JSP Book Recommendation

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good JSP book. I currently program in Perl and PHP and would like to learn JSP. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Jim

If you want to know about Tomcat (free servlet container) as well, I recommend the "Apache Tomcat Bibl" from Eaves, Jones and Godfrey. This book explains how to install the J2SDK, Tomcat, MySQL and it gives the code of a complete web application with the MVC (Model View Controller) design pattern.
This may look like overkill, but I must admit that this is the book that explains how to build we applications using JSP and servlets.
Of course, the book of Marty Hall mentioned in the previous replies, is a must have !

  • JSP book recommendations? and another question

What book should I get to help with JSP development?
Also, if I have an access database with an OLE object and I use JSP to query the database, will the data in that field bring up the file?

I doubt you'll get an OLE object to show. Java doesn't know how to handle them so you'll have to treat them as BLOBs.
Maybe the browser will know what to do with them but highly unlikely. Maybe you can get a servlet to stream only the object while setting the contenttype properly, and setting the URL to that servlet (with a parameter to indicate the record to retrieve) in the JSP as an argument to an <object> tag.
Can't think of any other way...

  • In need of a jsp book :)

I'm planning on converting a asp website to jsp and I need to figure out the following:
1: servlet that gives out connection objects from a pool and manages "lost" connections to a mysql db
2: a bean that has getConnection and closeConnection that is used on every jsp page.
3: servlet/bean that can check size/dimesions/filetype on a remote url image
4: Figure out what users are logged in at every given moment. result: x users are on, these are user1, user2, user3. automatic removal when session runs out. probably need a servlet for this.
Its been 3 years since I've touched java so i hope you guys can recomend a jsp book that can answer these questions for me and help me get started with this project?
    Thanks :)

Yeah youre right, I should have specified that.
    I got these books:
deitel java how to program 3rd edition
deitel advanced java 2 platform how to program
the last ook has a servlet and jsp section ut I suspect that java has evolved since then so thats why I'm asking if you have any other suggestions that offer more than 2 chapters. Its really basic the stuff i have :)

  • Best Jsp book with practical approach

    hi
    I am new to JSP.
I wish to learn JSP with more of practical approach.
I have already gone through "Head First JSP and servlets"...but it is more dedicated towards SCWCD...
so this time i wish to take sugessions before picking up a book...
I need a book with is much more of practical approach...
    covers traps in JSP....
    thanks.

Core Servlets & JavaServer Pages is the book I used when I was learning. It helped me get started real easily.I thought Marty Hall's books were OK, but I think Hans Bergsten's JSP book from O'Reilly is the hands down winner. It starts with JSTL right off the bat. You only learn scriptlet coding in a later chapter, almost as a last resort. I think that's the right way to learn JSPs.

  • Best Practical JSP Book for PHP developer

    Hi Friends,
I am new to JSP and want learn basics of JSP so that I can do simple web page works.
I am a PHP developer with one and half years of experience.
Can anybody tell me what is the best JSP book for beginners or any web link with lots of simple jsp example?

Before you learn JSP, you need to learn Java. I heard 'Head First in Java' is a good book. Install Eclipse IDE (its free) and work through some of the book's examples in it (as you read the book from cover to cover). Then Install Tomcat (its free) and the tomcat plugin for Eclipse (its free). Then read a book on JSP (cover to cover). I like the book 'JSP in action'. It covers both JSP and servlets. Then, create a hello world JSP in Eclipse, then a hello world servlet in Eclipse.

  • AJAX book recommendation

I have been a Java developer since 1995 and am very experienced in writing rich client applications.
I would like to learn how to write rich Internet applications using AJAX and am looking for book recommendations, preferably using Java EE for the server side.
    Thanks.

I think if you google Learning AJAX or AJAX tutorial, you will also discover very good books on the language and lots of suggestion with regards to book on the topic.

  • Book recommendation for Content Networking?

    Hi,
Is there any books outhere on cisco CSS, GSS for a good readup?
I know there's a whole lot of docs fr univercd, but was wondering if there are actually books on these products?
    Thanks.

Thank you for your book recommendation. This sounds like an excellent book for learning Flash. From the description on Amazon, the emphasis of this book is on learning Flash with just a little information about ActionScript 3. Perhaps there is enough ActionScript 3 information in this book to get a good foundation with ActionScript, to learn the terminology and syntax?

  • Book Recommendation for Fathers Day?

I'm waiting for Illustrator CS4 Wow! to come out here in the UK as my next book purchase and I already have a couple of basic manual replacement books which I am steadily ploughing through.  I wonder if anyone could suggest a couple of titles I could give to my kids to distract them from the inevitible cheap aftershave alternative?
I would like either a book that discusses more intermediate issues in Illy rather than the kind of very basic manual replacement books or if you're up for it, suggest a couple of illustration techniques that might be useful and help with my drawing.  I realised pretty quickly that a) Photoshop isn't good at taking your photos, b) Dreamweaver isn't that good at writing your code and c) Illustrator isn't up to drawing your drawings - Maybe a clickable "Inspiration Panel" should be a feature request?
So either any recommendations for drawing techniques that would be useful for digital art and/or recommendations for interemediate level Illustrator techniques?
    Many thanks
    Martin

Thanks for the suggestion but that's one of the books I already have
and think it's one of the best Adobe Software help books I have out of
all of them.  It's really well written and covers a lot of material in
a practical way.  The other Illustrator book I have is by Deke
McClelland which I find to be more like a reference manual than Mordy
    Golding's.

  • Book recommendation for newbie

I know the basics of Flash CS4, and would like to extend my knowledge by learning about ActionScript 3. My background is in graphic design (not math, not programming). Can anyone help with a book recommendation that would get me started with the basics of ActionScript 3?

  • Suggest some jsp books.

i'm an experienced web developper using either perl or classic asp. I want to ramp up to jsp.
It's not likely i'll ever build non web java applications
Can you suggest some books that would help me to get up to speed.
    Must i first learn Java?

I was hoping to see a reply to your post.
I, too, have experience with web programming (ASP) and previous experience with COBOL (don't laugh).
Though I'd love to do it, I just don't have the time to learn Java FIRST. I did a Google search on JSP and found a few references to books that took the approach of teaching JSP and then having you learn Java as a result, but then when I tracked down the books on Amazon, they were either very old or not recommended because of errors in the samples.
I will learn Java eventually, but right now I need to learn JSP/containers/servlets and so on FIRST, apply it to a web problem, and from there deepen my understanding of Java.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • New to J2ee. Book recommendations please.

    Hello,
We're finally moving our Servlet/JSP/JDBC app to J2EE. Can anybody recommend a
good book which covers in depth the following topics: EJBs(Session, Entity, Message
    Driven), JMS, JTA.
Found quite a few on Amazon. A lil' confused on which to buy.
We'll be running on weblogic 6.1. If there are any books written specifically
for that, that would be great.
    Thanks a lot.
    Raj

I'll steal Rob's thunder on this one.
    You need to check out:
J2EE Applications and BEA WebLogic Server
by Michael Girdley, Rob Woolen, and Sandra Emerson
It is written by BEA Engineers who really know this stuff and it is specifically
targeted at the WLS 6.x releases. Good book. I have a copy signed by the authors! ;-)

  • Good book recommendation

    hi,
i'll be working on a j2ee project in a few months and wanted to know if someone could please recommend some good books, i've done work with sdk and jsp, but might need to go further into j2ee aside from jsp, could someone please recommend a beginner and intermediate book on it.
    Thank you.

I am working through "Teach Yourself J2EE in 21 Days" (SAMS publishing) which seems pretty good. It includes all the main J2EE stuff - JSPs, database access, EJB (CMP and BMP), JMS etc, and has a lot of example code for you to try out.

  • Book recommendation for the intermediate level

    Hi,
I've just completed a collage java module which did a very good grounding in the basics, applets & awt. It also gave very short intros to threads & networking(sockets) but not much. I would like to follow this up with some more study on my own.
What book would you recommend (intermediate level)for more advanced topics like networking, GUI development, beans etc
    thanks
    Willie

You can also try the free tutorials at
    http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/views/java/tutorials.jsp
They range from very basic up, are free, and mostly have been very good.

  • Good JSP Book?

I am doing a bulletin board with JSP and could do with a good reference book.
    Could anyone recommend one?
    Thanks

I think Hans Bergsten's O'Reilly book is excellent.
Marty Hall's "Core Servlets and JSPs" is pretty good, too.
Shawn Bayern's "JSTL In Action" is a terrific book on JSTL.
I recommend ONLY JSTL for JSPs these days.
