 installed, but when I removed 1.6, or when I try to run the "upgrade-alternatives javac" script, I get this message:
"This package is an installer package, it does not actually contain the J2SDK documentation. You will need to go download one the archives:
    jdk-1.5.0-doc.zip jdk-1.5.0-doc-ja.zip
(choose the non-update version if this is the first installation)
    Please visit
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download/html
now and download. The file should be owned by root.root and be coped to /tmp."
So... I go and download one of those files, (I actually download the one with NETBEANS) and I still can't get this to work.

  • Getting this error :NB: JAVA_HOME should point to a JDK not a JRE

    HI All
I've installed jdk1.5.0_06 in windows enviroment.i've correctly set the java_home path for it.
Apart from it i've installed two servers one is Weblogic 9.1 and Tomcat 5.5 and NetBeans 5.5.1.
While running my project with the netbeans it tried to start the server. On starting the Tomcat server it showed me this error in the Tomcat log.
NB: JAVA_HOME should point to a JDK not a JRE
but while running Weblogic it worked smoothly. the java_home path has both the paths of jdk1.5 (installed separatly ) and the one which is bundeled with weblogic(jdk1.5)
Could anyone tell me the solution for the error.while running the project sseparatly is working fine. but i am not able to run it from NetBeans.

By why it is so that we bin folder was not selected,
because when i earlier installed weblogic then at
that time weblogic automatically made this entry
using its own internal jdk and the path was till bin.A JAVA_HOME directory should point to a directory containing all the java related stuff. The bin part is appended while executing javac or java command. Weblogic might be using the JAVA_HOME variable differently.

    Hi ,
Check the jdk versions in SDM and your machine.
Make sure the JAVA_HOME environment variable is set to correct jdk version which is used by sdm.
Where to check the JDK version in sdm:
You can check which jdk is being used from the following file: /usr/sap/<SID>/<INSTANCE>/SDM/program/config/sdm_jstartup.properties
        under value of property "sdm.JavaPath"
Go to your system desktop and select mycomputer->rightclick and select properties ->
Advanced ->environment variables ->System Variables check the variable JAVA_HOME=c:\jdk1.6
Both jdk versions should be same. Then only sdm will deploy the appl properly.

  • JAVA_HOME does not point to the JDK

    Hello !
I am running one project in Eclipse , but, i am getting some errors while running the project.
    Error is as follows :
com.sun.tools.javac.Main is not on the classpath.
Perhaps JAVA_HOME does not point to the JDK.
It is currently set to "C:\Zicom\java\jre1.5.0_04"
If anybody is knowing the solution please tell me, i need your help badly.
    Thank you very much.

Aw c'mon, that error message is self-explanatory.
What's your JDK home directory? Not something ending in jre1.5.0_04, I'll bet.
My Computer -> right-click -> Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables -> JAVA_HOME -> change it to the home directory of your jdk -> run Eclipse -> post back here.
    db
edit Late, as usual. Anyhow, remove the \bin at the end of your JAVA_HOME and try again.

  • NB: JAVA_HOME should point to a JDK not a JRE

i have set the JAVA_HOME properly but it's still not working....can anyone of u help me out?

And where did you get tht little gem? It is definately not in the Installation instructions for Tomcat.
In fact nothing like that is anywhere in the Tomcat documentation, except as one step to take
before running the configure script, before running a make, when setting Tomcat up as a daemon
    on a unix domain.
So, I can only assume you have gotten that from someone/somewhere else, and that individual
probably knows very little about what he/she is talking about. On Windows, you need to set
the environment variable only when using the catalina.bat batch file to start Tomcat (and you
don't even need to do that if you edit the setenv.bat batch script properly). When running Tomcat
as a Service (or from the "start menu" or a desktop icon or "double clicking" on Tomcat.exe, this
    variable is completely irrelevant.
Edit: Okay, looking at the readme type stuff that comes with the zipfile download, there is
also something like this, but that is, once again, something that should be done
before the installation of Tomcat, most likely, so that the first time Tomcat runs, when installed
using the zipfile rather than the installer, it can configure itself.

  • [SOLVED] Why does my JAVA_HOME point to jre instead of jdk?

I am having a strange phanomenon.
I have jdk7-openjdk installed, but I still have
    % echo $JAVA_HOME
    /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre
This is only with my current user. When I try root or a freshly created user, I correctly get
    % echo $JAVA_HOME
    /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk
So I guess this is caused by something in my home directory. As 'grep -r JAVA_HOME ~/.*' does not give any hints, I do not know how to investigate this further.
Maybe someone here has any idea how to find out more.

As far as I understand, the order is not important in this case, because jre.sh only overrides JAVA_HOME if it is not set before.
I also like to avoid making configuration changes when it looks like the default config should work fine.
But brebs' reply inspired me to run 'sh -x /etc/profile', which finally shed light into my issue:
    +++ . /home/cbuehler/Siemens/Teamcenter10.1/Visualization/bin/visviewwebinit /home/cbuehler/Siemens/Teamcenter10.1/Visualization
    ++++ '[' X_ = X_True ']'
    ++++ '[' -n /home/cbuehler/Siemens/Teamcenter10.1/Visualization ']'
    ++++ export EAI_INSTALL=/home/cbuehler/Siemens/Teamcenter10.1/Visualization
    ++++ EAI_INSTALL=/home/cbuehler/Siemens/Teamcenter10.1/Visualization
    ++++ '[' -d /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre -o -h /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre ']'
    ++++ export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre
    ++++ JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk/jre
I have Teamcenter Visualization installed in my home directory. And this changes my JAVA_HOME in /home/cbuehler/Siemens/Teamcenter10.1/Visualization/bin/visviewwebinit:
    # If JAVA_HOME points to the top level java directory, reset it to point to the JRE directory.
    if [ -d $JAVA_HOME/jre -o -h $JAVA_HOME/jre ]; then
        export JAVA_HOME=$JAVA_HOME/jre
    fi
I commented this part out and now everything works fine.
Thank you very much for your help.

Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
Here is what I have tried...
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

  • How can I display date+time and not the point number in excell?

    Hi everyone,
Could anybody tell me how I can save date + time to a file, so that  I can display on a diagram(excel) : date+time in (ox) and data (oy)? :
My program sets in (ox) the point number and not the date+time....( although  date and time are written correctly in the column...)
    Any help would be great,
    Thanks,
    regards,
    Marc

    hi there,
excel uses 01.01.1900 00:00 as the time offset, LabVIEW uses 01.01.1904 02:00, so you can't display the correct datetime in excel when you write the time as a fractional number of seconds from LabVIEW. you must format the datetime in LabVIEW to a string and write that to the column. use the "Format Date/Time String" - function and for example "%d.%m.%Y %H:%M:%S%3u" as the format string (see the functions help for more examples). you also could format your data to a string using "Format Into String" - function and write the file as a 2D string array. the decimal point you have to use depends on your system and its settings, but you can specify the decimal point in the Format string like "%.;%f" (means fractional number with point as decimal point).
    best regards
