Java Webstart Database applications

Hello all
Is it possible to write a webstart application that downloads to a remote client and accesses a database on a server via an internet connection? Would the client need JDBC drivers installed? Can these be packaged in the webstart application download? What are the security issues involved?
If anyone could point me to a good website about this then that would be great!
Chris

Most of database does not let you accessing them by a computer other than localhost.
We are using Servlet to extract the necessary information from the database and to send it (zipped) to the Java Web Start client. The network communication is then very limited.
That is probably the more efficient and reliable than to access the db directly by the client.

Benoit

  • Deployment issues-java desktop database application

    hello,
    i'm vasant...recently visited an online tutorial for creating java desktop database application
    here is the URL [http://www.netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/gui-db.html#running-outside-IDE] ...
    everything works fine...when building and executing the application from within the NetBeans IDE..6.7
    but as instructed in that tutorial...when I tried to run the .jar file after exiting the netbeans IDE, it didnt run...
    infact direction has been given in that tutorial for this in the last section....which says that i've to start Java DB from outside the Netbeans IDE...that's where difficulty arises....
    i've no idea how to start Java DB manually...
    i'd really appreciate if nybody der could...help me out plz
    thanx

    but i think...my estion is fairly simple and straight forward...and i've provided every detail of my problem(if uv'e read my opening post of this thread)....
    and as far as that link goes...i've already checked it b4 u guys mentioned it... as it is provided right there in the tutorial i've provided link of...
    and i've tried my options b4 making use of this forum...and i didnt find a solution that's why i'm taking ur help..
    nevertheless...i repeat my question...
    there's a tutorial at this link...[http://www.netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/gui-db.html]...in it is described how to create a java desktop database applicaiton...
    at the end of the tuorial there is a section called: "Building and Deploying the Application"
    in that section they have instructed to exit netbeans IDE and try and run the application outside it...which is not happening
    the reason they say is that i've to start Java DB from outside of the IDE...that is wat my problem is ..
    i dont know how to start Java DB from outside the Netbeans ide...You are not telling us anything.
    If I tell you "my automobile doesn't work" how do you know what is wrong. Instead I need to tell you one of the following.
    1. The engine didn't start.
    2. The wheel fell off.
    3. The engine caught fire.
    4. When I went to the driveway the car wasn't even there.
    When you "run" something then something happens. When I run notepad from a console window if notepad is not in the path then I will get an error about command not found. if it is in the path then the command executes and notepad pops up. Even if I don't see notepad pop up I know that the command seemed to execute from the command window.
    The above are examples of describing what you did and what did happen. In detail.
    "It doesn't work" provides neither detail about how you ran it nor what did happen when you did attempt to run it.

  • Simple java/mysql database application question about triggers

    I am planning a new database application using java and mysql. I may want to use some triggers to automatically update the tables when a change is made. my question is this: If I write the trigger, and I use Java to modify the database, will java automatically pause and let the trigger finish doing its task before it continues? what if it writes more to the table before the trigger is finished modifying the table? how do I get java to pause and let the trigger finish?
    thanks for your response

    It doesn't have anything to do with java at that point.
    When you execute, for example, an insert statement, then the database executes that statement. The database (not java, not the driver) decides with that statement is complete. Control returns to java when the database decides that execution is complete.
    And except for tricks that one might do (or attempt to do) via SQL or triggers then when the statement execution finishes then everthing has completed running.

  • Simple Java ME Database Application Question -JSR-169

    Howdy,
    Using Netbeans to make a simple DB app using Derby's EmbeddedSimpleDataSource, show here:
    [http://wiki.apache.org/db-derby/JavaMESupport]
    I'm almost there except for adding the JSR-169 jar file. Apparently you cant just add the folder to the class path. I don't quite understand why they say the JSR-169 jar file needs to be built? I tried adding the classes to the project - no dice. Tried adding the folder to the class path, which usually works, but still no dice.
    Is there a link or anyplace that the JSR-169 jar file can be downloaded? I/m on windows - to be honest I am not sure how to make that file. Forums show a lot of people having trouble trying to make it.

    If you follow the steps from the above link, you should not get any Security Exception. Please note that Derby folks say that you should add jdbc.jar (or jsr169.jar) to your boot class path, not to your class path. This is exactly what needs to be done to avoid the Security Exception. Alternatively you can add the jar to the extension directory (e.g. /lib/jclFoundation11/ext if you use j9 foundation 1.1).

  • Web database application design examples wanted

    Hi! Ive written a couple of smaller web database applications in Java but Im not completely satisfied with my design, especially where and how to put the database code. Now Im looking for small open source examples of good design of web database applications in Java. I would appreciate if you could direct me to a good example application, preferably easy to understand. Also feel free to mention any other resource that you think I should look at. At the moment I dont have the time to read a complete book but I plan to do this later so book recommendations for professional Java developer are also very welcome.
    Summary of recommendations I would like to get:
    1) Java web database application with good design
    2) Design book for professional Java developers
    3) Any other design related resource
    Thanks!

  • Java Webstart application problem with TLS certificate revocation checks (Java 1.7.0_76)

    We have a problem with our Java Web Start Application regarding the TLS certificate revocation check:
    The application is running on a server within a wide area network which is separated from the internet.
    The application users have access to the WAN, and also access to the internet over some corporate proxy/firewall.
    The user has to enter, for example "https://my-site.de/myapp/ma.jnlp" within a webbrowser or could also call  "javaws https://my-site.de/myapp/ma.jnlp" to start the application client.
    The webserver has a certificate from a trusted certificate authority. This certificate seems to be ok, the browser is even configured to perform OCSP status check.
    The application files are signed with a certificate from another trusted certificate authority. This certificate seems also to be ok. Regarding this certificate there
    are no problems with certificate revocation checks.
    The problem is, while starting the application client there is a message box which tell us something like "the connection to this website ist not trustworthy",
    "Website: https://my-site.de:80", and something about an invalid certificate, meaning the webserver certificate.
    Obviously the jvm runtime, which is executed on the users workstation, tries to perform a revocation check for the webservers certificate, but this fails because
    it cannot fetch the certificate under https://my-site.de:80.
    The application will execute without further problems after that message but the users are very concerned about the "invalid" certificate, so here are my questions:
    - Why is the application trying to get the webserver certificate over Port 80. Our application developers told me, there is no corresponding statement. Calling this address
      has to fail while "https://my-site.de:443" or "https://my-site.de" would not have a problem.
    - Is there a way to make the application go on without performing a tls revocation check? I mean, by adjusting the application sourcecode and not by configuring the users Java Control Panel.
      While disabling the TLS Certificate Revocation check in the Java Control Panel, the Webstart Application executes without a warning message, but this is not a workable solution for
      our users.
    It would be great if someone can help me with a hint so i can send our developers into the right direction;-)
    Many thanks!

  • Java dictionary database table in web dynpro application

    Hi,
    I want to access java dictionary database table in my web dynpro application in java.
    Right now I have created one java dictionary DC.
    and in that Dc i have created two database table .
    Now I want to use this table in my web dynpro application.
    Can anyone help me.

    You can use the Dictionary Projects to create tables in Database. You must use codes to access these database tables that is created using Dictionary projects.
    You have to use the DataSource in order to get connection ; Use Visual Administrator to see the data source name.
    You can use the following code to access the database table.
    ResultSet result = null;
    try
         InitialContext initialcontext = new InitialContext();
         DataSource datasource = (DataSource)initialcontext.lookup("jdbc/<DataSourceName>");
            Connection connection = datasource.getConnection();
         Statement statement = connection.createStatement();
         result = statement.executeQuery( <Query>);
         connection.close();
    } catch (NamingException e) {
         // TODO Auto-generated catch block
              e.printStackTrace();
    } catch (SQLException e) {

  • How to launch a Java WebStart application with older JREs when Java 7u25 is on the client?

    How can I launch older versions of my Java WebStart application, that are built and run with Java 7u21 or earlier, even if Java 7u25 is installed locally on the client? Application launch and behaviour must be reliable and consistent.
    Background:
    As of 7u25 (and later), Java Webstart applications launch with a different class loader than pre-7u25.
    My Java Webstart application has supported versions that were built with older versions of the JDK (e.g. Java 5, 6, 7u21 or earlier). These applications run with their required JRE version, enforced through JNLP. Once Java 7u25 is installed locally, these older applications fail to launch, due to classloader differences.
    The question is: what is required to run older Java WebStart applications even if 7u25 (or later) Java Webstart is installed locally on the client?

    I confirm your findings when using shortcuts to try specific versions of JavaWS with 7u25 or later installed:
    JRE 5u14 launched and the classloader was as pre 7u25
    JRE 6u43 would not launch
    JRE 7u21 launched but the classloader was not as pre 7u25
    You can launch the shortcut with the JavaWS -verbose option to display a messagebox with valuable information.
    I am keeping a close watch on this thread.

  • Java WebStart application fails to load when cache is disabled.

    We have a problem with our application when using the latest version of Java (Update 20). We a lanching a jnlp file using Java WebStart.
    Until to the early release Update 21 b05, we had the following exception:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
         at java.util.jar.JarVerifier.mapSignersToCodeSource(Unknown Source)
         at java.util.jar.JarVerifier.mapSignersToCodeSources(Unknown Source)

    Which was fixed with the following bug resolution: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6943522
    Now with that latest version that initial problem got resolved, but a new one appeared. The problem described below, only appears when the "Java Cache"
    of the control panel is disabled. We tested all the following scenarios:
    - Cached data cleaned / Cache enabled: Works
    - Cached data / Cache enabled: Works
    - Cached data cleaned / Cache disabled -> Exception
    - Cached data / Cache disabled -> Exception
    * We have already check the signature of the resource manually and it is correctly signed.
    * We have checked the jnlp with JaNeLA, and it's good.
    * No matter what we change, every time Java Cache is disabled, we get the exception.
    The exception thrown is the following:

    Can someone give any light on this issue?
    For me it look very clearly like another bug related the first fix, but I wanted to pop the question here first.
    For now we are recommending our customers, to keep with Java Update 18 (Last working version),
    but it's becoming a bigger issue, since more and more customers are trying to update to the latest version.
    Regards.

    There were some recent (last month or three) reports of broken cache management, but AFAIR they were supposed to be fixed by update _20. Try update _21, and if that does not resolve the issue, raise a bug report with Sun.

  • I need to sign a java webstart application but Im no coder

    Hi
    I have a java webstart application that was writen for me by a coder that I can no longer contact. I was given all the souce code for the application including an unsigned jar file. What I would like to know is how do I go about getting the application signed by a trusted authority so that the people who use the app for the first time dont get the big ugly warnings. I have no java programing experience at all so any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards

    Please note that users will still get a message, because signing does not infer trust, it only establishes identity.

  • Jre-6u22 and greater breaks java webstart 1.4.2_11 application

    I have a java web start application that actually worked in jre-6u18, but but definitely breaks with the jre-6u24 and I suspect any other jre greater than jre-6u21. The reason I suspect this is because a buddy of mine also experienced a similar issue and determined the breakage for him was between jre-6u21 and jre6-u22. I have tested in pristine environments and found breakage between jre-6u18 and jre-6u24 only because I do not presently have any of the versions in between to test.
    Here are the details:
    The JNLP file is configured to autodownload <j2se version="1.4.2_11*" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se" initial-heap-size="64m" max-heap-size="256m"/>
    The launch attempt successfully downloads and installs this JRE in both 6u21 and 6u24.
    It has been re-written from spec="1.0" to spec="1.5" and when I try to run it directly with the 1.4.2/javaws/javaws.exe it breaks with error stating that it is incompatible with spec="1.5" and to use a more up to date JVM.
    When launched with jre-6u18 it installed the j2re1.4.2 and continued to fail to launch the application initially, but succeeded to launch it on a second attempt.
    When launched with jre-6u24 it installed the j2re1.4.2 and ultimately failed on any consecutive attempt as well as the initial attempt usually with the following console output:
    Java Web Start 1.6.0_24

    Has anybody else experienced this type of breakage? Does anybody else have an answer, solution, or suggestion other than "upgrade your 1.4.2 app"?
    thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    this problem seems to be general. You will get every time the error in the Step if the password specified by user is longer as 9 characters.
    Updating password of SAP<SID>DB in UM_OBJECTS
    Updating OS username to 162492 in UM_OBJECTS
    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    done with AP7 stuff
    MaxDB: Setting password for user CONTROL
    done
    MaxDB: Setting password for user SUPERDBA
    MaxDB: command failed: <DBMException -24988 ERR_UNKNOWN unknown error>
    Mon Oct 09 09:55:20 IST 2006 MaxDB: rc of changing passwords = 1
    The error has nothing to do with already installed instances ... The password may not be longer as 9 chars!

  • OIM11g Error GTC trusted recon using Database Application Tables 9.1.0.5.0

    Hi!
    I'm using OIM 11g (11.1.1.3.0) with Database Application Tables 9.1.0.5.0.
    I've setup GTC trusted recon connector as follows:
    1st Step: Filled required Run time parameters
    2nd Step: Mapped 11 fields
    - User ID
    - First Name
    - Last Name
    - Email
    - Organization
    - Role
    - Design Console Access
    - Status
    - Employee Number
    When I run the task I get an error in the log.

    The error is "(EMPLOYEE_NUMBER) does not exist in table USR". This field is a default OIM field. If I remove it from the mapping, the recon works OK.
    I have the same error if I mapping a UDF field that the label has a white space (eg.: Cost Center).
    This happens with other default OIM field:
    - Hire Date
    - Display Name
    Any idea?
    Are there any workaround for this?
    Thanks,
    Ariel

    Hi!
    I found the bug in metalink "Bug 10041190 GTC Recon Failed With new OIM UDF Attribute Map If Attribute Name Has Space"
    The workaround is: Don't use UDF's with a space in the attribute name.
    This issue is fixed in 11.1.1.3.2
    Thanks,
    Ariel

  • Java Webstart in Windows 7

    I have a Java Webstart application running on a Windows 7 Laptop. An Apache Tomcat webserver is also installed on this laptop so everything is self contained. When the laptop is not connected to a network and I start the application, Webstart gives me two instances of the application. When the laptop is connected to a network, I get one instance.
    I also have an identical installation on a Windows Vista PC. Irrespective of whether or not this PC is connected to a network, I always get one instance of the application when I start it.
    I would like to hear from anyone who has noticed similar behaviour and whether they have an explanation and whether they can advise if this is a 'bug' or a 'feature'.

    Thanks a lot for your reply.
    but no luck. still nothing happens.... javaws just dies without logging anything?
    maybe its a security problem?
