Jaxws call to oracle bpel service question

Question

I have a bpel service running in oracle soa 11g.
This expects an input message some thing like this:
<input>
<element1>data</element1>
<payload> <test>this is xml payload</test> </payload>
</input>
This service is invoked by jaxws client after setting the required input message.
The problem is during the consumption of the xml message within the payload tag.
I use something like this in my bpel assign :
                <from expression="ora:getContentAsString(bpws:getVariableData('inputVariable','payload','/input/payload/*'))"/>
                <to variable="inputMsg"/>
But instead of the xml payload I see a nodelist like this : oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLNodeList@3440cbfe
Any pointers are appreciated.

This is how I am sending the message from jax-ws client :
    bpel_client_ep = new bpel_client_ep();
    PublishBPEL publishBPEL = bpel_client_ep.getBPEL_pt();
    PublishMessage payload = new PublishMessage();
    payload.setBussinessObject("testBO");
    payload.setId("testID");
    String xmlString = "<test>This is a test payload from java</test>";
    payload.setPayload(xmlString);
    publishBPEL.publish(payload);           
This is the wsdl for the service :
