Java to uml

can someone recommend a free java to uml plugin
thanks
miki

JUG is no longer in development, but it does exactly what you're looking for, and it's free:

  • Enterprise JAVA with UML

    Hi all ,
I am studying enterprise java with UML.So below are the concepts i need help .
    Objective of this discussion .
    - I have study all the below but still not quite sure and even refer to few 'web site'.That is reason why i submitting this .Pls input with description in a manner of 'easy to understand' cause my english not so good.
    problem 1
The purpose of Frame work ,package ,component ,design pattern and system architecture design are for code reuse and save cost/time so
What are significant different each of above ?
What are similarity between each of above(important)?
When to use it each of above?
    Problem 2(use case)
Given case contract ,use case model ,use case interaction with external system
What are significant different each of above ?
What are similarity between it each of above?
When to use it each of above?
Given a project developing a pay roll system, how use case realization mature and what UML diagrams to involve with use case realization from inception stage to transition stage?

I won't give you answers to your problems...that is why you are taking the course.
What I can offer is suggestions. It sounds like you need to check out a good J2EE Patterns book (Core J2EE Patterns - good book), and a good UML book that addresses J2EE models. Read them and you will most likely find and understand the answers to your problems.

  • Developing Reverse Engineering Program -- JAVA to UML what needed

    Hi there,
I am wondering why people want to develop reverse engineering?? it is useful? but developing the reverse Engineering sound interesting for me.
Anyway I just intend to figure out how to develop a reverse Engineering program FROM java to UML diagram. Which create Use cases, class and sequence diagram. Is that possible??
what kinds of Knowledge I need to know in order to develop reverse Engineering. Is there any tutorial that can teach me on how the Reverse Enginneering works?
Does Reverse Enginneering check words by words in order to develop the program?
    That all...

    Hi,
You need a parser, like ANTLR, plus a java grammar for that parser (antlr has one). You need a uml model implementation like MDR, EMF or the obsolete NSUML. You need a diagramming library like GEF or JGraph. With those 3 components you could build your own r.e. tool. search google for urls.
you're interested in the subject so try to read http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/545406.html and related papers.
you'll need to understand the java language specification (java.sun.com), JSR26 (jcp.org) [a std mapping from java to uml], and the uml metamodel (download the specification from www.omg.org).
many reverse engineering scenarios are possible, although not all tools have found time to implement them.
eg. java class -> class diagram
    java method -> sequence diagram
I don't know of any tutorials. But you could look at the implementation of ArgoUml (argouml.tigris.org) and ask questions on the developer mailing list.
That should keep you busy for the rest of the year...

  • Java and UML !!!

I need some help with a university project, where i have to convert UML models in Java source code.
I have to develop a tool which takes in UML models and outputs an e-commerce application.
Are there any web-sites which have good examples of UML to java.?
I am really stuck on this so if anyone could help it would be much appreciated!
    Many Thanks.

Hi aashish24 ... thanks for your reply.
Would Rational Rose show me the actual conversion. So if I drew out a UML model into Rose, how do i go about converting it into Java, and would the tool show me the actual and whole java code for the UML model.
I also would like to know if there are any web-site which show a good conversion from UML models to Java code.
    Many Thnks for your help.

  • Java 2 UML

    Hi Everybody!
I am searching for a tool, that can convert Java Classes into UML Class Diagrams in a way that I can alter the generated diagrams in MS Viso.
    Do such tools exist?
Thanks in Advance for both your time and your knowledge! ;)
    Greetings
    Stefan

There are lots of tools that will reverse engineer Java source code into UML. Personally I use [Sparx Enterprise Architect|http://www.sparxsystems.com/products/index.html], it is capabable and modestly priced. You can modify the diagrams and regenerate the code e.g. round trip engineering. EA can also export UML diagrams as images that you can import into Visio, though I'm at a loss to understand why you would want to do this.

  • Java to UML tool - need some advice

    Hi there,
I'm developing a UML case tool as part of my final year project for my BSc degree in Computer Science, the aim of this tool is to covert Java source code into a UML Class diagram.
When given a directory containing the current project files (*.java files), the system is then intended to analyse the source files in that directory and draw a UML Class diagram which shows the Inheritance and Associations.
Just to mention, I have so far managed to get the source code analysis done using a Doclet (via JavaDoc) and I can get the methods, variables etc for each class. These have been stored in relevant data structures.
Hoever, the most difficult part is the actual layout and construction of the class diagram and I would apprecaite any advice or assistance anyone is willing to provide..
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards
    Tony

Well automatic layouting will be a tough task to cover - as even experienced modelers do have problems in arranging the classes correctly.
I think having a closer look at graph-theory and public implementations of layout algorithms for electronic boards may be a good idea.
Maybe I should get more a little more specific here ;-)
When doing a manual layout, I usually tend to put the root class of an inheritance tree to the top of the diagram and classes that have the most dependencies to the center of it.
Have you thought of patitioning the diagram automatically?
Sometimes you find classes that act as a Facade (cf. Design Patterns, Gamma et al.) to a group of related classes which can be easily put into a sub-diagram. You may open this sub-diagram by double clicking on the Facade class.
Hope this helps a little bit :)))

  • JAVA TV UML  REQUIREMENTS

iam doing requirements elicitaion as part of my project what are the main classes that can be modelled by using UML in order to implement java tv as part of requirements elicitation?

Maybe I'm missing something or don't understand it.
Since Raspberry Pi uses ARM6, to install SE Embedded 8 for Raspberry Pi  don't I have to use  "ARMv6/7 Linux - VFP, SoftFP ABI, Little Endian" ?  I don't see hard-float version for ARM 6 unless I look at version SE Embedded 7.
When I've created custom JRE initially, it wouldn't work on Raspbian wheezy armhf (hard-float).  Until I found requirements from given instructions.
Getting Started with Java SE Embedded on the Raspberry Pi
Download the Debian Squeeze Linux Image for the Raspberry Pi
NOTE: These instructions are for Debian Squeeze. Other Linux implementations for the Raspberry Pi might work, but they must have been built for the ARM chip's software floating point.
As soon as I reinstalled Raspberry with Dabian Squeeze (debian armel which uses software floating point and the "soft float" ABI), exact same created JRE would work fine.
But Java ME Embedded wouldn't work anymore, on this version.
Can anyone explain which version of Java SE Embedded 8, ME Embedded 8 and Linux implementations to use together? Very confusing for a first timer.
    Thanks

  • Java 2 UML Use Case Diagrams

I am stuck at Use Case Diagrams generator, which takes Problem Statement or Requirement in english and generated Use Case Diagrams from it.
I am successful at finding and seperating Parts of Speech from English sentances using PoS Taggers.
    how can i model them?
are there any tips/open source programs available.

learn English so the software understands you.

  • UML diagrams for Java petstore example

    Hi,
In this forum and elsewhere I've notice requests for the UML diagrams for the java petstore example. I've posted some uml diagrams at
    http://weblog.neeraj.name/weblog/2004/9/9/java-petstore-uml-diagrams.html
    Your comments are welcome.
    thanks.
    - Neeraj
    http://weblog.neeraj.name

    Hi,
I browsed through some of your UML. Its a great start! Would you be interested in starting a project on java.net and hosting your uml there? We now have the BluePrints projects out on java.net https://blueprints.dev.java.net/ and would like to encourage others to add their projects as well.
Lots of people have done cool stuff with Java Petstore and other blueprints projects, and lots of people have created additions to these projects. These UML diagrams would seem to be a great addition to the J2EE community on java.net http://community.java.net/java-enterprise/.
Its easy to join java.net and to create a new project. They give you a cvs repository where you can store your uml diagrams. We could include a reference to it from the blueprints since it is really useful supplemental material. By making it a project as part of the J2EE community on java.net it makesd it accessible to a larger audience of people. Not everyone will read this forum, and lots more people might find your project useful. So if you wish we had more UML for the Petstore, ....then now is your chance to make a difference :-) Maybe a project called UML4Petstore?
This page has some explanations of how to add a project if interested.
    https://java-enterprise.dev.java.net/
    hope that helps,
    Sean

  • UML,Java and Access

Hello Good morning. Maybe this message has not a lot to do at all with Java. Iam doing a program in Java using UML(both OO).Wouldn't be a contradiction to use MS Access as "DataBase" since Java and UML are Object Oriented?.
    Thanks.
    CELH.

You are quite right. Thus, I wonder about it because it's strange mixing Object Oriented programming and modeling with a relational DataBase. Maybe a Object Oriented DataBase will suit it better, but then again, you are right: There a few known Object Oriented DataBase.
    Thanks.

  • Java Source Code to UML Class Diagram

Can anyone tell me exactly which kinds of relationships may be identified for a UML CLass diagram, directly from 'static' source code..
Note that I am developing my own case tool which will convert from java to uml..
At the moment, I have only managed to get Inheritance and Association relationships..
Where Association is identified by looking at the types of all variables belonging to a class (excluding method variables etc) and if the type of the variable is non-primitive, than I have deduced it is an association relationship with that class.
Would this be the right approach?
Secondly I have noticed in JBuilder, it models dependency relationships by getting all the Imports at the top of the java source file, is this right?? also I have read that a dependency can be modelled by the variable types in operation arguments (paremeterS ?)..
I would also appreciate if someone could clarify the difference betweeen Composition and Aggregation for me and explain if it is possible to identify the two relationships directly from java source code..
Last but not least, what about multiplicity ? am I right in thinking that an instance variable is 0-1, an array declaration is seen as 0-n (fixed number) and a Vector/ data collection.. is seen as 0 - * (any number)..
    Thanks for any help,
    Regards
    Tony.

although this post is way old it could do with a decent answer.
some guidance can be taken from JSR26: UML Mapping for EJB
    find it a www.jcp.org
also this research paper on consistency of reverse engineering between uml tools
    http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/545406.html
Where Association is identified by looking at the types of all variables belonging >to a class (excluding method variables etc) and if the type of the variable is >non-primitive, than I have deduced it is an association relationship with that >class.
Would this be the right approach?Yes. You could also say that if it is a java.* type then it would also be an attribute.
Secondly I have noticed in JBuilder, it models dependency relationships by getting >all the Imports at the top of the java source file, is this right?? also I have >read that a dependency can be modelled by the variable types in operation >arguments (paremeterS ?)..JBuilder would be consistent with JSR26, and that's how i intend to implement in ArgoUml.
I would also appreciate if someone could clarify the difference betweeen >Composition and Aggregation for me and explain if it is possible to identify the >two relationships directly from java source code..Composition is a stronger form of ownership. the composed class is owned only by 1 class. Its lifetime is strongly linked to its owner - ie. it is not created before its owner and it is destroyed before its owner is.
    eg. leg of a table.
Agregation is weak ownership. the owned class may be owned by several classes.
eg. a company is owned by many shareholders.
Last but not least, what about multiplicity ? am I right in thinking that an >instance variable is 0-1, an array declaration is seen as 0-n (fixed number) and a >Vector/ data collection.. is seen as 0 - * (any number)..sound right.

  • UML code synchronization unwanted

I have an existing application that I would like to reverse engineer into a UML (or Java) diagram. I want to then "disconnect" the model from the source code, so that I can try different designs in the model. Is there a way to turn off the code synchronization?
I've tried copying the files to a new workspace but that has technical and procedural problems (in my workplace).
    Thanks

If you drag your source code onto a Java diagram and then select all your diagram elements and then choose from the main menu 'Model | Transform | New Diagram' and then select 'Java to UML' in the Transformation dialog. Your java classes will be converted to UML classes. You can then use the UML Classes to try the different designs without affecting your Java Classes.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • Java Interview questions!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi folks,
I had an interview with a small company a few days ago.
Below is a list of the questions that they asked me.
Some of these are not familiar to me at all.
Does anyone have the answer for these?
    (1) Draw UML diagrams that express the following concepts:
    (a) Class C and class B are subclasses of class A.
    (b) Class P has two private fields int x and int y and one
    public method setXY(int x1, int y1)
    (c) bob is and object of class Bob.
    (d) Class A objects contain one or more objects of class B.
    (e) Interface A is implemented by class B and class C.
    (2) Define the following computer science terms:
    (a) Primitive type
    (b) type conversion
    (c) narrowing / widening a type.
    (d) reference type
    (e) type casting
    (3) (a) Give an example of variable shadowing.
    (b) (2pts) Explain the difference between method hiding and
    overriding methods.
    (c) Give an example of marker interface.
    (d) Suppose class A implements two interfaces C and D. Each of these
has a method public void getRichQuick() but C's method
throws CaughtBySECException and D's method throws
AntitrustException. What will the compiler do?
    (4) (a) With respect to subclassing what does restriction mean?
    (b) How do we implement restriction in Java?
    (c) Suppose we have two interfaces in Java: I2 which extends
I1. Is I2[] a subtype of Object[] ? Why or why
    not?
    (d) What is multiple inheritance?
    (e) Give a way to achieve the effect of multiple inheritance in Java.
    (5) (a) In a Java class definition what is an initialization. Give an
    example.
    (b) Give the order in which the following three things would be
initialized when a subclass B of class A is created:
    (i) an explicit initializer in B, (ii) an explicit initializer
in A, and (iii) an initalization statement in a constructor of A.
    (6) (a) On what methods and classes should one use /** ... */ comments?
    (b) For javadoc to detect these comments where relative to these
    methods/classes should the comment occur?
    (c) Explain how to use each of the following javadoc tags:
    (i) @since (ii) @see (iii) @param
    (7) Define the following terms with respect to their object-orientation
meaning. Give an example of (b) and (c).
    (a) framework
    (b) idiom
    (c) design pattern
    (8) Give each of the things needed for the canonical form for public classes
    in Java.
    (9) Class A and Class B each contain identical blocks of code 30 lines long.
Class A extends Class C and Class B extends Class D. Suggest a way to
avoid the code duplication using factorization. What kind of
    factorization did you use?
    (10) Give the UML diagrams for the folowing design patterns:
    (a) Strategy
    (b) Iterator
    (c) Factory
    (d) Template
    (e) Singleton

I think I can help you with a few points:
    2
    a. Primitive types are byte, short, char, int, long, float, double and boolean. They tell the compiler the type of the variable and thus how much memory needs to be set aside to store the variable in memory.
    b. Converting from one type to another which kinda links in with c. Widenening is the process of changing, for example and byte to an int (no explicit cast is needed) because a byte (8 bits) can fit into an int (32 bits).
However the reverse is not true (obviously) so an explivit cast is needed to tell the compiler that you meant to do it (as information can be lost).
    e.g. int i = 3000;
    byte b = (byte)i;
obviously a byte can only hold values up to 127 so converting this int to a byte changes the value. You have to look at the bits and understand a bit of binary code for this.
This kinda answers part e. too.
    d. A reference type is a pointer to a cariable or object (I think thats what its getting at). eg int i = 32; i is a reference to the memory address where the computer stored the value 32.
4d.e Multiple inheritance is when a subclass inherits from more than one base class. In java this is not possible (java only supports single inheritance with the extends keyword). However, java overcomes this with interfaces as a class, although it can only extends one base class, can implement as many interfaces as it likes in a comma seperated list.
I hope this helps you on your way. The fact of the matter is, the majority of your questions can be found in any decent book on java (and UML). Also look at the java tutorial online.
For example 1a is simply a box with two other boxes beneath with arrows pointing upwards to the base class (not downwards as would seem reasonable).
The best way to learn all this stuff is to read it then try it yourself! That way you'll remember it much better.
    Good luck

  • Java exp.

I have a general know. of different API's of java and mostly my experience has been writing web based applications using Coldfusion & HTML. I do not have much exp. in App Dev in java but I am learning it. I would like to know apart from Java, what else do i need to know to become a app. developer ( not including database stuff) in java like UML, object modelling tools, etc. any thots are appreciated

need to know to become a app. developer ( not
including database stuff) in java like UML, object
modelling tools, etc. any thots are appreciatedI'll get blasted for this no doubt, but in my estimation the best education is practice and empirical results for yourself. I've sat through and led scores of UML diagraming and object modelling meetings. Call me a bad architect, but these sessions can only give you greif, with or without OO understanding. Get your OO understanding by coding and modelling by hand, /completely/ remove yourself from thinking in procedural or functional terms, think in terms of interfaces themselves and NOT in terms of the implementations (yet).
OO ain't the only way, nor is it always the best. I wish I would have /started/ with OO instead of FORTRAN/C as it takes a while to dissassociate oneself.
Companies don't like this approach, the manual, XP get-it-done value-driven type development approach, they like UML diagrams and loads of specifications that aren't specs but rather requirements in their PHB minds. Enough out of me, but just expirement with OO questions brought up on these boards...

  • Creating java code from a class diagram in JDeveloper

I have created a class diagram in JDeveloper 11.1.1.3.0. When I generated java code from the class diagram by right clicking on the class diagram->transform->same diagram->UML to Java, a .java file is generated with attributes and getters/setters, and also a .uml_cla file is generated. What is this .uml_cla file exactly and what is it used for? Also I have a package.uml_pck file that was created 3 times. I have a package of com.xxx.xxxx, and it put this package.uml_pck file in "com", in "xxx", and in "xxxx". Do I need to retain all 3 of these files in my project?
One more question related to this. When I change something in the java representation of the class diagram (i.e. a datatype), it updates the .java file that was generated from the class diagram, and it also works the other way...change the .java file and the java representation of the class diagram changes. However, the class diagram that the code was generated from does not change, nor does the mysterious .uml_cla file I asked about in the above paragraph.

This did work for me, with an exception. I have put the .java files generated from the class diagram in a different package from the .class_diagram file, the package.uml_pck file, and the .uml_cla file to keep the actual source code separate. When I modified the .java file and transformed the class diagram from java to UML, it created the package.uml_pck file and the .uml_cla files again in the same package as the .java file, and they show the update. The package.uml_pck file, and the .uml_cla file that were originally created and are in the separate package from the .java files were untouched, thus the class diagram displayed does not reflect the change either. Does this mean I should not, or cannot, separate these files, and that they all must be left in the same package? (the purpose of separating it in the first place was for ease of deployment since we don't want to deploy any of the class diagram files) Thanks!
