JSDS 6.2 and Solaris 10 UNIX Accounts (simple, proxy)

Hi,
I just got my Solaris10 server-client setup working. Here's some items that may be useful to you: All I'm using LDAP for at this point is user authentication to include home directory management from the server ( NFS share and auto_fs setup in LDAP and on the client )
My server is JSDS 6.2 ( at least, that's what Sun's Download Center id'd it as. Here's output of DBVERSION file:
cat /var/opt/SUNWdsee/dsins1/db/DBVERSION
Sun-ldbm/6.0(64-bit) SunOS 5.10 sparc
ASSUMPTIONS:  You have the LDAP server installed and running and you are ready to run /usr/lib/ldap/idsconfig
Both systems patched to latest Recommended cluster and patches shown at JSDS download site. Also, make sure CRYPT is selected during idsconfig.

After running /usr/lib/ldap/idsconfig, I had to create VLV indexes with this command ( after idsconfig runs, it says to use directoryserver command, which does not exist in JSDS 6.2)
/opt/SUNWdsee/ds6/bin/dsconf create-index -h myserver -p nnnn ( port if not 389 ) dc=example,dc=com getgrent gethostent [....]
enter space-separated list of all VLV indexes idsconfig said to add after you ran idsconfig
ON CLIENT:
If you need to clear client init: ldapclient uninit ( if you get errors, check if ldap_cachemgr is running; if it is, kill -9 it, clear /var/ldap directory, make sure nsswitch.conf is not pointing to ldap stuff -- cp /etc/nsswitch.files /etc/nsswitch.conf
Initialize ldapclient:
ldapclient -v init -a proxyDN=cn=proxyagent,ou=profile,dc=example,dc=com
-a profileName=myprofile my.svr.ip.addr:port (port if not 389)
If this still does not work, clean up client again as before and reboot it. I had some issues w/Sun's nsswitch.conf file for LDAP taking over my client machine and rendering it useless until I rebooted it with files-settings in nsswitch.conf, making my own nsswitch.ldap file it /etc so Sun's LDAP-happy nsswitch file would not be used, and then running ldapclient init.

Just remembered something that is very subtle during idsconfig:
At one point durint idsconfig, there's a questions about storing passwords in unix CRYPT format. You must answer yes to that question or none of this will work. The default answer is no.
John
Hi munnik,
I had the same errors initially. I didn't write down what I did to clear them (oops!) but I think what I did to 'fix' this was I restarted/rebooted (can't remember which) the directory server to clear the error and then, from the client and in this order - passwd, group, shadow - I readded ldifs.
If you're still having issues with DS, make sure the VLV index step discussed above was done, nothing missed, no errors - redo if necessary: uninit client(s), reinit client(s) with new profile created as a result of running idsconfig to recreate VLV indexes - it'll skip any VLV indexes that are in the server and display a message to that effect. It's a reather brute-force method of doing things, but I couldn't locate much in the way of troubleshooting user account creation issues.
When I add a new user, here's what I do: add user to server where home dirs are and create a set of passwd, shadow, and auto_home ldif files with just the new user info and run ldapaddent. Then I add them to group (if necessary) with direct edit on ldap server.

  • Provision Unix accounts/roles/groups to Directory server using OIM

    Hi,
I have a requirement to integrated large number of Unix servers with LDAP (OID or Sun Directory Server) for Centralized Authentication and Authorization and to provision Unix accounts/roles/groups to Directory server using OIM, I have following queries.
    1. If using PAM_LDAP then what are the schema changes required in ldap to support it ?
    2. Does OIM's out of box connector for OID or Sun Directory Server supports Unix accounts/roles/groups provisioning to Directory server ? If not, can it be extend ? or do I need to write a custom connector ?
    3. If I use Oracle Authentication Services for OS for centralized unix account management then OIM provisioning is same as #2 or different ?
    Thanks
    Nitin

yes. iPlanet connector support for multivalued attribute. Go through the connector doc. It will let you know how to extend its functionality.

Assuming you have a Metalink account, there is a "Certify & Availability" tab along the top that takes you to Oracle's compatibility matrix. You generally want to read through those notes because there may be caveats (i.e. everything by product/feature X is certified) or addenda.

  • New to Sun and Solaris

Hello all. I am currently a Sr. System Administrator right now for IBM AIX and SCO UNIX OS systems and I am wanting to start learning the Sun Solaris OS and getting familiar with that in hopes to become a System Administrator for those OS as well. I know zero about Solaris or Sun right now other than what I have read about.
Anybody have suggestions on how I start learning Sun Solaris? I see Solaris 10 is a free download for x86 platforms. I was going to install that on my laptop as a dual boot for Solaris 10 and my current laptop Windows XP OS. Would that be a good start in learning Sun Solaris system? Would anybody recommend taking the training courses that Sun provides or would that be a waste of time? Most of the AIX and SCO UNIX OS I come to know and master is from learning on my own and later on taking some advanced admin courses in that.
My company is thinking changing to Sun Solaris OS and servers to replace the SCO UNIX servers so I just wanted to know any suggestions on how to get familiar with where I can get to the point of install, setup, admin Solaris servers. Thanks!

    hi " mmitguy "
    while I can't comment on
in hopes to become a System Administrator for those OS as well
part but I would like to respond on dual boot part, as I've installed Solaris 10 with Win XP recently on a single HD of my Dell 9150 Desktop. First I backed up all my data & tried to resize (using Partition Magic 8) existing Win XP partition (there was only one) & create new partition but it failed & I had to re-install Win XP.
So I would recommend first to make sure that u have Win XP installation disk & driver / utility installation disk available. And after backing all ur data from ur laptop re-install Win XP & while re-installing create 2 partitions. Install Win XP & install display / graphics card, modem, network etc drivers.
Installing Solaris 10: I downloaded Solaris 10 11/06 from Sun & burnt a DVD & ran into lots of problems so i posted this:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5137821&tstart=15
After that, some one from this same forum suggested to install Solaris Express Developers Edition 02/07 instead. ( http://developers.sun.com/solaris/downloads/solexpdev/download.jsp )
I re-installed Solaris, this time Dev Edition 02/07 and that was very, very simple compare to Solaris 10 11/06.
    Good Luck!

  • Core 2 Duo and solaris x86 11/06 works for me

This is FYI, since I seen (and posted) problems, but I haven't seen the solution posted.
I have successfully gotten solaris x86 11/06 to install and run on my core 2 duo machine. I had tried solaris x86 06/06, but I could only run in 32bit mode until patch 118855-19 was installed. It looks like 118855-33 is the baseline for 11/06.
With 06/06 I had to edit the grub command and add " kernel/unix" to the end of the 2nd line. This would force 32 bit mode rather than 64 bit. If I tried 64 bit, it would enter an endless reboot cycle. Once I installed the patch to 118855-19 I could run solaris 10 06/06 in 64 bit mode without issue.
Again, since solaris 10 11/06 is at 118855-33, it runs on my core2 machine straight from the install.
    Hope this helps

On a laptop there is little point with running a 64-bit operating system unless it physically has more than 4gb of ram, or if you are processing datasets exceeding 4GB of ram. Unless you're into assembly or use Solaris for some reason to manipulate media, little is to be gained by using 64-bit versions if anything. The increased pointer, integer, and padding causes more memory to use for the same software, most software on 64-bit operating systems runs in 32-bit mode because there is no need to have 16 exabyte memory addressing capability for anything but media encoders, giant databases, or extremely bloated single-threaded software. Sun Java Creator takes a heck of a lot of ram, but even at peak it's still under 4GB. If you move files bigger than 4GB, the ability to memory map all 4096MB might have less overhead on a 64-bit operating system, but generally from an end-user perspective, especially on a fast Intel or Opteron system, you won't notice the difference much. Solaris is bi-arch, a large chunk of Windows Vista and XP x64 is bi-arch, and most of FreeBSD and Linux are bi-arch in 64-bit versions, as I said, no point in making everything 64-bit. 64-bit device drivers is an issue for every OS, you should stick with 32-bit on a laptop, and hold off on desktops unless you need extended assembly registers available only in 64-bit mode.

  • How to restart services in windows and solaris environment?

I need to start services running in windows and solaris platforms with java code. I have a fair idea how to do in C++ . So wondering if same can be done with java. .. Please help me out!
    Thanx

you may also like to look at the wrapper project on source forge. It lets you set up services under any O/S with full control of the JVM that is running.
Btw my previous answer only helps you under MS, didn't notice that you wished to know how to do it under unix. If its a non-java service, you will need to determine what platform your on and then perform the appropriate action.

The client you are using has nothing to do with what permissions a particular user may or may not have, either at the OS or DB level.
You say it is giving errors, but you didn't think giving the acutal specific error message might be needed to help you diagnose the problem? My crystal ball is out for repair.

,in HPUX, "mailx" is working without sendmail daemon. but in Solaris, "mailx" is not working without sendmail daemon.
I'm not good at those sendmail site. my knowldge of UNIX is very general, not specific and expertized. so need your help.
Why it works without sendmail daemon on HPUX, and why not on SUN which is not working sendmail daemon ??

    Hi,
do you have a mailhost entry in /etc/hosts pointing to your relay hsot?

  • Qt QMake is missing - Solaris 11 and Solaris Studio 12.3

    OS: Oracle Solaris 11 - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/overview/index.html
    Development tools: Solaris Studio 12.3 - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solarisstudio/overview/index.html
Hi, I want to make Qt desktop applications for Oracle Solaris 11, and Solaris Studio supports Qt projects. However the binary QMake is missing.
    Is it available somewhere?
    Thank you a lot.

Here's what I used to compile up (I think) 90%+ of Qt 4.8.4. The configure step creates qmake and the compile rolls along until it hits a lot of non standard C++ code. But you get qmake out of it. The tarball is the latest snapshot of the 4.8.x git tree.
Caveat: It's being built using Sun Studio 12.3 and the stdcxx library from my package site, along with a bunch of dependant packages from there. I never got Qt 4.8.4 to finish compiling with webkit, the 3rdparty/javascriptcore/JavaScriptCore/* files are truly awful non compliant code and error out every step of the compile. Sigh.
    Good luck

If you get this far you'll hit the dodgy code, but you'll have a qmake binary made. You can remove the -webkit option and it'll actually build qt I believe, but alas I need webkit

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Ssh connectivity(password less)  for oracle unix account in 11gR2 RAC

    DB : 11.2.0.2
    OS : Unix
While installiation of RAC, password less connectivity setup is required between two nodes to copying files and to run commands. This is mandatory before installation.
But after installation, is it require to have password less connectivity ( SSH) between two nodes ? By locking "oracle" unix account breaks ssh connectivity between two nodes. Even though it's not breaking cluster, but do we really need ssh connectivity once RAC db is up and running ?

it is also used when you apply patches but not for everyday 'normal' operation
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14203/prelinux.htm#BABJBAEB
Oracle Universal Installer uses the ssh and scp commands during installation to run remote commands on and copy files to the other cluster nodes. You must configure SSH so that these commands do not prompt for a password.

  • I seem to have at least two, and maybe four, iCloud accounts, across my iPhone, my iPad and my MacBook Pro. Can I combine them into one iCloud account?

I seem to have at least two, and maybe four, iCloud accounts, across my iPhone, my iPad and my MacBook Pro. Can I combine them into one iCloud account? I have been able to log into what appears to be three of the four iCloud accounts I have. Two of them seem to be remarkably similar, and one appears to be only for my MacBook.I think I know which one my iPhone is backing up to, as I successfully restored from a back-up last week. The fourth iCloud account I can't access via password or security questions. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Cheers,
