JFileChooser causes hang

I have written a Java application that I run on Unix and PC. In PC (Windows 2000, JVM version 1.4.1_01), sometimes my application will hang at the following line:
fileChooser = new JFileChooser(System.getProperty("user.dir")+
System.getProperty("file.separator");
If I reboot my PC, it will work again. But I would like to know the real reason. Is there a bug in Java Hotspot?
BTW, it never has any problem in Solaris Unix.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
do you are sure to get installed the JRE 1.4.1 correctly ?
It looks like an incompatibility of the DLL's of your operating system (Windows NT ?) with the JRE.

  • External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder

    External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder.
    I have an 2008 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66hz, 10GB Mem, ATI HD4870 with 4 internal 1 TB Drives. I have 3 external HDDs (2 USB + 1 FW400). The 2 USB HDDs are for Time Machine and backups.
    The external FW HD is a 1TB bootable clone of my Internal 1 TB boot HDD.
    I have 2 problems ... somethimes when using finder or opening a folder, copying files, starting or quiting a program, I get the spinning beach ball that seems to hang the Mac.
    I power off the external FW HDD and everything starts to work. I get an error about the device going offline, I then power the FW HDD back on and all is good.
    It seems the external FW Drive tends to hang the system. It occurs pretty frequently.
    Any recommendations?
    The other issue is that when I use finder to go to a folder, I seem to have to wait for all these drive to spin up. You can hear them all start whirring.
    is there a way to remove that lag?

    If you recently moved to Snow Leopard you might look for new firmware for your external drive. I would also get DiskWarrior and run that on the external and consider programs like Drive Genius. You might also back it up and wipe it and restore the data. After that I'd consider looking at a new external.
    Sleeping drives that take time to spin up after waking....I'd like to learn how to stop that myself. Be sure the Energy Saver in System Preferences is set to not put drives to sleep when possible. Even then my drives will go to sleep and I have up to 6 external added at times and they take quite a while to all spin up. I've never found a way to prevent that.
    BTW...external USB drives on a MacPro? Really? Even for backup....

  • Caps Lock Keyboard "G" key causes hanging notes

    When I use Logic Pro 8s Caps Lock Keyboard the "G" key causes hanging notes. The only way I've found to end the hanging note is to start and stop the sequencer. This behaviour happens when auditioning instrument sounds and in Record or Record Ready mode.
    It's not a mechanical problem, as the "G" key doesn't cause multiple entries in text documents etc when pressed and released quickly. It only seems to be misbehaving inside of Logic itself, when using the Caps Lock Keyboard.
    Is anyone else having this trouble?
    Does anyone know why it happens and/or how to fix it?

    can someone help please?
    I opened up a new song, blank, and the caps lock keyboard worked fine.
    seems to be a problem with older songs, which leads me to think maybe its a setting i have changed, ie when playing with uc33 midi contoller.
    thankyou

  • [Solved] Black screen after startx, GDM causes hang at boot

    So I followed the install guide and and have tried many google workarounds for the problem but none have worked. I am running a Toshiba Satellite e500 with Intel i5 which I assume comes with HD4000 graphics. I installed the  vesa drivers along with the xf86-video-intel drivers.  First startx caused the screen to stay black so I installed the GMD and then starting the computer would hang just after GRUB, and I cannot do anything further.... Any ideas?

    Try disabling GDM in systemd.  Boot to a console and log in.  If things are still working, start GDM from the console.  If that fails, switch too another console, log in, and kill GDM.  There now may be useful information on the original console.  Were it my system I would actually log in from to the console, start a tmux session, flip to a second console, log in, attach to the tmux session, and then start GDM.  While it is starting, flip back to the original console and watch the telemetry go by in the other tmux screen.

  • Self join on dictionary view causes hanging

    Hi,
    I want to find out all tables which are referenced by a referential integrity constraint. For that I issue the following statement:
    select rc.TABLE_NAME as REF_TABLE_NAME
    from USER_CONSTRAINTS c, USER_CONSTRAINTS rc
    WHERE c.R_CONSTRAINT_NAME = rc.CONSTRAINT_NAME AND c.CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'R' AND c.DELETE_RULE = 'NO_ACTION';
    This causes the session to hang. Why?
    Are there any other possibilities to solve this?
    many thanks,
    Balazs

    Thank you for your answers!
    I tried with another client (SQL Worksheet) and I realized, the query runs, but very slow. It takes about 30 sec to fetch three rows.

  • Loaded resaved iDVD6 proj from orig iDVD5 causes hang.

    Up front - I've already applied the recent updates to the iLife suite. In another thread I got worked out how to get iDVD to open and actually import an iDVD5 project. However, now when I save this project and try to reopen it, iDVD6 hangs. If I kill the .plist and the /user/library/application support/idvd/themes folder, clear trash and reboot, I can get the project to load. However, this is a tedious process to follow each time.
    The projects (there are two) are both multi-chapter picture slide shows w/ music applied. When I upgrade to iLife'06, the iPhoto app did some moving of files and subsequent changes have moved the images as well. However, when running the import it asked to search for them, and found them. Now the new project is saved and will only open if started from a fresh .plist. If I start a fresh .plist, create a blank project, save it, and quit/restart iDVD, it works fine.
    Any ideas? My wife put a lot of work into those and I'm trying to save the work of having to recreate all the slideshows and such. Thanks,
    Mike

    Is there a reason a new update to QT would not recognize the motion menus in iDVD?
    I have another thread going:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=484048&tstart=0
    and am wondering if this is causing my problem also. I just tried to burn a non motion menu project to a disc image and it worked fine. I can kind of navigate my current one, but it hangs when I go to render the menus or even turn on the motion previewer.

  • Changing style sheets causes hang (ID CS2 Windows)

    I have several 25-page (or so) files that are part of a book file. I'm trying to change the tabs in some of the style sheets but when I make the changes within the style sheet dialog window and close it, InDesign hangs. I've let it go for 15 minutes just in case it's working, but it shouldn't take anywhere near that long. It also hangs if I try to delete a character style from the palette. Actually, any style change I've tried to make causes the same hang.
    Any suggestions? I know it's not RAM because it works in other files (I have 4GB).
    Thanks...

    Might be a font problem. Anything different about these files?
    Try exporting to .inx and resaving the result as a new .indd. Replace the original in the book with the new one and see if that helps, too.

  • ITunes causing hang on shut down. Help!

    iTunes 11 has been causing my Macbook Pro 15.4" running Lion to hang at shutdown.  I would open up iTunes and it would not respond so I would have to force quit it. Then I proceed to shut my mac down (I always quit all running applications and uncheck the 'reopen windows'), where it continues to hang with that grey spinning wheel. I've left it for over 10 minutes and it still hangs, so I'd have to do a hard shut down. This doesn't happen all the time, but it's becoming quite often now. Please help!

    If you forced quit iTunes before shut down then that is not what is causing you the problem. Reboot to the Lion Recovery Disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utility.

  • Calendar Agent keeps crashing every minute causing hang ups (Beachballs)

    Hi All-
    Config:
    MacBook Pro 8,2 (early 2011)
    8Gb RAM/ 1Tb SSD/ 10.10.2/ 1000BaseT ethernet (to cable modem with speeds > 8Mbps to dslreports.com)
    This machine was a dog with its OEM 750Gb HD so I replaced it with an 850 EVO 1Tb.  And now despite Yosemite, it screams..well for a week or two it did...
    Despite the new install (but I did - probably mistakenly - use my Time Machine back up to reload our user accounts) of Yosemite (yuck).  While the machine is now moving at about 10x faster than its prior incarnation (before SSD upgrade), I noticed that Calendar kept hanging and causing the machine to slow down only days after this new install.
    I included the ever repeating console messages below with the crash and its craziness below.
    I am going now to rip out all my calendar preferences on this account and caches and see if that helps, but this is kinda nuts.
    If anyone has any ideas, let me know please!
    Thanks!
    Yosemite is killing me:

    I solved my problem for now (see bellow).
    I think its not some users problem. If its happening to some users (we dont know how many read but dont write in this discussion groups, we are the visible part of the iceberg!). This kind of stuff shouldnt happen. If its happening than its a bug, and is also happening to me.
    I have one ipad2 and one iphone4, and having same problems with icloud.
    Cant use email and contacts after icloud and cant also turn them off in icloud.
    see the emails "loading" forever and the contacts and bookmarks "turning off" all night long and nothing happening.
    Found this in another site that helped me, but I think I will keep email and contacts off, out of the icloud, until I understand what is going on.
    I just had the same problem . I went onto my iPad and iPhone 4(updated to ios5),
    Go to settings
    Select iCloud
    Delete account
    You can choose to save or delete contacts, calendars and reminders
    Reboot your device
    Then add iCloud account by following steps 1-3 then use your apple ID and password to set up
    Turn everything in iCloud back on. In a few moments, you should be up and running
    I turned the email and contacts off (this time I was abble to do it) and now my old emails (gmail) and contacts are working.

  • Flash Player Causing Hang With Most sites

    Hi,
    I've been having problems with my flash player plugin and I feel like I've tried everything to fix it. Most sites that require the flash plugin for videos etc. cause firefox to hang. I know that flash is creating the problem because I can browse the web just fine if i disable to plugin. Any help  on the subject would be immensly appreciated.

    Hi Paul, thanks for the information. Since you are using the Mac, the best information that I can give you is all on this

    I hope it will be helpful to you. The only thing I would say is that the Uninstaller for a beta is here:

  • JFileChooser causes "java.exe - Application Error"

    Hi,
    When I'm closing an JFileChooser dialog (by e.g. pressing ok or cancel) a second or so later my JVM terminates with the error message "java.exe - Application Error. The instruction at "0*6d0ea46e" referenced a memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to treminate the program".
    I turned on verbose output from the JVM and the last printout was:
    [Loaded javax.swing.Autoscroller from C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\rt.jar]
    [Dynamic-linking native method sun.awt.windows.WComponentPeer.removeNativeDropTarget ... JNI]

    [Loaded java.awt.EventDispatchThread$StopDispatchEvent from C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\rt.jar]
    [Dynamic-linking native method sun.awt.windows.WToolkit.shutdown ... JNI]
    No exception is shown.
    I have uninstall all old JVMs and reinstalled JDK 5.0. This does not help.
    This simple program causes the termination of the JVM:
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    System.out.println("0");
    JFileChooser fileChooser = new JFileChooser();
    System.out.println("1");
    int result = -2;
    try {
    result = fileChooser.showOpenDialog(null);
    } catch (HeadlessException e1) {
    e1.printStackTrace();
    System.out.println("result " + result);
    try {
    Thread.sleep(5000);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    // TODO Auto-generated catch block
    e.printStackTrace();
    System.out.println("2");
    I receive the printout "result" but not "2".

    No, this is very bad. Any time you see a message like this mentioning a memory address, it means that java, not you, has crashed. There's no way for you to fix this. The only thing you can try is to work around it.
    My suggestions:
    1. Report it to Sun. Make sure you include your system info (processor, memory, computer manufacturer) and what version of java you're using
    2. Try downloading and installing a different version of java

  • Need mouse disable only - moving & clicking mouse during runtime caused 'hanging the program'

    Hi all...
    I have a VI program that controls a DAQ card which acquires up to 250kHz. During acquisition, the CPU usage is at 100% and any mouse movement causes program hanging.
    I'd like to disable the mouse. I have found about using Call Library Function Node to a WINAPI function BlockInput. But it blocks keyboard input as well, which is need in the program to halt the running when required.
    Is there another way to go about it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    D Hing

    I think you may be going about solving your problem the wrong way. Moving the mouse shouldn't kill your program.. I routinely write acquisition software that acquires and logs data at high sample rates. I'm guessing that moving the mouse causes an error to pop up indicating that the sample buffer has overflowed, and killing your acquisition. There are things that you can do to prevent that from occurring. Let me know if I'm going down the wrong track here, or if you are running your program on a very old computer.
    Just guessing, but I suspect that it is not the acquisition that is sucking up your cpu cycles, but maybe displaying the data on the screen. If you can live without seeing the data come in, you may be able to cut the processor usage by 50% or more. If you do want to see the data, there is a good thread on Max/Min decimation in here somewhere that discusses things that you can do to improve the performance of drawing a graph. Also, the buffer size for you acquisition can be increased, which will give your program more time to catch up when it falls behind (when it's paying attention to the UI, for example). And if you aren't doing this already, I suggest a Producer-Consumer architecture for your vi. The acquisition occurs in the producer loop, and logging and display occur in the consumer loop.
    Good luck!

  • FTP Functionality in Finder causes Hang

    On my brand new (and software updated) Leopard build, visiting two FTP locations in a row causes Finder to hang and become unresponsive. The only option is to go to Force Quit and click 'Relaunch'.
    To recreate this bug, I clicked on two SRTM data file FTP links from within Google Earth. The first loads and begins downloading. Clicking on the second link hangs Finder.
    I think these are just the same as hyperlinks in any other program, but to recreate exactly, the Google Earth overlay I was using is one for Shuttle Topography data, and is at http://www.ambiotek.com/srtm - clicking on the green triangles shows you a number of ftp and http links to choose to download. Clicking on two of these in a row causes Finder to hang.
    Does anyone know how bugs like this should be filed properly?

    I made some comments in another thread about providing feedback and filing bugs with Apple; maybe that will help you:

    I've found that joining ADC and filing bugs through that forum is the best way to get attention. I've had many email exchanges with Apple engineers because of bugs filed in this way...

  • Streaming video causes hang

    Hello. My 15" Macbook Pro started hanging when playing streaming video. Early on it worked fine, and then occasionally Hulu would cause it to lock up, mostly in full screen mode. Now it's at the point where just about any streaming video in any browser whether full screen or not will cause a hang with seconds or at most a few minutes. The screen will go black and the last few miliseconds of audio will play in a loop. After forcing a shutdown the crash reporter comes up on restart, usually with a similar backtrace. Skype will also immediately crash the Mac. Non-streaming video plays fine. Anyone come across this?

    How large is your HD AND _how much space do you have left?_
    Make sure you have the latest versions for your OS of the following:
    RealPlayer
    Flip4Mac
    VLC Media Player
    Perian (AVI and FLV support)
    Adobe Flash Player Software
    Repair permissions & restart your computer after the installations.
    If you already have the mentioned players then do the following if you have not already done so:
    Boot up from your install DVD and run *"Repair Disk"* from the Utility menu.
    Boot up from your Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
    Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
    Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
    Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
    If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.
    "Oh and also, I have the red light in the headphone port which I cannot get rid of,"
    Do a forum search for the solutions. This issue has been posted here numerous times.

  • PS CC (since JAN 2014 update) Layer-mask editing causes hangs/crashes

    ONLY since JAN 2014 update, PS CC has been hanging/crashing when I paint/edit a layer mask. All may be well at first (or not), but suddenly the display of the mask (or mask overlay on the layer itself, as shown when hitting backslash key) is not shown in full but renders in s-l-o-w-l-y in rectilinear pieces <snapshot below was taken before video card upgraded but is still typical of what I mean>. When I view Windows' Task Manager for PS, I see my CPUs are each working at their upper limits (up to 80+-90+%), varying only by a few points, over a VERY long time... which could be MANY minutes. OR the System has decided PS is Not Responding.
    In any case, whenever this happens, it means in all practicality PS CC is not working, so I either kill it or it's crashed.
    Now, here's the thing: that VERY file, can immediately be opened in PS CS6 (which I have fortunately kept installed on my computer), and the mask will be as I thought it should be, and I can edit it as I always could, just fine! So it's obviously a PS CC thing, and I do NOT recall this happening prior to the JAN update. It is still a problem after the two subsequent updates.
    I have not been able to determine the specific instances when this happens, as it seems to happen whenever I am editing a mask, no matter what size/softness/color brush, what magnification, what view mode, many or few layers, big or small file, etc.
    I did upgrade my NVIDIA card (from GeForce GTX 260 [with current driver] to GTX660), just in case it was a factor (maybe kept it from crashing as fast? hard to tell... but it's still an unworkable problem). You can see from my Sys Info shown here from the PS CC Help menu  that it should be more than sufficient for any PS CC task, and it's running the latest driver:

    I work on digital-photography files, and use a layer mask in almost every file, so this relatively-recent bug is a big PITA, having to switch back and forth between CS6 and CC!
    Until there's a fix... is there a way to roll-back my PS CC version to BEFORE the JAN 15, 2014 update?

    I am not qualified to comment on technical issues; I'm just a user whose son in IT is my 'technical support department.' (But he's not much of a PS user.)
    I'm pretty sure, however, that all my Prefs were set to the same things BEFORE the Jan 16, 2014 PS CC update as after (unless the update itself changed something I was unaware of... the settings APPEARED to be the same but I can't easily locate my notes of what my Prefs were from long ago).
    And they were the same as the PS CS6 I have had installed on this same system for a very long time, with older video card with older driver, with newer driver; newer video card with newest driver, etc. Yet after that CC update, CC has not (until this workaround) worked re 'the masking bug' for me, yet CS6 has always worked just the same.
    So I conclude that the only variable (other than the video card upgrade I did in an attempt to solve this and of course those Windows auto-updates) in this scenario IS something to do with PS *CC*, and after Jan 16, 2014.
    As for restarting the machine vs. restarting PS, well, PS is the major player of my system, so when I shut that (and LR) down, I might as well 'clean things up' by Restarting. BTW, I am in the habit of closing and reopening PS (CC or CS6) whenever I finish with a file and load another, in order to get back some of that memory which PS never seems to want to let go. (This is not new to the latest versions, I think. My son says it's a 'memory hog'? ;-) ) I track its memory use in Windows' Task Manager and find that seems to let it 'refresh' itself. (See, I told you I'm not a technical person. ;-) ) But I do not think this has anything to do with the bug. Just a quirk of PS. Like when a tool goes all wonky (for example, its little icon becomes just a 'plus' sign even though the tool is still performing correctly, it's telling me, I think, that it would like to be restarted. And that makes it feel all better... I mean, tool icon reappears.)
    Anyway... it's up to Adobe to figure out IF and what may be wrong with PS CC -- it still doesn't work for me as I had it configured at first, and I think it should, right? -- and to fix that... PLEASE. SOON.
