JPG quality in FCE

I've scanned photographs to jpegs and imported them into FCE. When I open the pictures in the Viewer they look fine. But when I put them in the Timeline and watch them in the Canvas, they're grainy or blocky. Why is this? If I output the file to DVD will the pictures still look poor? If so, would anybody know how to fix this?

Nelson, can you tell us what size photo you scanned - was it a 4x6 for example, did you scan the entire photo or only a portion of it (and if so, what size area did you scan).
The squeezing, if I understand what you mean, is a result of the difference between square pixels (photos on a computer screen) and rectangular pixels (video). There are pixel dimension settings you can use when you scan your photos (with any scanner including Canon scanners). Usually 720x540 or 720x480 but the answer is different depending on the version of FCE that you are using. That will set things up correctly for the conversion that FCE does from square to rectangular pixels, thereby eliminating the distortion in the video image.
It would be best to know exactly what settings you used when you scanned your photo - length & width and dpi and if you changed them in Photoshop before saving your image. Then it would be possible to suggest what to do in Photoshop to change your existing image file to the correct settings for FCE.

  • Maximum jpg quality in my pdf portfolio

    would love to get any input from another photographer (or anyone else). About specific tips for maximum jpg quality in my 20 page pdf portfolio. What file pixel dimensions do you use? What quality levels in photoshop "save fer web" before importing into illusrator for type and conversion to pdf. Or do you do it all in photoshop. Color spaces? Noise reduction? file format before import into illustrator.
    All these and anything else you care to pass on. Failing that, any recommendations on where to find a tutorial that addresses same?

    The portfolio is strictly for e-mailing. Sometimes in response to a request and often unsolicited. I do not have a gallery site or an ftp capability. As an email attachment, size is important, hence the "save for web" process.
    The current versions are 1.5 and 6 megabytes. Obviously the 6 meg version is sharper, the color truer. But 6 megs is a bit much attached to an email...
    Any insight you may have would be much appreciated.
    Thank you for your response.

    Perhaps this would be a great topic for and article at
    acrobat.com.

    David is right, this is really a topic for the other forums.
    However, I can offer some basic advice from my experience as a
    photographer, blogger and person who uses Acrobat.com and other
    sites to post photos.
    The first important point is that the monitor resolution is
    typically 72 dpi. If you are saving to show as a JPG in a web page,
    for example (not embedded in a PDF), setting the dpi larger than
    this is problematic - the image will just appear larger. If you are
    embedding in a PDF for printing, the image should match the dpi of
    the document - usually 300 dpi, although it varies, else the
    program (Acrobat, for example) will have to scale the photo in a
    way you can't necessarily control.
    When I am exporting files from Photoshop (or, more
    frequently, Lightroom), I usually set the resolution to 72 dpi and
    then use 100x the size of the print. For example, a photo with an
    aspect ratio of 4x5 will be 400x500 pixels. I've found that this
    creates an image (some panoramics excepted) that tends to 'fit' in
    most monitors and is large enough to contain good detail.
    Color space: Adobe1998. I believe that PDF will attempt to
    either render the image in its current color space, or translate
    it, but Adobe1998 is pretty ubiquitous and has worked for me
    (unless you need CMYK or something else specific).
    The larger issue is that the JPG compression is dependent on
    the nature of the photograph. Some photos are fine at 60%, some
    halo miserably. So you'd have to do it manually for each to be
    absolutely sure. However, most of the time I export at 60%
    compression, 72dpi and I'm OK. But I am usually not producing a
    saleable print or a portfolio piece that has to look perfect. I
    just want it to look as good as possible on a computer screen while
    still being able to automate. TIFF avoids all that, but there's no
    compression and the image is huge, as you know.
    Since you are producing a PDF, you could try a side-by-side
    test. Do it once with TIFFs at 300 dpi and once with 80% JPGs. This
    test will exercise whether the rescaled PDF (with 300dpi) renders
    as well as a 72dpi PDF with JPGs on your screen.
    The final advice I'd give is to examine how small a file you
    really want. With Acrobat.com's Share application, giving people
    access to a large PDF is no longer a problem - you don't have to
    email it, which is where it typically gets blocked due to file
    size. To be sure, 20 TIFFs taken with a decent camera (8MP+) is
    going to create an unduly large file, but the same images as 80%
    JPGs will probably get you what you need. If won't be a small PDF,
    but it won't be 50MB either.
    As you are also probably aware, many of the social networking
    sites that have photo applications automatically rescale photos or
    do other side-processing to ease the load. Clearly, that doesn't
    work for a professional photographer.
    Hope this helps, I'll subscribe to the topic if follow up is
    needed. But as has been mentioned, the forums for the other
    products are probably the place where you'll get more detailed
    advice than I can provide.

  • JPG-Quality Articles vs. PDF-Quality Articles

    What are the pros and cons of using one vs. the other? I know that PDF supports pinch and zoom. Is the file size significantly smaller? If so, why is JPG Quality still supported?

  • Can we extract the "Save" preference info (resolution, JPG quality, etc.) from an existing PDF file?

    Hi,
    Is it possible to obtain *ALL* the save preference data from a PDF file with Adobe Reader alone?

  • What is the property of best JPG quality?

    Hello,
    When i load an external JPG file in a movieclip, how can i
    get the best quality of
    this external JPG file?
    I know for video it is Smoothing, but for external jpg files
    i really don't know.
    Regards,
    Micheal.

    Thanks GWD and kglad,
    It seems more compex then i tought, because
    I tried al these things:
    movieclip_mc._quality = "BEST";
    moveiclip_mc._highquality = 2;
    ( i found this in the help file, i effects more the vector
    based animations). If set to 0, an animation is really crapy.
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/8/main/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=LiveD ocs_Parts&file=00002749.html
    And also i tried publishing the flash with jpg quality set to
    100, but that does not effect external loaded jpg.
    I think i know what causes the edge of a person in a photo
    that is not smooth. I rescaled the movieclip.
    What i don't understand is when you have a video you can use
    the property
    myvideo.smoothing = true;
    When rescaling it still looks very good.
    Why did they not use the same technique for JPG?
    Also when you import jpg files in your library you can use
    the property of this jpg and set
    the smoothing to 100% quality. This really does it's work
    with GIF's and makes the edge very smooth.
    Too bad you can't use smoothing to a movieclip :(

  • Trying to create great quality jpg slideshows to music, jpg quality

    I'm having problems creating jpg slideshows in Final Cut Express 4. I'm importing files fine, and these are very good quality large jpgs, but the playback looks really bad in FCE. The files are pixelated and certainly wouldn't look good when projected onto a modest sized screen, which is what I plan to do with them. Help? Is it a settings issue. I've read many reports that say FCE is the business at making stills slideshows, so could do with a steer please.

    You could always try Photo to Movie from LG Graphics, It's by fare the best slideshow app for Mac
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
    I would email Chris at their support department and bounce it off of him as well.
    However I'm thinking the problem may be with-in the stills itself, I fully understand your thoughts on blurring just to make it better, my wife likes to frame the stills I create the pic slide shows of, the fine detail in her frames always need blurred. even within the still itself, if there is any fine detail such as blades of grass or a striped shirt, sure enough it needs blurring to remove the jitters...
    One thing I do is, when viewing the clip, if I see the jitter issue in my still.
    Right click the still in my time line and open with editor ( you should have PS set as your still editor in FC preferences ) and, free select just the problem area and blur, render and view. if need be repeat and render again. by doing this your target in the still remain un=blurred.
    You can set your transitions to the beat of music by viewing your audio wave form.

  • Photo Quality in FCE

    Hi,
    I am trying to make a presentation of a bunch of photos. I want to use the Ken Burns effect. I am presently doing this in iMovie HD but the quality is not as good as I would like.
    Question: Will FCE produce better quality than iMovieHD using the same photos?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    J. Michael Cook wrote:

    Yes it will , You'll need to prep the images first. http://www.fcpbook.com/Photoshop1.html
    .tif and .png file extensions work best if your just using single layered stills.
    Keep in mind that you will more than likely see a flutter in your stills when you add motion. You can fix this problem using gaussian blur with your photo editor.
    You may be better off doing some searching before you get to fare into your project. This way you'll have a clear understanding of the issue before hand.

  • Poor Image Quality In FCE With Photoshop Imports

    I'm using scans created in Photoshop in my current FCE project, and am extremely disappointed with the image quality. All scans are 72 pixels/inch, 720x534 pixels (changed to 720x480 for import), sharpened with Unsharp Mask. In Photoshop, they look terrific. Imported into FCE and viewed in the viewer, they look terrific. When dropped onto the canvas to add to the timeline, suddenly they look like crap. The sharpness is gone, the edges are pixelated, and most are rendered unusable. What happened? Can I fix it? Thanks in advance.
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   FCE 1.0.1

    Really!? I'm surprised, as those numbers come from the Apple Pro Training Series book on FCE. But ok, I'll redo my images at 720x540. I should still make a version at 720x480 for import, to avoid "squeezing" the image, right? Should I avoid sharpening the image at all, or just cut back on the amount (or does this depend on the image)? When you say "the canvas is a reduced display output," do you mean that this reflects the compression that occurs with the DV format? Thanks, Tom, for your help.

  • JPG quality issues

    I design wedding albums using InDesign CS5. My high res JPGs are about 8x12 inches at 300DPI, and my album page size is 10x15 inches. When I insert a JPG into the layout and resize it to 10x15 and export (maximum quality, 300DPI) there are severe artefacts clearly visible on screen and in print.
    However when I just open up the original JPG and resize in Photoshop it is much, much cleaner. See an example here: http://www.photosbyjay.com.au/files/indesign-pain.jpg . There has been some sharpening applied but the artefacts are still just as bad before sharpening.
    Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? If I don't size the JPGs up larger than their 8x12" size in InDesign they export fine. Is this a limitation of InDesign - does it have bad upscaling algorithms? One would assume they'd use Photoshop technology.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Jay

    @John - I'm not doing the printing myself, I'm exporting and sending to my pro lab. The issue I'm having is the InDesign JPG exported file is showing terrible artefacts
    Wait...are you exporting a JPEG from InDesign and sending that to your printer?
    No no no no!
    This isn't the only problem you'll have if you do that. The only kind of file you should send to your printer is a PDF exported from InDesign. If you save your work as a JPEG, you will certainly lose quality.
    (Yes, the method you're using can make it a little bit better. But not really. And there will always be problems with text and lines and things with sharp edges -- because JPEG, by its very nature, cannot express those things without artifact).
    Is there some reason you believe you are limited to JPEG? If so, it may be time to find a new printer.

  • PDF to JPG quality

    I'm a newbee and this may be very basic, but I have not been able to figure it out.
    GOAL: Get a WORD Table on my website as JPG
    I have been instructed to Save WORD DOC as PDF.  Check
    Then Save PDF as JPG. Check
    Crop as needed and Re-Save. Check
    The JPG has very low quality (fuzzy edges) compared to the one my Webmaster did for me.
    I tried reducing the size of the JPG to 70%, 60% and even 50% with the same fuzzy results.
    It looks clean on the computer but isn't producing the same results online.
    Question: Are there different levels of Adobe acrobat.  In other words my Free Download won't give me the same quality as a purchased version?

    If you use the save as jpg with maximum quality you may be able to do what you want. The problem with saving as jpg is that it is a lossy process. Each time you save as jpg you will loose detail. If you don't use the maximum quality you may loose too much detail. The people who are giving you directions are people who do not know what they are saying.  What program are you doing your cropping in? What program are you  using to resize the graphic?
    You should be cropping in Acrobat before saving as jpg. That is one less save, one less loss of quality. JPG files are designed for photographs, they are really the wrong tool for displaying these images. I would choose either gif or png. But more importantly these are very simple tables and should be displayed as html tables. This can be done in word. You don't need to learn how to create html.
    I am attaching two copies of the cropped file. Here is the first with the quality of the jpg set to maximum and the picture set to greyscale (as opposed to the rgb that was used in the web version). The size is more than 200KB.
    Here is the file saved as a greyscale png. File size 20 KB
    The quality is similar, but the difference in file size is huge. Note, that saving from pdf to jpg is insufficient since the graphics are too large they must be resized. If you resize the graphic and resave as jpg you loose more quality and detail than if this is done with a png. But note that you may get ok reproduction with jpg set to maximum, but that is still no reason not to use a more appropriate image type like png. As to what your superior is telling you to do, speak with the people responsible for the web site. See what they suggest, get them to speak with your superiors. There is no extra work saving as jpg or png, just the size and quality of the result.

  • Image quality in FCE: Not as sharp as it should be...

    Hi, I'm getting in the queue with those who are having troubles with the output of FCE.
    I'm doing a simple DVD editing, by cutting the beginning and the ending titles and keeping the mid content.
    I extracted the VOB files from the DVD and converted them in QT format with the result being as nice and sharp as it is on the DVD.
    The final output is 768x576, H. 264, Integer (Big Endian), 25 fps, total BR 6,480.
    I put it in a FCE new project, where it has the same properties, but the sequence that contains it, for some reasons are 1280x720, Apple Int. Codec, 29,97 fps.
    I added a new beginning and ending titles in separate sequences in FCE, with a png image and some generated text, but the quality and the sharpness of the final export are not even close to the original.
    I know the original editor for the DVD personally and I know he works on Windows based machines, so no FC there.
    In this picture:
    http://www.jcmonteromultimedia.com/jcmm/download/FCEcomparison.png
    on the left is the original footage, very clear and sharp, on the right my own graphics done in FCE, with the .png logo and the added text, very low quality.
    Any help on this issue will be much appreciated!
    Thanks.
    JC

    768x576 is what? That's square pixel PAL. What is that? It's completely non-standard. And why H.264? That's a delivery codec not a production codec.
    FCE only works with DV and HDV using the Apple Intermediate Codec. If you're converting PAL material from DVD you convert it to QuickTime using the DV PAL codec at the standard frame size 720x576. Any material created in a video editing application is in a format designed for display on a television set. You must assess the rendered output on a video monitor. You cannot assess it on a computer monitor. It is not designed for display on a computer monitor. If you are looking at it in on a computer monitor in the QuickTime player you must make sure it is set to high quality playback.

  • Whatever is Created in LiveType....Loses Quality in FCE ......?

    I've noticed no matter what I create in LiveType after it is rendered in FCE as a Quicktime movie (LivetType clips used as intros) it loses Picture quality. It becomes very grainy, why???? How do I rectify this problem?

    Ok. This is the thing that is throwing me off. I pplaced the livetype movie onto a movie and it improved ever-so-slightly. I understand that in livetype it is created in the highest quality and the moment you place something like that onto a dvd it loses quality. Granted I don;t have a blue ray burbner so I can keep the quality but I place some of my videos on Vimeo.com that accepts HD videos and when I placed it on there site it still looks the same. It only looks good in the LiveType editor or when i just render it as a movie. Final Cut kills the quality. So much for such creating HD videos when I can't do a simple intro in HD its more like SD.

  • Save as jpg quality 12 gives smaller file than original

    Hello all,
    I have jpg photo's from a digital photocamera on my harddisk.
    I import a photo of 3 Mbyte in Photoshop,
    Then I save it as jpg with a quality setting of 12.
    This gives a jpg file of only 2,1 Mbyte.
    Does this mean that Photoshop compresses more than the camera,
    and that I lose quality ?
    Best regards and thanks in advance,
    André.

    In spite of the answers given by some of our best experts, you should know that the situation is more complicated than explained. That is probably why they did not go into more detail. Yet, you should be aware that under certain circumstances applying jpeg compression to an existing jpeg image can increase its file size.
    If an image has received significant compression using jpeg encoding, its file size may have decreased, its image quality may also have perceptively decreased, some color shifts may have occurred and in the process it acquired some spatial jpeg artifacts as a result. Now if you come upon this image and you decide to open it in Photoshop and save it at the highest jpeg quality (12 in save as,  or 100 if in save for web) the resulting file will increase in size with NO increase in  image quality.  This is becasue you have, in effect, told photoshop to preserve as best it can those spatial artifacts created by the original compression and that takes more data. You can easily verify this for yourself by saving an image at a low quality setting and then reopen it and save it at a high quality setting and compare the file sizes and qualities.
    Jpeg encodings are not all the same with one of the major differences being the quantization tables used. Another big difference occurs if one encoding scheme sub samples the chrominance (or luma) information and another does not at the same numerical quality setting. Photoshop's technique appears quite good. It is particularly good at minimizing image quality loss with repeated openings and resavings of the same image.
    Why not leave the jpg as it is ?
    Well, because you have told Photoshop that you want to control its quality by resaving it with a specific parameter. That parameter is not part of the jpeg standard, that is, for the same numerical quality setting a camera or a scanner or Photoshop or another image application will each implement that quality number differently.  If you want the original to stay as it started, then save its rendition in Photoshop under a new name leaving the original file unmodified.

  • Modding the Export Layers to Files script to preserve .jpg quality

    Please forgive me if I am posting this incorrectly, but as the thread I initially replied to is marked as Answered I started to wonder whether my question would be seen or not so I started this new thread.  My original question is located in the thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/2795719#2795719 because Kari was having a similar issue to mine, but with a different file format.  My original text:
    I am having a similar issue, except that I need to save each layer as a .jpg, and the Export Layers to Files script is compressing the images in some fashion so that a previously seamlessly tiling layer now has a border that ruins the tile.  If I save each layer individually using either the Save As command or Save for Web and Devices with the proper settings (Maximum Quality, Progressive, and Baseline Standard), the resulting images don't acquire this border, so I feel pretty certain it is something in the script that is messing up (changing the compression of) the layers, but I honestly don't know what.  I have tried modifiying the jpeg portion of the script this way, hoping to prevent it from deviating from the usual Save As options:
            case jpegIndex:
                docRef.bitsPerChannel = BitsPerChannelType.EIGHT;
                var saveFile = new File(exportInfo.destination + "/" + fileNameBody + ".jpg");
                jpgSaveOptions = new JPEGSaveOptions();
                jpgSaveOptions.embedColorProfile = true;
                jpgSaveOptions.formatOptions = FormatOptions.STANDARDBASELINE;
                jpgSaveOptions.matte = MatteType.NONE;
                jpgSaveOptions.quality = jpegQuality; // 12
                docRef.saveAs(saveFile, jpgSaveOptions, true, Extension.LOWERCASE);
                break;
    but this doesn't seem to affect whatever setting is being changed.  Layers saved to .jpg this way still acquire the border.  I don't see what line might control whether the image is saved as progressive or not, nor anything to affect the text setting "Maximum" that I use when I successfully save each layer individually.
    I am a complete novice at scripting, so please excuse/explain the obvious mistakes I may be making here.
    I have since installed the script listener plug in and isolated a bit of script for saving the intended way, and hope to insert this snippet into the Export Layers as Files script, but I can tell that some of the lines are extraneous (like where it points to the file path I took), but I don't know what is safe to trim out.  I sincerely appreciate any assistance with this!

    Here is the script that uses scriptlistner to do the jpeg save. Note I changed the name by adding '_mod' to the end to remind you that it has been edited. You can remove the origianl version by moving the file to another folder outside the scripts folder or by adding ~ at the start of the filename.
    I recommend saving this as Export Layers to Files_mod.jsx. If this doesn't work for you we can try using the scriptlistener saveForWeb.
