Java Production Environment

I am trying to figure what pieces of software/components that I would need to run a java client-server application. Using a web browser accessing information from a server.
I have programmed with Java using struts in the past, but have not ever set up the environment. (We used broadvision)
It seems like with the development environment (like Tomcat) all the pieces are included, but if I don't want to use Tomcat....what can I interchange.
I figure I need the JVM.....do I need J2EE latest version? Is there a piece that can be the servlet engine seperate from the web server. It seems like all I see is a mix of the web server and the servlet engine?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for responding!
I am thinking about using Tomcat. However, business wants to have other options available.Other options are indeed available, but Tomcat is a pretty good one. Don't dismiss it out of hand.
We will probably be running in a Windows 2000 server
environment. Is IIS usually the preferred web server?Preferred by whom? I think that's a question for your sys admin. You'll want to have the Web server you're currently using to listen to the outside world forward requests to the servlet/JSP engine.
I'm not sure how the market shares of Apache and IIS break down, but I believe Apache's more common. IIS is built into Windoze servers.
Is Tomcat supported in a production environment?I'm sure you can find examples of Tomcat in production environments.
I'd ask again: supported by whom? Are you asking if there's somebody you can phone at Apache if there are problems? I don't believe so, no more than you can for any open source project. If that's what's bothering your business folks, by all means have them ante up for a license to WebLogic or something that has support.
A couple of other questions...since I don't know for> sure. I am trying to get more technically inclined.
I beleive the JVM is free and downloadable (probably
installed on most machines by default anyways). Is the
J2EE package also free? (is it the same as the J2EE
SDK 1.4).I would defer any questions about licensing to a lawyer. Have them review the licenses and explain the consequences to you.
If I am looking at this correctly, is it fare to say these are the essential components to deploying a
production java client-server application:
1) Server (i.e. Windows 2000 Server)Gotta run it on some hardware.
2) Java Virtual Machine (JVM - installed on the server)Can't run Java without it.
3) J2EE 2.4/2.0 ( installed on the server)Not essential unless you're using EJBs.
4) Servlet/JSP engine (i.e. tomcat on server)Essential if you're using servlets/JSPs.
5) ** IF needed ** Seperate Web Server (If not wanting to use Tomcat to do both)Your call. Depends on load. How many clients do you expect? Tomcat's Web server might perform well enough.
6) Client - BrowserThat's the usual lightweight UI for Web-based client/server.
You don't mention a relational database. Were you planning on having one? Which vendor?

  • Issue in production environment

    Hi,
We got an issue in the production environment on last Friday and yet not able to find out the root cause of the issue.
    Environment
    GUI : .Net
    Server : Java
    Application Server: Jboss
    Database: Sqlserver
The Java application is deployed into Jboss application server which connects to SQL server as back end. GUI makes the web service call to server for data communication
    Issue
Friday at 2 PM users reported the slowness of the application (Not getting the response from server in GUI), all the request from GUI were getting timed out.
    Restart of Jboss didn't help
Restarted the Jboss and sqlserver for the second time and than the environment became stable
    Analysis
    1. From the thread dump of Jboss log we see that there are many threads waiting on a socket for database connection(according to database team all the connections are open and available at that particular time).
    2. The size of transaction log is almost doubled during this period (when the issue was reported).
We couldn't find a reason why this issue is happened. Is it a database issue or something else? Please suggest...
    Thanks,
    Manoj

    Hi Manoj,
According to your description, when running the web application, many threads are waiting for the socket from database which cause requests from front GUI time out. Right?
In this scenario, user can access the front GUI, which means the application server is working. Since the connections are all open at that particular time, it should not be issue on your JDBC. It seems to be a deadlock issue which cause other threads
waiting and hang. I recommend check and optimize your code. On database side, I suggest you open the SQL profiler, select DeadLock Graph, it will record when deadlock occurs. Please refer to links below:

  • Error HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Javasoft\Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0_0

I have an ongoing frustrating problem. Java has stopped working on my pc. When I go to the java icon and open I get error "The system cannot find the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Javasoft\Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0_06" If I try to uninstall update 6 from xp service pack 2 add and remove programs I get the error "error applying transforms. Verify that the spedcified transform paths are valid" If I try to remove update 1, it errors "You already have this version of the Jre installed. Please uninstall the product through your add/remove programs utility before reinstalling". If I hit the OK button, I get "Fatal error during installation" (even though I am trying to uninstall)
I am very frustrated as I cannot find anything on the website to assist, and my son is going spare not being able to play runescape! Please Help
    Trompy

As a possible workaround try offline installation which can be from:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
At the same time, if the above workaround fails the exercise is little complex. If you have tried downloading update 1.5.0_xx, then likely a .msi file is saved in the location as mentioned below:
    Possible path:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre1.5.0_xx
Note: This is irrespective of installation failure or success. Replace xx with the correct version you are trying to install
There is also a bug filed where you can submit useful information to help finding regular solution to this issue:

a product and it's not a language. J2EE is a standard, based on the
language Java, but the same standard can be used in the context
of Smalltalk, Cobol, Basic or TOOL as well. We have yet to see any
development tool that actually supports full J2EE. And how many
ORB's out there are really 100% CORBA 2.0 complient and offer
full interoperability through IIOP with other CORBA 2.0 complient
    products?
The title of this entire thread is wrong. It's not Forte vs. Java, but
TOOL vs. Java or Forte vs. any Java-based ADE.
EJB, J2EE and CORBA are open standards, intended to facilitate
building large, component based applications. But they're only
standards, they're not usable products. Forte is a usable product.
It is a (propriaty) ORB, if offers lots of advanced component based
features and it uses a propriaty OO language called TOOL. Forte
was doing all this way before the world was debating CORBA, then
Java, then EJB and now J2EE.
Sure, when you really look at it, these standards are more complete
and include more design patterns than the way Forte solved the
problem, but the situation is still that, despite all those wonderfull
standards, Forte is still the product with the most advanced capa-
    bilities that actually delivers.
The challenge to Forte is to incorporate those standards within their
own product. Are they going to build 2 products, one TOOL-based
and one Java-based, or are they going to integrate TOOL and Java,
or are they going to drop TOOL? Are they going to support J2EE
and will they keep offering those wonderfull distributed features that
are currently in Forte and are not part of J2EE? Will they switch
completely to JDBC or will they integrate DBSessions with JDBC?
Will their ORB functionality remain closed or will the Forte environ-
ment become a full CORBA 2.0 complient environment? Will they
keep supporting DCOM? Will they allow JavaBeans, EJB, Forte
service objects, OLE-objects, Servlets and Active-X components
to co-exist or will that remain SF? Are they going to support Swing?
Are they going to include an HTML-Browser widget? Are they going
to, natively, support JavaScript? What about VB-script? What
about Perl-script? What about TOOL-script??? Will they include
an object-based reporting tool, so you don't have to circumvent
the application and report against the relational database? Will
this reporting tool be Java-based, TOOL-based, both, EJB-based,
CORBA-based or whatever? Will they support JPEG and PNG as
well as BMP and GIF? Will they allow you to store these images in
the repository? Will they include a full-featured web-publisher that
supports HTML and XML as well as seemlessly integrate with Forte

the repository? Will they include a full-featured web-publisher that
supports HTML and XML as well as seemlessly integrate with Forte
applications? Will they allow you to deploy your (static) web-pages
    on a web-server using E-console?

  • Production environment, error in BPELConsole

    Hi there,
I had installed, following step by step the installation guides, a production environment on three linux boxes RHE3; one for the DB v10g and in the others two an AS whit j2ee and web cache and obviously BpelPM. I do not installed WebCache AS component because an Oracle guy told me that bpel go crazy if webcache runs.
I can connect BPELConsole, but after the login I get this error message:

    Can Anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
as you know, your help was very useful.
Maybe is better to add the whole path of file that have to be changed
    (only for beginners like me)
    IRCA/integration/bpelpm/admin/sql/bpmuser.sql
This is true for DB version 10g release 2 or upper. For the previous versions the original string is enough.
    Thanks again,
    Stefano.

  • Adf security misbehaving in production environment

    Hi all,
I am using jdev 11.1.2.2 and weblogic 10.3.6
I have implemented adf security from based authentication in my web application and i have used sql authenticator for authentication.
In my integrated WLS everything works fine . but in the production WLS what is happening is when the user access a Protected Page without login it navigates to the protected page instead of navigating him to the login page. In the integrated WLS this happens normally .
Has anyone faced this issue before ? What can be wrong ?
    I have added my web.xml

    Hi Rakesh,
Make sure you have migrated the policy store to the production server. When Weblogic Server is running in production mode, automatic credential overwrite is not allowed. From the developer's guide:
When the target server is configured for production mode, you typically handle the migration task outside of JDeveloper using tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager. For details about using tools outside of JDeveloper to migrate the policy store to the domain-level in a production environment, see the Oracle Containers for J2EE Security Guide. Note that Oracle WebLogic Server running in production mode does not support the overwriting of system credentials under any circumstances.http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26098_01/web.1112/e16182/adding_security.htm#CDDGFDFH

  • Production environment, please help...

    Hi,
we have a large BC4J web based application.
we plan to put it production to allow to 40 CONCURENT USERS to connect to...
after testing the application in stand-alone OC4J. it works well, nut at some moments, the server print the message
like out of memory and it becomes realy slow. i restarted the OC4J
like java -Doc4j.userThreads=true -Xms100m -Xmx800m oc4j.jar to increase the heap and i hope that this will
    solve the problem.
no for the production environment :
    hardware
    Sun server
    4 x CPU x 450
    4 G on RAM.
    software
    Sun Solaris 8
    Oracle 9iAS R 2 (9.0.2.0.0)
so what is the good configuration for the OC4J in 9iAS to get our system support all users. should we
    use - Doc4j.userThreads=true -Xms100m -Xmx800m even whith 9iAS.
    thank you for your help.

    El Bachir,
The heap size is dependent upon your application and no. of concurrent users you are using. Yes, you can specify the the heap size for OC4J also in an Oracle9iAS instance from the EMWebsite by navigating OC4J Instance ->Server Properties -> specify the parameters for the Java command.
For details how to determine the heapsize please look at the Performancing Guide. Here is the link

    Dear all,
I wanted to understand pros and cons of choosing MS SQL Server in Java/J2EE environment.
Could anybody share some thoughts or web resources?
Personally I hate using MS SQL Server for Java/J2EE based applications. But one of my clients wanted to have following environment for his production environment and he insist on using this environment for application development. So I just wanted to understand pros and cons of J2EE (Application) + MS SQL Server ( rdbms )

  • AutoVue for Agile PQM - Java Runtime Environment Question

    Greetings,
An end user is attempting to view/open attachments within Agile Product Quality Management (PQM); we use Agile PQM 9.3.1.
When clicking on an attachment file, a pop-up screen opens with a javascript alert, prompting the user with, "Please Install Java Runtime Environment." After clicking "OK", user is redirected to java download website. User downloads and installs the update.
After rebooting the machine, we attempt to access the attachment file again within PQM and receive the same error message, "Please Install Java..."
After installing the first java update, the user is now on the following java version:
    Java Plug-in 10.55.2.14
Using JRE version 1.7.0_55-b14 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
Do we need to install the second update to be able to view attachments within Agile PQM via AutoVue?
I can't test the java updates myself because there are some legacy Oracle apps that I won't be able to support if I update my java.
    Thanks in advance,
    William

You might want to post the question to the Agile forum
The popup you see seems to be tied to Agile code itself and not AutoVue
AutoVue will work on Java 7u55
But you are running Agile, so you will need to make sure the rest of the apps are confirmed with 7u55
You also need to review Java update guidelines, by default you will be always prompted to install the latest java update

  • NullPointerException in JHSLov in Production Environment

    Hi,
I am using Jdeveloper 11.1.1.2.0 and JHeadstart 11.1.1.2.29 and I am facing the following problem:
A java.lang.NullPointerException is occured in a jhs lov only in the deployment in a production environment, despite the fact that locally the same lov works flawlessly.
Specifically, I have an updatable VO (through an entity) that has reference in another entity. The VO has access in two attributes of the referential entity and the lov is based on one of them, while the other has its returned value.
The lov is a single jhs lov based on a vo from a readonly query and is appeared in a table (being placed in a tab region). The specific lov is used and tested in the local wls without any malfunctions.
The real problem starts when I deployed the application in another wls. Following the same case as locally, when I try to access this specific lov, I get the following exception on pressing the ok button in lov pop-up:
    oracle.jbo.JboException: java.lang.NullPointerException, message=null
    at oracle.adf.model.binding.DCBindingContainer.reportException(DCBindingContainer.java:405)
    at oracle.adf.model.binding.DCBindingContainer.reportException(DCBindingContainer.java:467)
    at oracle.adf.model.binding.DCControlBinding.reportException(DCControlBinding.java:202)
    at oracle.jbo.uicli.binding.JUCtrlValueBinding.getAttributeFromRow(JUCtrlValueBinding.java:739)
    at oracle.jbo.uicli.binding.JUCtrlValueBinding.getAttribute(JUCtrlValueBinding.java:1314)
    at oracle.jheadstart.controller.jsf.bean.LovItemBean.getLovFieldValueInTable(LovItemBean.java:698)
    at sun.reflect.GeneratedMethodAccessor961.invoke(Unknown Source)
    at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:25)
You should also take into consideration that almost the same jhs lov is used in another region in the jsf page without this problem, neither locally, nor on the deployment.
Moreover, the version of the wls on which the application is deployed is *10.3.3.0* (different from the local wls of v.10.3.2.0)
This matter is of high importance to me so I am really looking forward for a reply.
    Thank you in advance

    Zelda,
To see what is going wrong, it is probably easiest to create a subclass of LovItemBean, override method getLovFieldValueInTable, and add some debugging statements.
    The method looks like this:
    public Object getLovFieldValueInTable()
    if (getLovFieldValueExpr() != null)
    return JsfUtils.getExpressionValue(getLovFieldValueExpr());
    JUCtrlValueBinding rowData =
    (JUCtrlValueBinding) getTableBean().getBindingCollectionModel().getRowData();
    String attribute = getLovFieldBinding().getAttributeDef().getName();
    Object value = rowData.getAttribute(attribute);
    return value;
So, maybe the attribute variable is null, or has an invalid value.
    Steven Davelaar,
    Jheadstart team,

  • Bring one more LDAP in production environment

    Hi All,
    I am running Sun Java Enterprise System 2004Q2 on Solaris 9 (sparc) platform. JES applications that I am using, are;
    1-Directory
    2-Messaging
    3-Calendar
I have 2 LDAPs and both are masters (1 is primary and other is failover). Now I want to bring another LDAP in the production environment. What do you suggest to make it possible without any downtime?

    UAN: 111-44-55-66
    Ext: 5793

There is no downtime required. Bascially i would suggest that you add a 3rd master into your enviroment. However depending on the exposure of the 3rd server (i.e. if it is exposed to the outside world) you could also consider a consumer since it is read-only.
Anway the procedure is thoroughly laid out in the docs.
    http://docs.sun.com/source/817-7613/replicat.html
I would suggest that you read the documentation for the full details of steps required but very briefly the outline is...
    1. Build the new server and tune it according to your environment.
    2. Enable replication on it. Choose master, hub or consumer.
    3. Create replication agreements to it from the existing masters.
    4. Perform an online initilization from the console from one of the masters or export ldif via "db2ldif -r" on one master and then import the file via "ldif2db" on this 3rd machine.
    5. Check that replication is working either by manual inspection or insync utility.
Note that depending on the load on your server(s) and network this should be done at night time or non-peak hours. The ldif export/import is recommended if you have hundred of thousands of entries or more.

  • Is standalone OC4J scalable for production environment

    Hi,
Can our team use an OC4J standalone (a cluster perhaps) to deliver Web applications on a production environment?
The Web app comprises JSPs and Servlets only at the moment, in future we are considering EJBs and other J2EE components.
Will standalone OC4J scale well and is performance good enough for real world applications?
    Thank you
    Llies Meridja

OC4J standalone is the exact same code that is packaged inside of Oracle9iAS so will have the same characteristics of Oracle9iAS. The benchmarks that Oracle markets with the ECPerf and SpecJAppServer is same thing ... so you should have no issues with performance etc.
You might have seen that we recently released a Java Edition of Oracle9iAS, which focuses primarily on the Java features rather than the extended features like Portal, Wireless etc. If you look at this URL, you will see the feature set comparison of this minimal Java version compared to the other versions:
    http://www.oracle.com/ip/deploy/ias/index.html?pkgsum.html
Further, as I understand it, as long as you license one of the Java Edition, Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition, you will be supported running the corresponding instance stand-alone instance of OC4J if you want to work outside of the out-of-the-box framework which Oracle9iAS provides for OC4J instances to run in.
    Mike.
