JDBC Direct Connections to MS Access
My company utilizes an Intranet web Java client to post data into multiple Microsoft Access databases. For the longest we have used dbAnywhere as middleware to connect the applet and the database. dbAnywhere is no longer supported and this process seems to slow down the applet significantly as we wait for the data to be loaded into tables inside the applet. My question is two fold:
1) Is there a type-4 JDBC connector available to connect directly to MS Access databases and if so would it be difficult to implement or migrate to? This is important because dbAnywhere does not appear to be supported on Windows 2000, which is the platform we are migrating to. We need to eliminate dbAnywhere if possible.
2) What can be done to speed up the table loads in our applet? Are there some code optimizations that can be taken advantage of?
Any responses or help is greatly appreciated. I cannot post code due it's confidentiality.

By definition no such driver can exist. A type 4 driver is java only and connects directly to the database. Excluding file writes the only connection method is via sockets and there is nothing for a socket to connect to in a MS Access database - MS Access doesn't work that way.
You can look into type 3 driver. I believe there are a number of them. They use an intermediate server. Search here http://industry.java.sun.com/products/jdbc/drivers
You could implement your own using RmiJdbc at http://www.objectweb.org/. However I personally would think that that would require a serious long look at security issues before exposing a solution to the internet.

10G Forms connect to MS Access via JDBC
A new project requires a 10G Form to connect to MS Access database. I understand 10G no longer connects to Access using ODBC. Will JDBC work? If JDBC can be used does anyone have a "How To" document or examples on how to connect orms 10G to MS Access via JDBC
Thanks
RalphI dont think it will work. In 10g forms is going to implement transparent gateways.
Is there a possibility of getting the data from MS access directly to Oracle database and then connect to Oracle DB from forms ?

First i would like to Thank you for showing interest in solving my issue...After some research i found that desabling the " IP CEF" will solve the issue...when i desable i was able to communicate success fully with the router lan..But when i desable " IP CEF " Router cpu processer goes to 99% and hangs...
In the output of " sh process cpu" it shows 65% of utilization from "IP INPUT"
so plz give me an alternate solution ....thanks in advance.... -
Why should we have to connect to jdbc rather directly connecting to odbc?
Why should we have to connect to jdbc rather directly connecting to odbc.why there should be a bridge?
sandy,
The short answer is: because it should.
The long answer is: bb-ee-cc-aa-uu-ss-ee ii-tt ss-hh-oo-uu-ll-dd.
The really long answer is: JDBC is portable. ODBC isn't... It's yet another Microshite-locked-down psuedo-open technology... So go implement an ODBC driver (in pure java please) if the concept gives you wood.
Or just just use the jdbc/odbc bridge (if you must) like the rest of us.

Maximum number of connections for MS Access with JDBC
Hi guys,
does anyone know about the maximum no. of connections that MS Access can have with JDBC...MS Access has not limit. It doesn't work that way.
There is certainly going to be some resource limit however, if nothing else then memory will eventually run out. -

RegardsYour AP-manager and management interfaces is mapped to port 1:
ap-manager 1 80 10.41.80.2 Static Yes No
only APs connected to port 1 will work.
You need to either use a switch and keep port 1 connected to it while APs join through the switch or you need to create a new ap-manager interface. not even sure if you can map it to the same port or different port! not even sure about the management interface!! it is mapped to port 1 and should be reachable anyway. it is a mess!!! have you read the best practice document that I put the link for earlier?
So you need eventually a switch to fix your issue. direclty connected APs are not recommended.
I am still not knowing how Cisco provided such swtich that is supposed to handle direclty connected Aps while it does not provide a smooth way to do so.
Use a switch and everything supposed to be fine.

I feel like I should know the answer to this. I can't believe it is a hard question.
What is the direct connect method for transfering photos from my macbook pro to my iphone without using iTunes syncronization? (iow: a simple photo copy from mac to iphone?)
Easy? Right?
Just plug my iphone in to a mac and copy a photo from the mac to my iphone.
I don't have internet access - I can't email it, or mobileme it, or dropbox it.iTunes. Other than that there is no direct method. However, do try the iPhone forums.

Serious problem of jdbc-mysql connectivity using tomcat
hi everybody
i m in serious problem since last 15-20 days. i m trying hard to make the connection jdbc-mysql using tomcat with the help of a jsp test page but every time i am facing almost the similar probems listed below in detail:
to make sure that the jdrivers's .jar (mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar) available for such connections working fine i have tried the above said connection without using tomcat....which is working fine...for this i have created a dummy database with a dummy table ..and written some queries in the .java file of my code which upon running inserts the specified values in the defined(dummy) database.
this is the confirmation that the classpath etc..are ok in regard to the mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar
now i have placed a copy of this .jar file in to the commons/lib directory of the tomcat web server(which is suppossed to be the place for such external jars)
after doing so i have followed 2 methods :
method 1st:........
i have made aone more jar file from the following .java file....
import javax.naming.*;
import javax.sql.*;
import java.sql.*;
public class TestSQLLoad
String user = "Not Connected";
String pwd = "no pwd";
int id = -1;
public void init() {
try{
Context ctx = new InitialContext();
if(ctx == null ) {
throw new Exception("Boom - No Context");
DataSource ds = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/TestDB");
if (ds != null) {
Connection conn = ds.getConnection();
if(conn != null) {
user = "Got Connection "+conn.toString();
Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
String q = "select name, password, id from user";
ResultSet rst = stmt.executeQuery(q);
if(rst.next()) {
user=rst.getString(1);
pwd=rst.getString(2);
id = rst.getInt(3);
conn.close();
}catch(Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
public String getUser() {
return user;
public String getPassword() {
return pwd;
public int getID()
return id;
after compiling it at the cmd prompt i made a .jar file from the .class of it and named it MySQLLoad.jar...then i placed it also in to the commons/lib directory where the mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar was already placed.
then i have changed the server.xml and web.xml files from the conf directory of the tomcat as given here:
server.xml

after all this i have taken a jsp page whose code is here:
(the mysql database used is named as "testdb" and the table name is "user" which is having fields name,password and id)
<html>
<head>
<title>DB Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<%
TestSQLLoad tst = new TestSQLLoad ( );
tst.init();
%>
<h2>Results</h2>
User <%= tst.getUser() %>
Pwd <%= tst.getPassword() %>
Id <%= tst.getID() %>
</body>
</html>
and placed it in to the Tomcat 5.5\webapps\tomcat-docs\testdb directory and saved as test-db.jsp
when i run this page on the browser i get a lot may errors stating
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP

Generated servlet error:

javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:802)
note The full stack trace of the root cause is available in the Apache Tomcat/5.5.4 logs.
AND NOW WHEN just to get rid of such errords i try to include a statement
<%@ page import="pkg.TestSQLLoad" %> in the jsp page code (and also place the MySQLLoad.class file in a folder called pkg and place it in the same directory where the jsp page is )and make it look like
<html>
<head>
<%@ page import="pkg.TestSQLLoad" %>
<title>DB Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<%
TestSQLLoad tst = new TestSQLLoad ( );
tst.init();
%>
<h2>Results</h2>
User <%= tst.getUser() %>
Pwd <%= tst.getPassword() %>
Id <%= tst.getID() %>
</body>
</html>
now when i run it i get the following errors:
exception
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP

in response to the above error i have even tried placing the MySQLLoad.class directly in the testdb folder along with the jsp page without keeping it in a package named pkg and then importing directly as <@page import="MySQLLoad" %>
that too gave me the following errors

and if i do not use the statement <%@ page import="MySQLLoad"%> then also i get the errors like

An error occurred at line: 11 in the jsp file: /testdb/test-db.jsp

THE 2nd Method:
in my second method i did the same changes in the web.xml and server.xml
then i took a jsp page with the following code:
<%@ page import="javax.sql.*,java.sql.*,javax.naming.*,com.mysql.jdbc.*" %>
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

if (rset.next()){

JDBC Receiver Adapter to MS Access from Unix.
Hi experts,
I am trying to connect to MS Access Database and have the communication channel config as per this weblog:
/people/sameer.shadab/blog/2005/10/24/connecting-to-ms-access-using-receiver-jdbc-adapter-without-dsn
My driver is -->> sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
My connection is -->> jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=/windowsservername/xxx/Lookup.mdb
My Adapter Monitor gives me this exception:
Error when attempting to get processing resources: com.sap.aii.af.service.util.concurrent.ResourcePoolException: Unable to create new pooled resource: DriverManagerException: Cannot establish connection to URL 'jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=/windowsservername/xxx/Lookup.mdb': java.lang.NullPointerException
The database is in Windows system and XI (SP20) is in Unix system.
Do I need to install an ODBC driver in the Unix server? Do I need to set up a data source of ODBC for MS Access Driver?
Any idea?
Thanks,
Jose.First of all your XI system (UNIX) has to have the proper driver for the MS access installed in the system. You need to follow some steps in SDM to install the same. Pls take help of XI Basis for this.
Second, once you install the driver get the connection string from the MS Access DB admin. Pls note the connection string should have proper IP (or domain name).
pls reward points if helpful. -

Problem with JDBC ODBC connectivity
I am trying to connect to MS access database with jsp page. This is sample from my js page :
String SUN_DRIVER = "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver";
Class.forName(SUN_DRIVER);
String aDataSourceName = "puneet";
String url = "jdbc:odbc:" + aDataSourceName;
Connection con;
con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:puneet","","");
The last line gives me the follwoing error :
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified
puneet is name of my datasource and it points to my .mbd file.
I dont have anyusername or passwords for this daatsource.
I am using Tomcat/4.1.18-LE and jdk1.4
I have also added rt.jar in the classpath
pls help
pg4Hi pg4,
May be your dsn is not pointing to .mdb file. Check it by putting your mdb file right where your code is and then user following syntax which is called dsn-less connection. It helps you to connect to the target mdb file with out any need of dsn.
String url = "jdbc:odbc:;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; DBQ=yourDBFile.mdb";

How to switch b/t wireless & direct connection
My Ibook is happily printing wirelessly to a Canon Pixma ip3000 but I can not access the printer utility. I was going to try connecting directly into my Ibook's USB but I'm not sure how to make the switch. Just plugging it in doesn't work. Is there some setting I have to change if it was previously using Airport? I just want the direct connection occasionally and I do want to mess up my Airport connection so I can go back when I'm done.
ChristyAdd the printer twice in the Printer Setup Utility, once as the Airport printer and once as a USB printer.
Then the utility should work when you are plugged in via USB.

Direct Connectivity to systems source
Please i have a question:
Should the OWB Client (Design component) have direct connection to the system sources, to import metadata, or the import will be executed from server_Repository(design), in this case only the server_side must be connected to the source.
(I read the paper Oracle warehouse Builder 10g Architecture, it discusses about metabase : is this component resides in server or in server(design) ???
Thanks for your helpHi,
If you have checked the architecture of OWB you've seen the following 3 'environments':
- design time repository (holds model information);
- runtime repository (holds runtime information on deployment and execution);
- target schema (your actual datawarehouse).
The OWB Client interacts with the design time repository.
From within the OWB Client you can start the Deployment Manager (using the so-called Runtime Access User), all things happening here are stored in the runtime repository.
With your OWB Client you need access to the design repository, thus access to the database where this resides (since you have to specifically log in).
From this design repository database you need access to all databases that are used as source for your datawarehouse (via databaselinks).
Hope this helped.
Regards, Patrick
