JFileChooser ignores home directory
Hallo,
I have a little problem with JFileChooser. I need a JFileChooser that only has access to certain drives, has disabled 'create new directory' and doesn't alow to choose the default home directory of a user. The first two things are no problem, because I wrote my own class extending the FileSystemView class. The third thing also should be no problem, because I overwrote the method 'public File getHomeDirectory()' to do what I like, but the JFileChooser seems to ignore the Directory I give back if the above method is called.
Does anyone have a idea why it ignores the new home directory or is this a bug in the JDK. I use JDK 1.4.0_03.
Thanks in advance
Oliver
Hi,
I tried with the Simplest way of creating the subclass of JFileChooser and overriden the setCurrentDirectory().
The method setCurrentDirectory() gets called everytime the directory is set onto the File Look in Combo box.

AD mobile account with local home directory
I basically have the same question as this post:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=696367
I have set up Tiger workstations to authenticate to AD, I am forcing a local home dir. Everything works great. I want to do the same thing for Tiger laptop users with mobile accounts. The problem is that OS X creates a second home directory outside of /Users based on attributes from my AD schema. Just like with the non-mobile users, I want to ignore all home dir attributes from AD and just use the user's home dir that is in /Users. So the question is, how can you use a mobile account and force a local home dir with Apple's AD plugin??????Yes, I know how to click buttons in the gui, that does not fix the issue. The issue is that the Active Directory schema at my company includes extended attributes from the RFC 2307 schema. Apple's AD plugin does not know how to handle this extended schema especially when using mobile accounts.
Apple's AD plugin reads these unix attributes from AD and thinks it knows what to do but ends up causing more problems then if there were no unix attributes at all.
Since this post, I have opened a ticket with Apple. They were able to recreate the problem in their lab with their AD server. The only work around is to create a custom ActiveDirectory.plist file that forces the Mac to ignore what AD is telling it.
This solution works unless the ActiveDirectory.plist file is deleted or corrupted. This problem will only become worse once Microsoft includes all of the RFC 2307 schema in their next service pack of Win 2003 server. -
[SOLVED] gem installs packages only to home directory
Hello!
I need help. I have installed ruby and I'm trying to install it packages. But I have a problem.
All gems I try to install have placed in HOME/.gem directory. Myself home, if I install from my account, or root home, if I use sudo.
gem help install
This command shows in "Defaults" section that install dir is "/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1". But during installation it ignores this. And even option "--install-dir" have no effect. Packages was installed into HOME directory anyway.
Thank you.
Last edited by zexar (2012-05-23 13:44:48)I tried to reinstall whole ruby package and it shows after install
The default location of gem installs is $HOME/.gem/ruby
Add the following line to your PATH if you plan to install using gem
$(ruby -rubygems -e "puts Gem.user_dir")/bin
If you want to install to the system wide location, you must either:
edit /etc/gemrc or run gem with the --no-user-install flag.
I corrected gemrc and now all working. -
Home directory for my documents
Hello,
I am writing an international program which reads in files placed under the "My Documents" directory of the users home directory.
I can get access to the homedirectory using System.getProperty("user.home"). But depending on the language, the "My Documents" is having a different name.
Is there a property that gives direct access to this directory?
KR,
JanHello,
I suppose it is too late for helping nnv14vv but can help others.
* Constructs a <code>JFileChooser</code> pointing to the user's
* default directory. This default depends on the operating system.
* It is typically the "My Documents" folder on Windows, and the
* user's home directory on Unix.
public JFileChooser() {
this((File) null, (FileSystemView) null);
So you can get "My Documents" path using:
new JFileChooser().getCurrentDirectory();
I am sure that must be another way to get it without using JFileChooser() but haven't found it.

Users refused SSH connection of home directory server.
I have an odd situation when using SSH connections for secure FTP file
access on my NW6.5 servers.
I've got two main data servers. Both are identical in setup: NW6.5SP8/eDir
8.8SP5 VM's running on identical Dell PE1950's attached to a Hitachi SAN
array.
One server hosts the users' home folders, the other holds data shared across
the enterprise.
I have a third data server at a remote campus.
With the server that hosts the user's home folders, I've several accounts
that are not able to connect. The server logs indicate a failed password.
That same user, however, can log in successfully to either the server that
holds shared data or the server at the remote site.
Due to the nature of how Novell implements SSH, once they've logged in,
they're attached to their home folder on the server that will not allow them
direct connection.
Since this issue does not affect all users, I don't understand where the
issue lies.
The sshd_config file on both servers are identical.
Not sure if it's applicable to this issue, but SDIDIAG reports no problems
on either server.

In the past I've collected iMonitor traces, but could find anything concrete
that points to a system issue.
That said, I can't remember what all I set up in the trace configuration
beyond NMAS and LDAP, so I may have been looking for the wrong thing.

Chmod -R 700 on home directory doesn't restrict other users
Hi All,
I have several users sharing a mac. I wanted to secure my home directory so I opened a terminal and typed:
cd /users
chmod -R 700 alandye
a ls -l confirmed permissions recursively changed for my home directory and subsidiary directories and files had been set to og-rwx.
Then, I logged in as a different user (tknoble) , and tried to access the directory (alandye)through the finder that I had just restricted permissions on, and viola, I could read any file in there.
This doesn't happen on Unix or Linux, why is it happening here? I tried restricting account tknoble to non-administrative, but got the same problem.
Net/net, finder seems to be ignoring the posix file permissions.
Can anyone explain why this is happening?
thanks,
Alan... Still, the ACL issue and the open default permissions including the default umask on the Mac has me perplexed. I've used ACL's for years as a system manager on mainframes and other secure enterprise unix platforms, generally through a central administrative console like RACF or ACF2 on the mainframe. It identifies all ACL's on the system and allows you to administer them centrally. The idea that my mac has system generated ACL's that are only accessible through chmod on a file by file basis and are inherently set with open permissions seems like a bad security setup.
First, the default permissions and umask values have been typical of Unix systems since I started using them back in '85. And even in the Family situation, allowing family members the ability to share information is not uncommon, and can be frustrating to the family if everything is totally locked up.
Plus your complaints about ACLs, it just a side issue, as the /User/username folder should have only had an ACL that prevented accidental deletion. Your real problem was cached Finder information. So this ACL discussion is just a tangential issue.
Second, a Mac is a mass market consumer personal computer, with a strong leaning towards 1 person being the owner and user of that computer. It is not typically sold as a Mainframe replacement. Having tightly locked down, no access default permissions and umask just makes life extremely difficult for the mass market consumer.
Applying Mainframe rules to a Mac is only going to frustrate you.
As for having an ACL admin tool besides chmod, for the most part consumers are not aware of ACLs, they are used sparingly on the Mac, and as such it is not something Apple has felt a need to invest in. Maybe there is a 3rd party utility that will provide this service for you.
While investigating this I did discover a similar problem with a RAID array I have attached with similar file permission problems. chmod -R 700 on directories does set the permission bits correctly, but again, finder bypasses them and allows access for other users, even after a reboot. Apparently, according to this http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20020418091450891 the externally attached drives ignore ownership by default.
Again, the Mac is a mass market consumer item. Just about every external drive on a Mac is a detachable device, which can be moved around to other Macs, etc... (especially USB thumb drives, SD cards, etc...). Having these devices default to strict security would again frustrate the mass consumer Mac user, when all they want to do is get their pictures off of the SD card, or move files between 2 computers, etc...
My point is that the defaults Apple has selected are targeted to the mass consumer Mac user. Not the data center mainframe user.

No longer can point home directory to external drive
I am having a problem where my Mac stopped using the correct users' home directories on an external Firewire drive. It insists on using home directories on the main disk.
First some background: I have two drives. "Drive 1" is inside my Mac Mini and has the operating system on it. "Drive 2" is an external Firewire drive and contains all users' home directories. Some months ago, I moved all the home directories to the external drive using steps similar to what's described on this page. Everything was fine for several months:
http://maczealots.com/articles/home/
My troubles began this week when I unmounted Drive 2 as part of during some troubleshooting I was doing to get an external device to mount. I solved that problem, but since re-connecting Drive 2, it insists on using a home directory on Drive 1 in this location:
/Drive 1/Volumes/Drive 2/Users/user
("Volumes" is a hidden directory.)
The location I want it to use is this (and indeed, this is what is set in the NetInfo Manager):
/Volumes/Drive 2/Users/user
I also noticed in Disk Utility that the mount point for Disk 2 is "/Volumes/Disk 2 1" When it should be "/Volumes/Disk 2" That is, there's an extra "1" at the end of the name. I read else where that the mount point can get messed up when the computer tries to a unmounted disk.
I have already used Disk Utility to repair permissions on Drive 1 (Disk 2) has "ignore permissions" enabled) and to run a "Repair Disk."
mac mini duo-core (intel) Mac OS X (10.4.7)Yes.
You must format your external drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
You can select this drive on the iMovie import screen.
For events already in your Event Library, you must move them from within iMovie. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK and command-drag to the external disk icon in the Event Library List. -
JFileChooser - change default directory
Hi all, I've tried reading the tuts for jfilechooser but still am quite lost as how to change the default directory. I'm trying to change the directory to where the .java file is located. Thanks in advance!
JFileChooser Javadoc
public JFileChooser(File currentDirectory)
Constructs a JFileChooser using the given File as the path. Passing in a null file causes the file chooser to point to the user's default directory. This default depends on the operating system. It is typically the "My Documents" folder on Windows, and the user's home directory on Unix.
Parameters:
currentDirectory - a File object specifying the path to a file or directory -
Problem with user home directory redirection on OS X
It appears that the Authorware 7.01 runtime gets confused
when home directory redirection is used on Mac OS X to redirect a
user's directory to the network.
I suspect it is a problem with the path to the Application
Support folder where Authorware stores its .rec files.
That happens is that JumpFileReturn returns to the start of
the piece, rather then returning to where the jump was performed.
As anyone else seen this? Is there any workaround?
On Windows one can setup and ini file to tell Authorware
where to store temporary files. Is there any such equivalent on
Mac?I'm not sure of the process on macs that match the use of the
ini file, but
the goal was always identical operation on both platforms so
it's very
likely that the ini file is read and interpreted in the same
manner.
It seems that the 'initial' location of the current records
folder is the
one that's messed up. The .rec file is created on the local
machine rather
than the redirected one. I can only guess that either the
home folder isn't
redirected until after the first AW piece starts or the
initial setting is
being set to a 'default' location for the user rather than
asking the system
what the current location is. A solution might be to create a
"launcher"
application with Authorware designed to start up and jump to
what is
currently your startup piece. This way the RecordsLocation
should be changed
to the network location and you can ignore the original rec
file since
you'll never return to that first location.

Mail wont open says home directory is full. HELP?
I dont know what happend but i restarted my powerbook today and when i got back to the desktop and tried launching mail it gives me the following message.
MAIL CANNOT UPDATE YOUR MAILBOXES BECAUSE YOUR HOME DIRECTORY IS FULL.
You must free up space in your home folder before using mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume.
what happend to cause this and what can i do to fix it.
ThanksIf your hard drive has at least 5GB of free space available, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Afterwards, copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import all mailboxes available in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
Select OK and allow the import process to complete and a new Envelope Index file will be created automatically by Mail within the Mail folder.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and are available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and the old Envelope Index file from the Desktop.
This should resolve the problem. -
FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory
Hardware
Server
Mac Mini Mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.1.2, OpenDirectory ON, HomeDirectory: /Volumes/HomeFolders/Users
Client
iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012, OS X 10.9.5, MobileAccount
Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing. I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created. I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync. I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them. The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file. I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process. I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window (triple-click, copy, and paste):
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
I just don't want to have to delete a lock file - which has a purpose - in order to use firefox simultaneously from two locations on the network - where the home directory, i.e. .mozilla directory - is located
You need to use two separate profiles if you want to have two Firefox instances open at the same time.

Need to write/delete a file (token) to/from user's home directory
I want to build a class that runs on Windows/Unix clients. It needs to get to users' home directories (both environments) and write the token on login, delete it on logout.
What method (or code snipet) would get a user's home directory?
What method (or code snipet) would write/delete a file from it?
Thanks muchEven if you are not writing an Applet, this is applicable. But I thot if you were, you might need this.

Home directory is not being backed up in Time Machine
Problem: It turns out my home directory does not have any backups in Time Machine for the last year. I've never received any error message indicating it wasn't doing the full backup.
Goal: I'd like to get Time Machine to back up my home folder (which contains 100% of the content I care about) again, ideally in a way where I can keep my history from the last time it backed up successfully.
How I found out:
- I opened Time Machine and realized all the "pink bars" were dimmed all the way back up to Sept. 2011 when I navigated to my home folder or any folder within it.
- I cloned a file within my home folder, did a manual Time Machine back up, opened Time Machine and verified that the backup volume did not contain the cloned file.
- I did this again while watching the Console and verified that it did not make a large enough backup to include the cloned file.
- I explored all the backups in Finder and realized that indeed all the backups that corresponded to the dimmed pink bars in Time Machine had no home folder.
- I did an "ls -a" in the backup volume in Terminal and realized that it was not the case that the home directory was present but merely hidden.
What I've tried:
- I created a new admin account, logged into that and did a manual Time Machine backup from there. The new account was backed up, while the original home directory still wasn't. This continues to be true in subsequent backups made while logged into the main account.
- I examined the exclusions list in Time Machine preferences. The only items were the backup volume itself and another partition of that external drive I use for other backups, as expected.
- I did a "Full Reset of Time Machine" (http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html), with a reboot before re-enabling Time Machine. The plist file did change to become much simpler, but the home folder is still not being backed up.
Other notes:
- I run Dropbox, and have those contents in a folder one level under the home directory
- I run Git
- The existing backups have only used 500GB or so of a 1TB partition, so it's not filling up.
- I ran Verify Disk in Disk Utility on both my backup volume and the mac's HD. The backup volume appeared OK, but the mac HD was "found corrupt and needs to be repaired". I could boot into the Recovery HD and repair it, but I feel like this is a risk and I'd like to have a working backup before I do that (I don't have another external HD around to make a temporary backup). Could the corrupted drive be the reason Time Machine has been silently skipping the home folder?
- My home folder is named "apple". Might this be a problem? I'd rename it, but that's a risk and I'd like a verified backup before doing that.
- The Time Machine plist file in /Library/Preferences is pretty hard to read in pico, TextEdit, etc (maybe this is normal?)
I've scoured the forums and pondini's very thorough troubleshooting pages to no avail. Please let me know if anyone has ideas. Thanks.Latest update: Bought a new external harddrive, set that up as the new Time Machine volume, but got the exact same results (all but my main user directory are backed up). This is after another Time Machine reset (deleting the .plist), starting up in Safe Mode, and trying to initiate the backup from both the account that doesn't get backed up and another administrator account.
Here is some of the output from the Console when filtering messages for "backupd":
10/5/12 2:51:23.572 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Backup content size: 481.57 GB excluded items size: 11.31 GB for volume Macintosh HD
10/5/12 2:51:23.572 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Found 1437613 files (470.25 GB) needing backup
10/5/12 2:51:23.573 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: 564.3 GB required (including padding), 1.5 TB available
10/5/12 2:51:23.581 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Waiting for index to be ready (100)
10/5/12 3:40:33.297 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Copied 763432 files (21.54 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.
Put the relevant parts in bold. No messages about why it only backed up 21.54GB when it found 470.25GB that needed to get backed up.
Does this make sense to anyone?? -
Home directory is not created and cannot log from client computer
I am trying to set up MacOsX server. I already have another server which is my DNS server. I am trying to create an Open Directory Master server.
Server was updated to 10.4.8 MacOsX from the beginning of existence.
I created couple of users in Open directory domain for testing purposes.
So, the first problem is, that when I am trying to create a user home directory server does not create it and does not give any errors about that. I tried in bash createhomedir utility, it did not work either, again, no error messages.
Another problem:
I set up Open Directory master with LDAP. It was set up correctly, no error messages. At least I did not see any.
The I tried to connect to the server from my client iMac computer which has 10.4.8 MacOsX as well. So I set up LDAP there in Directory services, it was able to find my server and bind to it. Then when I am trying to login with username and password in Open Directory on the server, it does nor recognize it. No error messages in logs as well.
However, if I am trying to use ssh from client machine to connect to Server using the names which are in Open Directory on the server it allows me to do so. But of course it says no home directory defined.
Than you very much for responce! An Open Directory Master requires DNS running somewhere. You could have a scenario involving 4 servers where: DNS is provided by Server A, Server B is a Web & Mail Server, Server C providing FTP Services and Server D providing LDAP services with managed preferences and automounting Home Directories (ODM). In this scenario DNS is provide by Server A and any other server requiring DNS using Server A’s DNS. You could expand this scenario if you wanted and have replica (fallover) servers for Servers A, B C or D, or if you are the frugal sort just one replica server replicating the 4 primary servers. You can do all of this pretty much in 10.4 GUI with some additional configuration using Terminal
Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac OS X (10.4.8)
