Joining existing OES servers running samba to DSfW domain

I fell dense for asking but I have not seen an answer to this question anywhere. I added DSfW into my environment and I had existing OES 11 (sp1) servers that had samba running and functioning well for what I needed. Now (before I upgrade to service pack 2, I would like to get some ducks in a row.
The servers that were running samba prior to the introduction of DSfW, I want to have as members of the domain.
What are the steps to do this?

We are a file and print shop with users demanding all sorts of ways to access their files. The three file servers in questions are set up with NSS/NCP access to the file systems with SMB (as part of a workgroup, since the DSfW domain was added later) and AFP overlaid. SMB was originally used for web access to the file systems through our SSL VPN.
I would like to join the Macs int he office to the DSfW domain and have them authenticate to the domain and have access to the files, hopefully without having to re-enter passwords for each server, and thus be able to discard AFP on the servers.
If I need to redo the SMB configuration to get it to work with DSfW, then that is alright. I'm sure I can reconfigure the VPN to access any new SMB configuration.

It may help to understand exactly what these servers are doing now, vs.
what you want them to do. Should they be DCs when done? Are you just
wanting to share files to workstations using SMB? Are there
pieces/configurations of Samba right now on those other servers that you
would like to preserve?
Good luck.

  • Add existing OVM servers to Ops Center 11g?

We are turning an Ops Center 11g pilot project into production and we need help with our existing OVM Server for SPARC servers. We have a number of OVM 2.2 servers. When we discover them we don't see the VM asset showing in the "All Assets" list. Is there a way to discover the "Oracle VM Server for SPARC" asset that we can then add to virtual pools?
    Thanks,

    Try this......
Also it shouldn't allow you to add such servers in an OVM Server for SPARC Server Pool.
Here a filter is missing in Ops Center: such servers shouldn't be proposed in the list of assets that can be added to a Server Pool, instead of allowing you to try it and then see an error that can't be understood.
To have a setup with servers that you will be able to add to Server Pools, and on which you will be able to create logical domains from Ops Center, you can either install these servers from Ops Center following the documentation at :
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E27363_01/doc.121/e27511/ftr_ovm_sparc_mgmt.htm#autoId11 "Installation of Oracle VM Server for SPARC"
or you can install manually the LDoms Virtualization Controller agent on an already installed server.
I think this is not documented for LDoms, the current documentation at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E27363_01/doc.121/e27511/asset_mgmt.htm#autoId13 "Installing Agent Controllers From the Command Line" will install a Zone Virtualization Controller Agent.
You should first uninstall the current Zone Virtualization Controller agent on your servers, running from the control domain :
    $ /var/scn/install/uninstall
then I didn't do it yet manually on S11, I think it should be done as below if someone can confirm or provide the right procedure on S11. Otherwise I'm installing a s11 setup (with an MSR to sync that will take time) and could confirm tomorrow this manual procedure.
It should be similar as in http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E27363_01/doc.121/e27511/asset_mgmt.htm#autoId13
except that the zip to download at step 4 it the IPS zip : OpsCenterAgent.SolarisIPS*.zip
then at step 7, you have to run "install -l -p <proxy IP address>" instead of "install -a"
This step will expect that the S11 version configured on this server matches the version in the MSR you defined in Ops Center.
and at step 10, before running the "agentadm configure..." command, you need to create a file providing network settings :
create a file /opt/sun/n1gc/lib/virtualController.properties with the following content that you should adpat to your host (here for example on my host smt4-24, with IP address 10.166.88.53)
    xvmserver.appliancename=smt4-24
    network.interface=net0
    network.ipaddress=10.166.88.53
    network.subnetmask=255.255.255.0
    network.defaultgateway=10.166.88.1
then proceed to the agentadm configure command as described at step 10.
After this command has finished, you should have in Ops Center an OVM for SPARC with ldoms management capabilities, allowing you to add this asset to a Server Pool and create logical domains

  • How to set up TimeCapsule (4th) to create own private (wired) network behind Airport Express (5th) that is set up to join existing wifi-network of fritz adsl modem/router?

I work in an office building with free Wifi to connect to the Internet. I want to be able to use this internetconnection, but at the same time I want to shield of my own wired network.
    I've made the following configuration:
    - fritz adsl modem / router
    - Airport Extreme (5th gen) set up to join existing wireless network (green light, works)
    - Lan-cable from lan-port AE to wan-port TC (4th gen)
    - Lan-cable from TC to Mac
    - Lan-cable from TC to Printer
When I set my TC (network-settings) in bridge-mode everything works fine, but my Mac and Printer get an IP-address from the fritz modem / router and are visible to others.
I tried to set TC in NAT/DHCP-mode, but then I get the error message that I should set a static IP-adress for TC. When I set TC in DHCP-mode, it looses connection to the AE. I'm not sure what to do now. Does anyone know how to set up my TC and create my own private network and still be able to get on the internet?

    Hajenius wrote:
Is there a better alternative? I'd rather not want to reset my TC every day.
You are using free internet.. so there is a price to pay.. that is convenience and non-ideal network setup.
The better alternative is to pay for your own connection. Then you are completely free of the possibility of others in the bullding seeing your connection. (as long as you secure the wireless).
But I think you are probably over worrying about public wifi.. if it is setup right.. ask the building admins.. it should be setup so each user cannot see another users connection. This is typical for most wifi setup and simply means you can see internet connection but nobody else on the connection. ie other wireless users.
Having a router with NAT makes it then more secure again and allows clients on your own network to interact with each other. But you can setup wireless to the free wifi for every client.. (depending on how many IP you are allowed).. and run a secondary network without internet access. This is easy for desktop etc where you have a wireless and a wired connection but less convenient for mobile devices.. unless you use a cloud connection and each client can link and share via that.
Have I made the explanation worse??
Think of it this way.. if you had 3 laptops.. all 3 could connect to the internet from the building wifi.. but they cannot talk to each other or share resources in local office. You can put resources out in the cloud, that can be shared.. but that adds traffic and most free services are not fast.
Now you can also plug all three into Time Capsule by ethernet.. and share local resources. Files, printers backup etc. This network is not connected to the internet at all. Each laptop has internet via free wifi and local connection.
For devices like iphones that have no ethernet or other method.. you could use local wireless and public wireless.. but in turns.. still the only advantage is less issues with double NAT.. if that causes problems.. then this is an alternative.

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • Workflows 2013 and SQL Report Services: Configure on Independent Servers or Existing App Servers?

Currently, my SharePoint 2013 Farm has Workflows 2013 and SQL Report Services installed on app servers, along with other applications. Workflows 2013 isn't working correctly (installed prior to my coming on board with the organization), I'm assuming it
is a configuration issue, but rather than re-configure, I've read that is recommended to be a standalone server. It was also recommended by a MSFT rep that our report services have its own independent server. Currently, Report Services is also installed on
an app server that runs other applications on the farm.
Has anyone had any experience with installing Workflows 2013 and/or SQL Report Services on independent vs. existing application servers?
Additionally, my existing application servers have 24 GB of RAM (I believe the recommendation for SharePoint production environments is 12 GB), should I plan for the potentially new servers (Workflows and Report Services) to also have 24 GB of RAM? Not really
sure if it will be needed if they have dedicated tasks.
Thanks for any input you can provide!

It entirely depends on load. WFM will work just fine installed on servers in the SharePoint farm. SSRS preferably should go on the end-user facing servers for better performance.
The questions you're asking are all "it depends" :)

  • Time Capsule won't join existing network

    Hello,
I recently bought a new Time Capsule to use with Time Machine over my existing network. The problem that I'm having is that it isn't connecting to the network. When I do it on the Mac, I select More Options  > Join existing network but it just takes me right back to the "Create new network" screen. When I do it on iOS, it just says that an error has occurred. What is going on?
    Thanks,
    Jacob Saunders

The existing wireless network could be incompatible.
It is a super poor way to run the TC.. the following things happen.
The TC will become super slow.. all access to the TC will be via the existing wireless network.
The TC ethernet ports will be shut off.
The TC wireless will work as a simple client of the current network. So you will lose all value in buying an AC wireless router.
I strongly recommend you plug the TC into the existing router by ethernet. If that is not possible there is alternative of using a wireless bridge to the TC.. and maintaining its usefulness..

  • Manage DPM servers, running DPM jobs, etc from SCOM 2012 SP1

    Hi,
    Little background about our systems.
We have a dedicated SCOM 2012.
We have 22 DPM servers, DPM 2010 and DPM 2012 (we are upgrading to 2012 SP1, we have customers that still using Windows 2003 servers) to be managed by SCOM
We have a few DPM servers that are not located on the same domain as the SCOM server (untrusted domain).
    Some problem we have
    1. When we try to manage the DPM servers from the SCOM server.
From SCOM 2012 server I can “Manage DPM server” that are located in our domain but I cannot manage DPM servers located on untrusted domains (customer’s domains). I receive the below error message
"Unable to connect to <untrusted domain DPM SERVER> ID: 948
Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer"
I guess it’s because the account that I’m using to run SCOM server located in our domain and does not have the permission to open the DPM console on the untrusted domain. So I wonder if it is possible to use “RUN AS profiles/accounts”
to solve this issue, and how?
    2. I have installed SCOM 2012 Operations Manager Console on my computer and then installed DPM Central Console.
When I select one dpm server (from my computer), that is on our domain, and then click “Manage DPM server” I got this error message
"Unable to connect to <our domain DPM SERVER> ID: 33333
    1. Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer (YES)
    2. Verify that the current user has been added to at least one of the roles in Operations Manager. (YES)
    3. Open Operations Manage console and then try launching the DPM Console (THAT IS WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO)
    4. If you have re-imported the management pack recently, the role configuration may be corrupt. Open the DPM-specific roles and check if the roles have task assigned to them. If not, delete the roles and recreate the...."
When I click on “Get more information” I get this error message.
"You don´t have access permission to connect to the System Center Data Access service on <SCOM SERVER>. Please check if it is a permission issue".....
Do you know why I cannot connect to any DPM server on our own domain?
Why do I get access permission error on my computer but not on the SCOM server (using the same account)?
What should we do to be able to connect to DPM servers that are on untrusted domain?
    3. Is it possible to see Last Recovery Point date/time in SCOM alerts?
For me it is the first thing I look at. If it has failed 10 min ago it is not critical.
But if it is a date and time more than 1 day old, then it is critical.
I hope someone can help us with this
    Br
    SvBoho

    Hi,
To manager DPM, I think we may need to add the account to local admin group of the DPM server.
In addition, to connect to DPM the user needs permissions to DPM/SQL Server DPMDB.
For your DCs, have your enabled agent proxy option? If not, please enable that option for all DCs.
To monitor DPM with SCOM, please also go through the below links:

  • Join Existing Network Wirelessly Disables Ethernet Ports?

So I have an Airport Extreme upstairs (my main router, connecting to modem), and another one downstairs. I have several devices downstairs that need Ethernet connection. Whenever I set up my downstairs AE to join existing wireless network created by the upstairs AE, the Ethernet ports are disabled.
I found it the hard way after spending 2 days trying to figure it out, and finally gave up and called Apple Technical Support, and after spending over 2 hours with the guy, he just found it then as well.
Can anyone confirm this as well? I'd like to be able to use both of them. Currently I have to resort to using an Airport Express plus a switch to get more than 1 Ethernet port.

Actually there are two types of WDS that the 802.11n AirPorts can support: 1) The older 802.11g static WDS, and 2) The newer 802.11n dynamic WDS. The only reason you would want to use the first type is if you had a mix of 802.11g & 802.11n AirPorts and wanted to create an extended network. Sorry, there is a lot of missing or confusing information about this and it is not well documented.
As you already know, the 802.11n AirPorts offer the options to "Allow this network to be extended" and "Extend a wireless network" which would be the correct settings for a dynamic WDS ... and the one I would recommend if you want to enable the Ethernet ports on the extending AirPort.

  • Print to Linux Server Running Samba & CUPS

Trying to get iMac to print to the shared printer on home Linux Server running Samba and CUPS 1.2.10.
The printer shows up as a shared printer, however, in looking in my logs, I see that the destination packets are being sent to ip 255.255.255.255, instead of the Linux Server.
I have also tried to configure as IPP Printer, but that produced the same result.
    Thanks ::

Can you give us more detail, like printer model, what protocol(s) you've tried and what entries you put in Printer Setup Add dialog? While you're at it, how have you enabled printer sharing on the linux box?
IPP would be the preferred protocol. When you Add in OS X Printer Setup, you'll need the IP address as well as the printer "queue name" from linux.

  • Joining existing 820.11g network with AirPort Express

    Hello all!
I'm hoping someone can answer this, as I'm about to tear what's left of my hair out - or throw the new Airport Express out the window!
I have an existing D-link 2100 AP (802.11g 2.4ghz) access point. It connects to my wired LAN and serves a few wireless units (wife's PC, iPad, iPhone4, AppleTV2) flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a Airport Express with the intention of hooking it up to the stereo in the kitchen and use it for AirPlay.
Whatever I do I can't seem to get it to find and connect to my WLAN!
I can find it in the AirPort utility and configure it, but when it restarts after config it never connects to the WLAN. If I hook it up over ethernet with my switch I get access to it again, and it complains it can't find my WLAN.
When I configure it to "join existing network" I can sometimes see my SSID in the dropdown box, sometimes not. I have the correct encryption settings and password, and all other Apple devices connects right away.
The DLINK log doesn't show any entries with the AirPort Express MAC adress
Tried turning off the "G" mode, doesn't help.
Tried changing channels, doesn't help (but the AE seems to notice the changed channel, weirdly enough)
Tried setting it as completly open network, WPA, WPA2, Personal/Enterprise doesn't help.
Only thing I've not tried is to extend the existing network with WSD, as my understanding is it doesn't really work with non-Apple products - maybe I'm wrong?
I suppose getting a Apple Extreme base station would sort all this out, but does someone have any thoughts on this problems before I give up the D-link that's worked flawlessly for several years?
    Thanks!
    Patrik

    Hi,
I had a similar problem setting up the Airport Express through by existing router. The problem in the end was the encryption. I had to do a manual setup (in the airport utility). My router has a 10 digit hex key, and uses WEP; this requires the express to use WEP 40bit. Once I'd done that it was ok. I can stream to the express via my router from my iPhone4
Also, when it had the wrong settings I had to do a factory reset to get the apple network to appear again. The instructions for this are wrong in the manual. You have to turn the express off, hold in the reset button and turn on. Keep the button pressed and the light starts flashing amber quickly. Keep held in until this stops flashing, and release the reset button. Then you need to wait for around a minute before you see the device in the airport utility. If it's still not there, manually change you network to the apple one, if it's in the list of available networks in whatever OS you're using.

  • Using OC to manage HP servers running Red Hat?

We've inherited a couple of HP Proliant DL360 G7 servers running Red Hat. I can manage the OS from Ops Center but I can't manage the hardware. I've tried picking "Other IPMI Service Processor" from the "Search for Type" list during "Custom Discovery" but the discovery fails. I've verified that I'm using the correct IPMI user and password. I can use ipmitool from the command line but I have to use "lanplus". Is OC not capable of using lanplus?
The Prolliant is running "ILO 3 Advanced", version "1.26 Aug 26 2011". Is that too new for OC?
    Thanks,

I was under the impression that OC was capable of using lanplus.. but I could be wrong. (I usually am)

Generally in such cases samba is the culprit, and occasionally ldap.
Is it possible to take trace of packets exchanged by the server and check for smb and ldap filters.
See for the failure condition in the trace. We can take it from there....
