JSP and SQL

Dear friends,
plz do help for the problem.
I have a large SQL query(with a subquery into it) to Oracle database, using which I want to generate a report. The SQL query is quite large taking into consideration all the various parameters needed to generate the report.The SQL is tested perfectly on SQL Plus prompt and gives me the desired result .I want to make a JSP application out of it and give it to all users, so that they can change the parameters and get the desired report. The report contains some 10,000 records. I want to build the application for intranet usage. I am using all Javabeans to do most of the work and JSP page just uses these javabeans. Now I am in doubt weather such a long queryString can at all be executed using a thin client connection to database.
And if it executes, what will be the perfomance issues for such an application.
I have a separate web server running Tomcat 4.2.29, separate Oracle 8.0 on Windows NT, and a separate Windows NT domain server to validate the users. I have a separte java application running on these servers using visibroker 3, Oracle 8.
Kindly help me with a suggestion or some coding or any architectural proposal to make such an application.
sukrudra

thanks for reply.
There are certain things that i want to clear, i am handling all the plumbing type of work like closing the connections etc thru my code.Even my CPU speed is fairly good enough. but i am very worried about the nested subsqueries that i will be running thru the program.
It is here my performance and result come sinto question. My client get most of the records but some the records are getting lost towards the end.It is at this end that i cannot figure out what the problem might be.
Also do let me know your email.

  • JSP and SQL Queries

    Hello,
    If a JSP application needs Database connectivity to display some values, what is the best approch for the same.
    1. Using SQL connections with resultset
    2. Using Java Class and using the same in JSP.
    3. any other??
    what is the industry standard for the same.
    Thnx,,
    Girish

    JSP's are used to display a view (such as a user interface or a report). Database connectivity is business logic and you don't do business logic in JSP's. I would create a servlet to handle business logic and then put the database logic in seperate classes that you can call from the servlet. Then use a JSP with JSTL to display the results of the database query. Putting the business logic in seperate classes makes it reusable.
    Frameworks such as Struts, Spring, JSF, etc. work in similar ways, so I guess you can call it an "industry standard". In software development there is no such thing however, you develop to solve a problem, not to follow standards.
    If you want to do it this way I suggest you lookup these two things:
    1) how to make servlets and JSP's work together
    2) the Model View Controller pattern

  • Jsp and sql - very slow performance

    Hello,
    I am new to java and working on my site.
    I encountered very low performance when I have implemented this function.
    This functions counts responses for each ad.
    Could you share know-how about better implementation?
    in index.jsp I have this call:
    out.println("<td align=\"center\">" + getRecords.countOffers(A.getIdads()) + "</td>");
    this is getRecords.countOffers:
    public static int countOffers(int ID) {
    int offersqty = 0;
    try {
    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver").newInstance();
    Connection con = (Connection) DriverManager.getConnection(DBurl, user, password);
    Statement stmnt = (Statement) con.createStatement();
    String readTopic = "SELECT idoffers FROM `wishloft`.`offers` where idads='" + ID + "';";
    ResultSet displayTopic = stmnt.executeQuery(readTopic);
    while (displayTopic.next()) {
    offersqty++;
    displayTopic.close();
    con.close();
    } catch (Exception e) {
    return offersqty;
    }

    Well, for starters, when posting additional code, please use tags.
    As for "looking" correct, I would offer these suggestions:
    - Use a PreparedStatement instead of just a String to build your query (as I suggested earlier)
    - Since you are expecting only 1 record from your query, why use a while() loop?  If someone else has to come in and look at your code, it could lead to confusion.  Just get the first record and process it without any loops.
    Also, only you can tell us if it performs correctly, because you should know what the results are since it's your data.

  • Jsp and sql and dates!

    Hi
    When I try to run this statement I get the following error:
    ORA-01861: literal does not match format string
    "insert into ps_cs_stock_grants_hist values('90980','2002-01-07 00:00:00.0','ONGO','2002-01-07 00:00:00.0','1250','0','USD','96','NQ','2002-01-07 00:00:00.0','N','N','N','622745', '2002-04-17 00:00:00.0','1250','5','BEL_5C_DX ',' ','0','C', '2002 Ongoing Stock PartI ', '2002-04-17 00:00:00.0')"
    I know my problem is with dates as it works when I replace 2002-01-07 with 07-JUL-2002. Question is how? This is the code that creates the above:
    int i = myStmt.executeUpdate("insert into ps_cs_stock_grants_hist values('" + vEmplid + "','" + vGrantdate + "','" + vOptionreason + "','" + vBoarddt + "','" + vOriginalopt + "','" + vOrigacqpc + "','" + vCurrencycd + "','" + vOptionplan + "','" + vOptiontype + "','" + vSpliteligdt + "','" + vRefusegrant + "','" + vStockoptplan + "','" + vCommitment + "','" + vGrantno + "', '" + vRegisterdate + "','" + vRegistershares + "','" + vStockvesting + "','" + vVestingtemplat + "','" + vVpemplid + "','" + vVestcredit + "','" + vGrantstatus + "', '" + vComments + "', sysdate)");

    Are you asking how to convert your existing date to the MySQL format?
    What data type are you using for your dates? Here's a quick-and-dirty way, assuming you're using Date for your dates:String convertDate(Date date){
    GregorianCalendar calendar = new GregorianCalendar();
          String dateStr = new String();
          String months[] = {"Jan", "Feb", "Mar", "Apr", "May", "Jun", "Jul", "Aug", "Sept", "Oct", "Nov", "Dec"};
          calendar.setTime(date);
          dateStr = Integer.toString(calendar.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH)) + "-";
          dateStr += months[calendar.get(Calendar.MONTH)] + "-";
          dateStr += Integer.toString(calendar.get(Calendar.YEAR));
          return dateStr;
    }

  • Javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.sql.Result and arraylist

    Hi,
    I try to explain my problem, I have posted in another section of forum, but perhaps this is a better place:
    I'm trying to use MVC model, so I call an EJB from a servlet which returns me a javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.sql.Result object (this derive from a resultset of a query) and then I make this available to a jsp page.
    I've choosen to return an javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.sql.Result object because I'd like to use this syntax:
    <c:forEach var="profiloString" items="${listaProfili}" >
              ${profiloString.anything}
    </c:forEach>Now I need to put my listaProfili object in session and permit users of my application to add and delete items from it. Finally I will update my database with the new data from listaProfili object.
    If listaProfili is an arraylist I can easily add or delete item from it, but if it is a javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.sql.Result I don't know how I can do this.
    If I return an arraylist object instead of an javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.sql.Result object, I can't use "<c:forEach ..." syntax.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.

    So why didn't you think that the JSP forum here wasn't a good place to ask JSP questions like this one?
    You can use <c:for-each> with a List. That's how it's designed. I don't understand why you say you can't. Perhaps you were confused by the SQL tags in JSTL. But anyway, you should just return a List from your EJB and forget about using obscure internal JSP classes.

  • Problem with JSP and Java Servlet Web Application....

    Hi every body....
    I av developed a web based application with java (jsp and Java Servlets)....
    that was working fine on Lane and Local Host....

    You need to elaborate "not working" in developer's perspective instead of in user's perspective.

    it works fine.
    I am using Tomcat 3.2 and i have already made changes in server.xml for my jsp files thats why i can run my programs with the earlier path but dont know why its giving the error when i use javabean,

  • How to pass arraylist of object from action class to jsp and display in jsp

    I need to do the following using struts
    I have input jsp, action class and action form associated to that. In the action class I will generate the sql based on the input from jsp page/action form, create a result set. The result set is stored as java objects in a ArrayList object.
    Now I need to pass the arraylist object to another jsp to display. Can I put the ArrayList object in the request object and pass to the success page defined for the action? If this approach is not apprpriate, please let me know correct approach.
    if this method is okay, how can I access the objects from arraylist in jsp and display their property in jsp. This java object is a java bean ( getter and setter methods on it).
    ( need jsp code)
    Can I do like this:
    <% ArrayList objList = (ArrayList)request.getattribute("lookupdata"): %> in jsp
    (***I have done request.setattribute("lookupdata", arraylistobj); in action class. ***)
    Assuming the java object has two properties, can I do the following
    <% for (iint i=0. i<objList.size;I++){ %>
    <td> what should i do here to get the first property of the object </td>
    <td> what should i do here to get the first property of the object </td>
    <% }
    %>
    if this approach is not proper, how can I pass the list of objects and parse in jsp?
    I am not sure what will be the name of the object. I can find out how many are there but i am not sure I can find out the name
    thanks a lot

  • Jtds and SQL server 2000(Personal Edition) problem

    My application need to work in standalone mode without being connected to the network.
    I've installed SQL Server 2000(Personal Edition) on Windows XP platform. I've Tomat 4.1 installed on the same machine. My applciation based on jsps and servlets runs on the same machine.
    I'm using the jtds driver and I use the following code to connect to SQL Server.
    Class.forName("net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver");
    String str="jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://127.0.0.1/GH;tds=8.0;namedpipe=true;lastupdatecount=true";
    It works fine as long as the machine is connected to the network. Once it is unplugged, it gives me the error "ArrayIndexOutofBounds Exception-1".
    But my application needs to be run on a machine where there is no network at all. In the above string I tried to change 127.0.0.1 by computer name and removed namedpipe parameter.
    str="jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://mypctds=8.0;lastupdatecount=true";
    But it gives the same error. Any idea on this?

    Infact SQl server is not listening to 1433 port. When I telnet localhost 1433, it is not connecting. I checked up Server N/w utility and Client N/w utility, both TCP and Named Pipe are enabled. Only if I include namedPipe=true, it works and it requires network connection to be present.
    Under Server network utility, if I choose named pipe, the default value shows \\.\pipe\sql\query. I tried to remove \\ so that it doesn't take the network path. But it doesnot work. ANy help?

  • Syntac error in JSP and MySQL

    HI guys,
    I have been facing another problem. The codings below. Worked well with my JSP and Access database.
    Then I transfered my database to MySQL and it gives out syntax error in my SQL statement.
    CODE1:
         sql = "SELECT Week, SUM (Total_Inspected) AS ins, SUM (Total_Rejected) AS rej, SUM (Total_Accepted) AS acc, SUM (DPPM) AS dpp, SUM (Yield) AS yeel FROM Calc_Data WHERE MONTH(Inspect_Date) ="+bulann+" GROUP BY Week";
         ResultSet rs = stm.executeQuery(sql);
    CODE2:
    String query   = "SELECT ID, Model, Lot_No, Lot_Qty, Inspected_By, Reject_Desc, Area_Concerned, Location, Remark FROM OQA WHERE Customer = '"+customer+"' AND Inspect_Date =#"+tarikh+"#";
    ResultSet rs   = stmt.executeQuery(query);

    Whenever you have this type of problem, the easiest
    solution is to take the sql and try running it
    directly. For MySQL, you can either use the
    command-line client, or there are a few graphical
    clients that can handle it. Just type in the query,
    run it, and let the database itself tell you what the
    error is.
    In any case, you probably won't find much useful
    advice on a JSP forum, esp. since the problem has
    absolutely nothing to do with JSP.Indeed - I agree with this. - MOD

  • How to upload an html file using jsp and jdbc

    Hi,
    im trying to upload an html page using JSP and jdbc. but of no success.
    my aim is to keep some important html pages in the database.the file size can vary.the file has to be selected from a local machine (through the browser) and uploaded to a remote machine(where the databse resides).
    any help/sample code or pointer to any helpful link is appreciated.
    thanks in advance
    javajar2003

    When uploading a file, I use a byte array as a temporary buffer..
    So, you should then be able to store the byte array in the
    database as binary data.
    example>
    //Temporary Buffer To Store File
    byte[] tmpbuffer = new byte[860];
    //Some Code To Upload File...
    //File Should Now Be In Byte Array
    //Get DB Connection and execute Prepared Statement
    Connection con=//GET DB CONNECTION;
    String sql=insert into TABLE(page) values(?);
    PreparedStatement ps=con.prepareStatement(sql);
    ps.setBytes(1,tempbuffer);
    ps.executeUpdate();
    //Close PS and Free DB Connection
    ..... and this method looks like you dont even have
    to store the file in a byte array, you can just give
    it the input stream.
    ps.setBinaryStream(int, inputStream, int);
    You may have to make several attempts at this. I have
    uploaded a file and temporarily stored it in a byte array,
    but have never from there stored it in the DB as binary
    data.. but this looks like it'll work.
    Good Luck!
