Java versions on Mac OS-X

I'm curious about the layout of various Java versions on Mac OS-X 10.6, and what happens if one installs JDK 1.5 on a Mac OS-X 10.6 ...
This is what currently exists on this new MacBook Pro machine:
ls -al /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/
total 48
drwxr-xr-x  11 root  wheel  374 Aug 14 13:53 .
drwxr-xr-x  12 root  wheel  408 Nov 11 09:19 ..
lrwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel    5 Aug 14 13:52 1.3 -> 1.3.1
drwxr-xr-x   3 root  wheel  102 Jul 20 16:35 1.3.1
lrwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel   10 Aug 14 13:52 1.5 -> CurrentJDK
lrwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel   10 Aug 14 13:52 1.5.0 -> CurrentJDK
lrwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel    5 Aug 14 13:52 1.6 -> 1.6.0
drwxr-xr-x   8 root  wheel  272 Nov 11 09:19 1.6.0
drwxr-xr-x   9 root  wheel  306 Nov 11 09:19 A

lrwxr-xr-x   1 root  wheel    3 Aug 14 13:52 CurrentJDK -> 1.6

Just checking, CuriousMind ... did you intend to post in this particular forum? (This is the Safari for Windows forum, so Mac folks with the knowledge to help you may not necessarily see your post here ...)

    Since August 2012 updates for Java (and especially Java Runtime Environment, which is what you actually need) must now be downloaded direct from Oracle:

    (which is for Java 7)

    The recently discovered zero-day flaw in Java 7 is so serious that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has warned users to disable or uninstall it, and Apple has disabled the Java 7 plugin on Macs through its OS X anti-malware system, in order to protect users from a potentially serious security issue.
    You should disable Java (if not already done) until either the US Department of Homeland Security, or Oracle, declare it safe and Apple restore the facility. Oracle have released an update said to fix the security flaw, available from here:

    Javascript should not be disabled (it has nothing to do with Java).

    Yes. Always keep the default settings unless you have a specific reason not to.
    If you are a heavy user of Java programs or applets, you may need to clear the cache files after Java updates because the old caches may interfere.

  • Java version 7 update 9 update was installed, Computer Mac  version 10.7.5 will not recognise the download.  Please advise .  Is there another link for a download that will work.

    I downloaded the Java update version 7 update 9 as advised by computer - but the computer does not recognize the download - as instructed I  pressed Command R and also tried Command Q
    I downloaded the update twice - still the computer does not recognise the download.
    In my serarch on the web there seems to be issues in this download.
    I think there is an new patch  ,  Not sure where to find this that is relevant to my computer.
    Be grateful if someone could send me a link and instructions on the relevant choice for my computer.
    Also Do I need to uninstall old Java downloads.  if yes Please advisee how I should do this.
    Be grateful if you could send me a link that will allow the updated Java to be recogized by my computer Mac Version 10.7.5
    thank you

    I have downloaded the latest Java  (JRE)  and Java is checked enabled as well as  JavaScipt and Web plug-ins are enabled.
    I thought I would download once again  from your link - MacOSX jre7u6 Macosx-x64 dmg.
    On opening the package to install was advised that a higher version of the JRE is already installed on the system.
    Still unable to open my Labs software as the advice is still to download the latest Java.
    Checking the net again found another Java option for Mac Lion - so I downloaded and installed the version OS X2012 -006.
    Still no joy,  as my photo Lab software keeps givng me the same message that i to open " RGB Digital Direct" I need to download the Java Runtime Environment for Web Start Application.
    I  then went back into Java Website and it gave an option to detect whether I have the correct Java Software - report came back - Verified Java Version - " Congratulations You have the recommended Java installed ( Version 7 Update 9)"
    BE grateful of your expert advice.

    This is a User-to-User forum.  We do not have any knowledge into what Apple will or will not do.
    However, based on past history, it is unlikely Apple will invest anything except critical security updates into Mac OS X 10.5.  I could be wrong.
    If you really REALLY need Java 1.6 on your Mac, you should consider upgrading to a newer version of Mac OS X.

    Can I load an old version of java on a macbook pro? The version I need to use is 1.6.0_23
    thank you

    Apple blocks old Java versions because of serious security issues, so you won't be able to install that Java version on your Mac. You can only install the latest Java 6 version or, if you have OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion, Java 7

    Can you please help me. This has never been a problem before...(it started when Java had a lot of problem)

    To see if Java is installed (that is, if you haven't disabled it in Java Preferences.app) enter into Terminal in Utilities and hit return.
    java -version
    If you use Safari, Apple has disabled Java 6 from there. Probably also Firefox and Chrome.

  • Running a Java Applet on Mac OS browser

    I'm having trouble getting my Java Applet to work properly on the Mac OS version of IE5. Basicaly, the app fails to appear. Are there any do's and don'ts regarding the running of Java Applets on Mac Browsers?
    I read somewhere that you can't send parameters through to the Applet. Is that true? I'm not trying to do this and it's still doesn't work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    If anyone can help me with this problem I would be greatful.

  • JAVA 7 on Mac OS X 10.5.8?!

    I can't open any java file, it says "the .jar file could not be launched check the console for possible error messages". My macbook is running on 10.5.8, any versions of JAVA that works on this version?

    Hi, Java 7 is out for 10.5.8
    Locate the version of Java that’s installed on your Mac OS X system.
    1. Open the Utilities folder and run the Terminal application.
    2. Type java -version and press Enter.
    (space between java & -v important)
    The version of Java that you have installed will then be displayed on the screen.

    If you can run it under chrome, you have java installed.
    There was some malware that exploited an older version of Java (not javascript) running in a Browser. Since few people use it Apple turned off Java by default in the Safari Browser.
    If you need it for something, just turn it back on in Safari preferences (inside Safari). After a few months of non-use, you may find it has turned itself off again.

  • My Applet start failed due to security warning after upgrading java version

    Hi Team,
    We have an application where we read the weight from the attached weighing Scale (Hardware device).
    For this we use one Applet which runs and reads the data.
    Now we upgraded the Java version from 1.6 to 1.7 and started encountering a security alert 'Running unsigned applications like this will be blocked in a future release because it is potentially unsafe and a security risk'.
    Our application runs on a HTP port not on HTTPS because this is installed in client premise and no risk in opening HTTP port internally.
    Could you please help us in resolving the issue. We don't want to see the alert even after upgrading the Java version.
    Thanks,
    Vijay G
