Java newbie & text files

I want to create a simple program that will read a text file and put it in a variable to use later in the program. I can't figure out how to assign characters from the text file to a variable. Please bear with me, this is my latest attempt:
import java.io.*;
public class FileReader1 {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
     File inputFile = new File("nfo.txt");
FileReader in = new FileReader(inputFile);
String intext;
int c;
while ((c = in.read()) != -1)
intext = (String)in;
in.close();
System.out.println(intext);
}

I used the BufferedReader method on the FileReader method to get a string instead of characters, thus I could easily assign the value to a string variable. Below is my solution:
import java.io.*;
public class FileReader1 {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
     File inputFile = new File("nfo.txt");
FileReader in = new FileReader(inputFile);
          BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(in);
          String s;
          String intext="";
while ((s = br.readLine()) != null)
          intext = s;
System.out.println(intext);
in.close();
}

  • Java loading text file and doing stuff help

    Hello,
    Can anyone help me with this, I just don't know where to start..
    I need to create a java program which will load up a text file. The text file must be no bigger than 1000 characters (so somewhere there needs to be an exception I am guessing)
    Once loaded, it needs to run some methods on the text file which each return a single statistical count, the methods need to count things like number of white space, number of vowels, frequency of each vowel (this would not need to return a single count but maybe update some sort of array?) , number of printable characters and number of consonants.
    Any help would be very good.
    Dean

    Thanks for the help so far
    But first things first, I should start at the
    beginning.
    I am thinking maybe start with something like from
    the Sun tutorial for 'CopyCharacters.java'.
    So we have the first part of the program that loads
    up the txt file....
    (I really would like to have GUI for this, but I
    can worry about that once the actual program is
    working
    import java.io.FileReader;
    import java.io.FileWriter;
    import java.io.IOException;
    public class CopyCharacters {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws
    IOException {
    FileReader inputStream = null;
    FileWriter outputStream = null;
    try {
    inputStream = new
    FileReader("input_characters.txt");
    Right, now its time to actually read what is in the
    file and use some of the statements you have
    suggested, can anyone help me get started with this?
    Dean
    public class DeanHomeworkAssignment {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    //Put your code here
    }There ya go, that should get you started.
    Start by writing the code to open the file.
    This isn't that difficult.

  • How to print a text file using Java

    How can I print a text file using Java without converting the output to an image format. Is there anyway I can send the characters in the text file as it is for a print job? I did get a listing doing this ... but that converted the text to an image format before printing....
    THanks,.

    Hi I had to write a print api from scratch, and I did not convert the output to image. Go and read up on the following code. I know there is a Tutorial on Sun about the differant sections of the snippet.
    private void printReport()
         Frame tempFrame = new Frame(getName());
         PrintJob printerJob = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getPrintJob(tempFrame, "Liesltext", null);
         Graphics g = printerJob.getGraphics();
                    //I wrote the method below for calculations
         printBasics(g);
         g.dispose();
         printerJob.end();
    }This alone wont print it you have to do all the calculations in the printBasics method. And as I said I wrote this from scratch and all I did was research first the tutorial and the white papers

  • By Java how to delete some lines in a text file containg some character?

    Hello All,
    I am having a text file [Basically It is a Sql File]. its containing some commented lines.
    All i need to do is, By using a java Method I have to delete All the commented lines in That file .....
    For Example if My file is like following.
    /**** Commented By Kannan *********/
    Select * From Employee;
    go
    /******************** Commented by Others ********/
    Select * From DevMembers;
    go
    /*** Ends here **********/
    And the output file would be
    Select * From Employee;
    go
    select * From DevMembers;
    go
    can Anyone Help me in this regards,
    Akram Kannan

    BufferedReader should probably wrap the FileReader if you will be reading line-by-line. Same with the Writer.
    And a simple -
    if (  "/*".equals(record.substring(0,1) ) ... should handle the comment locations bit.

    Since the word "TEXT" is formed of 4 letters, you would read the text file 4 bytes by four bytes. Wrong on two counts. First, the file may not be encoded 1 byte per character. It could be utf-16 in which case it would be two byte per character. Second, even if it were 1 byte per character, the string "Text" may not start on a 4 byte boundary.
    Consider a FileInputStream object "fis" that points to your text file. use fis.read(byte[] array, int offset, int len) to read every four bytes. Convert the "TEXT" String into a byte array "TEXT".getBytes(), and yous the Arrays class to compare the equality of the read bytes with your "TEXT".getBytes()Wrong since it relies on my second point and will fail when fis.read(byte[] array, int offset, int len) does not read 4 bytes (as is no guaranteed to). Check the Javadoc. Also, the file may not be encoded with the default character encoding.
    The problem is easily solved by reading a line at a time using a BufferedReader wrapping an InputStreamReader wrapping a FileInputStream and specifying the correct character encoding.

  • Fill a text file from java code

    Hello,
    I've written a java code to insert some informations in a database and
    I also want to save the same informations in text files (.txt).
    Thanks you for your suggestions or your advice of a tutorial that can help me to perform successfully this task.
    J.S.

    Writing to a file is pretty easy in Java. A simple way is to use the PrintStream class.import java.io.*;
    public class MyClass {
      public static void main(String[] arg) throws IOException {
        PrintStream ps=new PrintStream(new FileOutputStream(new File("someTextFile.txt")));
        //now use println(String) to write lines of text to the file
        ps.println("This is a line in the file");
        //always close the PrintStream when finished
        ps.close();
    }Alternatively, for a good tutorial, click the 'Tutorials' link in the left column on this page.

  • How can I open in java file a text file?

    Hi !
    For example I have a java file name Pencil.java and I have a text fie name Box.txt
    I want like that if ( a == b ) {open Box.txt}
    How can I do that ?
    Thanks.

    Yes I want to see what this text file contains. Like clicking to a text file with mouse and opens. Then I can see what it contains.
    I have a Java document Pencil.java and I have a text file Box.txt
    I will write a java code in pencil.java ( that I dont know ). Then when I enter a number from keyboard with
    Scanner write = new Scanner(System.in);
    int a = write.nextInt()
    if (a == b) {                } opens Box.txt
    For example
    I write to command prompt
    java pencil
    It wants from me a number : I will enter 3.
    It is same as b .
    Then Box.txt file opens.

    How to get the source code of an HTML page in Text file Through java?
    I am coding an application.one module of that application is given below:
    The first part of the application is to connect our application to the existing HTML form.
    This module would make a connection with the HTML page. The HTML page contains the coding for the Form with various elements. The form may be a simple form with one or two fields or a complex one like the form for registering for a new Bank Account or new email account.
    The module will first connect through the HTML page and will fetch the HTML code into a Text File so that the code can be further processed.
    Could any body provide coding hint for that

  • How to know they is space or carrier return when java read a text file.

    Hi,
    Please help.
    How to know they is space or carrier return when java read a text file.
    The reason is that. I want to use java for loop to read each part of value. for example: first part is the items name. After the space (I need to tell java when this is a space here and its need to skip) , following by the items prices in double value and space again (need to skip also) and etc.
    item name1
    item name2
    item name3
    item name4
    item name5
    <--- here is the space to skip and another loop to read following items prices
    item price1
    item price2
    item price3
    item price4
    item price5
    <--- here is another spcae again. and so on
    thank in advance!

    You can check to see if the sting you read in is just nothing, depending on how you're reading it in:
    if((str = inStream.readLine().trim().equals("")))
    // skip and get ready for the next section
    else
    // handle the next item
    The trim() method gets rid of all leading and trailing spaces and I'm assuming you're using a stream that can use the readLine() method that returns a String.
    I hope this is clear. Let me know if it isn't, I'll try and word it different, or post how you're reading the values in if you need more help.

  • Java Code in a text file

    Hi,
    I need an information if whether anything like this can be done in java or not !!
    The requirement is to place the jave code statements into a text file and dynamically execute these statements which have been placed in the file. for eg: if a text file "test.txt" contains a statement
    System.out.println("Hello world"); without the class being defined or the main method being defined. I need to execute this statement and print out hello world on the console.
    is this possible ???
    I would be using JDK 1.2 or 1.3 for this but certainly not 1.4.x and above
    please do let me know if this problem can be tackled in anyway !!
    Thanks in advance !

    I'd suggest first checking to see if the code in question would also be valid code in an interpreted language like Javascript, Groovy, or BeanShell.
    If it is, then use an interpreter for the appropriate language, an interpreter written in Java and which you can plug into the Java program you're using.
    Otherwise, I suppose you could wrap a class and method around the code, and compile and run that.
