Java Language Specification error reports

Well, I wanted to report a typo in The Java Language Specification, Third Edition (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/download/langspec-3.0.pdf), so from http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/ I clicked on the "feedback form" link (which points at http://developers.sun.com/contact/feedback.jsp?&category=doc&mailsubject=Java%20Language%20Specification%20Feedback). This was redirected to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/join/overview/index.html which offers no such feedback form. Consider this sort-of-broken link as the first problem I'm reporting.
The second problem is in the aforementioned pdf, section 4.8 (Raw Types), page 58, where on can read:
"The type of the member(s) of Inner depends on the type parameter of Outer. If Outer is raw, Inner must be treated as raw as well, as their is no valid binding for T."
This should be instead:
"The type of the member(s) of Inner depends on the type parameter of Outer. If Outer is raw, Inner must be treated as raw as well, as there is no valid binding for T."
I think a forum category should be created for just this: error reports about the documentation (pdfs, APIs, support web pages).

Your intentions are admirable, but you are probably wasting your time. This is a forum for Java development related questions and 99.5% of the visitors are not related to Oracle at all. most likely nothing will be done with your information.
I think a forum category should be created for just this: error reports about the documentation (pdfs, APIs, support web pages).It is a good idea actually, but such a thing would need very tight moderation and then there is still the question of how to arrange that something is actually done with the reports.

    2. How to convert String to int?

    You can convert only string wrapped numbers in to
    int, not all strings.wrong. It all depends on the algorithm you use and
    what meaning you wish to assign to the outcome...
    Take a hashcode for example, you can create one from
    a string and it is an integer value.I think he meant one can only parse strings containing "0-9" to int's.
    That is not true of course, because you can parse strings with base > 10.

  • Isn't it inconsistent in JLS (Java Language Specification)?

    In section 11.2 Compile-Time Checking of Exceptions, Chapter 11 Exception , JLS,
    it says "Static initializers (8.7), class variable initializers, and instance initializers or instance variable initializers within named classes and interfaces (8.3.2), must not result in a checked exception; if one does, a compile-time error occurs."
    but in 8.6 Instance initializers, it says "An instance initializer of a named class may not throw a checked exception unless that exception or one of its superclasses is explicitly declared in the throws clause of each constructor of its class and the class has at least one explicitly declared constructor. "
    Isn't is inconsistent?

    From the Java Spec Report
    http://www.ergnosis.com/java-spec-report/java-language/jls-11.2.html
    jikes 1.14 implements this. The Sun jdk 1.3.1 compiler does not.

    any help would be appreciated - peter jurkat

    Hi Peter,
    The error message "NoClassDefFoundError", means that the java class loader cannot find the file "OracleDemo.class" in subdirectory "SourceCode/BookPrograms/ASCII/ch05"
    Unfortunately, based on the [lack of] information you have supplied, I can only guess as to how to correct this problem. Hopefully, some of what I suggest may help you.
    When you launch the JVM, the class loader(s) search for required "*.class" files by searching a set of directories (and their subdirectories) whose names are determined via your configuration. Part of that configuration is an environment variable named CLASSPATH.
    If you claim that you were previously successful in launching your java applications, but now you are not, then obviously something has changed in your configuration -- possibly the value of your CLASSPATH. Again, I wouldn't have a clue what that change is because you haven't supplied much information regarding your environment.
    If you are using an IDE (like "JBuilder" or "eclipse"), perhaps you have modified its configuration?
    So basically, you need to correct your configuration/environment (probably by changing the value of your CLASSPATH environment variable) so as to allow the java class loader to locate the "OracleDemo.class".
    Judging from the information you have supplied, it seems that you are on a linux/UNIX platform. If that is the case, then have you seen this lesson (from the "Java Tutorial")?
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/unix.html
    Hope this helps you.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Java language proposal #1

    The overhead of reference counting has led to a preference for mark-and-sweep garbage collection. But this has some obvious disadvantages as well. For example, creation of temporary objects chews up memory; this reduces performance due to having to search for unused objects during garbage collection. Although incremental garbage collection can spread the search cost evenly over time, this does not reduce the cost.
    It is evident that both reference counting and mark-and-sweep have their place. Although it is conceivable that the JVM could dynamically choose between the two for any given class, this seems difficult to implement.
    The Java language specification should allow the programmer to specify whether a class is reference counted or not. To maintain compatibility, reference counting could be specified by adding the "transient" keyword to the class declaration.

    It wasn't only the "overhead" of reference counting that led to the use of other methods of garbage collection. There was also the problem that circular references (which are very common) meant that islands of inter-reference could never be collected, leading to memory leaks. This is the case in Visual Basic, for example, and it's sometimes surprisingly difficult to write code to get circular references unlinked so that garbage collection can take place.
    There's also the problem that the existing method of garbage collection (which can be summarized as "Don't refer to it and it will go away") appears to be too complicated for many programmers to understand, leading them to voodoo coding styles to "get around it". So I don't support making it even more complicated.

  • Create java: error reporting

    Hey all,
    Does anyone have any suggestions for how to receive more specific error messages from the compilation of java sources through sql statements? For example, I just tried compiling a piece of code and received the following error message:
    ORA-29511: could not resolve Java class
    I'm not surprised that I received the error, but it's a little inconclusive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

    Umm.....so....I just realized this may actually be a problem with the HTML DB interface. I had assumed it would transparently pass db error messages to the front-end. -_-;;
    I'm actually having trouble replicating this error now. Right now, when I try the following three commands I receive the following replies:
    1) Statement processed.
    2) Function created.
    3) ORA-29541: class ARDB.CalendarInterface could not be resolved
    The 'create java' statement should be returning a 'cannot find class' error.
    Hmm.....excuse the long post.

  • Report Script returns no data and "java.io.FileNotFoundException" error

    When attempting to write to a new file (Eg: C:\TEST.txt), Report Script returns no data and "java.io.FileNotFoundException" error occurs.
    This error occurs only in Essbase 9.3.1.3 release, however it works fine in release 9.3.1.0.
    After running the report the script, it pops up the follwing message:
    "java.io.FileNotFoundException: ..\temp\eas17109.tmp (The system cannot find the file specified): C:\TEST.txt"
    When checked the TEST.txt, it was empty.

    Sorry folks, I just found out the reason. Its because there was no data in the combination what I was extracting.
    but is this the right error message for that? It should have atleast create a blank file right?

  • While generating the huge report getting Java Heap Space Error

    Hi All,
    We are using XML Publisher 5.6.2. we have to generate the huge report which contains more than 300 sql statements. Since our schema structure we can not reduce the queries. Now we are facing issue while generating the report. It takes lot of time and gives 'java heap space error'. We are using data template and RTF template for generating excel report.
    Can anybody help me to resolve the issue? or is there any other way to generate the huge reports?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    I had seen the forum, but we had already adjusted the parameters in the oc4j "-XX:MaxPermSize=128m -Xmx512m" values to 4096. but still we are getting the java heap space error. since we increased the size of xmx value, XML Publisher occupies 61% of memory of the server. B'coz of this our other applications are getting affected.
    and also, since we are using XML Publisher 5.6.2, can you please assist us how to set the scalable property to 'true'.
    Thanks,
    Ramya.

  • Java.rmi.RemoteException: Protocol error reported by the card! why?

    Hello,
    I am currently trying to run the JCK 2.2.1 SecureRMIDemo using SmartCardIO instead of OCF, but getting an error:
    java.rmi.RemoteException: Protocol error reported by the card
    (in my last post I succesfully ran the RMIDemo using my SmartCardIO implementation, see http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5405634&tstart=15)
    So here is what I did:
    - I succesfully loaded the server app (com.sun.javacard.samples.SecureRMIDemo) on the card without changes.
    - I created an new accessor class: public class PINCardAccessor extends SmartCardIOAccessor (I wrote SmartCardIOAccessor for the RMIDemo, it should work fine as an accessor)
    - The contents of PINCardAccessor class and SecureOCFCardAccessor are the same, just the class declration makes the difference
    - Here is the most important part of my main method:
                   ca = new PINCardAccessor(false);
                   JavaCardRMIConnect  jcRMI = new JavaCardRMIConnect(ca);
                   jcRMI.selectApplet(appAID);
                   // send PIN
                   System.out.println("Sending PIN...");
                if (! ((PINCardAccessor) ca).authenticateUser( PRINCIPAL_APP_PROVIDER_ID ))
                     System.out.println("Wrong PIN!");
                     System.exit(0);
                   Purse myServ = (Purse) jcRMI.getInitialReference();
                   if(myServ == null)
                      throw new Exception("Received null instead of the initial ref");
                   // print balance
                   System.out.println("Balance: "+myServ.getBalance());And finally here is the debug output:

    Oh, thanks for pointing at the JCRE Spec, it is very informative, but i still have not found the problem yet.
    If i understand everything right, the communication's flow is
    SecureClient <-> PINCardAccessor <-> SmartCardIOAccessor <-> MySecurityService <-> SecurePurseImpl (with help of SecurePurseApplet)
    probably i made a mistake in a protocol of one or more layers.
    - MySecurityService, SecurePurseImpl and SecurePurseApplet are EXACTLY the one's from com.sun.javacard.samples.SecureRMIDemo of JCDK 2.2.1, so there cant be any mistake (?).
    - SmartCardIOAccessor worked fine in my RMIDemo tests, see http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5405634&tstart=15 - there is also the implementation)
    - SecureClient must be obviously correctly
    so maybe it's something about PINCardAccessor? hmm...i havent found anything, but here is the complete code:

    STEPS
    The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
    1) from EDQ director we have imported the EDQ_CDS,EDQ-REFERENCE DATA & EDQ_HISTORICAl DATA packages sucessfully.
    2) Created dnd.param file in SIebel server SDQCOnnector folder.
    3) Copied the libdnd.so file to siebsrvr lib directory(32 bit)
    3) In dnd.param file we have mentioned the javalib file and instllation directory path(<Siebsrvr roo>/dnd/install)
    4) Unzipped the EDQ-Siebel Connector files in dnd/install folder
    5) Copied the dnd.properties file in dnd/install directory and modified it accordingly to point to installed EDQ instance.
    6) Configured the Siebel components for EDQ integration.
    7) Realtime EDQ jobs are running.

    Hi Monoj,
    A few questions:
    - What OS is Siebel running on?
    - What version of the Siebel connector are you using?
    - Which libdnd.so file are you using?
    - What's the contents of your dnd.parms file?
    thanks,

  • Error Report when calling Java thru C

    Currently we have encountered some issues with our C code calling java module in NT- Itanium 64bit machine. We get the following error message (we don't get this on the 32 bit):
    Another exception has been detected while we were handling last error.
    Dumping information about last error:

    LIBRARY NAME = (N/A)
    Please check ERROR REPORT FILE for further information, if there is any.
    Good bye.
    Has anybody seen this and has any suggestions? using JDK 1.4
    Thanks

    I was thinking JVM should the classpath when it is invoked. But obviously it is not and we need to assign the classpath ourselves when invoking from native side. Thanks for pointing that out. For other people's benefit the following is the code piece I for initializing JVM.
    char* str1;
              char* str2;
              char* classpath;
              str1 = "-Djava.class.path=";
              str2 = std::getenv("CLASSPATH");
              classpath = (char*)malloc(strlen(str1) + strlen(str2) + 1);
              strcpy(classpath, str1);
              strcat(classpath, str2);
              if (str2 == NULL)     {
                   printf("CLASSPATH environment variable is not defined.");
                   exit(1);
              m_VmArgs.version = JNI_VERSION_1_4;
              m_options[0].optionString= classpath;
              m_VmArgs.options = m_options;
              m_VmArgs.nOptions = 1;
              m_VmArgs.ignoreUnrecognized = JNI_TRUE;
              JNI_GetDefaultJavaVMInitArgs(&m_VmArgs);
              /* Create the Java VM */
              m_Res = JNI_CreateJavaVM(&m_Jvm, (void**)&m_Env, &m_VmArgs);
              if (m_Res < 0) {
                   printf("Can't create JVM\n");
                   exit(1);
    thanks,

  • Report server failed service specific error 186

    Gurus!
    I am using oracle 9iAS enterprise,
    Report server failed service specific error 186
    Kindly help!

    I believe you'll need to edit your tnsnames.ora file located in \ORACLE\806\NET80\ADMIN. The last line of this file should read something like
    Rep60_SYSNAME, Rep60_SYSNAME.world = (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp) (HOST=SYSNAME) (PORT=1949))
    where SYSNAME is the name of the PC Reports is installed on.
    I had this same error, and once I modified this file, everything seemd to work fine.
    Good Luck
