Java Applet Window showing on signed applet popups

I have an applet deployed that is signed, but I'm experiencing a very annoying problem with JPopup windows that cross outside the border of the JFrame created by the Applet.
Those pop-up windows still show the warning at the bottom "Java Applet Window". That part is pretty annoying and I don't understand why it's doing that since they are coming from a signed, trusted applet.
Just to be clear, any of the JPopups or JDialogs or anything else we display inside the frame doesn't have this warning since we signed the applet.

Our team is also using a signed applet and are having trouble with popup items not being accessible outside of the JFrame.
In appletviewer the popup (JXDatePicker) is fully accessible. If running in Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 the portion of the popup outside of the JFrame paints correctly but cannot receive click events correctly.
It would be preferrable that if the popup cannot receive events outside of the applet frame that the popup would be smart enough to pop itself fully in the applet frame.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

  • Signed Applet problems in Vista + JMF

    Hi All,
I'm new to Java Applet programming. I wrote an application which works as a VoIP Client in a webpage (Using JMF). Its working very fine in allmost all Windows XP machines.
But not in Windows Vista machines. In Vista i'm getting the following error :
"No permission to capture from applet" - Since its a Signed applet. The application is digitally signed from a CA. Even though its not working in Vista (IE and Mozilla Firefox also).
I have went through the following link which says IE in Vista will run on protected mode, so Signed Applet will not have all the permission eventhough its signed for "AllPermission".
    ----- http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/system-configurations.html
And also I'm not able to create a customized jar file for JMF using JMF Customizer. (JMF Customizer is an application which creates a jar file with specified classes). While creating a jar file I'm getting particular class is not available. (In Windows XP, this class is compilled at run time).
Please let me know the following things,
    a) Is there any security settings i have to make to run Signed Applet in Windows Vista ?
    b) What is Java Policy file? I don't have any policy file - will it affect the application ?
    c) Do I need to sign each applet (say i have 5 applets in single jar file) ?
    d) In Vista how Mozilla Firefox are running (like IE7's restricted environment or XP compatiable mode) ?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Karthikeyan R

I have exatly the same problem but not with the class itself. I have the problem with an jar that my class calls.
I use jdk1.4.2. I think it's basicaly the same problem as "lfpgMW".
I'll also whould like an idea...
    thanks

  • Cheepest certificate for signing applets

    Hello,
I just would like to make disappear the message "Java Applet Window" from my frame applets.
Is there any free certificate available for that? If not, can somebody point me to the place where I can purchase the cheepest certificate?
    Thanks for helping.

    If you're using Plug-in 1.3.1, do a:
    keytool -list -v -keystore "\Program Files\javasoft\jre\1.3.1\lib\security\cacerts"
to list all the CA certificates that get installed with the Plug-in. You probably don't want to stray from this list no matter how cheap the certificate because then you'd have to have your users import it into their cacerts file.
From this list, I only looked at VeriSign and Thawte. I believe VeriSign was US$400 and Thawte was US$200, but it's been a while.

  • Problems with Signed Applets

    Hello !
I have an applet program that displays the content of a batch file in the Applet window.
To sign the Applet I have converted the corresponding class file to a jar .
Then using keytool & jarsigner... I had signed it .
I tried to restrict the enuser form editing the contents of that batchfile's contents.
To restrict it I had Created a Policy file with only read permission allowed .
After following the above procedures , when i tried to run my applet, the applet is getting loaded sucessfully with that batch file's content .
And when i try to edit it , I'm able to edit the contents . I don't how this could be possible bcoz i have set the permission only to read it !
    Any Ideas Please !
    TIA

in the policy file, you restrict the applet to only read files. but if you have already signed it and clicked Yes on the certification screen when loading the applet, the applet gets full permission.
the other thing is that you have a textarea field or something, you must set the textarea to readonly.
if you read in a file's content and display it in a textarea, the user can change the content of the textarea, but if your applet does not write the changes back to the file, the file won't be changed, although the user has changed the textarea content.
perhaps you might post some more info on the code you are using....

  • Problem on runtime enviorment for signed applet

I am using the Java Media Framework for video capturing .Problem which i am facing is i have to configure the client machine so i wanted to download few of the class files which will execute on the client side and then stream the video back to the server .For this i have dezigned a java applet. This applet is signed by myself without any external agency so when ever the application is executed where it was signed this application gives no problem but when a different machine access the applet the user is asked for the verification of the applet but the error is thrown stating that the class not found exception .So please guide me that while making a signed applet which all packages need to be signed and what is the procedure .Do i have to sign the jmf packages also .

I have signed applets but not with jmf. Your best bet is to put the applet in a jar and sign the jar. Most java runtimes with a self signed applet will prompt the user and ask the user if they want to grant permission. You probably have to use the java html converter to code your html to force the use of suns plugin. I am not sure if you have to sign the jmf jars or they may already be signed.

  • "Java Applet Window" appears in my popup menu

    Hello
I have added a popup menu to my applet but whenever the popup menu appears, I also get the text "Java Applet Window" at its bottom.
    What is causing this?
Can I get rid of it?

    Yes you can add a local user policy or local system policy that grants an AWT permission that regards "Java Applet Window" more precisely permission java.awt.AWTPermission "showWindowWithoutWarningBanner";
You can use a tool to add policy, create new policy files etc. Read about "policytool" in http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/tooldocs/tools.html
Probably, signing tha applet jar, you can obtain necessary permission without modifing local policy. But I'm not sure.
    Stefano.

  • Realy no one knows how to remove the word "java applet window" besides sign

    Hi, everyone,
I am trying to remove the line "java applet window" from my nice/colorful interface, but what I was told is that I can not remove if i do not sign for digital singiture. Is this really a limition of Applet?
I do not know why t he design want to add this stupid feature. As most people are not technical people, they do not care whether it is applet or not. For technical people, they should know that some thing popup from the browser and have a "java" sign on the right top corner is Applet.
    Only too sad about that.

In the browser window, the address bar will also display the correct URL for the page being displayed.
An applet window could spoof this address bar and otherwise mimic the look and feel of the browser (or any other application), thus tricking the user into believing the window to be legitimate.
Just because there are already potential security/privacy issues in the applet specification, doesn't mean we want to open up another one! Why do you want an unsigned applet with a window without a warning message? You'll need a certificate anyway if you're planning on using secure communication - sending client data across an unsecure connection is rather less professional than spawning a window with a well-known and generally-ignored warning message.

  • JComboBox shows "Java Applet Window" as last element

    Hey all,
I am having a problem with using JComboBox. When I use JComboBox and show it in a JDialog (popup window), the last element of the drop down (JComboBox) is "Java Applet Window". This element is, however, not selectable. I want to get rid fo the "Java Applet Window" in my dropdown.
This problem only happens when my applet opens up a JDialog that has the JComboBox, but does not happen when I add the JComboBox directly to the applet.
I've read around in other forums that this has to do with security. I understand the need to show that a popup window (JDialog) is an applet window so the user doesn't mistake it as one of the native windows. But, the JComboBox is not a whole 'nother window, so why does it feel the needs to add that last line to designate it as a "Java Applet Window?"
    Thanks.
    Nina.

My apologies, I did not clarify myself in my question. Sorry that I created misunderstandings of the problem - as evident in the response in the previous post from himanshug.
    I am using JDK 1.3.1
I must use an applet, but all my components are standalone. They can be ran as a standalone application. But for deployment, we are using applets. It's easier to do applets so clients can access via browser than deploy a whole application installation on 50 machines halfway across the world.
And no, there is no element in my list that says "Java Applet Window". When running my application standalone, the "Java Applet Window" does not appear as the last element in my drop down.
The "Java Applet Window" also does NOT appear when I add the drop down directly to the applet. It only appears when the drop down is in a JDialog that gets launched by an applet.
My problem: How to get rid of the "Java Applet Window" as it seems something is adding this to my dropdown. And it's not my code that is adding it.
Thanks. I am also up'ing the duke dollars for a solution to this to 15.

  • Java Applet Window Warning - Appearing through

    Hello
The warning that is displayed on applet windows now when using java is causing a problem.
When you bring a fresh web page or word document over the top of the applet window, the java applet warning is still visible as if it has been brought to the front layer. but the rest of the applet is behind the new active window.
    Really weird.
    Ben.

    Thank you.

  • JFrames withous status bar with "Java Applet Window" ?

    Hello.
I call a JFrame from JApplet. All my JFrames with a status bar where string "Java Applet Window" is showing. How can I creat JFrames without that status bar?
    Thank you in advance.

This shows as a security measure because your applet isn't "signed". Your applet must be signed in order for this to not show.
Refer to the following for a how-to:
    http://java.sun.com/developer/qow/archive/167/index.jsp

  • Applet window with no warning string without signing, they did it, but how?

I've searched the forum and the web and nobody seems to be able to get an applet window with no warning string without signing the applet or changing the security policy file.
But running my applets under the Java plugin 1.3.1_03, I've observed that sometimes I get exactly such windows for tool tips or popup menus, while other times I still get the kind with the warning string. And no I am not talking about those that lies entire within another Java window so that a lightweight implementation could be used.
Seeing a warning attached to the bottom of your tool tips or popup menus is certainly annoying,
clearly Sun has been able to nail that problem, just not 100 percent.
But I've been unable to figure out how they did it, does anybody have an idea?

The bar may be annoying, but it's pretty necessary for
unsigned, unsecure appletsI understand that, however, Sun seems to be able to work around that (sometimes) for windows that host tool tips and popup menus, and I would like to find out how.

  • For save applet window in java

In my project i want to save applet window.
So please tell me how can i save and open applet window in java.
If possible than also send the source code to save applet window.
    Thanx

    in Java 6u10 it works?
I guess it's similar. My applet calls showDocument(), but it is only passing a URL with query string parameters which the page called reads (via Javascript) and uses JS to call window.open() with the contents based on those parameters. I don't have access to the system to change the way the web works. The team that does has looked into it, and said they do make the tofront call in JS to push the browser window up. But it won't go up all the way, only above other browser windows, and not the applet window (which is a JFrame). Then the OS (windows in this case) starts blinking the taskbar button for the popup window for attention, but that's not helpful.
The only common factor in the reports were that it's Java 6u10 or higher. XP, Vista, FF, IE, all had the problem with 6u10+. And knowing how Sun changed the plug-in architecture, it actually makes some sense as to why this happens. However, this seems to be something that there is no way to fix short of Sun doing something. Or as mentioned, minimize my window just to let others show up, which is going to be annoying as a user to have to restore the window to go back.

  • Signed applet doesn't popup "trust applet" dialog

    Hi,
I have the following situation with a Java applet:
It is VeriSign signed and needs access to the hard drive.
It works fine on most computers and prompts the user if they want to trust the applet.
But on some computers this trust window never appears.
The window I'm talking about is this:
    Warning - Security
The application's digital signature has been verified.
Do you want to run the application? This question just won't show up on some computers.
I know that some of them are running Vista, and I know that UAC is causing major issues (I found a site explaining the reason).
Is there anything simple that I can tell Vista users to do to give permission to the applet to run?
Is there anything at all I can tell Vista users?
    Thanks!

Dunno why Vista or XP or IE would be causing this with settings... except to not let applets run at all. The signing control is managed entirely by the plugin in any recent Java version (1.4+, at least).
Untrusted applets would have to be added to a list, if there was one, which I'm not aware of a list.
If this were an issue with default configs on Vista or XP or IE, believe me I would have heard about it all up and down the last year+. Early last year, we released a new applet which is signed, and that's how I know that 1.4.1_02 doesn't work at all. And late last year we actually started using new functionality that would take advantage of the signed applet (talking to another server) so, if that didn't work on a lot of client's PC's, I would have heard long before now.
What is the problem, actually? Is the applet running at all? If so, are you sure it's not running as a signed applet (can you test with something an unsigned applet couldn't do)? Cuz there is the "remember this decision" option so you don't have to get the warning more than once from the same signer.
