JRE version of Tomcat server

Hi,
How do i find out the JRE version, which the Tomcat server is using?
Please exclude the following cases. From the below cases i can find it out.
1) Finding it from JAVA_HOME in environmetal variables.
2) Wrirting java program to print the value of the property "java.version".
I need to know it from the Tomcat installation directory (i mean from the Tomcat installation files).
Thanks,
Kiran

hai,
If we develop an application using sunone studio creator , it uses datasource to connect to database(Point one) . If we want to deploy the same in tomcat we need to perform the same datasource setting in the
server.xml file in the conf directory of tomcat. information for the same can be searched from the web.
I was using myeclipse so no dtasource settings is necessary

  • Which JRE version to install on 64bit OS (win server 2008)

    Hello everyone
I'm not sure what Java and JCO versions / releases to install on a Windows Server 2008 Standard 64bit Edition. We're installing  Edge BI 3.1... apparently this is 32bit Software. I understand that we need to install JCO 2.1.9. Normally I prefer to install 64bit versions of a software on a 64bit OS.
In the JCO 2.1.9 installation preliminaries I read:
The SAP Java Connector (JCo) 2.1.9 requires a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.3 or 1.4. The 64-bit JCo versions need a 64-bit JRE version 1.4. Please see SAP note 549268 for a current and detailed list of supported platforms and Java runtime environments.
Unfortunately I can't find a 64bit JRE version 1.4... just a 32bit JRE 1.4.2_19 version. Furthermore this Java version is end of life. See http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/download-138376.html.
So question is: what versions exactly for JCO 2.1.9 (32 or 64 bit) and JRE should I install?
Thanks for some clarification in advance to anyone!
    Renaud
    EDIT:
According to [this|Re: BOE SAP integration kit issue - Java connector] posting it seems that it is required to install the 32bit version of JCO 2.1.9

Actually, this problem is only partially solved. I still get "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock..." when I type 'mysql'. I can access mysql by typing 'sudo mysql', but still get the socket error when connecting via php, so I think I still need to get to the point where I can type mysql without sudo.
Also, I went ahead and installed MySQL 5 with the tar package.

  • Compatible tomcat version for Directory server 6.3

    Dear All,
Could someone please tell me which version of Tomcat will be the compatible for Directory Server 6.3. And i am new to this directory server environment, here i need to install tomcat too so kindly send me the steps for installing tomcat. Thanks!
    Regards,
    Karthik

    Hi Karthik,
Directory Server 6.3 Control Center has been released many years ago, so it has been certified (so this means that IT IS OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED) on the most common application servers at that time, so Tomcat 5.5 and Sun App Server 8.2.
Personally I've run the DSCC also on the latest releases of Tomcat (6.0.35 at the time of writing) and Glassfish (2.1.1 series) for test deployments absolutely fine; but in case of issues, if you want your solution to be 'officially supported' by Oracle, you've got to reproduce the problem on the supported app servers in the compatibility matrix.
    HTH,
    marco
P.S.: also Directory Server 6.3 is getting older and older... at least try to get the latest patch: 6.3.1.1.1
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19261-01/E26994/html/index.html
The latest release is now 11.1.1.5.0 if you don't have any architectural/sw compatibility constraint, try to move/migrate to a more recent release

did you edit the catalina.bat file in Tomcat?
It requires that you do so...I don't think by default it will have your JDK that resides on your machine.
I've edited various versions of Tomcat and the catalina.bat, server.xml and web.xml files before, and usually I've just about always had to add a line (SET JAVA_HOME) and then the variable %JAVA_HOME% will read it.

  • How can i avoid restarting tomcat server when servlet is modified?

please advice me that how can i avoid restarting the tomcat server, whenever a servlet file is modified in my application. is their any way ?

No probs. Here's how I do things...
    1. Install tomcat as normal (e.g. I install to C:\Apps\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4)
    2. Create a webapps directory in your eclipse project with the following directory structure
    MyEclipseProject
       - src
       - conf
       - webapps
          - MyApplication
             - META-INF
             - WEB-INF
                - classes
                - lib
                - pages3. Set the project's output folder (e.g. bin folder) to webapps/MyApplication/WEB-INF/classes
    4. Put all your jar files in the lib directory
    5. Put JSPs / HTML in the pages directory (you may also want to create additional directories for TLDs, config files etc)
    6. Ensure your web.xml is in the WEB-INF directory
    7. Although it isn't essential I create a context.xml file and store it in META-INF, e.g.
    <Context reloadable="true">
<!-- Default set of monitored resources -->
         <WatchedResource>WEB-INF/web.xml</WatchedResource>
         <WatchedResource>WEB-INF/conf/struts/struts-config.xml</WatchedResource>
         <WatchedResource>WEB-INF/conf/struts/tiles-defs.xml</WatchedResource>
         <WatchedResource>WEB-INF/conf/struts/validation.xml</WatchedResource>
</Context>I use this to set monitored resources that will trigger an automatic appliation reload and to configure JAAS (not shown). See the Tomcat documentation for additional information.
    8. In the 'conf' directory I create a server.xml file used to configure Tomcat (you can copy the one from your <TOMCAT_HOME>/conf/server.xml).
After copying the file change appBase attribute in the host element to be the full path to the webapps directory. You can also change the HTTP and HTTPS ports if you wish
    9. Download and install the Tomcat Launcher plugin from Sysdeo.
    10. In Eclipse's Preferences menu you will see a new entry for Tomcat. Click this then
    a. Set your Tomcat Version
    b. Set your Tomcat Home
    c. Set "Context declaration mode" to server.xml
    d. Set the configuration file to the full path to your server.xml file created in step 8
On the "Advanced " sub page select all relevant projects to add to the Tomcat classpath
On the "JVM Settings" page add all the jars in your WEB-INF lib directory to the class path
On the "Source Path" page select all relevant projects
Now if you start Tomcat using the Tomcat icon, you will be able to remote debug your application. If you change web.xml (or any other file in your context.xml watched resources) it will automatically reload. Any changes to JSPs will automatically be picked up (providing your tell your browser not to use the page in cache - e.g. CTRL+F5 in IE)
There are some limitations that I'm still working on however. Primarily that I haven't included the Tomcat Manager application in my webapps directory, so Sysdeo cannot perform a reload. This means that if I change a source file, and eclipse auotmatically rebuilds, Tomcat doesn't pick up the change unless I either change a watched resource file (e.g. web.xml) or stop and restart Tomcat.
There's no reason why this can't be fixed, I just haven't got round to it yet.
I'm sure there are lots of other (probably better) ways of achieving the same thing. This was the first method I tried and it worked, so I stuck with it. I'm not a Tomcat config guru and I'm sure other forum users could provide some improvements should they wish.
Post if you get into trouble, however I won't be able to respond until next week.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    Hi,
How to run more than 1 instance of tomcat server on the same machine.

If are only getting your site hosted, then, normally, the host would handle clustering (to your sepcifications, of course, but it is normally the hosts responsibility).
If i need to implement clustering and load balancing for tomcat server then do we need to go for 2 different servers for production environment?
Yes, you would need two, or more, servers.
Also please guide me on how to implement clustering and load balancing for tomcat server by running 2 instances on 2 different machine? I'm a newbie to it..
It should have no (or at least minimal) impact on the code (as long as you are using beans, sessions, and the other components properly). It is handled by the web container (by the tomcat in this case). The tomcat documentation should show how to set it up (if it supports it all, I don't know, we don't have Tomcat at work, and at home I use only a single).

My web page uses a Java Applet to allow my visitors to replay chess games; the Chess Viewer Deluxe applet was written by Nikolai Pilafov some time ago and has been working properly for some time (until recently). I don't monitor this part of my site regularly so I am not sure when it began to fail. On his web site [http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2008/11/chess-viewer-deluxe.html] he has a link to check LiveConnect object functionality (which fails for OBJECT tags). His recommendation is to "seek platform specific support which might be available from the JRE developers for your platform".
I have been getting java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: ZeroApplet.class and java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: JavaToJS.class crashes with JRE version 1.6.0_26-b03-384-10M3425 VM executing a Java Applet. Until I checked the LiveConnect object functionality, I was unable to identify the source of the console error messages. This does seem to be the smoking gun.

  • Problem with PermGen memory (Java) - Tomcat Server - Business Object XI

We have installed Business Objects XI on a W2003 Standard with SP2 (x86), using Tomcat as web server and MySQL as DBMS. The server has 4 GB of RAM and dual-core processor. From the beginning we have been given the memory problems of the Java virtual machine. The exception that occurs is of type "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space failure". We modify environment variables (JAVA_OPTS) -XX: PermSize = 256m and-XX: MaxPermSize = 512m and install the monitor LambdaProbe to see the use made of memory. We note that at no time was the PermGen memory indicated by these variables, continuing in that has a default 64MB. For this reason we decided to change the Tomcat 5.5 BO included in the version 6.0.20 and also updated Java to version 1.6.0_18-b07, and make deployment by wdeploy.bat file that comes with BusinessObjects (changing config.tomcat55 and tomcat55.xml). The deployment was successful and everything works, but as with the previous version of Java / Tomcat, shortly PermGen memory fills and returns to "hang". In this latest version of Tomcat installed as a service, do not use environment variables, use an application, "Configure Tomcat", which is a tab to pass parameters to the JVM. After looking at many sites, I have seen to be putting "-D" to pass the parameter. Currently this is my configuration:
-Dcatalina.home = C: \ Program Files \ Apache Software Foundation \ Tomcat 6.0-Dcatalina.base = C: \ Program Files \ Apache Software Foundation \ Tomcat 6.0-Djava.endorsed.dirs = C : \ Program Files \ Apache Software Foundation \ Tomcat 6.0 \ endorsed-Djava.io.tmpdir = C: \ Program Files \ Apache Software Foundation \ Tomcat 6.0 \ temp-Djava.util.logging.manager = org.apache.juli . I tried changing the values of-XX: PermSize and XX: MaxPermSize, and modifying the various policies of the Garbage Collector (-XX: + UseConcMarkSweepGC,-XX: + UseParNewGC,-XX: + UseParallelGC, ...), but nothing. Any idea how to get change the value of the report? Or how to solve this problem?
    Thank you!

    Victor,
Is the Product you are using BusinessObjects Enterprise XI (Release 1)?
With XIR2 and XI31, Tomcat 5.0 and Tomcat 5.5 are included with the software, and when installed with the BOE installer, you will get an application installed to the startmenu named "Tomcat Configuration".
Using this "Tomcat Configuration" utility, there are several configuration options available.  On the JAVA tab, you will see the JAVA_OPTS that are set (These are prefixed with "-D") and also your initial and max memory sizes are listed at the bottom (Max 1024 by default in XI31).
Here is the default setting for permsize in XI31 Tomcat:
    -XX:MaxPermSize=256M
From your post, your issue might be the spaces in between your values (there should be no spaces, each "-" parameter on its own line).
I would suggest starting Tomcat and reviewing your stdout.log file to review what options were set.
    Hope that helps
    -Brian

We are using sun JRE(1.5.0_15) only. We extract Sun JRE and build it as KANAJRE.jar and signing.>I have never heard of KANAJRE. Would you care to post a link to the site, or should we just keep guessing? (My patience for random guesses is running out.)

We install using Intaller class and that is getting listed in the Java Control panel and enabled too.>List as what?
Does it list it with the entire string "KANA1.5.0_15" or is is just listed as "1.5.0_15"?
Because this line from the JNLP file..
<j2se version="KANA1.5.0_15" href="KanaJreInstaller.asp"/>..had me convinved it was a non-Sun JRE. Not so much the href, but most especially the version attribute.
If it really is the Sun JRE, I would expect this to work.
<j2se version="1.5.0_15" href="KanaJreInstaller.asp"/>And as an aside. If this installer is giving you trouble and the app. requires the 1.5.0_15 JRE, why not simply the default Sun JRE installer? What advantages do you think this installer offers?

  • How can I know the version of Application Server Java Virtual Machine

How can I know the version of Application Server Java Virtual Machine?
    Thanks a lot.

Thats easy. Your jdk/jre are located in the App Server home directory. Just run the java command under the jdk directory with the "-version" switch and it will provide you with detailed information about your VM.
For example if you're doing it at command prompt it will be something like
java -versionI hope this will be useful to you.

  • JRE version with Forms 10.1.2.3

I just finished installing the patch set 3 for Forms Services 10.1.2.0.2 to update to version 10.1.2.3. The purpose was for our users with Windows 7 IE 8 to be able to continue to use Forms.
I understand that this requires JRE 1.6.0_20. However, most machines still have 1.4.2_XX. I am able to use the updated version on my machine that is XP and IE 7 w/ the 1.4.2 JRE version. One of our users with IE 8 gets this message in the Java Console:
    Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20
Using JRE version 1.4.2_12-b03 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
He has the new one installed but it forces use of the old one.
Does anyone have a suggestion in configuration with working around this issue for users that will use either version of JRE w/ this Forms update?
I think an answer would be to uninstall JRE 1.4.2 for users w/ IE 8 but we don't have admin control on our machines.
Not a critical issue but your advice/help is appreciated.

    Phil,
When you upgraded, did you modify the formsweb.cfg to change the JRE requirement? If you didn't that would explain the message your user is getting:
    Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20Using JRE version 1.4.2_12-b03 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM>
As Chidu suggested, change the following lines in the Formsweb.cfg on the app server:
    jpi_codebase=http://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/VerifyItem-Start/jre-6u22-windows-i586.exe?BundledLineItemUUID=D.uJ_hCujxcAAAErFOQkgqsv&OrderID=pYCJ_hCuGowAAAErCeQkgqsv&ProductID=mCuJ_hCyot8AAAEri7RGXQzG&FileName=/jre-6u22-windows-i586.exe
    jpi_download_page=http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javaee/downloads/index.html
    jpi_classid=clsid:CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA
jpi_mimetype=application/x-java-applet;jpi-version=1.6.0Note: The above entries are JRE U pdate independent - meaning any version of Sun JRE 1.6 will work; it is not specific to update 21 (current update version).
    Hope this helps,
    Craig B-)

Has anybody an idea what might cause this error?

We've gotten that error when the servlet runs out of memory. The out of memory error happens when it is building the jardiff file, which can require a lot of memory to do. The servlet caches any jardiffs that it builds, so most users won't see the problem because they are requesting prebuilt jardiffs.
We've found that the servlet runs best with 256mb of max heap. But I'd imagine we are more heavy weight users than most.
I've done some stress testing on the 1.5 servlet and did not find any real memory leaks.
Based on the open source version of the servlet (which I believe is pretty much the same as the one distributed with java 1.5).
It is keeping objects in memory to track which jardiffs it has built and to track any accessed resource (jar or jnlp). If your server has enough different jars and jnlps then you need to give it enough memory to keep all these small objects in memory.
If you want be 100% sure you've given it enough memory, then you can write a script which does a HEAD request on every possible jar and jnlp inside of the servlet. That should max out its memory usage.
