Jpeg preview for picture books or master/versions

When creating a book does Aperture use the previews as other Apple applications use or are the actual master/version "files" with the modifications used? If it is the previews I will need to regenerate the previews in a higher quality.
thanks

Aperture uses the masters and creates whatever versions you have selected. When the book is generated it redoes it all at full resolution. Previews are not involved.

  • Jpeg size for iphoto books?

Hi, have found that some of my jpegs are to small in size to print properly for books. Does anyone know what size is best for making books?

The best size is as large as you can get. iPhoto will
Default DPI Settings in iPhoto 7's Preference File
    BookTargetDPI - 300
    BookTargetMediumDPI-300
    BookTargetSmallDPI - 300
    BookWarningImageDPI - 180
    PrintImageDPI - 720
    PrintWarningImageDPI - 140
So if the photo you put in a frame will be printer at less than 180 dpi you'll get the warning label. A photo might give you that warning at a full page frame but will be OK in a 2 photo/page frame. I've have photos print with that warning and they looked OK. What are the pixel dimensions of your smallest photo. The smallest I've used is 1600 x 1200 and created a whole book with that size. I did not have any full page photos however.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problems uploading Publication Preview for my book in iTunes Producer

I created a book in iBooks Author (very easy), and uploaded it using iTunes Producer. However, I didn't realize I needed to create a separate sample book/publication preview. Now, when I look at my book in iTunes Connect, it says, "No publication preview uploaded. You must upload a publication preview before it can appear on the store." However, I can't find any way to upload my publication preview after the fact. Interestingly, in iTunes Producer, it says "Optional Preview", so that's why I didn't worry about including it. I click on "choose", then navigate to where I saved the sample book file, and it is greyed out so I can't select it. I did try starting from scratch, but it still didn't include the preview. If I save the preview in iBooks Author's default location, then I can't find the files anywhere on my computer, so I just saved it in my documents. Any ideas?

For the preview, when you have your book open in iBooks Author, go to the File Menu and select duplicate. This will create a duplicate copy of your book. You may want to rename it. On the second copy, decide what pages you want to include in the preview/sample book, and delete all the other pages. Once you've saved the shorter version, go to the file menu and select export. This will bring up a window, where you should make sure you've clicked on iBooks for the export type. Then it will ask you to name and save it.
Once you've done that, open the iTunes Producer file with all your book information, and find the box for the preview version and then navigate to the new file and add that. Then when you upload your book, it should include both the full book and the preview version.

  • Placing order for picture book

When I click "buy book" I get the following message:
"Your book seems to have frames on one or more pages that do not contain photos. You must either change the layout of those pages or place photos in those frames before you can buy this book."
I have checked every page 5x over and there are NO EMPTY FRAMES. I even re-did the entire project just to see if that would solve the problem. iPhoto will not let me proceed with the order without fixing this problem. I'm making this book as a birthday gift to my wife.
Any tips/suggestion/help on how to fix this?

  • Set up for a book

I'm new to ID, coming from Word 2007, and working on setting up the headers
for a book on master pages, where 1st page of each chapter has no header,
then even and odd page headers are different. I'm okay on the even-odd page
spread. For the 1st page, should I set up a separate master?
#2 - Once set up as above, in importing a Word doc, will ID know which
master page to use when adding pages to end of import?
    Thanks for any help!!

The only way you can add content or modify existing content in a master frame when you are not on the master page itself is to "override" it onto the current page. That happens automatically when you place content into an empty frame (image or text), but if you want to type or edit the content you need to do it manually. Holding Cmd (Ctrl) + Shift and clicking the frame allows you to select it and override.
Any attributes you don't change will remain linked to the master frame, so you'll want to do any resizing or positioning on the master page, not on the document page, if you want it to affect all the pages based on the master. It will become clearer as you work.

  • Are JPEG 3504x2336 pixel pictures too high resolution for the photo books?

    Hi,
I am done creating my photo book and I am ready to order, but I'd like to know if my pictures are too high resolution. They are professional wedding pictures so they are 7.4 mb each JPEG 3504x2336 pixel pictures. (Last time, I printed through MyPublisher but the pages with multiple pictures didn't turn out well and they said it was because the resolution was too high so when they compressed the file for the pages with multiple pictures it didn't turn out well.) Will I run into the same problem if I print directly through Iphoto?
If I do need to lower the resolution, how do I do it, given that I've aready created the book?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
When you order the book it will be compressed and a PDF will be created. That PDF is what gets uploaded to Apple (via Kodak) for printing. So the best way to check your book before ordering is to create a PDF, then inspect it. Chances are, what you see in your PDF is what you will get printed.
To do this, select your book and do File > Print. You'll get an "Assembling book" progress bar. That can take several minutes. When done, you get the Print Dialog box. Click the PDF button and choose "Save as PDF..." Choose a name and location for the file (the Desktop is convenient) and Save. Then switch to the Finder and open that PDF in Preview. You might select a page or two and do a test print yourself, to see if the quality looks good. The PDF saves you from having to print out the whole book yourself to check for errors.
    Regards.

  • 1 master, many versions, 1 preview for each version?!!

One of the advantages of non destructive editing is to contain the increase of disk space required for having multiple versions of 1 master file (which is the one that takes most of the space on the hard drive). All this may vanish!
With aperture 1.5 you run the risk to have one preview for each version and, consequently, many enormous files piling up. Even if you do not actively create previews, they are created each time you run a slide show, and this takes up time and space!!
Did they find a new strategy to make you have bigger and bigger libraries and buy bigger and bigger disks?
Any way to avoid previews at any time?
    maxbor

I think the previews make sense when either you want to share your photos with iLife or iWork, or when you have your raw files in an external HD.
This is how I'm minimazing the use of previews, just to share with iLife my favorite pics:
In preferences, I switch off "New Projects Automatically Generate Previews", "Share Previews With iLife and iWork" is on.
In the projects panel, I select the first project, I click on the wheel on the top right corner of the projects panel and untick "Maintain Previews". Continue doing this with every project.
Now I create two smarts albums, one with all the images rated 4 or 5* and other one with images rated 3* or lower. I go to the 4/5* one, select all the images there, right click on them and select "Update Previews". I go to the 3* or lower album, select all the images, right click on them and "Delete Previews".
From now on, all I have to do it's everytime I'm done with a project, in its browser I search for 4* or better rated images and "Update Previews".
No more waste of HD for pics I will never share with iLife or iWork.

  • How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
    Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!

  • How long should it take to upload pictures for iPhoto books

I have created a book for Christmas on iPhoto.  The book is 100 pages.  There are two steps to the process of sending in your order.
    1.  Assembly (which it assembled no problem, under 30 min)
    2.  Upload (it shows a bar and a blue line moves as it uploads)
I have been uploading for 2 days now and I am 1/4 of the way there.  Now while I am waiting for it to upload I cannot do anything with my iPhoto pictures.  Which is a problem since I take pictures for my school and I need to edit pictures by Tuesday.
It states under the "Uploading book to the store...."  Note: Any interruption of the upload process will cancel your order.
I have enough memory that this should not be the problem.  I have turned off every application, restarted my computer, checked for updates.  Nothing helps.  I have had to cancel this order 3 times now and restart the process as I needed to use iPhoto for school projects.
This should not take more than 2 days!  What is going on?  Any help would be wonderful.  Thank you
    Kara
    OS X Yosemitie
    Version 10.10.1
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Two days is way too long for the upload, unless you are having a very slow Wi-Fi.
There may be a something interfering with your connection to the Print Products Store (Anti virus software, firewalls), or you have included unprintable items.
Is the PDF preview of your book correct? Make a review and check it carefully for missing items, see this help page:
iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture
If the preview is alright, try to upload your book again in Safe Mode. That will disable non standard extensions, and prevent them from interfering with your connection to the Print Products Store:

  • Urgent help needed with iPhoto/pdf preview for book order - mysterious pixelated areas show on PDF but not in iPhoto

Hello. I ordered an iPhoto book last week to give to my parents for their 50th wedding anniversary. Tonight, I just checked on the order status and found that my book is cancelled. I received no notification about it, and all I could do was fill out the online form, so customer service will get back to me on Monday via email (if I'm lucky...). There is no telephone number for me to call about this. I decided I'd best do some searching to try to figure out what had happened.
I had thought that the preview I saw in iPhoto was the preview of the book. I found out I was wrong. So I created a PDF preview of the book and found some craziness that I don't understand. In iPhoto (and any other program, i.e. PhotoShop), my photos are fine. They are mostly TIFF format and high resolution with a few high res JPEGs. However, when I view the PDF, there is a band of black and white pixelation about 1/2-inch across the bottom of some pages - not all. The photos in that area are messed up in that band zone. The other photos are totally unaffected. This affects both TIFF and JPEG photos, and both black and white and color.
Has anyone else had this problem, and what was your solution? I would be extremely grateful to anyone for advice or information about this! The anniversary party is less than a week away and I'm beyond my limit of stress right now...

Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new library.  Import enough photos for a book (use some of those in the current book) create a new book and preview as a PDF.  If you don't see the problem then it's limited to your library which may be damaged.  If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot and the option to rebuild the small thumbnails.
If you get the same problem in the test library then log into another user account on your Mac, create a test library and try it there.  If the problem shows up there a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated.  To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
If you don't encounter the problem in the other user account then it's something in your account that's the culprit. Post back with the results.

  • Picture Book theme - why has my book printed with text box outlines showing? and how do I change this for any future purchases? This did not occur with previous books.

Why have borders appeared around the text boxes in the Picture Book theme and how do I change them for the future.  My latest book looks dreadful!

Have you checked, if your book is really set to the "Photos" Theme? This looks like you may have used one of the "Travel" themes. These themes create borders around the text boxes. When you select a theme, the book title will say "Photos", even if the theme is a different one.
For example, frames text boxes with the "travel" theme.
Have you previewed your book, before printing it? Did the framed boxes already show in the preview?

There may be a few links in Apple Support, regarding articles about how to use iBooks Author
and iBooks Store, etc; these would be separated into two general categories by device used.
Since there is an iOS and an OS X version of each, you may have to look to see what Apple
Support says about the one you are interested in; and how far their database goes toward an
answer to your question. Otherwise, a general search engine approach may be necessary.
Not sure if anything along the lines of what you seek would be available in an App.
References to iBooks Author and iBooks Store, etc appear within these two categories in Support:

Appears a community host moved your earlier post into one of the iBooks Author or Store sections

of iBooks you are interested in, have similar questions or answers by others who'd visited previously.

I have recently purchased a hybred 750GbHDD as an upgrade for my MAC Book Pro (Intell Version) I have a boot camp partition to the original 500GB HDD. How can I expand both partitions to fit the new drive?
I have tried bootcamp and have had no luck due to the fact that boot camp doesn't see the additional HDD space of 250Gb. What am I not doing?

Ouch, well there is a problem.
This is the stack of partitions on your old drive
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (50GB say)
    Bootcamp (50GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
This is the same stack on your new drive imaged from the old one.
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (50GB say)
    Bootcamp (50GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
    Emtpy Space (100GB say)
    This is what you want
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (100GB say)
    Bootcamp (100GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
EFI has to be at the top of the drive and Lion Recovery has to be at the bottom of the drive.
And you only have four partitions.
You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
This is what your going to need to do.
You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

  • Looking  for book recommendations and version comparisons

My company is switching to WLS 10.0 (from a non-WebLogic server), and I would like to find a book on the subject. Ideally, but not necessarily, it would cover J2EE as well. I have been looking around a bit, and most of the books cover previous versions, so I am a little concerned about how relevant they are. For example, there is an O'Reilly Press book that sounds excellent, but it is based on v8.1. (And the J2ee stuff might be out of date as well.) Is that still a worthwhile book? What about a 9.2 book? Or a 10.3 book?
If there are any particularly good places to start in the vast pile of information at oracle.com, I would like to know that as well. Thanks all.
