Javascript fails exclusivily in browsers running on boot camp

Hello guys
I'm a Flash and mobile apps developer, and I recently came across very disturbing behavior, while running some of my work on MacBooks which are using boot camp.
For many of our projects, we utlize SWFAddress open source JavaScript library. Let me just paste WIKI description, because they phraze far better than I possibly could:
SWFAddress is an open-source JavaScript library that enables Adobe Flash/Flex and JavaScript/AJAX websites and web applications to support deep linking, a practice that enables users to link to a specific section or page of the content. Its importance is because such Rich Internet Application platforms provide only a single URL to access the specific content, and any user navigation within the content cannot be uniquely identified, or shared by means of the URL. When the developer of the content integrates with SWFAddress, users are able to use standard browser navigation functionality, share and bookmark unique URLs that represent the currently displayed section or state of the content. The library is commonly used on Flash websites and web applications being the only available deep linking JavaScript library for Flash on the web. SWFAddress has been found to be used by over 10,000 websites as of 2010.
I notice that the above script won't work at all in any browser as long as boot camp is running on the user's machine, while it performs without problem on any Os and browser , whether it's a iMac, Macbook, PC desktop or PC laptop. I tested it in old and latest browser, with same results. Please do know, that I have checked the issue across multiple machines and it is 100% consistant on each. I can't possibly see the reason behind it, but there is something about Boot Camp that causes the browser to fail to perform properly, and I wonder if any of you have any idea, why would it happen?
These libraries has been writter and rewrittern to be bullet proof and cross os compatible, and they do work like charm. Except for mac and boot camp combos.
Take for example: http://www.drawingart.org/
Select any link you like and press the back button. It will take you nicely to the previous Flash section you just came from. But if you test it on any macbook running boot camp, it will fail regardless what browser you use. I also though it was related to single machine and I blamed the installation, but a week ago, two totally unrelated projects and 4 unrelated clients reported the very same problem. So I'm more than certain it's not an isolated case, it's exclusive to brwosers running on OS with boot camp.
Please share whatever clues, hints you might have. I will sincerely appreciate your expertise.
Best regards
Seba

I understand your post to mean that you used bootcamp to install XP and to install Windows 7. If my interpretation is correct, I may have found the reason for your difficulty.
I do not use Boot Camp or Windows®.However, if your system info correctly shows that you are using Mac OS X (10.5.8) on a Intel 20" iMac (late 2008), this article from Apple's Boot Camp Support Page seems to say that you would need to upgrade your Mac OS to 10.6 in order to use Windows 7:

  • I have an iMac 8.1, OSX 10.6.8 with XP running in Boot Camp partition. My USB keyboard (MB110LL/A) was damaged by water. I ordered a new keyboard from the Apple Store. I was sent model MB110LL/B. Special function keys will not work in XP. Any Ideas?

I have an iMac 8.1, OSX 10.6.8, Boot Camp 3.2 running Windows XP. My original keyboard (MB110LL/A) was damaged by a water spill. I ordered a new one from the Apple Store. They sent me MB110LL/B, function keys need updated drivers (Boot Camp 3.3) which will only install if Windows 7 is installed. I have a large amount of older software that runs under XP but not Windows 7. The Apple support team basically said "too bad". If they replace a keboard model with a new model, they should at least make it backwards compatable or provide a Boot Camp update that will allow this model to work on older iMacs. Reloading Bootcamp 3.3 several times has no effect because it does not detect Windows 7. Any Ideas or help would be appreciated.

It is free. It is beta. It works well - I use it on mine and two PCs as well...
MS Security Essentials will no longer install due to compatibiliity issues - that is the idea of a beta - and the RC could be out in June.
Windows 7 doesn't work great on any Mac, or Apple drivers, fan cvontrol to manage heat, and other issues.
Put 8 in and get to know it, then when the RC comes out you'll be ready

  • Can't update Windows XP SP1 to SP3 via CD to run on Boot Camp partition

I have just partitioned my Mac HD via Boot Camp - with a 42GB Windows XP partition to run a program not available for Mac. The Windows XP (retail version with license) I purchased came with SP1 "upgradeable to SP3 for free" after purchase.
Now the conundrum: I can't get online via Windows XP to upgrade the SP without installing the Boot Camp files from the OSX DVD. The Boot Camp files won't install onto the SP1 partition. And I can't upgrade to SP3 from a CD. (When I download the SP3 (have also tried SP2) onto my Mac HD, copy to CD, start the Windows XP partition, and attempt to install — I get an error: "setup requires 4 additional MB of of free space...") The installation is trying to go onto the C: drive that is 42GB, so the 4MB error can't be the real problem. I have tried installing to several other folders besides the default (ServicePackUninstall) folder, all on the C: drive and got the same error.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

XP SP1 will not install on bootcamp, SP2 is the minimum. As your upgrade is 'post-install' it won't work. May I ask why you are installing a largely unsupported 10 yr old OS? Win7 is really much better.

  • Can quickbooks 2012 for windows run on boot camp?

I just bought the new macbook pro, and was wondering if I can run Quickbooks 2012 for windows on the boot camp using windows?

Yes. But first you have to install Windows.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Can vmware run on Boot Camp? Please Help as soon as possible

I recently installed vista ultimate through vmware, but is it possible in any way to boot this vista OS I installed through vmware fusion through boot camp?
Please help as soon as someone finds a certain answer.
    Thanks

Running Windows (Vista or XP) is somewhat slower in virtualization than in BootCamp. If this is an important issue for you - and particularly if you are going to be running programs that benefit from fast screen updates - then you want BootCamp. If you need BootCamp then install it and afterwards install VMWare Fusion and use the BootCamp installation rather than a virtualized disk.
If you are satisfied with the performance of virtualization there is no benefit from having BootCamp installed in terms of running VMWare. This is a disadvantage though - you have to shut down, you cannot save an instance, at least with version 1. I haven't downloaded version 2 to see if this has changed. It is much faster to resume an instance than to restart Windows and then your applications.

So I installed Windows 8.1 Pro through Boot Camp but I can't access the Mac OS partition from windows even though boot camp partition shows up while I'm on Mac OS. I have installed all the drivers from apple but still it didn't work. Then I downloaded Paragon HFS+ which was free for windows 8 and 8.1 thinking that this would solve my problem. • Install Instructions for Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 running in Boot Camp

These are the instructions I used to install Windows XP Mode on my 27" iMac while booted into Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on the Boot Camp partition, I posted them in a reply to another thread but thought they might be useful as a higher level topic.
Reboot into Windows 7 on your iMac and follow these instructions:
    1. Download and install Windows XP mode from the following Microsoft website. You do not need an XP installation disk, XP will be installed automatically by this process (there are three links to click, in order, to install this. The site will perform a Windows Genuine Advantage check and you may need to make sure your browser allows certain items or the install will stall until you do, look for warnings or permissions during installation in the menu bar of the browser):
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
    2. After you complete the 3rd installation step, check your Start menu in Windows 7 and look for Windows Virtual PC. Open it and double click Windows XP Mode (it should be the only thing in there) to boot up XP.
    3. You can adjust the amount of RAM you allocate to XP mode by going to the Start Menu --> Windows Virtual PC again, then right click on Windows XP Mode, then choose Settings.
It works great but I can't get it to fill my 27" screen in full screen mode, let me know if you figure out how to do that. --thanks

    Instructions, not a question.

  • Windows Vista Boot Camp always running

I just recently purchased a macbook air ( 1.86, 128gb ssd) and I've been extremely happy with it. I was wondering if people have noticed that the fan is always running when using Vista but not in OS X?
    Is there a solution?

I have the same machine with Vista running via Boot Camp and Fusion. Although the fan does run more frequently than when running Mac o/s, it certainly doesn't run "all the time" as you report.
Note, however, that I only use Vista for occasional browsing with Explorer and to run one app for which there is no Mac alternative; could be that it's the app you're running that makes the fan more active?

  • Can you run Boot Camp and Fusion at the same time?

    Hi,
I had boot camp installed on my mac pro and loved it. I decided to get greedy and install Fusion using the boot camp partition. The Fusion install went ok but then Microsoft started to get fussy. Every time I would do something on Fusion it would ask me to "Re-activate Windows" when I logged into boot camp. Maybe if I saw Fusion fully working I wouldn't want to run boot camp any more but I think I want to have the option to run either. Right now I only have 1 gig real memory on my mac pro and Fusion seems a little slow compared to native boot camp. Can I run both boot camp and fusion without having to buy two native copies of Windows XP pro? I don't want a "sensible" answer, I want an answer that takes into account how Microsoft treats this re-activation situation.
I guess Leopard might make this all obsolete, but until then .....
    ... Flash Gordon

You need to make sure to install VMware Tools into your virtual machine (while booted into Windows via Fusion). Once you do this you shouldn't have to continually activate Windows when going back and forth from Boot Camp to Fusion. I've seen this discussed over on the VMware Fusion discussion boards, so you may want to look there for more details.
Also, if Windows starts telling you it's been activated too many times, you can call Microsoft and they'll give you an alternate activation key. The phone number is listed on the Windows error screen. I had to do it and they were very accommodating. I just told them I was running Windows in a virtual machine, and there were almost no questions asked.
You don't need to buy 2 copies of Windows to run both Boot Camp and VMFusion.

  • Problem running BCUpdate.exe (boot camp 2.1 update)

Just bought a new iMac 20", upgraded from OSX 10.5.4 to 10.5.6 (plus all other s/w upgrades), ran Boot Camp, made a 50GB Windows NTFS partition, installed Win/XP SP3 from the Windows DVD. Booted into WIndows. So far so good.
Under vanilla Windows, I stuck in the Leopard Install DVD and autoran the Boot Camp drivers install. It crashed half-way through with the blue screen of death (flashed up for only 1 sec), and then the machine automatically rebooted. Now it will no longer boot normally into Windows, it gets halfway and then repeats the crash & reboot scenario over & over.
So, I reinstalled all of Windows (again!), but instead of using the Leopard Install DVD, I tried to run the Boot Camp 2.1 Update package, BCUpdate.exe. However, when I double click on the package in Windows, nothing happens. I right-click -> Open, and it doesn't run. Run as... Administrator, it doesn't run. Safe Mode won't let me run it either. The checksum of the file is correct. I don't get it.
    What am I doing wrong???

Hmm, for that to work, I would need hardwired Internet access. All I have is wireless, but Windows doesn't see the Broadcom card, so I can't go the online Apple S/W update route.
So, I'm still stuck. Maybe there's some way I can make an autorun CD or something out of the BCUpdate.exe file...?
