JNI, run Java methodes from C++

I'm trying to understand the JNI for a while, but can't realy figure out how to run a java methode from a C++ code.
(I've managed to do the oposit; run a C++ methode from Java, but that is not what I need.)
The thing is that I have a C++ program wich outputs a jpg picture. And I have a Java program wich is using this picture. (Picture size is from 2 - 4KB)
My temparary (not good) solution for making the picture available for the java code is to have the C program save it to a file, and then make the java program read the file once in a while.
What I would like is to have the C++ to call the methode updatePicture(byte[] newJPEG) in my javacode. How do I do this?

Well, you seem to be defining a C program with some imbedded java, or a java program with some native C methods. So which is it?
o If it is a C program, then you have two things to do (with respect to java):
- Start a java JVM.
- During your processing, periodically call into your JVM to process data made available by your C program.
o If it is a java program, then what you want to do -- I guess - is call a native method to start up an asynchronous (C) process, then have that asynchronous
process periodically call back into java to process results.
Overview of JNI (which you need to flesh out with some further study):
o There is the socalled invocation API, which is used to get java started.
o There is the definition of java native methods, which are then implemented in a C library (DLL on Windows), which library is loaded up at runtime by the java program, allowing the native methods to be called.
o There are JNI methods available from C that allow you to look up objects and methods, and invoke those java methods.

    There should be examples of this in the JNI tutorial.
    Also suggest a book: essential JNI by Rob Gordon
    Briefly, what you need is a reference to the JVM. (I assume you have this - either because it was given to you when your C code started the JVM, or because it was passed as an argument to your native method.)
    With the reference, you can look up a class, and look up a method, and call the method.
    What about an object reference?
    o You can call a method on an object which was passed to your native method.
    o You can ask one object for a reference to another object.
    o You can call a java constructor, which will return a reference.

    Hi ,
    I'm trying to call a java method from a C program. it gives no error during compilation as well as building the application. but when i tried to create the JVM by running my application it pops up the message "The application failed to start because jvm.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." I tried out setting all the environment variables to include the jvm.dll(PATH set to c:\j2sdk1.4.2_05\bin;c:\j2sdk1.4.2_05\jre\bin). Still got the same message. Then i re-installed java platform once more. Even now i get the same error. I have more than one jvm.dll at locations jre\bin\client and server, oracle has some jvm.dll . Will that be a problem? if so can i remove those? which of them should be removed and how?

    You either have to add to the system path of where is your jvm.dll is located or explicitly link to jvm.dll call GetProcAddress to obtain the address of an exported function in the DLL.

  • Invoking java methods from C/C++ on the machine with different JREs

    I implemented Windows NT Service instantiating JVM and invoking several java methods. Everything works but I have an issue with running the service on the machine where multiple different versions of JRE have been installed. The service is calling java methods that require JRE 1.3 or later so I wrote the code that is setting system PATH from within the service based on the configuration stored in the external file. The problem is that the service requires jvm.dll to be in the PATH prior lunching it since this library is instantiated through the implicit linking. When I put jvm.dll in the same path as the service binary I can lunch it but JNI_CreateJavaVM fails and returns -1. This happens even if JRE 1.3 is in the system PATH prior lunching the service.
    Everything works if the system PATH contains references to JRE 1.3 and jvm.dll is removed from the service's directory.
    I am looking for an advice on what is the proper way to deal with invoking java methods from the C/C++ executable in the environment with different versions of JRE.

    Here's a way I have done what you are asking about:
    What you want to do is make all of your linking happen at runtime, rather than at compile time. This way, you can edit the PATH variable before the jvm.dll gets loaded.
    Following is some code that I used to handle a dll of my own in this manner. You can decide if you want to write a "wrapper" dll, or if you find it simpler to approach the jvm.dll in this way.

  • Win2000 NoClassDefFoundError running java.exe from DOS prompt

    I am using Windows 2000 with J2SE v 1.3.1_02 and have a problem when I run java.exe from the command line for classes that are defined to be in a package. I can both compile and run this program from the TextPad editor but when I run it from a DOS prompt I get the error "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: MyClass"
    My CLASSPATH is set to D:\
    The files MyClass.java and MyClass.class are in the directory D:\MyProject

    Note that if I comment out the package statement and add "." to CLASSPATH then it runs from the DOS prompt. Why does the program run from inside TextPad but not from the DOS prompt? Seems to be some type of bug in java.exe on Windows 2000 when the keyword package is used.

    It turns out that if you use the main method in a class that declares the package statement you need to use the fully qualified name to run the program. Using this statement works for this problem:
    java MyProject/MyClass
    the forward slash is required even though is a Windows system.

    Does anyone know how I can trigger a java method from Oracle?
    I have a certain Java method in my application which I want to be executed everytime a new record is added to a certain table.
    In Oracle I could use a trigger on insert but what can I do if I want a Java method to be executed after a new record was inserted? Does anyone know that?

    from Oracle.well unless oracle is running some sort of java listener in your vm i can't see it being possible.
    either poll for the change, or become incharge of the change, or using the external command system.

  • Call Java Method from Callback function

    I am writing a JNI wrapper in c++ for a particular event driven DLL. The DLL makes a network connection to another device and then calls a callback function when events are raised on the device. The DLL has 3 basic functions: connect, disconnect, and registerEventListener. RegisterEventListener takes a function pointer which is called each time an event is raised on the device.
    My wrapper DLL exposes connect and disconnect functions via JNI. I can call these functions just fine from my Java code. Now the question... How do I call a Java method from my c++ callback function? I can call a Java method using env->CallXXXMethod(...) from within a function that is accessible to Java but I don't have access to the JNI parameters in my Callback function.
    So how do I call a Java method from a callback function? If this cannot be done then what is the "right way" to handle native event notification with JNI?

    After a year or so using these excellent forums to answer my queries, without ever having to post a question, I've finally had to ask for help with this one. I've already looked through the JNI tutorial, and these forums, extensively, but I'm still not quite sure of how best to solve my problem.
    I need to call Java methods from a C program. I've already used JNI to call a simple C program from Java, and that's fine, but I just can't determine exactly what I need to do for the reverse to work.
    What is the definitive solution for calling Java from C? Is it to use the invocation APIs to create a JVM, and then access it through the various GetMethod, FindClass methods? Or can I 'reverse engineer' the process I followed to get Java to call C?? The tutorial is a bit confusing, as the example it gives uses Callback stuff, but I guess that's only useful when you want to go Java-C-Java??

    As pointed by others, you must expose your method as a custom function, registering with JDeveloper (for development time) as well as with SOA Suite (for runtime).

    I'd like to know how to run java program from my web page.
    I'd like to push some button in this web page so java program that would be on my server
    would pop-up. Can it be done automaticaly upon running this web site? (without any buttons - I just enter website and program pops up).

    I rather thought about RMI. But I could try servlets. So how it would look like?.
    I would make http request in browser (enter address) and program would show up in its window?. And I would not have to change anything in my program?. This program would run then on both boxes?. One remotely and one not?.
    But I would have to learn some basics, I've never worked with servlets. Could you suggest some good sites about it?. With ready examples so I could tweak them to my purpose.
