JCalendar and GroupLayout

Thanks for taking the time to listen to my problem. I am a moderately-experienced Java developer, but I am a newbie when it comes to Swing components. I am trying to build a program for someone, and I need a date chooser.
I downloaded the JCalendar from http://www.toedter.com/en/jcalendar/. However, I am unable to implement the JDateChooser effectively, and I think it's because of my limited experience with Swing.
I use Netbeans to build all my Swing apps, because it knows everything that I don't. =D My THEORY is, it's something to do with GroupLayout vs GridBagLayout. My theory stems from the fact that I copy/pasted the DateChooserPanel code (which is from the JCalendar demo), and it worked. I began commenting off lines of code 1 by 1, and the entire thing disappeared when I commented off the "setLayout(gridbag);" Also, the panels I had created in Netbeans finally started showing the DateChooser when I made all their layouts GridBag...
Does anyone else have trouble using JCalendar components with a GroupLayout? Are we forced to use GridBagLayout? Layouts are a bit advanced for me. I'm not unwilling to take the time, but I've spent too many hours on this (small) feature to not ask for some help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I also posted this question on their forums, but being that the most recent post was 2 months ago, I thought I'd post it here also to see people's input.

I suggest that you first read the Sun layout tutorial as they're really not that hard to use -- just avoid GridBagLayout if you can, especially early on. Instead focus on GridLayout, BorderLayout, BoxLayout, and FlowLayout. It will be effort well-spent.
If after this effort you're still striking out, then look into creating and posting an SSCCE (see the link)

JCalendar and JcomboBox access with keyboard
Hello guys, What can i do?, ive implemented a JComboBox (this have autocompletion, downloaded of http://www.orbital-computer.de/JComboBox/), and Jcalendar inside a JTable but the problem appear when i try access to typing/input with keyboard in a JComboBox (i cant), this only activate with a mouse, the same ocurr with the next cell (JCalendar), this only activate with a mouse.
What i need to change in the source code??

I have created a small set of utility classes that are in a package. I placed them in a directory and set my CLASSPATH variable to it. I am able to use them when the just stand there as class files in their appropriate directory tree.
What I was wondering is: is there a way to zip them up into a jar and still import them into a new program from the jar?Not quite what I am after. The problem is that the code won't compile when it's packaged in a jar, but will when I explode it out into the directory.

I'm trying to use JCalendar and I downloaded the jar file from the site. It says to add that file to the classpath. So I added the file to the folder that contains the .class file.... is that the correct folder? Then, do I have to import something or what? I'm using Eclipse in case that matters. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Simple date selector based on three combo boxes
Hi all,
I am looking for a simple script to allow users to choose a valid date. However, it should only be based on combo boxes (I just need the basics really).
Similar to: http://www.easyjet.co.uk/en/book/index.asp
But without the visual calendar bit and with a separate combo box for choosing the year. I had a look at jcalendar and various other scripts, but they are way too advanced for my application
Does anybody know how to accomplish this?

for 'A' HBox I have many boxes inside 'A' may be 20 and these boxes contains the label for each box A1,A2,....A20
some of them may be highlighted with red color based on the values coming from database for respectivg HBoxes A,B,C etc
Now I want to select a value from combo box if it is 7 I have only 3 positions to select in 'A' which didn't highlighted
and these three are in contiguous so when i click on any one of them the remaing possible number of values to be highlighted either they are left or right to the selected box and then i have 4 in my hand to select I need to have the chance to select them from any 4 from any remaining boxes from B,C etc
and if tere are 7 contiguous boxes to select and my selected value is 3 only three needs to be selected when i click on any one box -
How to avoid multiple redraws of Swing components?
I have this problem every time I work with swing components. For example, I am creating my own JCalendar. I have a combobox to change the month and two buttons to move to the next and previous months.
Naturally when you press the next month button the combobox should by updated by the program to reflect the new month.
The problem is, I redraw my JCalendar if the user changes the combobox and when the user presses a button. So when the user presses a button, I get the event from the button which redraws the calendar, and then I get another event as a result of the combobox being changed by my program. So I get two events, and two redraws of my calendar which tends to make it a little sluggish.
Should I just remove my comobox listener temporarily when the user presses the "Next Month" or "Prev Month" buttons?
I've encounted this type of problem before, so I must just have a bad design. Should I just create a method for JCalendar called update()? Tehn technically I could update the model of my JCalendar and not have the UI updated unless the user calls update().Why don't you do the redraw only when the combo box changes and not when the buttons are pressed. Since the buttons always change the combo box anyway. The buttons change the combo box and the combox calls the redraw.

I'm using JDK 1.6, and don't have a lot of experience chasing down Swing problems. Could you please make some suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?? The print statements show me that the paintComponent method is being reached when I move the mouse over the button, but nothing gets drawn!!!

However, with a more complicated GUI and GroupLayout the button may not necessarily change size when the frame's size is set. It may remain at its preferred size - which is zero or close to it (since it has no text or icon). So now all of a sudden getWidth() and getHeight() return zero (or close to it). You need to set an appropriate preferred size

Auto-resize the components of JTabbedPane with JPanels
Hi,
We have swing window with tabbed pane having two JPanels. There are couple of components (button/text
fields/JXTable/Jtree ..etc)added to each panel. so far, every thing is working fine.
Issue is, when we try to expand the winodw size, the components of each panel are static. The size of components
are not changing accorning to window size. All the components are center alligned with increasing the window size. It would be great help, if you can help on this.

I suggest that you change to combinations of BorderLayout, GridLayout (without "Bag"!) and GroupLayout.

Use both laf project and Jcalendar?
Hi,
I have a problem when using some java beans in Forms 10gR2 with JRE 1.4.x.
I can't seem to make both the LaF AND the JCalendar work on the same form. I can use them separately and it all works fine, but when they're on the same Form, there's only one of them working.
And it all seems to be related to the position in the object tree of Forms. Whichever bean comes first (the higher one in the tree) gets activated and the other doesn't.
Did anyone manage to make them both work in the same form?Yes there is, sorry I forgot to look at the console since I've been using JRE...
And it made me notice I made I mistake when saying I was using JRE 1.4.x also.

Problem with ArrayLists and writing and reading from a .dat file (I think)
I'm brand new to this forum, but I'm sure hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with ArrayLists. This program was originally created with an array of objects that were displayed on a GUI with jtextFields, then cycling thru them via jButtons: First, Next, Previous, Last. Now I need to add the ability to modify, delete and add records. Both iterations of this program needed to write to and read from a .dat file.
It worked just like it was suppose to when I used just the array, but now I need to use a "dynamic array" that will grow or shrink as needed: i.e. an ArrayList.
When I aded the ArrayList I had the ArrayList use toArray() to fill my original array so I could continue to use all the methods I'd created for using with my array. Now I'm getting a nullPointerException every time I try to run my program, which means somewhere I'm NOT filling my array ???? But, I'm writing just fine to my .dat file, which is confusing me to no end!
It's a long program, and I apologize for the length, but here it is. There are also 2 class files, a parent and 1 child below Inventory6. This was written in NetBeans IDE 5.5.1.

Its a dumb question, but with NetBeans how do I find out which reference could be null? I'm not very familiar with how NetBeans works with finding out how to debug. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.The IDE is com-plete-ly irrelevant. It's all about the source code.
Do you understand anyway when and why a NullPointerException is been thrown? It is a subclass of RuntimeException and those kind of exceptions are very trival and generally indicate an design/logic/thinking fault in your code.

GroupLayout can only be used with one Container at a time
Dear all,
I am a beginner so please don't throw rocks at me...
I have created two frames with NetBeans. One is the main frame (extends from JPanel) and the other frame I put it to be started when pressing a button from the main frame (the second frame extends from JFrame). Both frames are created using the designer in NetBeans, so the code for creating the GUI is automatically generated by NetBeans, so both frames use the same layout (GroupLayout).
Here is the code of the button from the main frame to start the second one:

What I want to do: I want to have a main frame, from which I can start additional ones (the main frame must be always opened, while the additional ones can be closed after performing certain actions). I read a little about internal frames and I think this can be a solution, but I must edit the existing design...

How to force to wait and get input from a jframe-jpanel?
I would like to use a jframe-jpanel to get user input instead of using JOptionPane.showInputDialog since there will be more than 1 input.
But I could not do it. The code reads the panel lines and passes to other lines below without waiting for the okay button to be pressed.

I have a problem with Swing and Threads, I hope you help me (because I'm in the firsts two weeks in my new job)
I have two classes:
Form1: Its a JPanel class with JProgressBar and JLabel inside.
FormularioApplet: (the main) Its a JPanel class with a form1 inside.
I have to download a file from a server and show the progress of the download in the JProgressBar. To make it I do this:
In Form1 I make a Thread that update the progress bar and gets the fole from the server.
In FormularioApplet (the main) I call to the method getDownloadedFile from Form1 to get the File.
THE PROBLEM:
The execution of FormularioApplet finishes before the Thread of Form1 (with download the file) download the file. Then, when I call in FormularioApplet the variable with the file an Exception: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-1" java.lang.NullPointerException is generated.
First main begins his execution, then call to Form1 (a thread) then continues his execution and when the execution is finished ends the execution os Form1 and his thread.
How can I do for main class call the function and the Thread download his file after main class assign the file of return method?
How can I pass information froma class include an a main class. Form1 can't send to main (because main class made a Form1 f1 = new Form1()) any information from his end of the execution. I think if Form1 can say to main class that he finishes is job, then main class can gets the file.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
