Hi everybody!
I am looking for a free library for Java for interaction with pdf-files.
My goal is to create an image-file (jpeg, bmp or gif, ...) from an exisiting pdf file, in particular from the first page, ...
Any ideas?

Anyone know of a java library that assists in creation of pdf files?

iText (lowagie.com) has been around for a while. I used it several years ago, and it seemed fairly decent then. It seems to be the de facto standard. You create PDF elements via Java code. doc.newParagraph(); paragraph.setText(), etc.
There's also FOP at apache's XML project. That hasn't been around as long, and might not be as mature, and I think there are maybe more pieces to learn, but it has the advantage that you can specify your doc's contents in XML, use XLST to transform it to XSL-FO that includes layout information, and then let the tool turn that XSL-FO doc (which is really just more XML) into PDF and several other formats.

Looking for a lightweight C++ PDF Library

I'm looking for a very simple PDF library to help me fill in forms in PDF documents, written in C or C++. I've looked at a lot number of libraries for this and am surprised it is so hard to find!
Here's some of the things I've already looked at:
poppler: is only for reading PDF not writing
libharu: seems focused on PDF creation, not manipulation of existing files
pdftk: is neat but is only a front end for iText which...
iText: is the right kind of thing, but is written in Java and C#, both of which require massive virtual machines
pypdf: has the same problem as iText- my application is written in C++/Qt and I don't want to require the download and installation of any massive runtime
A slightly different approach, these libraries could work but require me to recreate an existing pdf document in a markup of some sort:
ps2pdf
XeTeX
... etc
Redoing existing PDF documents is an option since I will be working with a limited set of templates, but I would prefer to avoid since I don't know TeX or Postscript and would have to learn, and of course redoing the templates is redundant.
Any suggestions?

Queries on The Adobe PDF Library SDK

Hi,
I have a requirement to merge multiple PDF files to single PDF on AIX 5.3 Server. This is currently done using Itext and Java. But recently we noted that Itext doesn't compress the PDF significantly. Then we tried merging the PDF with Adobe Acrobat Writer(Adobe Standard 8) manually on Desktop (windows Vista). To our surprise the Merged PDF size was less.
So we want to move on to Adobe SDK. Appreciate response on below queries:-
1) Is it possible to use PDF Library SDK to Merge multiple PDF to single one via Java program.
2) As the Program will be run in AIX 5.3 Server which is the version of PDF Library SDK I can use?
3) Can I use PDF Library SDK on server?
4) Is license required to create one target PDF from multiple source PDFs? I presume PDF Library SDK require license.
5) How much is the cost involved in purchasing it. Do i have to buy whole suite as my requirement is only PDF writer?
6) Can I get any support from Adobe for SDK related problems after the purchase of product.
7) I have downloaded, Acrobat 9 SDK. Please suggest how to proceed for finding docs on PDF writer as folder looks ambiguous.

PDF Library in a folio

I am attempting to make a PDF library within one of my folios. It is a 4 page article, with the 3 and 4th pages having links to PDF's.
Originally the PDF library was an HTML widget built for an iBook. But when I use a button to launch a Web Content overlay, there is no way to close the widget. iBooks would place its own DONE or close button over the widget to allow the user to close it and go back to the iBook. in DPS, it opens the widget, but does not give a close button. I tried creating an MSO with a close button in it, but the web content overlay hides the button, even if the close button is on the layer above it within the MSO state.
So, I am trying to rebuild the widget within ID DPS, and am about 90% there. I have an MSO with the layout of the buttons to launch the PDF's in one state, and a blank object. I can use a button to GO TO STATE 2 to display the state with all the links and a background in it, and it shows the close button that has a GO TO STATE 1 function that triggers state 1 which is blank.
So, that all works just fine. My problem is that I can't get a PDF to open from within the MSO STATE 2. I've tried a button with an OPEN FILE action, I've tried hyperlinks to the HTMLResources zip file that I've uploaded the PDF's to. The both don't work. I've tried the procedure in the DPS tips and tricks app, but I can't get the pdf to open. When previewing on the iPad, it shows an error that it can't find the URL.
Any ideas? It seems that InDesign isn't always good at updating the web content overlay links either. I'll make a change to the HTML content in dreamweaver, save it, switch to ID and relink to the same index page of the HTML content, preview it and the changes are not there.

Unfortunately, you cannot change a scan into live text using Adobe Reader. At a minimum you would need Adobe Acrobat to run what's called Optical Character Recognition.
What I've recommended to people in the past is to use the drawing markup tools to draw boxes around the text they want highlighted then play around with the fill color of the box until they get something close to what they want.

Exception thrown while processing pdf file with composite fonts using adobe pdf library (v 9.1 )

I have an issue with processing composite fonts with adobe pdf library (v 9.1 ).
While processing a pdf file having composite fonts, the pdf library is throwing an exception.
The api which throwed exception is "PDPageAcquirePDEContent()". In my code i am calling PDDocGetNumPages(), PDDocAcquirePage() before this api is called, but all those functions suceeded. In the HANDLER, using the ASGetErrorString(), i got this exception error as "The encoding (CMap) specified by a font is missing."
Now coming to the input file (which is also attached), this document have three different composite fonts ( details are given below )
Font Name : TicketBold, Bold(Embedded)
Font Type : Trueype (CID)
Encoding : Identity-H
Font Name : Times-Roman (Embedded)
Font Type : Type 1 (CID)
Encoding : Identity-H
Font Name : TimesNewRomanPSMT (embedded)
Font Type : TrueType(CID)
Encoding: Identity-H
If i convert all the composite fonts to outline using pitstop before processing, it works fine.
So my question is that whether pdf library doesnt support composite fonts (which i dont think so ) or i need to do a special handling for these kinds of fonts in my application ( which i strongly belive ). If its the latter case, please let me know how to handle it in my application.

Thanks for your reply. May i ask you which sample of the PDF Library you used to test my scenario.
One question i would like to put to you beofre going for filing a formal issue to Adobe will be does this issue has anything to do with the initialization of the pdf library?
What i meant is that when we call the PDFLInit() we pass a PDFLDataRec structure which is initialized by various path to font folders, cmap folders and unicode folders. Whether if i miss any of these folders will it cause this issue???

Page breaks in PDF library

Hi,
How can i provide a page break using PDF library? Whether Indesign CS4 does support page breaks for PDF generation. If the not the API, whether this is possible by creating a Indesign template with page breaks for the data to fit in? Also whether Adobe PDF supports page breaks? Please shed some light into this.

I Just checked through a few old documents. It appears that numbers used to export PDF files with page breaks and the last update scrapped this in favour of redicusously large one page files.
Is it really that hard to give an option as to how to export a file?

Set image path in java class library

I created a java class library project and made .jar file. My java class library contains .jpg files in separete folder named as Images. My .jar file contains list of classes and image folder also but when i am using .jar file in applet. java class library is working but images are not shown. Let me know how to create imageicon to show images also in the class library

JGSL : about java scientific library, how to use it any tutorial or etc

I have a question regarding JGSL: java scientific library.
I just download the jgsl.0.1.1 lib for my project
It contains a bunch of file, including the lib files
I set the lib folder path in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH and when i tried to run the testfile.class
that comes with this library, i got an error
main class defination not found.
Have any one used the lib if yes can send me the working example.
or at least tell me how to set these things, there is no documentation available with this.

Compatibility of PDF library on non-english OS?

We have a function in our acrobat plug-in to copy some data to the clipboard using native clipboard
methods like 'SetClipboardData'. Now, this copying works all find on a english OS, whereas fails on
a swedish OS.
The plug-in is referreing to datalogics 8.1 library.
We are also facing an issue when signing on an already signed PDF when opened on swedish OS.
Any ideas what might be the cause of failure? Or any comments on the compatibility of pdf library
with non-english OS would give us some pointers.

About the only decent java PDF viewer is Multivalent. It's a bit quirky, but does a fairly good job. Unfortunately, it doesn't currently support printing.
Adobe's java viewer is ancient, not worth wasting your time with.

Java SSF library

We are trying to use SSF ( digital signatures ) as authentication mechanism for Archive Link through HTTP Interface.ABAP code is generating PKCS#7 signed URL and we want to verify it using Java SSF library in an external system.SAP documentation talks about JAVA IAIK toolkit can be downloded from Service market place. I can't find it on service.sap.com. Does anybody know where can I download JAVA SSF from ?

The java packages where this classes and interfaces are implemented are:
- com.sap.security.api.ssf
- com.sap.security.core.server.ssf
You can find this in the jar file tc_sec_ssf.jar.

I create a jar by using java class library project option, and when i am using it in other project, it is displaying all code inside the library, i implement security inside the java library, it contains some key ...... is there any way to hide the code? or how to hide my logic when i submit it to client...
