Java inheritance problem

class Super {
public void method1() {
method2();
private void method2() {
System.out.println("Method2.....Super");
class Sub extends Super {
private void method2() {
System.out.println("Method2.....Sub");
public static void main(String [] a) {
Super sup = new Super();
sup.method1();
output :- Method2.....Super
Hi,
Can anyone explain why this program executes method2() from super class ? I thought method2() from the Sub class should be executed.

DrLaszloJamf is correct.
If you don't want method2 public but you still want to be able to override/use it in subclasses, make it protected instead.I wrote "method2 can not be private". It can be public, protected or the default access level (when Super and Sub are defined in the same package).
I strongly recommend using the @Override attribute which will generate a compile-time error if you fail to override correctly:
class Super {
    public void method1() {
        method2();
    void method2() {
        System.out.println("Method2.....Super");
class Sub extends Super {
    @Override void method2() {
        System.out.println("Method2.....Sub");
    public static void main(String[] a) {
        Super sup = new Sub();
        sup.method1();
}

  • Multiple Inheritance problem persists in Interfaces

    Hi,
    I tentatively made a program and found that multiple inheritance problem of C++ persists even with interfaces. Although this is definetely a special case but I want to know what is this problem known as( i know that this is perhaps known as diamond problem in C++). And is there a way out of this thing.
    interface one

    interface z extends one,two
    public class xyz implements z

This is not the so called diamond inheritance problem. What you have here is an ordinary name clash. And as has been noted you can resolve it by qualifying which constant you're referring to, like
    System.out.println(one.i);
    For the diamond inheritance problem to apply both the one and the two interfaces would need to inherit a common ancestor (that's how the diamond is formed). Furthermore the common anscestor would need to carry implementation which would then be inherited two ways, once via one and once via two. This is the diamond inheritance problem Java is avoiding by allowing single inheritance of implementation only.
    P.S. My previous post was posted my mistake.

  • Java inheritance

    Hi Guys,
    I just wanted to get your opinion on the following issue. In our
    hypothetical scenario, we would have:
    class A {
    int id;
    class B extends A {
    String name;
    Only class B is supposed to be persistent, so there would be a single JDO
    metadata file that would have 2 fields: id and name.
    Right now, it looks like when Kodo is trying to match field (from JDO
    metadata) against attributes in Java class, it does not take into
    consideration Java inheritance and as a result it complains about missing
    attribute id.
    I figure that Kodo may be parsing the java source code instead of using
    Java reflection to get the attributes.
    Any thought? I mean, we can obvuiously work around it, it is just
    something that came up recently and I wanted to see what you think about
    it.
    Thank you,
    Petr

    BTW, the reason is the enhancer can't access and wrap A's id field
    accesses...
    for example, one might have toString () { return "ID:" + id;} but since
    A has not been enhanced as PersistenceCapable, the app can access id in
    a variety of invalid states. Nor will Kodo have access to the proper
    field accessors/mutators/wrappers (esp. if id were declared private).
    Also, Kodo does -no- source examination for non-IDE based usage, either
    at enhancement time or at runtime. (the JBuilder and SunONE integration
    components use the respective IDE's code parsers to assist in metadata
    generation for uncompiled classes).
    Steve Kim wrote:
    JDO can only provide persistence for fields defined at the highest
    persistence-capable class.
    To bypass this problem a simpler solution would be:
    abstract class A {
    public abstract int getId ();
    public abstract void setId (int id);
    class B extends A
    int id;
    String name;
    // getters and setters
    And futher, if one needs concrete As (though usually that doesn't make
    sense), one can provide implementation of the abstract methods and
    override them with B's methods. Note that methods in A which access id,
    should use the accessor methods and not directly manipulate id.

  • Java Programming Problem

    Hi all,
    I was looking for this java programming problem which had to do with a large building and there was some gallons of water involved in it too somehow and we had to figure out the height of the buiding using java. This problem is also in one of the java books and I really need to find out all details about this problem and the solution. NEED HELP!!
    Thanks
    mac

    Yes, it will. The water will drain from the bottom of
    the tank until the pressure from the water inside the
    tank equals the pressure from the pipe. In other
    words, without a pump, the water will drain out until
    there is the same amount of water in the tank as in
    the pipe The water pressure depends on the depth of the water, not the volume. So once the depth of the water inside the pipe reaches the same depth as the water inside the tank it will stop flowing. This will never be above the height of the tank.
    I found this applet which demonstrates our problem. If you run it you can drag the guy up to the top, when water in his hose reaches the level of the water in the tank it will stop flowing out.

    Seems like you are missing a necessary jar-file in your forms-classpath. Check the libraries attached to your project in Jdeveloper and add them to the path.

  • XML mapping inheritance problem; missing class indicator field

    Hi!
    I am currently working on a project which involves mapping a large domain model on a XSD schema. For this we use Toplink 10.1.3.1 which is mostly great. But now I have a problem while wanting to use class inheritance.
    In my XSD I have the following defined
    <xs:complexType name="Traject">
         <xs:sequence>
              <xs:element name="SoortTraject" type="SoortTraject"/>
         </xs:sequence>
    </xs:complexType>
    <xs:complexType name="SpecialTraject">
         <xs:complexContent>
              <xs:extension base="Traject">
                   <xs:sequence>
                                 [some elements]
                   </xs:sequence>
              </xs:extension>
         </xs:complexContent>
    </xs:complexType>My XML is an implementation of this XSD and looks like this
    <Trajecten>
            <Traject xsi:type="SpecialTraject">
                     [implementation of the elements]
             </Traject>
    </Trajecten>My domain model corresponts to the XSD, so there is a Traject object and an inherited SpecialTraject object.
    In the mapping I used the Advanced properties->inheritance on both descriptors telling the Traject descriptor that it was the 'Root Parent Descriptor' ('Use class indicator field' -> 'use XML Schema Type attribute', 'Use class indicator dictionary') and the SpecialTraject what it Child Descriptor was ('Traject').
    When I test my mapping it always results in the same error (no matter how I configure this inheritance mapping). It says :
    [TOPLINK-44] missing class indicator field
    Descriptor: XMLDescriptor(Traject --> [])What am I doing wrong? Does anybody know a sollution?
    Best regards,

    This is the changed XML descriptor file. When I deploy the file it automaticly overrides the old file so it ain't possible that I was still using the wrong file

  • Object Inheritance problem between projects

    Hi,
    I have two projects lets say project1 and project2. From project1 I instanciate processes of project2 as subflows. In addition I have one bpm object in project1 (lets say object1) that inherits from a bpm object in proyect2 (lets say object2). So project1 depends on project2 to make this inheritance happen. When I call the subflow I pass the object1 and as inherits from object2 there is no problem (input argument). For the output argument I have to cast from object2 to object1. And here is where I have a classcastexception. If all the processes are in the same project it works fine and there is no exception. But when splitting in two projects it fails. Seems that it is something related to the folder structure in the catalog that should be the same for both projects and that is the reason why it does not work, but as one project depends to the other I can not put the same folder structure in both catalogs because in the dependant project it is duplicated.
    Has anybody can give me an idea on how to solve this?
    Thank you very much in advance
    Kind regards

  • Java Inheritance and Types

    Hello,
    I have some super/sub classes, listed as follows:
    UnitMgr
    SpecialUnitMgr (child of UnitMgr)
    Unit
    SpecialUnit (child of Unit)
    I'm designing a lot inventory system where my SpecialUnitMgr applet will have many instances of Unit. Right now I have the system set up so that UnitMgr contains an instance var declared as "Unit aUnit;". UnitMgr as a parent class, takes care of common code between the many different UnitMgr child classes.
    Right now I have SpecialUnitMgr setup to use the inherited parent/super variable aUnit, and I have extended the functionality of Unit with SpecialUnit (added more instance vars, etc). I wish to use extended features of SpecialUnit within my SpecialUnitMgr class, but I am unable to do so because of type conflicts (i.e. i cant access SpecialUnit vars or methods from the instance aUnit because it is declared as Unit in UnitMgr).
    I want to keep a single instance of Unit or SpecialUnit going, but I'm not sure how to do so.
    I am wondering how to get around this problem, do I use Reflection? Is my design bad? I am trying to maintain the super classes as a core package.
    Jeff

    If I understand the problem correctly, you want generics. public class UnitMgr<U extends Unit>
        protected U aUnit;
    public class SpecialUnitMgr extends UnitMgr<SpecialUnit>
    }See http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/language/generics.html for more on generics.

  • Java Language problem: Multiple interfaces extension.

    Not just any interfaces. Take a close look:
    public interface interface1 {
         public void aMethod();
    public interface Interface2 {
         public void aMethod() throws Exception();
    }As you can see, both interfaces define a single method with the same signature... but one of them throws Exception.
    Consider "merging" these two interfaces:
    public interface Interface3 extends Interface1, Interface2 {}Should the resulting method throw Exception? Eclipse says it does. But I think it shouldn't. Here's the logic:
    If the method in Interface3 DIDN'T throw Exception, it would be able to extends the method in Interface1 and Interface2, because it is not throwing checked exceptions not thrown in the superinterfaces' methods definitions... however, as It DOES throw Exception, it can't extend the method in Interface1, because Interface1's method doesn't throw Exception. Am I right?

    It's not a naming problem. I'll tell you where the problem comes from:
    I'm working with EJBs. I (personally) like to separete the business "signatures" of the beans in a single interface.
    So, for every bean I make, I have a single interface that defines the method.... it says NOTHING about the beans.
    Remote beans methods have to throw RemoteException, so I have to throw RemoteException in my business logic classes. I then make two interfaces that implement this interface. One remote (that just extends this interface and EJBRemote) and another local that extends EJBLocal and overrides all the methods so they don't throw RemoteExceptions (Local bean interfaces' methods must NOT throw RemoteException).
    For example:
    public interface Beaninterface {
    public void aMethod() throws RemoteExeption();
    public interface Bean extends EJBRemote, BeanInterface {}
    public interface BeanLocal extends EJBLocalObject , Beaninterface {
    public void aMethod();
    }No problem so far.
    Here's where the mess comences:
    I want to EXTEND this bean interfaces so I make a bean based on the former.
    I will add another method to the business interface of the new bean:
    Business Interface
    public interface ExtendedBeanInterface extends BeanInterface {
    public void newMethod() throws RemoteException;
    }This new interface defines the new method and inherits the method from BeanInterface
    Remote Interface of the new bean:
    public interface ExtendedBean extends ExtendedBeanInterface, EJBObject {}Nothing wo do there.
    Here is the real problem:
    I have to extend the ExtendedBeanInterface, but that will bring two methods that throw Remote Exception. I have no problem overriding both methods in this interface.. but how about if thyere are 50 methods in the BeanInterface? I'm not going to go ahead and removing each method for evety bean I extend. That makes NO sense. What I think I should do is to extend BeanLocal so those methods that were brought from BeanInterface be known not to throw RemoteExeption.
    public interface ExtendedBeanLocal extends EJBLocalObject, ExtendedBeanInterface, BeanLocal {
    public void newMethod();
    }And THERE is where I hit the wall, because when I deploy the bean, the application server informs me that the resulting interface is throwing RemoteException (courtesy of ExtendedBeanInterface).
    Accoring to my logic about Java Language, by extending BeanLocal, aMethod() shouldn't throw RemoteException as a result in ExtendedBeanLocal.
    So... what is the next step? Go with JCP?

    Then I closed cmd window ;but one error has occured saying that cmd window can not close .
    My friend has told me that she is also having windows xp and JDK1.4 ; ctrl+c is working properly in her command prompt.She has written the above same code in her computer and it executes properly.
    Even though she has not written following statement:
    "frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);"
    when she exits from application window ,her cmd window gave same problem of only blinking curser.But when she press CTRL+C ; her command prompt starts responding by giving root.But my command prompt is not giving
    positive responce to "ctrl+c" when I am exiting java application.
    Is it possible to solve this problem without giving statement
    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); ?
    Why my command prompt is not responding to CTRL+c?
    How can I tackle this problem ?
    Is there any other key which can be used in command prompt of Windows Xp?

    Is it possible to solve this problem without giving
    statement
    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    ?this is because Swing have started some non-daemon helper threads for its internal purposes and the default close operation for frame is just HIDE_ON_CLOSE. So, the system will not exit because those non-daemon thread still not terminated.
    What is the problems setting the default close operation to JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE ?
