Java Window Painting Problems

I am just getting into Java so forgive me if this a newbie question because well, I'm a newbie.
I downloaded JBuilder 6.0 and got to work learning the language. The problem is that anything I use written in the Java lanuage when I move the Window it scambles(We are talking aplications). So if IE was written in Java and you moved this window all the text and buttons will suddenly appear under the old ones when your mouse clicks or moves over them. So it apears that all the controls have shifted. Another problem is using the scroll bar makes the text apear scambled and like lines are going through them. The only way I know to fix this is force it to completly re-draw by Maximizing the window and then Minimizing it.
I would really like to solve this problem so using Java opposed to C++ is practicle. I mean I do like to move the Windows around. My brother is having the same problem when he uses LimeWire; a Napster like program written in Java.
I am running:
Athlon XP 1.4ghz
Asus A7V266 w/ 256 DDR(2100@CL2)
Voodoo 3 3000
Windows ME
Everything Java is up to date.
Thanks,

Hi,
I am facing excatly the same problem as you've mentioned. I am not using Windows blind or anyother program to alter the look and feel of my OS.
I am running WIN 2K Professional Edition. Any further information on this would really help as I have already spent days trying to solve the painting issue.
Thanks,
Y
If anyone would like to know what was going on
on I'll tell you. Basicly I use Litestep and
WindowBlinds as a way that I can create my own OS
design. Litestep Replaces the Explorer shell and you
get to design now it looks, feels and enteracts. And
WindowBlinds lets you skin and change the way Windows
act.
I should have though of this before, but what
at happens is WindowBlinds has to intercept the Calls
to draw the windows and then it draws then itself. The
problem being I don't think as of right now it works
when it intercepts Java calls.
I'll just have to unload WindowBlinds when I program
Java or use it. Not the best solution but its a
start.
Thanks for the help,
~`DarkEyes`~

  • Java 2d - Painting problem

hi, I have problem with painting. Every time, when I minimize and then maximize application, the whole screen starts to "repaint" it's content (everything what was drawed). Normally it's not so big problem you don't register it, but I'm using some delay when drawing (Thread.sleep (x) ), and
then it's BIG problem, because always when minimized/maximized it starts to paint again and it's clearly visible...Also when I cover window of my application with another window, and then hide it, it do same thing. It's possible to avoid this? It's very unpleasant. thanx a lot
PS: Do not tell me not to use delay :) It's absolutely necessary in my application, because I must use some animations...

It does make logical sense if you were for instance calling the sleep method within a different thread, such as the EventQueue thread.
Rather than use the sleep method to create your delays, use a javax.swing.Timer thread set to a specific delay.
This way the animation is painted to the panel on a seperate thread.

  • Java & Windows XP Problems

I really hope someone can help me with this, because it become soooooo frustrating!
I originally ran Java 2 1.2.2 on a 733mhz P3 64Mb RAM PC Win 98, using Textpad 3 with no problems at all.
I've now upgraded to a 1.8Ghz Duron, 128Mb RAM, Win XP. I downloaded and installed Textpad 4.6 first and then installed Java SDK1.4.1 & JRE.
The first time I installed it, and tried to compile a very simple "Hello World" progam using the "Compile Java" command from the tools menu, the javac command would crash, and therefore not run. The resultant message would simply say "exited with code XXXXXXXXXXX". (Sorry, can't remember what the code was!)
Strangely, I tried again recently to install it, and this time it seemed to install successfully because it will compile but it would come up with a Java Hotspot Virtual Machine Error. I have no idea what this means! Why is it saying this?
I've searched the bug database and followed the installation instructions, and haven't been able to make much sense of the error.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is Java 2 1.4.1 actually compatible with XP?

    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=54&thread=305813
This is about the most active recurring thread about XP and 1.4 compatibility problems. I don't have any problem with XP (prof), 1.4 and TextPad. I run a Sony VIAO laptop that doesn't have an ATI video card.
Dumb question, but you did set your TextPad preferences to include the compile and run options? I guess you wouldn't see them in the tools drop-down if you hadn't. Sorry, had to ask.
My options on compile are = parameters: $File, initial folder: $FileDir
on run application = parameters: $BaseName initial folder: $FileDir
on run applet = same as application
Can't remember if those are the defaults, but I expect they are.
make sure your path is OK. I don't remember doing anything special or heroic to make TP work on my XP machine...
TextPad is very much my favorite stand-alone text editor, but I totally agree that when you are ready for an IDE (do it!) eclipse is great. It's open source, free, and you have hundreds of choices for plugin options. The nice part with eclipse is you can have your text editor, hex editor, XML tool, Python, Java, C++, etc. all open in the same tool at the same time.

  • Window painting problem

I have a JFrame with lots and lots of JLabels on it...I want to paint the JFrame background and make the JLabels' background transparent...I use the following in my JFrame's paint method:
    public static class statWindow extends JFrame {
    statWindow(String caption) {
    super(caption);
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    super.paint(g);
    window.setBackground(Color.white);
the window flickers white for a second, but then returns to that dull gray...two of the JLabels whose background i explicitly set to the window's bgcolor turn white; why does that matter? am i tying a reference to the window's background? and why won't the window stay white?

    1. Setting a JLabel to be transparent means calling setOpaque(false).
So you should only see the text, not a rectangle of white around it.
    2. Look at the paint() routine.
You're choosing the colour after the paint has been done.
You should just need to call JFrame.setBackground(Color.white) in your the JFrame constructor.

  • Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6.1 window paint problem

In case anyone else has this problem....
Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6.1 upgrade is just released and allows video capture of HDV (high def 1440 x 1080i) video.
Problem:  In Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6.1, the "logging/capture window" does not repaint correctly when logging/capturing HDV (NTSC 1440 x 1080i) video.
Symptoms:  When the video stream starts, the window should be displaying the video stream, but it is black.  If you pop up another window overlapping the "logging window" and then close it, the logging window starts displaying the video, but only on the part that was not overlapped, the overlapped part remains black.  If you slowly drag the overlapping window away, the "logging window" now displays the video stream except a few pixels at the edge where you dragged away.
Changing the screen resolution does not seem to matter.
It looks symptomatic of a Video card driver problem to me.
    Configuration:
Adapter: MSI GeForce 6600 256 MB card
    BIOS: 5.43.02.27.00
    IRQ: 16
    Bus: PCI Express x16
    Memory: 256 MB
    ForceWare version 71.84
    Processor: dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz
    MSI clocks at default settings.
    Windows XP Professional SP2
    DirectX 9.0c
The utility Check3D (from Pinnacle I think) shows the video card / drivers seems to check out OK.
Don't know if it is a Pinnacle problem or video card problem, but I suspect the video card / drivers, because the program is probably doing the same thing in standard definition as high definition, and it works ok in standard definition.  I think most people use AGP cards with LE also.
If anyone else can confirm this or has ideas to try, much appreciated.
(holy cow, is there a way to hide those jittery emoticons?)

You can open 6.1 files in Cp version 6.01.  So that IS an option, though albeit probably not a very palatable one if you've just upgraded everyone around you to 6.1.
If your main reason for developing in 6.1 was the drag and drop interactions, you may not have been aware that there have been AS3 widgets available to do drag and drop in Captivate since version 4.  Those widgets are also now compatible with all Cp versions up to and including 6.01 and 6.1.

  • Help Please, with Annoying painting problem.

    Hi:
I keep running in to this annoying problem:
Swing Components not being re-drawn properly after:
    Windows turns on the screensaver
or to a lesser degree if the Java program is Iconified / deiconified.
Components with Images on them get corrupted and the image is not drawn properly, maybe just the top cm or so, but it is annoying..
And I can't figure out what or if anything I am doing wrong.
It happens in a few of my applications.........
mostly those wher I have overidden paintComponent()
If someone would like to see if they have the same thing happen, below is an example that demonstrates the problem.
You will probably need to fiddle with you power settings so that you monitor blanks after 1 min. to avoid having to wait too long.
Run the program, wait for screen to blank out, bring screen back,...
If the java picture is not corrupt try re-sizing the JFrame and see what happens.
    I am using Win98SE
    I have Java:
    java version "1.4.2-beta"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2-beta-b19)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-beta-b19, mixed mode)
I would appreciate someone trying this out. Even if it doesn't happen for them.
Or maybe there is a glaring Error in my code.... And if so I could fix it..
Here is an exmple program to demonstrate this.
Two classes, The JPanel was obviously meant to do other things but I cut it down..
    The main:

    Help would be appreciated.
No dukes cos I somehow have less than 0.
Arrg my code was all neat - before I pasted it in to the code tags.

I tried your code and did not notice any painting problems. I'm using JDK1.4.1 on Windows 98.
I don't see any problems with your code. Here is the thread I usually recommend when people want to add an image to a component, in case you want to run another test:

  • Opening a Java Window from a jsp page on the client side

    Hi all,
Thanks in advance to all who could help me for this problem.
I've written some jsp pages. In one of them, I open a new Java Window,
which is a simple Java Frame. If I test this directly on the Tomcat
    server, everything works well.
But when I call the jsp page through a web browser of a distant client
(normal use), and when I want to see the java window, no window pops
up. It appears that the Java Window pops up on the server, and not on
the client side, which is what I wanted.
Could someone tell me how to make the Java frames appear on the client
side ? (Is it linked to the code or to the configuration of Tomcat ?)
    Thanks in advance,
    Alexis.

JSP always run on the server. On the client you only see the results.
But you can use applets on the client side: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/applet.html

  • EA3 - SQL History window refresh problem

Hi, I have noticed that version 1.2 (possibly farther back) up to and including 1.5 EA3 have a issue with refreshing the SQL history window in a special scenario.
If the tab is completely undocked from SQL developer and then expanded across two monitors, as I scroll down the parts of the data rows on the non-primary monitor are not refreshed and become jagged.
I am running SQL developer on Win XP SP2 with whatever version of Java came with EA3.

Thanks, that seemed to work. It looks like Java is painting the grid in two parts now, with the non-default monitor side being second, but at least it repaints.
As far as a default, I did already have the following option in the config file:
    AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.ddoffscreen=false
I don't what difference the -J option makes but that's what I had. Thanks again.

  • Paint problems in 1.4-RC1

Is anyone else experiencing repaint problems with RC1? I've seen two intermittent things so far:
    1) When a modal JDialog is shown above its owner window, the contents of the owner window are being painted inside the JDialog
    2) Scroll bars (JScrollPane) are not being repainted properly when window is resized. Phantom scroll buttons remain at the old position.
    Any others out there?

My JDK 1.4.0 Swing application does not paint very well on 2 out of 4 NT / SP5-6machines tested. Its OK on 2 machines and NOT OK on 2 others... The machines have mixture of different graphics cards.
The base problem reminds me of 'running out of paint handles' in Win 3.1 days... i.e. the GUI fails to refresh and gets cluttered with 'random' strips, streched painting, general 'junk' that won't clear. Its quite serious because when the application window is moved the edit-box / buttons etc don't necessarily move at same time and get partially 'off the window' and stop working. Minimize/Maximize and drag overs by other apps don't clear it. The problem seems to get worse the longer the application is executed and seems to be even worse when there's more than 1 window up a time... i.e. it almost seems like 'lack of horsepower' in CPU but these machines are PIII 400MHZ with OK RAM so there should be enough CPU.
Note that JDK 1.3 'corrects' the problem - i.e. running same code on JDK 1.3 (instead of JDK 1.4) works just fine and does NOT have the paint problems.
    ANY HELP APPRECIATED!!

  • Turning off the annoying green rectangle around Java windows

How does one turn off the annoying flashing green rectangle around Java windows? And how do you stop it from jumping to the top of other windows.
Both of these functions are quite annoying and seem rather pointless.
    (I am using Firefox)
    Thanks

Are you referring to some Applet that you have programmed or something you found on the net? Even for the latter case, I don't have either of the problems you mention, so it's probably related to the site or your browser settings.

  • Java Windows focus

    Hi all,
it's my first post on this forum, but I've already read lots of threads that helped me a lot! Now Here there is my problem:
I need to check if my Java App window has the focus or if there is another OS windows that gains the focus. When an user clicks on the Java program or on a component of the java window, I need to catch that event and do something. I tried to add a FocusListener to the Frame like this
    this.getFrame().addFocusListener(new FocusListener() {
                public void focusGained(FocusEvent e) {
                    System.out.println("FocusGained")
                public void focusLost(FocusEvent e) {
                    System.out.println("FocusLost")
});Since I'm using NetBeans (created a Desktop Application) I have to add the focusListener after the initcomponents method.
But this doesn't work, nothing appears on the console....
    Help me!

Yeah you solved my problem! I had to use a WindowFocusListener and not a simple FocusListener. I don't know why I haven't seen this method in the javaDoc...
    Thank you for your help!

  • Java & Windows (7): Reliably getting IPv4 netmask?

I've run into a known bug with Java 6 on Windows. My understanding is that the normal way to get the netmask is to look up the network prefix length and do some bit shifts. The problem is that on Windows the prefix length is often returned incorrectly, so we get a 128 when we should get a 24 or 20.
At http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1221517/how-to-get-subnet-mask-using-java, it is suggested to put -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true on the Java command line. Unfortunately, on Windows 7, adding that as either a VM parameter or on the Java command line seems to have no effect.
    (a) Does anyone know any OTHER work-arounds for this problem that might still work on Windows 7?
    (b) Alternatively, is there an entirely different way to get the netmask that is reliable?
    Thanks!

On CodeRanch, someone explained that I had made an etiquette error by not listing the other places where I have asked this question.
    Here they are:

I am actively monitoring each site.
Explanation: I first posted on StackOverflow, but I didn't get a response. Usually I'm amazed at how quick people are to respond on that site, so I'm assuming the lack of response is due to this being a hard problem. I've been digging pretty hard on this, and most I've seen is some suggestions as to how to fix the problem in Java itself, but no work-arounds that actually work for me. Thus, I was motivated to post in multiple places in the hope that I'd get some help somewhere.
    Sorry for the confusion.
