Java issue with permissions repair

Hello.
I know of the list of issues that I can safely ignore when repairing permissions. However, recently I've had issues with Java on Safari and when I repair permissions, I get this:

This is a tad bit more text than I am used to, and am wondering about the console.jar and "Virtual Machines" as I"ve not seen these before. Any ideas? Anything I should worry about?
Oh, Java test site says Java is working fine and is the most recent version.

I´m also for a week now with a big problem in Mail - hundreds of messages got blank and disappeared after "rebuild", now it won´t even synchronize. I put this in a thread in the Mail forum, but solutions only go as far as backups - which I don´t have. It started after installing the last Java patch and it still the same after updating to 10.6.5 and permission repair (which shows:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
to sum up: Sent mails are lost, received mails before certain dates (few days back in 1 account, years back in another and no trouble in the third one) won´t get downloaded again, even with new setup of the account - and all started after the java patch.
Help is very appreciated (maybe I can restore my sent mails from somewhere?!)
Dani.

  • Issues With Permissions With iTunes/iMac

Hey there - I hope someone out there can help me. I have all my media files (music, movies etc) on the MacHD. There are two profiles on the iMac...for myself and my partner. I have over 200 gigs of stuff that we both pull from. Lately, my partner is getting errors saying he does not have enough permissions to purchase from the iTunes store or even add to the library. This had happened before, and Apple support told me to move all files to the MacHD and point iTunes to that folder and all is well. Did that...and here we are again. I was told iTunes has to have the files where it wants them or it will not function and will not allow either profile to add to the library. I want to have both profiles pull from the same library and add files and so on. I also want iTunes to cooperate and do what I tell it to do. Anyone else have this issue with permissions?

I do not think that iTunes usually plays well with this kind of combined user library. But the real iTunes gurus hang out in the iTunes Apple Discussions.

  • Please help me...major issues with authorized repair center

I could really use the advice of those more "techie" than myself. About a month ago, my iBook G4 crashed on me. I brought it to an authorized repair center and they replaced the hard drive for $270. When I got it home, it seemed to be acting funny - freezing, slower, etc. I noticed that About this Mac under the Apple menu said it had 128 MB of memory, yet when I brought it into the repair center it had 256 MB. Yet when I installed an extra memory card I had laying around it said 600-something (I forget), which is impossible, because my Mac can only hold 512 MB total. Anyway, very long story short, I've brought it back once to complain that my computer wasn't preforming the way it used to. I was told two things. One, it's because I'm running Tiger on an old machine (bullsh*t, I ran Tiger since July with NO problems). Second, they said my computer is screwy because I'm running 10.4.4, which is known for having bugs. Is this true? The same day they told me there was "nothing wrong with your iBook, sorry" it crashed again, and I can't get it to start! I've made an appointment with the owner of the repair shop, and I'd like to be able to defend myself because I think they screwed up. I'd like them to fix it for free, or refund my money and get the HD back. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. Sorry this is so long, I love my Mac
PS...I got it to start for about 3 minutes lastnight before it crashed again. I cannot open the Finder, and anything on the Dock that I try to click on shows a large grey question mark. What's that mean?

Did you inform the repair center that your RAM reported had dropped? Tiger I would not run on anything less than 512 MB of RAM anyway. I've read stories that repair centers frequently remove any third party RAM you might have installed, and this may be another one such case.
The gray question mark means the files have basically relocated themselves to someplace the system can't find them. If you didn't move anything, it is possible the directory got munged. To repair the directory, first make sure your data is backed up, and then follow these instructions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If that indicates something it can't fix, get Alsoft Disk Warrior 3.0.3.
It is possible the RAM you have in there is bad, and that may be why you are detecting less RAM too. RAM can go bad at anytime. So can the memory slot itself go bad. And frequently the issues which make it go bad are undetectable by any hardware test. Though if a hardware test detects an issue with RAM, that's believable.

  • Having issues with permissions on external hard drive.

I'm very new to my MacBook Pro, and I'm having an issue with my external hard drive. I used it to bring important files (mostly music) from my windows 7 laptop to my mac. Once I finished that I noticed that I was missing some of my music which luckily I have on CD so I uploaded them to another computer and loaded them onto my EH. This is where the problem occurs, when I drag my music from my EH most of it gets copied, but a small number end up giving me an error and won't go to iTunes. I've dug a little deeper into the issue and it all comes back to not having proper permissions to us my EH. However the songs that were imported still open in itunes when clicked on. I've tried looking for the lock symbol under Get Info, and it isn't there.
    Any Ideas?

Yes - with Windows/Mac 'compatibility, it's really a one or the other compatibility - without third party software. Just as Paragon has software that will enable you to read & write to an NTFS volume on a Mac, so they have software for Windows that will read Mac-formatted drives - http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/.
NTFS, with Paragon's NTFS for Mac, is probably the best way to go if you want to 'share' the drive with both Macs and Windows machines.

  • DVD drive issue and permissions repair

Forgive me if I'm combining two issues in this posting.  If they are not related I can separate them out.
I don't know if my drive is going, but I have a DVD for a tv show that I wanted to watch on my Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard (latest patches).  For a while now I've had to keep reinserting the disc because it's not registering.  I put it in, and can hear mechanisms, then it spits it back out.
I watched one disc, ejected it then tried to play another and it just would not load.
I thought of checking disk permissions, thinking maybe the OS had some permissions problems that may be preventing it from reliably reading the disc.  The disk utility reported a number of permissions errors and owner errors, so I repaired the permissions and it reported that it was completed successfully.  I thought I'd run the verify permissions again, just to make sure the errors had really been repaired, and they're still there - some of them were gone, but there were others reported.  I ran the repair and verify a number of times now and nothing's changed.
    My questions:
    1.  Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
    2.  Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?
    3.  Would I gain anything by booting to install media and running the verify and repair from there?
    Thanks much in advance!

Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
If you've repaired permissions, and you still have the problem, then the answer is no.
Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?
Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
Would I gain anything by booting to install media and running the verify and repair from there?
    No.

  • Java issue with web analysis

    Hi,
Web analysis is taking too long to start on client machines. I had this issue a couple of years ago with java 1.4.10. hyperion came back with a solution to increase the memory java uses on both the server and the client.
    »Xms128m -Xmx256m -Xss2m » in the Java plug-in (Control Panel>Java plug-in>Advanced)
I cannot see on java 1.5.11 how to add this in. Java 1.5 was meant to make web analysis faster. In some environments it has but in this partilcuar case web analysis is very slow.
I would appreciate it if anyone could suggest a way to make web analysis faster.
The server environment is unix. Can a cache setting be added to java?
The client issue is the most pressing one.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nathan

    Hi,
Go to Java Control Panel, select the Java tab. You'll see Java Applet Runtime Settings section. Click View and fill the Runtime Parameter with your settings.

  • Issue with geeksquad repair(s)

I purchased a MacBook Air almost two years ago. Since then, it has been out for repair for 56 days (and counting).
First, the hard drive crashed in 10/2013 (took one week to repair). Then, it was intermittantly overheating (03/2014), which GeekSquad said was due to a faulty battery (another week). However, when I got it back after the battery replacement, I noticed that the trackpad felt loose-- a problem that had not been present before. So I sent it back, but the repair technicians could not replicate the loose feeling and sent it back without adjustment, requiring it to be sent in yet again (two more weeks). (I was still not satisfied with this "resolution". The trackpad continued to feel loose at times, especially after long periods of unuse.)
Last month, I noticed that the back panel had pulled away from the body and there was a crack in the fan cover. I returned it to GeekSquad. Monitoring my repair online, I noticed that twice they had to order and wait for parts to arrive. Imagine my dismay when, nearly a month after sending it out, I went to pick it up in the store and IT WAS STILL BROKEN. From the attached image, you can see that the back frame is not flush with the sides and there are stress marks around the screw where it appears that the repair technician simply tried tighten it to resolve the issue.

I am very frustrated with this experience and disappointed that I continue to be without my computer. I am frustrated that the customer service at Best Buy cannot do anything to rectify this situation, saying that since my computer has not been sent for repair three times for the same issue, it does not qualify as a lemon. I am posting here in hopes that this can be resolved. I have purchased 3 MacBooks and countless other items from Apple directly and have never had such problems getting my devices serviced.

    Hello brittlandk,
Computer problems like an unresponsive track pad and nonexistent battery life are frustrating for any laptop owner, but it can be downright aggravating if you are unhappy with your computer after receiving service. You should be able to trust our Geek Squad agents with your laptop when it’s in for service, so I truly apologize if we didn’t leave you feeling confident in our repair services.
While rare and far from ideal, there are times when a redo service is required to fix a reported issue. Should something like this be necessary, we do try to expedite the process in that your computer is pushed to the front of the service line to ensure you get your computer back as quickly as possible. Having said this, I realize your computer is currently in for a redo service, and we greatly appreciate your patience while we re-evaluate the situation at hand. Please know I’ll be keeping an eye on your service to make sure everything progresses as it should from here.
There is one thing, however, that I want to take the opportunity to clear up. You mentioned that one of our representatives explained to you that you’d only receive a potential replacement computer underneath our Geek Squad Protection (GSP) plan if your device experienced the same malfunction 3 times during the life of the plan. While this is true of our newer plans, your plan was purchased prior to this change. This means your plan’s terms and conditions (found here) state that after two qualifying hardware repairs and a third one is diagnosed, you should qualify for a “No Lemon” exchange. However, it seems your computer has only had one qualifying repair, so this could explain why an associate stated this path was not a viable option at this time.
Having said this, I’ve sent you a private message with your current service history to help clarify what qualified and what did not. You may view it by logging into the forum and clicking on the envelope icon in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
    Respectfully,

  • Having Java issue with Mountain Lion upgrade

I have a few websites that run Java applets that are not working since I ugraded to Mountain Lion. I am trying to do my usertesting.com stuff and they have said that apple has not fixed this known issue yet. Is this true or am I just missing something obvious? thanks!

This is because while you've re-installed the system, you've preserved the user account. You need to do a  "clean" install meaning a reformat and install. If the Mac orginally shipped with Lion or ML you can redownload via Recovery Partition but if the Mac shipped with Leopard 10.5.x or Snow Leopard 10.6.x then you need the OEM discs that shipped with it. You can call Apple and they will send you the discs for a nominal charge.

  • Java issues with Safari?

Hey everyone, I'm new to Apple Laptops and I'm having a bit of an issue.
There is a website that I have to log into for work, each time I log into with Safari I get the error message "Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException " and nothing works on the website. On my old PC it worked with IE and someone told me to try Camino on the MacBook, and it works well in that. I would really like to use Safari because I like it better, can I get passed this?
I'm running a Newly Refurbished MacBook Pro 13 with OS X Lion and according to Apple Software Update, I'm all up to date with iCloud and everything.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

OS X 10.7 Lion does not include Java. It can be added -
    • go to Applications > Utilities and run the java Preferences item. When it doesn't find a usable install of Java it will offer to download and install it - accept that offer.
    • or you can download Java directly, here -

  • Issue with permissions to upload files into Apache web server to OS 10.8.2

    Hello everyone;
I setted up Apache web server and mysql to OS 10.8.2 Mountain Lion. It's working fine except for the permissions. I can't upload files into the web site directory. Doesn't recognize, e.g., the PHP function "move_uploaded".
One problem for my is that I can't modify the permissions by "Terminal" app since it telling me that the "Process completed" and I can't write any script.
    Any suggestion will be welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

My only question now would be how to speed up Safari's 6.0.1 performance in 10.8.2 or do I just accept that it's a little slower than it was, which is fine. Are other folks having this issue?
I was primarily passing along info about my particular download speed and for the Web Confidential 3.8 people: make a backup of your passwords b4 installing 10.8.2 or be prepared to upgrade.

  • Java issue with Mac OS X v10.6.8

I'm having trouble with Java after the 10.6.8 update. When I load a site that uses Java, the Java applet will run in its own process instead of within the browser. I went to Java preferences of course and made sure that "Run applets within the browser process" was selected but it makes no difference. I cleared the cache, I rebooted, I uninstalled and reinstalled, nothing is working.
Has anyone else been having this problem? Any ideas for a fix?

Java Applet works with 10.6.7 but with 10.6.8:
Safari does nothing (not even an error message). Same problem with other Applets
Firefox shows the applet in its display rectangle but not at the right dimension. Changing the Applet tag parameters width and height changes both the display rectangle and the applet size. Thus the Applet is never fully visible.

  • Issues with permissions

    Sometimes, when I'm updating a package, i get a message like, i.e.:
    Different file permissions for /xxx/xxx
    Package: 777
    Disk (or filesystem, i can't remember): 755
What is the common way to approach this issue?
Should I chmod the directory recursively or the files so the permissions will be the ones of the package?
Is there any utility for fixig the overall system's permissions?, AFAIK, fsck checks other type of errors.......... which maintenance procedures should i periodically do to ensure the system's health?
    Thanks!

  • Issue with permissions when using SFTP (FTP over SSH)

I have an issue when i use SFTP, for some reason users are able to browse the system's root directory and other user's directories. Also some users don't have access to the FTPRoot alias and some do. If i connect using FTP everything is fine. Can someone shed some light on this issue.
    Thanks,
    Toros

There is absolutely no correlation between FTP and SFTP.
SFTP is actually a file transfer run over SSH and therefore subject to the normal account/shell restrictions, just as if the user logged in via SSH.
What you're confusing it with (easily done) is FTPS, which is SSL-encrypted FTP. This uses SSL/TLS to secure a FTP connection and is subject to the account restrictions defined in the FTP server, independent of the user's shell access.
So, in other words, SFTP uses a SSH session to transfer files. FTPS uses SSL to secure a FTP session.
There's no trivial way to prevent a SFTP user from walking through the directory tree since there's no difference between their SFTP session and an SSH session.

Hi. First time on iPod forums, and needing help please! Every time i sync my new iPod nano, i recieve an error message after about 10secs , saying thta I do not have enough access privelidges to write to the disk "(my ipod's name)", and also that "iTunes could not save to your Music Folder because you do not have write access. Check the permissions on your Music Folder and subfolders, then try again." I changed the permisision on the iTunes Music folder in My Documents to give me full control including write access etc, but the error message is still present. I suspect it could have something to do with the permissions for folders actually on my nano, but I've got no clue really. Please help!

  • Disc permissions repair

Note: the item below is not a problem, just a curiosity item:
If I do an apparentl disc permissions repair, followed immediately by another disc permissions repair, why do I get items that need repair.  There are entries like the following:
    Permissions repair complete
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Classes/jconsole.ja r", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are lrw-r--r-- .
    Repaired "System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Classes/jconsole.ja r".
User differs on "System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/lib", should be 0, user is 95.
    Repaired "System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/lib".
    What is happening here?

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.
