Java or Window devices

Hello all,
I am as new as new can be to Device development, so I am looking for help from all of you.
I need to find out what are the pros and cons for developing apps for handheld devices in Java over C#.
Also, if there is a software standard that is supported for the most part across most of the main handheld providers/manufacturers.
Bought the only book that looked like it may be of some help but thus far pg 41 it does not work with the example provided do to some TCP Open exception in its example code that I downloaded from Apress.com.
"Beginning J@ME Platform from novice to professional".
Christ I just want a solid step by step guide.
1. This is your environment set it up like this.
2. Here is an example. Run it and it works.
3. Here is the full API for the classes used in J2ME
4. Here is the structure your project should look like
5. These are the files you must provide and the definition of what each setting is and used for
6. HelloWorld example
7. Explanation of each line of what is going on
8. Tips on what else you might want to do real world
Please any help is appreciated. 4 days wasted thus far and am getting nowhere fast.

  • Problem opening device from Java on Windows XP

    Hi,
    I am having trouble opening the TUN device (it is a virtual network device developed by the OpenVPN project - http://openvpn.net) from Java on Windows.
    I found from the registry that the key for the device on my machine is
    {5998ABF4-70CC-4B8C-9CBF-F2B985BAD4A2}.
    From elsewhere on the web, I found that on Windows this device can be
    addressed as \\.\{5998ABF4-70CC-4B8C-9CBF-F2B985BAD4A2}.tap
    I then wrote up a short C code,
    char *tun_dev_name = "\\\\.\\{5998ABF4-70CC-4B8C-9CBF-F2B985BAD4A2}.tap";
    FILE *f = fopen(tun_dev_name, "rw");
    fclose(f);
    HANDLE h = CreateFile(tun_dev_name, GENERIC_WRITE | GENERIC_READ, 0, 0, \
    OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_SYSTEM | FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, 0);
    CloseHandle(h);In the above code, the FILE* returned is non-NULL and the HANDLE returned is positive.
    However, when I try to do the same in Java using the code below,
    String tun_dev_name =
    new String("\\\\.\\{5998ABF4-70CC-4B8C-9CBF-F2B985BAD4A2}.tap");
    RandomAccessFile raf = new RandomAccessFile(tun_dev_name, "rw");
    []/code]
    a "java.io.IOException: Invalid argument" is thrown. The same exception is thrown when I try to open either FileInputStream or FileOutputStream instead of RandomAccessFile.
    In fact, when I invoke the above C code as a native method from within Java,
    though a valid HANDLE is still returned, the FILE* returned is now NULL. I
    have tried giving all permissions to my codebase using Java's policytool, but that didn't help. BTW, I ran all this code on Windows XP from cygwin.
    Clearly this problem isn't with OpenVPN because I'm able to open the device using both fopen and CreateFile from C. Please let me know if one of you knows what the problem could be and what I need to do to fix it. In case, this is not the right forum for this question, kindly let me know which other forum I should pose this question on.
    Thanks!

    I am sorry but looks like somehow some text got missed out from my message.
    After the C code and before the Java code, I had intended to mention that when that C code is compiled and run independently, both the fopen and CreateFile calls work fine, with a non-NULL FILE* and a valid HANDLE being returned, respectively.
    And as I have already mentioned, when I invoke the C code as a native method from within Java, the CreateFile still works but the fopen fails returning NULL.
    Sorry for missing that out. Hope somebody will be able to help me out.
    Thanks!

  • Figuring out how to access a device using Windows.Devices.HumanInterfaceDevice?

    Before I start, I would like to share this link I used to access windows RT libraries from Desktop applications (only the ones stated in MSDN documentation that are accessible from desktop applications):
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/cdndevs/archive/2013/10/02/using-windows-8-winrt-apis-in-net-desktop-applications.aspx .
    After following the above instructions you can import some of the windows RT libraries in references. I have been trying to use the Windows.Devices.HumanInterfaceDevice library. I think my UsagePage and UsageId are off though. I am wondering
    if someone good in hex can translate them from my report descriptor. I already have the VID and PID (this should be enough along with the path if I called write file or some of the other win32/OS api's). Here's the code I am using in VB.NET:
    Public Class VirtualMouseDeviceOpen
    Class Enumeration
    ' Enumerate HID devices
    Public Async Function EnumerateHidDevices() As Task
    Dim vendorId As UInt32 = &HBEEF
    Dim productId As UInt32 = &HFEED
    Dim usagePage As UInt32 = &HFF
    Dim usageId As UInt32 = &H1
    ' Create a selector that gets a HID device using VID/PID and a
    ' VendorDefined usage
    Dim selector As String = HidDevice.GetDeviceSelector(usagePage, usageId, vendorId, productId)
    ' Enumerate devices using the selector
    Dim devices As Windows.Foundation.IAsyncOperation(Of Windows.Devices.Enumeration.DeviceInformationCollection) = DeviceInformation.FindAllAsync(selector)
    Dim count As Integer = devices.GetResults.Count
    If count > 0 Then
    ' Open the target HID device
    ' At this point the device is available to communicate with
    ' So we can send/receive HID reports from it or
    ' query it for control descriptions
    Dim device As HidDevice = HidDevice.FromIdAsync(devices.GetResults.ElementAt(0).Id, FileAccessMode.ReadWrite)
    Await Vendor.ReadWriteToHidDevice(device)
    Else
    ' There were no HID devices that met the selector criteria
    MsgBox("MUTT HID device not found!", MsgBoxStyle.Exclamation)
    End If
    End Function
    Class Vendor
    Public Shared Async Function ReadWriteToHidDevice(device As HidDevice) As Task
    If device IsNot Nothing Then
    ' construct a HID output report to send to the device
    Dim outReport As HidOutputReport = device.CreateOutputReport()
    ' Initialize the data buffer and fill it in
    Dim buffer As Byte() = New Byte() {10, 20, 30, 40}
    Dim dataWriter As New DataWriter()
    dataWriter.WriteBytes(buffer)
    outReport.Data = dataWriter.DetachBuffer()
    ' Send the output report asynchronously
    Dim a As Windows.Foundation.IAsyncOperation(Of UInteger) = device.SendOutputReportAsync(outReport)
    ' Sent output report successfully
    ' Now lets try read an input report
    Dim inReport As HidInputReport = device.GetInputReportAsync()
    If inReport IsNot Nothing Then
    Dim id As UInt16 = inReport.Id
    Dim bytes = New Byte(3) {}
    Dim dataReader__1 As DataReader = DataReader.FromBuffer(inReport.Data)

    End If
    Else
    MsgBox("device is NULL")
    End If
    End Function
    End Class
    End Class

    Hello to my always excellent community who always gives me the right answers. I switched my iPod Nano library from my PC to my new macbook air with the help of an excellent and courteous gentleman. The info on my Ipod and on iTunes still shows my Ipod Nano as a windows device, just want to confirm that is ok.  Next issue, which is, as usual, is prob my wrongdoing. When I locked my iPod it used to show the time of day, don't even know how I got it to do that and can't remember if it stopped doing so before or after the swith. Can anyone please advise or help? I hope Thank you and if you do reply, thank you in advance for my lack of tech terms and look at my username

    I see that there are a lot of views and no replies, so it's clearly a user issue...SHOCKER!!!
    In trying to figure out the above; I stumbled upon the link below which taught me how to change/update my iPod Nano to show Version 1.0.2. Mac rather than the windows version 1.x.xPC it was still showing after I transferred my itunes library from my old pc to my new macbook air......I didn't dowlnload the iPod updater 2006-06-28 for Mac and once I did....whoa!!! I got my calendar and reminders on my nano now it's like a new toy all over again, just follow the steps in the below article, if I can do it, a 2 year old can

  • How to develop 64-bit Windows device driver for NI-6602?

    Due to the fact that NI-VISA doesn’t support 64 bit Windows, how can I do to develop a 64 bit Windows device driver for NI 6602 (Counter/timer) PCI card. The possible jobs include:
    Develop a Windows Kernel Mode Driver (“Device Driver”);
    Make it to comply with VISA in order to utilize “osiBus Generic IO Interface” and MH DDK.
    Could anyone please give me some advices as soon as possible?

    I'm not a developer,and this is probably the wrong place to post this. It's really a small, silly thing....but I play Literati on Yahoo, and all of a sudden, across the bottom of my screen blocking the chat screen is a bar that says Java Applet Window.....how do I get rid of this???

    See my posting on the JDev Forum :-)

  • Java Applet Window showing on signed applet popups

    I have an applet deployed that is signed, but I'm experiencing a very annoying problem with JPopup windows that cross outside the border of the JFrame created by the Applet.
    Those pop-up windows still show the warning at the bottom "Java Applet Window". That part is pretty annoying and I don't understand why it's doing that since they are coming from a signed, trusted applet.
    Just to be clear, any of the JPopups or JDialogs or anything else we display inside the frame doesn't have this warning since we signed the applet.

    Our team is also using a signed applet and are having trouble with popup items not being accessible outside of the JFrame.
    In appletviewer the popup (JXDatePicker) is fully accessible. If running in Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 the portion of the popup outside of the JFrame paints correctly but cannot receive click events correctly.
    It would be preferrable that if the popup cannot receive events outside of the applet frame that the popup would be smart enough to pop itself fully in the applet frame.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

  • Using the Kobo App for reading FXL on Android and Windows devices?

    Hi, I am just finishing transferring my iPad App into a FXL ebook so I can get it out to a wider audience now that this technology is available, but I have so far only tested it on a Mac with both the iBooks and Kobo Apps. I also tested with Adobe Digital Editions, but this seems to have a bit of a bug when you use a button to click to another page the new page appears zoomed in and cropped off!
    Has anyone tested FXL on the Kobo App on a Android and/or Windows device, tablet, smartphone, laptop etc and if so does it work the same as on the OS Mac version?
    Cheers
    Gia

  • Extends.java.awt.Window

    Hi I've tried the following below (/** My Code **/) and get a compilation error: Window is not public in java.awt.Window; cannot be accessed from outside package.
    I did set the JDK1.4 path in the autoexec.bat. The API 1.4 describes Window like:
    public class Window
    extends Container
    /** My Code **/
    import java.awt.*;
    class WarningWindow extends Window
    /** With the below code everything compiles **/
    import java.awt.*;
    class WarningWindow extends Container
    /** END My Code **/
    Can someone please tell me why I get this above error and how can I manage to import the Window class.
    Thank You
    L

    Hello,
    The problem is that Window constructor is not declared as public.
    But i don't know why JDK1.4 refuse that.
    By setting "package java.awt;" you'll access all these method but that is NOT a good solution (you should use Dialog, Frame or Container).
    But there is still something strange... Why JDK1.4 refuses compiling that ??????

  • JAVA WITH WINDOWS FORM?

    Dear all,
    I have a question about java with windows form.
    I have an exe or DLL stand alone program make by visual basic 6.
    Also I have a java software build up with swing.
    Can the exe or DLL program executed inside the Java software?
    It means I click the menu and select a function in the Java software.
    And then the exe or DLL will be executed and a windows form will be pop up.
    But I want to fake like a Java jpanel not a stand alone program run outside the Java software.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks you~~

    All here,
    You can do it ... we can hep!
    Once you choose the exe you want to run, execute it via Process ... about like so:
              String theWindowsProcess =
                                  "notepad.exe";         // OR
    //                            "runtc.bat";                // OR
    //                            "cmd /C start /min /Dc:\\temp runtc.bat";
              Process myProcess = Runtime.getRuntime().exec( theWindowsProcess);BTW ... this is a very common question.

  • After downloading latest Reader software (11) on my Mac (OS10.7.5) I cannot print pdf files on either of my two printers. How do I uninstall and reinstall the software?  Adobe's instructions are only for Window devices.

    After downloading latest Reader software (11) on my Mac (OS10.7.5) I cannot print pdf files on either of my two printers. I suspect corrupt software.  How do I uninstall and reinstall the software?  Adobe's on-line instructions are only for Window devices.

    You can just drag the file to the trash. If you want you can remove  the pdf plug-in from the internet-plug in folder, but that should not be necessary to correct your problem.

  • "Java Applet Window" appears in my popup menu

    Hello
    I have added a popup menu to my applet but whenever the popup menu appears, I also get the text "Java Applet Window" at its bottom.
    What is causing this?
    Can I get rid of it?

    Yes you can add a local user policy or local system policy that grants an AWT permission that regards "Java Applet Window" more precisely permission java.awt.AWTPermission "showWindowWithoutWarningBanner";
    You can use a tool to add policy, create new policy files etc. Read about "policytool" in http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/tooldocs/tools.html
    Probably, signing tha applet jar, you can obtain necessary permission without modifing local policy. But I'm not sure.
    Stefano.

  • Unable to open a seperate java console window with javascript:window.open()

    Hi All,
    I am opening a new window using javascript:window.open() function by clicking an hyperlink in a html document. In this new windows I am trying to load an applet. Only for the first time a java console window is displayed in windows system tray . How can I open a different java console window each time I open a new window ? Basically I want to run each applet in its own JVM and it seems that each applet loaded in new window is using the same JVM and hence only one java console window is seen in my system tray.
    Please help ...
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ravi.

    Hi,
    We are currently facing this exact issue. Did you ever find a resolution?
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
