  • Best Practical JSP Book for PHP developer

    Hi Friends,
I am new to JSP and want learn basics of JSP so that I can do simple web page works.
I am a PHP developer with one and half years of experience.
Can anybody tell me what is the best JSP book for beginners or any web link with lots of simple jsp example?

Before you learn JSP, you need to learn Java. I heard 'Head First in Java' is a good book. Install Eclipse IDE (its free) and work through some of the book's examples in it (as you read the book from cover to cover). Then Install Tomcat (its free) and the tomcat plugin for Eclipse (its free). Then read a book on JSP (cover to cover). I like the book 'JSP in action'. It covers both JSP and servlets. Then, create a hello world JSP in Eclipse, then a hello world servlet in Eclipse.

  • Good JSP book for beginners to intermediate level

    Hi:
I want to buy one book, could you suggest one?
how is "JSP 2.0: The Complete Reference, Second Edition"?
    thanks.
    -Z

well, that depends very much on your background. If you are really new to JSP and Java, I would suggset 'SAMS Teach Yourself JavaServer Pages in 21 days' by Steven Holzner. It is very simplified and easy to understand. However, note that since it is some basic, it doesn't cover a lot of in-depth details.

  • Suggest a good JSP book

Can anyone suggest a Good JSP book for a intermediate level Programmer.
It should have good working examples of JSP model 2 architeture and also on how to use Tags in JSP

  • Good book for JSP

    Hi all
Can u pls just me a good book for JSP especially for beginners other than "Core Servlets and JSP" by HALL .The customers review for this book in amazon.com is very poor .Pls help me.
    Thanx in advance.Bye

When I went to Amazon to look at the reviews I saw that Hall's book got 4.5/5.0 stars based on 217 reviews.
Three reviews are listed in detail, and two of those are negative, so I can see where the OP got his negative view of this book.
But all 214 of the others couldn't ALL be wrong, could they?
I have "Core Servlets" and "More Core Servlets", and I think both are very good. If the OP is a newcomer to servlets and JSPs, I know these will be a good enough introduction.
These books do suffer from the same problem that a lot of computer books do: advancing standards. JSP and JSTL have moved on since Marty Hall wrote these books, so he's not always 100% up to date. But the basic information is well done.
If the OP still objects to Hall's texts, I'd recommend getting a servlet/JSP book that discusses the latest standard, if possible.
Jason Hunter's O'Reilly book is also good, in my view. - MOD

Can somebody please suggest some good books or sites for learning jsp programming which includes advanced topics of jsp as well. Not just a crash course like jsptut. Also are there any other prerequisites to learn jsp apart from html knowledge.
    Thanking in advance.

The Head First Servlets & JSP book is great.
Online tutorials are available from Oracle/Sun and many others.

  • Book recommendation for newbie

I know the basics of Flash CS4, and would like to extend my knowledge by learning about ActionScript 3. My background is in graphic design (not math, not programming). Can anyone help with a book recommendation that would get me started with the basics of ActionScript 3?

Thank you for your book recommendation. This sounds like an excellent book for learning Flash. From the description on Amazon, the emphasis of this book is on learning Flash with just a little information about ActionScript 3. Perhaps there is enough ActionScript 3 information in this book to get a good foundation with ActionScript, to learn the terminology and syntax?

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • In need of a jsp book :)

I'm planning on converting a asp website to jsp and I need to figure out the following:
1: servlet that gives out connection objects from a pool and manages "lost" connections to a mysql db
2: a bean that has getConnection and closeConnection that is used on every jsp page.
3: servlet/bean that can check size/dimesions/filetype on a remote url image
4: Figure out what users are logged in at every given moment. result: x users are on, these are user1, user2, user3. automatic removal when session runs out. probably need a servlet for this.
Its been 3 years since I've touched java so i hope you guys can recomend a jsp book that can answer these questions for me and help me get started with this project?
    Thanks :)

Yeah youre right, I should have specified that.
    I got these books:
deitel java how to program 3rd edition
deitel advanced java 2 platform how to program
the last ook has a servlet and jsp section ut I suspect that java has evolved since then so thats why I'm asking if you have any other suggestions that offer more than 2 chapters. Its really basic the stuff i have :)

  • Good book for J2EE?

I know Servlets and JSP and i want to enhance my knowledge with programming and also i have to learn structs, ajax.
which is the good book for this.

You can log into http://en.wikipedia.org and search for EJB to see what its about, and read about what that article says about the Spring framework.
Although there are many IDEs out there, I recommended Eclipse IDE because its free and is used by a very large number of professional developers. Also, just reading books isn't much help if you don't have a platform to try things out in. Normally when you are starting out in Java, its recommended that you work with java in a text editor and run code on the dos command line to get familiar with that before moving onto an IDE. If you want to read more on this topic, one links is: http://www.javaworld.com/community/node/4587 Sorry, I'm not going to get into an IDE war on which one is best or more likely to be used by a future employer. I haven't come across any unbiased articles that really stand out on this issue.

  • What's a good beginning JSP book in 2002?

I'm looking for a good book for beginners that will give practical information about Servlets and JSP. It should discuss using JSP with a MYSQL database, configuring the JSP development environment on a PC using windows, and do this in a clear and consise manner so that it can be applied in the real world immediately.
I've heard that "Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages (JSP)" by Marty Hall is good. He also came out with a "More Core.....edition". Does the "More Book" cover everything in the 1st book?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have not read Marty Hall's book, but I do like java server pages by Wrox. It's heavy weight (3kg and covers a lot - I mean a lot). It is written by a bunch of professionals, and there is never a mention of ' this is beyond the scope of this book' as I have regularly seen in (say, Manning books - which I wouldn't waste any further money on!!).
Anyway, I reckon this is the best book I have ever bought , about 50 Sterling. Expensive, but excellent.
    Best,
    kev

  • Tips for Newbies

    Hey guys,
Java is really challenging at first. A few months ago I didn't know anything about programming. I didn't even know what a JDK was. So I thought I might share a few resources that have REALLY helped me! I am still a newb but these are things that really helped me get a start on Java.
1, This is a series of video tutorials. I think he has made about 80 videos in the series. Very good quality for learning the basics. I suggest starting with this.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl-zzrqQoSE
2, A book called "Java for Dummies: 9 books in 1" - this book also serves as a great reference.
3, Once you got a good solid understanding of the basics then a book by Bruce Eckel called "Thinking in Java: Introduction to object-oriented programming" - This is the Textbook for the course that I am taking right now. I am halfway through the book and he is great at explaining. I find this book a little bit tough even though I have already finished a beginners Java course. So beware, it's NOT a light read.
If you guys have any books or podcasts or anything that has really helped you, then please post it below so that other people, such as myself, can find out about it. Thanks.

Also: Don't chase performance. Correctness and good design are almost invariably more important. A few nice quotes on the subject [url http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Program_optimization#Quotes]here (the 2nd is my personal favourite).
    Otherwise: What Kayaman said.
