Java on iBook running Leopard

I'm a teacher and we have to use a java app called PowerTeacher 1.1 Gradebook.
I am having trouble getting the app to run correctly on my own personal iBook. It will load and run correctly on a Windows desktop machine. Our IT guy in charge of getting Powergrade to work, isn't really interested in helping me because the district uses all Dell machines running Windows XP. He will only help me with Windows computer issues... not with anything on my own personal computer. Theoretically, java apps should run on either OS, right?
Any ideas or suggestions will be most appreciated.
The app will load, but all the features will not work. I can't add new assignments, view final grades, etc. Here is the error message I get:

Dick,
First, thanks so much for your response.
Second, Where do you get the "patch"? I have to ask the IT in charge of Powerschool where to find the patch and beg him to install it. The school's official "platform" is Windows XP and will have to beg him to do this.
Third, I just installed Leopard 10.5.5 and the Powergrade java app still doesn't work correctly. The program files don't load completely. The program starts but it is not full functional.
Fourth, the program won't load at all on a Dell laptop, but will work on a Dell Desktop.
Fifth, I will ask the IT guy to contact powerschool tech support about this.
Sixth, once again thank you very much!

  • Can't get disk utility to work with leopard - iBook running super slow

I have an iBook G4 and it's running ssuuppeerr slow but I can't get disk utility to come up after I press C down. I don't know if I'm pressing it at the wrong time but I restart with the C pressed and it gets to the apple screen and it won't go anywhere else. It will restart normally but not with the C key. I've been trying for an hour and I can't get it to get to disk utility!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you want Disk Utility on your iBook or do you want Disk Utility on your install disc?
For Disk Utility on your iBook, go to Finder>Applications>Utilities and look in the Utilities folder. You will find Disk Utility there, and drag it to your dock where it will be handy to have it.
For Disk Utility on your install disc, insert the install disc and then restart and hold down "C" as you boot up so that you will boot from the install disc. Then choose your language, and then look for Disk Utility in the menu bar--I don't remember if it says "Utilities" or "Disk Utility". If you need to repair your startup disk (i.e. your internal hard drive), you would boot up from the install disc to do this.
However, I am wondering if you have enough RAM to run Leopard. You will get a big boost in performance if you max out your RAM. Leopard will run best if you can put a 1 GB RAM stick in your RAM slot.
If you want to repair permissions after installing and updating Leopard, you can do this with Disk Utility on your iBook. Repair permissions until there is nothing left to repair.
If you have more questions, please post back. Also, which ibook G4 do you have?
    Good luck!

  • Running Leopard On Ibook G4 14"

    Hi all
I have a issue with running Leopard on my Ibook, it is a 1.42 GHZ and 1500 Mg of ram.
The problem that I am encountering is that the system is processing at full capacity 75-100% and I am not running anything in the background, why???
I have a G5 with dual processors and running Leopard, looking at the activity monitor on both machines, I can clearly see that there are several components running in the background on the Ibook and nothing on the G5, on the G5 when at idle it is using from 1- 10% CPU use, and when the Ibook is at idle it is all over the place, from 10- 100% but mostly in the high numbers.
    Any answers I would appreciate.
PS" this is with a new installation on the Ibook, with Tiger I had none of these issues
    Thanks
    Sigi

Hi. What are the processes using that amount of CPU? It could be that Finder is still indexing. Post back with a list of the 'runaway' processes.
    Good luck,

  • USB drive locks up ibook running 10.3.9

    Hi All,
I didn't know if this question was more appropriate for this forum or the ibook forum, as I do not know if this is a SW or HW problem at this point. I decided to post here.
I have a G4 1.2Ghz 12" ibook running 10.3.9, and I recently purchased a Rocport 4U usb HD from a vendor called Rocstor. After I formatted the drive, I don't have any problems copying (drag n drop) files to the HD... but when I attempt to either open a file on the usb drive or copy back to the ibook HD, I get the spinning beach ball. The only way to get out of this freeze is to unplug the drive. It does not matter how I format the drive (Mac OS Extended or Fat32) -- the same thing happens. Also note the following: The drive works just fine on a Windows XP laptop when formatted as Fat32, and works just fine plugged into a Mac Mini PPC running 10.4.8 formatted as Mac OS Extended.
So, by process of elimination, the problem is either the version of OS (10.3.9), or the hardware (PPC ibook). I'm really hoping it is just the OS, because I will be upgrading once Leopard comes out. I don't see how it could be the hardware. I can copy tons of files to the drive no problem, and all of these files can be opened or copied on the Mac Mini. The drive comes with a usb connector that can plug into two usb ports for use on laptops with low power ports, and I'm utilizing this cable.
Any ideas? If I failed to disclose any piece of info that may be useful, please let me know and I'll do my best to provide it.
As an aside: I have not talked to the vendor Rocstor yet. I wanted to post to the Apple discussion boards first.
    Regards and Thanks,
    Grant

Was the machine put sleep or the lid closed while it was on before this started happening? The USB bus goes into low powered mode which confuses many third party devices. Try to see if the problem reproduces itself right after a restart but before you close the lid or let the machine fall asleep, and turn off Energy Saver's sleep functions by setting them all to Never.

  • HELP! Network printing and installing HPIJS on iBook running 10.3.9

    Hi,
I have a home network built around Time Capsule. I have a secondary router which provides a wireless B/G network.
I have an old iBook running 10.3.9 which connects to the wireless B/G network.
I used to have an old HP PSC 750 connected via USB to the time capsule but it broke so I bought a new HP Photosmart C6380 which is connected via an ethernet cable to the time capsule.
I was able to use open printing drivers to allow the iBook to print to the old printer but I cannot get it to print to the new one.
Everything else on the network can print (including my iPhone).
I went back to open printing (http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs), downloaded what I had to and tried to install it. Everything installs ok on the iBook.
The trouble is I cannot follow the setup instructions - "Printer Setup Utility (Panther), hold down the Option key, and click the Add Printer button in the Print Center toolbar. Within the setup sheet, choose Advanced from the top popup menu; then in the "Device:" popup menu select your printer by name (it should be the last item in the menu list). Finally, select the correct PPD from the model browser and click Add."
The printer shows up when I select rendezvous in the add printer section, but it cannot find the drivers and will not let me select the drivers.
When I follow the above instructions, the printer is not listed.
I have tried using IP printing (no luck), bluetooth printing (nothing), in fact everything from the pull down list.
I am sure I am missing a step somewhere. Should I first install the printer connected directly to the iBook via USB?
If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Anthony

    Hello Penny
The Leopard Installer DVD is Dual-Layered. For lack of any further information it's possible the original installed Optical Drive on your eMac can't read from Dual-Layered DVDs? Yours may be the Combo Drive instead? Although your model meets the minimum RAM requirements you would benefit greatly if you upgraded to at least 1GB - preferably more. Do you have another Mac or access to someone who has?

  • Macbooks Running Leopard - My thoughts

After watching the WWDC keynote, reviewing the material that was posted on the Apple.com, and reading concerns about the Macbooks ability in running Leopard...
It is quite obvious that the Macbook, even at its most basic configuration, will run Leopard effectively and efficiently, in fact, the Mac Mini is able to run tiger almost flawlessly and it's able to generate the various graphic effects in Tiger, therefore I doubt there will be any issues with Macbooks running Leopard.
The Macbook line is very new, only a year and ~ month old, I'm sure Apple will be able to support the Macbook line with its future OSes for many years to come. Look at the various iBooks of the past, they are still able to run Tiger and even Leopard after almost 5-6 years of use and they are only equipped with PPC processors.
    Speed?
Any new OS loves RAM, that is a fact, however, I'm sure Apple is sensible enough to accommodate those who have less RAM than others, such as those who have about 512 MB. A recommended amount for any modern OS is at least 1GB, but preferably more. However, based on past OS upgrades, Apple has been able to make OSes run faster on the SAME hardware, therefore I'm sure Leopard + Macbooks will run at least efficiently, if not flawlessly, (hopefully the latter).
    Installing the OS
Apple has in the past been able to allow users to either install the OS as an update and allow the users to keep all data, archive-install, or do a clean sweep where users can basically wipe the HD and start with a clean slate. This is up to you, however the time it takes to upgrade should not take too long, I was able to do a system OS upgrade in the past as fast as an hour or so.
    Closing Thoughts
Don't fret! The Macbooks will be able to run Leopard fine! However, if you want to speed up the experience, maybe clean out the HD, run disk utilities, and up the RAM a bit. But ultimately, the Macbook, even in its most basic of configurations is equipped to run the next-gen Mac OS and many revisions after that.

yeah, even the intel core duos can run leopard. Just not the 64 bit versions of apps, which, there arnt many AT ALL.
By the time 64 bit apps really start hitting the market, you'll probably already have a new computer.

  • Running Leopard

Will it run swell with these specs? 1.25 GB RAM, 1.2 ghz, 40GB free ibook G4. Or maybe I should just wait till I get the money to buy a MacBook. However I see that the latest basic Macbooks are no longer shipping with FW. My MOm bought a basic one a few months ago and it had FW so dont know why Apple did this.
    John

    John:
You have the horsepower to run Leopard. I would max out the RAM for best performance, and have plenty of spare Hard Disk capacity. Leopard is a disk space hog and occupies 9 GB of your drive. If you have the original HDD on the computer you should consider replacing it, as it is well past the 3 to 5 year average life and can fail at any time.
If you are considering Leopard you should also note that it does not support the Classic Environment, so if you have any apps which require Classic/OS 9 you might have to run OS 9 on separate partition.
The MacBook has had firewire, then didn't, then had it again, and now doesn't. If you are considering a new MacBook and firewire is important to you I suggest you consider the MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2009) which has FW 800.
    Good luck.

    Hello Sim085
    thanks for your reply.
Perhaps it would be easier for us to continue the programming with any kind of VisualStudio Produkt ;-), although we dont't had to think about OOP yet!
Because of our new Network-Technology (Terminal-Server) we have to discuss serveral possibilities.
I've read about JSP and ASP.NET, and I want to know if JSP or any kind of JAVA Program will run on a Terminal-Server.
Are there any special aspects I have to know when running JSP on a terminal server from Microsoft? Is it better to program applications in JAVA or in JSP? ...

  • Can a java program be run in the background?

    Hi all,
Can a java program be run in the background without the user being aware of it? I need to make a program that continuosly monitors a pc at regular intervals and runs at all time. It should be hidden(shouldn't display on the screen while running) from the user, and also, can it be run as a system file so that even if a user checks he/she would think of it as a system file?

I'm the administrator of all the computers. Then as I said there are commercial applications that do that.
Presumably you expect a problem now. And implementing an acceptable solution is going to take you months. Because not only need to 'hide' the application, you also need to set up all the monitoring and logging capability. And the first will require quite a bit of JNI work along with testing (in particular as it could interfer with existing applications on the users computers.)
    I need to
install the software in all the machines and i want
that the users who use the machine should not be able
to close the program through the task manager. If the users have admin rights then they can terminate a windows service.
And if they don't have admin rights then you can simply turn off the ability to install anything.
    I want
to know what the resources of the computers are and
that if anyone has added a resource to it or
not(attaching a flash usb thumbdrive etc). Lots of JNI.

If you can find an iPhone running iOS5 and those are the specs for iOS5, there is no reason it should not work.
If you want a more current version of iOS or a more current device, a Windows computer is always an option at significantly less cost.
