Javascript: Check Internet connection before attempting to run SQL command on remote server

Good evening,
I am developing a form that reads and posts data from/to a table hosted on a remote PC running XP/SQL Server Express 2008 R2. I access the server through the Internet.
My problem is that if the internet connection happens to be down when I -eg- try to save data to the table using the form, the SQL command tries to reach the server for a while, and eventually crashes.
Is there a way to programatically verify that a remote SQL server is reachable over the Internet before attempting to run a command on it?
Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Randy

Did you find a solution to this? I am attempting a similar form and need to verify there is an active internet connection before allowing the form to process.

    Downloading ebook stops after 3% downloaded-error message appears: "check internet connection".
    Why does it stop downloadng before finished?

    I belong to a book club at the Public Library in Los Angeles.
    I am supposed to get the downloaded books (free) from their Media Library,
    (I listen when I'm out and around, or in the car- and read the actual book when I'm at home-)
    They direct users to download from an engine (?) called OverDrive.com, or OverDriveMedia.com.
    There are lots of books free of charge.
    Thanks for your response.

  • Checking Internet connectivity in AIR application

    Hi All,
    How to check internet connected or not in AIR app.
    Event.NETWORK_CHANGE only tells the change in the status,but it dosent
    tell if it is disabled or enabled.
    Please share if anything else can tell if internet is available.
    -Sheetal.

    You should also look into the service monitoring classes, especially the URLMonitor class.
    For example, the following ActionScript code uses an instance of the URLMonitor class to detect connectivity changes to the Adobe website:
    var monitor:URLMonitor = new URLMonitor(new URLRequest('http://www.example.com'));
    monitor.addEventListener(StatusEvent.STATUS, announceStatus);
    monitor.start();
    function announceStatus(e:StatusEvent):void {
        trace("Status change. Current status: " + monitor.available);
    Here's a JavaScript version:
    var monitor = new air.URLMonitor(new URLRequest('http://www.example.com'));
    monitor.addEventListener(StatusEvent.STATUS, announceStatus);
    monitor.start();
    function announceStatus(e:StatusEvent):void {
         trace("Status change. Current status: " + monitor.available);

  • No Internet Connection Before Login Apps Launch

    I have exhausted every known procedure to try and get an internet connection before my login items (Mail App & iChat) launch.
    I didn't have this problem with my G5 w/Mac OSX 10.4.8. At startup I could watch the blue screen and startup progress bar. During the process I got an "Establishing Network Connection" message (or something similar) and then the computer would continue to boot. Mail and iChat would launch and my mail would be retrieved and I chat would become available.
    On the Pro Mac I get no notification at all on what's happening. It boots normally, Mail and iChat startup and I get a dialog box that says I'm not connected to the internet.
    Within a few seconds I can hit the 'get mail' icon and mail is then retrieved, I also have to select a "Available" from iChat to log on.
    The problem is that the internet connection is not recognized until the boot process is completed.
    Side note: At startup I get the gray screen with the Apple logo for about fifteen seconds, the screen flashes to blue and for a fraction of a second a dialog box pops-up and says "Starting Mac OS X" before my desktop appears with all my login items open. On my G5 it use to say "establishing network connection" or something similar.
    I suspect this has something to do with my problem.

    I have IPv6 Address turned off. Problem persists regardless of whether this is on or off.
    I have a valid ethernet ID and is configured automatically.
    I have not modified any other setting.
    My cable modem is connected directly to the ethernet port. It's the same modem I used with the G5.
    I have discussed this with Apple's Tech Support on two occasions and they couldn't come up with a solution.
    Before I call for an appointment with my local Mac Store for a diagnostic test, I would like to hear from anyone who has had a similar problem or can provide a solution.

    Here's a theory: the Mac Pro starts up much faster than an older computer and therefore applications and system are loaded before the network has finished initializing. So perhaps that is all there is to it?
    I'm not at home right now (and therefore no access to my Mac Pro) but I will add some network-aware programs to my login and see what happens and report back.
    The suggestion to turn off automatic login is probably a good one as this will give the system more time to get the network up before apps launch.
    Alternatively, there is a program called "Lingon" that you can use to re-order the system startup items. This might be useful in changing the priority of the network/dhcp status. Again, I will look in to it at home and report back.

    Can't access messages. Asks for apple ID and when correctly entered bounces back with check Internet connection and try again. Internet fine, updated to latest OS and reset, but no improvement.

    Make sure your time zone and time are correct. Have the iPad get the time automatically.

  • When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.

    When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.  It used to crash when I went to the iTunes store but, after installing the newest version of iTunes it crashes if there is an internet connection.  I can turn off my internet access and then run the software but, once I try the iTunes store again it crashes.  It does not give an error message as to why its doing this.  Just says it encountered a problem.  I cannot do anything with my iPad or iPod without this working.  Its extremely frustrating.
    I have also contacted Apple several times and they give me links to other's problems but, none have worked to fix this.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
    (Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
    In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
    If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
    Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

    Hi,
    Please try the following.
    1. Open an internet browser type printer's IP address.
    2. Should bring you to the printer's status page.
    3. Select the networking tab at the top.
    4. Left hand side select IPv4 under wireless.
    5. Under DNS address Configuration select Manual DNS Server.
    6. For Preferred enter 8.8.8.8
    7. For Alternate enter 8.8.4.4
    8. Select apply. You might get a warning saying this could interrupt connection that's fine.
    9. Turn printer off for about 30 seconds then try again.
    Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
