JVC-HD250  Firestore FS 100 Workflow

Hey all,
I came in to a project with a GY-HD250 connected to a FS100 firestore box. What are the best settings for HD 720p final cut import? or any other suggestion you might have.
Thanks

Just connect your computer to FS100 with firewire and enable the drive in the Firestore menu and then transfer the files to your media drive. They come across at about 5X real time. Import them as required into FCP project.
I use a JVC HD111E that only shoots at 720p 24 / 25 / 30 and have the drive set up to record as Quicktime files. I'm not sure if there is updated software for 50p or 60p for the Quicktime format on the FS100. If not you'll need to use the default M2T codec. This can be rewrapped using software called Clipwrap, (not a conversion just a rewrap so there is no quality loss). This process is also very fast.
Put your tapes on the shelf for archival / backup purposes. If you need to import from the tape you can bring them directly into Final Cut as ProRes via firewire, see here for workflow; http://www.steadi-onfilms.com.au/vlog/12/04/2009/jvc-hdv-video-into-final-cut-pr o-6

  • Different frame rate of files from Firestore FS-100

    Hi,
I've been using a Firestore FS-100 on a shoot where we've shot DVCPRO HD 720p25. Because my version of FCP (5.1.4) can't bring in 720p25, we recorded the files on the firestore at a lower resolution- DV quality so I can offline them. When I import the files across from the Firestore, they come into FCP as having 50fps, although they still seem to be referencing the correct timecode.
My worry is when I go for the online and recapture the footage from the master tapes at full resolution, will the timecode be all wrong? Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers.

To finish, we're sending the tapes to a post production facility where they'll online using FCP 6 and grade using smoke.
My worry is that when they online, the timecodes from my edit will be wrong as the clips are 50fps whereas the original footage was 25fps. I don't know why they've come across from the firestore as 50fps.

  • Firestore fs-100 raw dv and p2 files from hvx200 dvcpro hd

does anyone have experience with the hvx200 (dvcpro hd) and firestore fs-100? i just took them out of the box, captured some 1080i 24p test footage but i cannot view them in fcp. my only options are to record in p2 format (not the card but in the firestore) or raw dv. p2 only creates mxf files which are unreadable and raw dv in fcp looks like a mess of random colors. no product manuals even mention the differences. any clues?

DO you not know how to import P2 files into FCP? FCP cannot read the MFX files in the state the are recorded onto the firestore. They need to be imported into FCP first.
To do this you have to go to FILE>IMPORT>Panasonic P2. You need to designate a Capture Scratch drive for what FCP will do is transfer the media from the Firestore, put a quicktime wrapper on it so FCP can read it, and deposit the files onto your media drive. There will be no loss of quality with this transfer.
1080i huh? You will need a firewire 800 drive (and I am not sure it can handle this footage) or internal SATA drive or external SATA Raid to play this footage back.

  • Firestore FS-100 Import fails, v.3.0

We shot footage on a Panasonic HVX200, using a Firestore FS-100, freshly updated to Version 3.0. Two issues emerged:
    1. when recording in 720p25 in the P2 mode, footage can be imported without a problem. Supposedly the HVX200 is able to film up to 50 progressive frames, allowing for some slow motion, but this first of all never worked (but that's not the issue here), and second, the moment we shot in anything other than in 25p, FCP tells me that the clips are corrupt or incomplete, although I performed a "Organize P2" on the Firestore.
    2. v3.0 of the Firestore is able to record, besides in P2 mode, in Quicktime as well as Quicktime PN mode. Unfortunately, the QT file cannot be viewed - FCP will tell me that that the codec is missing.
So, in the end, we have 50 minutes of footage which WE CAN'T IMPORT!! It can be viewed on the camera without a problem but not be imported. Any ideas, other than transferring the clips to a DV deck via Y/C???

seems pretty clear there are some serious CD/DVD compatibility issues with the latest itunes for windows ... would someone from apple like to comment?

  • Fce 4 and the JVC's 700 and 100(pal)

It's hard to tell you whether they are compatible until we actually see the specs for the cameras. Perhaps you could point us to the specs pages or give the full name of the model of the cameras?

  • FCP, JVC HD250 Camera.  HELP

I just purchased the JVC HD 250 camera and cannot get any signal into FCP. I need to have a live monitor in the studio and the ability to capture the shots in the edit bay at the same time. I have tried every configuration I can think of on the camera/fcp to accomplish this. jvc has not responded to my request for help and I thought I might be able to get some insight here.

The camera has an SDI output that is either SDI or HD-SDI depending on camera settings. also 1 other spigot is timecode depending on how a switch is selected on the side of the camera, can't remember what the other selection is. With the I/O you'll need to come in standard def SDI. hopefully your run isn't over 300' or you'll likely need a DA. I've brought stuff in using the client's camera in standard def direct to a DVCPro 50 deck and also captured other material to dvcPro HD and direct w/o TC into the Kona card in HD. check the downconvert settings to see how you get SD-SDI out. you may need to activate the spigot in the menu

Still unable to get HDV into FCP with this camera via firewire. Any suggestions would be appreciative. Am able to get DV in via firewire with the same camera, but not HDV.

  • Workflow Modularization and Performance

One of the great benefits of workflow system is the flexibility to develop reuseable, integrated processes.  In a recent discussion with a SAP representative he mentioned that when developing a workflow it is important to be mindful of the resources utilized when calling a sub-workflow.
I would like to get some input from anyone who has recommendations on when to draw the line on modularization.   For example, if you have multiple basic processes that are used repeatedly is it best practice to develop generic flexible sub-workflows that may be reutilzed in many situation or is it best to simply redevelop the process in each calling workflow to avoid the resources required to generate new workflow containers, bindings, etc.
Is there a general rule of thumb as to where to draw the line with modularization?  When does the use of multiple worfklow calls begin to impact the system performance to a point that negates the gains from less development effort?  Any opinions here would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nick D

    Hi Arghadip,
Thanks for the response and I agree that in most scenarios a custom resuable task/method is the best approach when applicable because this avoids the need for additional workflow elements.
The scenario that I have currently come across is that my client is looking into implementing a large collection of nearly 100 workflows, of which, many are all dealing with the same documents and users but just arranged in a particular order based on runtime data.   During review of the processes we noticed patterns that there are blocks of steps that are utilized in the same sequence over and over again for these processes.  Therefore, I am just wondering if it is best to seperate these processes into multiple sub-workflows or just design the workflows reusing the same tasks in each workflow disregarding the redundancy of these blocks of steps.
    Example:
    Workflows
    Workflow 1 = Block 1 > Block 2 > Block 3 > Block 4 > Block 5
    Workflow 2 = Block 1 > Block 2 > Bock 6 > Block 5
    Workflow 3 = Block 1 > Block 4 > Block 3 > Block 5
    Workflow N
    Blocks
    Block 1 = Task 1 > Task 2 > Task 3 > ...
    Block 2 = Task 4 > Task 5 > Task 6 > ...
    Block N
As always I will attempt to use conditions and resuable tasks/methods whenever possible but just looking for any input that people may have in regards to performance with sub-workflows.
    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Nick D

  • WorkFlow Reports ??

    Hello WorkFlow Experts ...
I have been asked to provide reports about WorkFlows that I can email to managers.
I know that there are a number of WorkFlow Admin Tcodes that can be used to pull out small amounts of data but I need to create large reports .... for example ....
Show me all WS90000029 workFlows that have been run from Nov 1 to Nov 30 across the entire organization (WS90000029 is our "Create New Position" workflow).  For each instance (and there may be hundreds) please show ....
    -  Initiator
    -  Company code of Initiator
    -  creation date
    -  effective date
    -  curent status
    -  if not completed show agent currently holding the WF
    -  Org Unit (OM)
    -  etc.
You see my dilemma?  I don't want to manually look for all of this data because it would take me many hours each time I'm asked for a report.
If there is no way to easily gather and download this type of data into an Excel sheet that can be emailed then I'll need to think about a custom report.  In that case I'll need to know what tables hold all of this data.  Do any of you know the main WF table names?
Thank you in advance for your help ....  fingers crossed that someone out there can help.
    Dan A

    Hello,
You definitely have to go for a custom report, or even better for a BI solution if you do have a BI environment. This because your requirement is not 100% workflow data. For example:
    - Company code of Initiator: that's something you'll probably find in HR data
    - current status: If you just want the status of your workflow, it is fine with the SWWWIHEAD or SWWLOGHIST tables. But if you want something more detailed and more meaningful for your users you'll probably need to status of the position itself. Or to look at which steps of the workflow you are at, which would require relatively complex manipulations in excel and probably a (too?) high number of data to download.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Best compressor settings for DVCPRO50 footage for DVD

    Hello,
I recently purchased a Firestore fs-100 and shot a football game in DVCPRO50. When I made a DVD after compressing it, using compressor, I didnt seem as clear and crisp as I thought it would be. When I import it into Compressor, what settings should I pick ect, in order to get the best quality DVD I can produce. Should I open up inspector and make alot of setting adjustments? If yes which ones? Any advice would be greatly appreciated......Thank you in advance for your assistance!!!! Also, I purchased Final Cut Studio in 2005 and my version of Compressor(version 2.0.1) isn't as updated as the current versions out there. Thanks!
    NJShooter

Just to let you know, I shot the footage in the football footage in the sun. I took your advice and used mpeg 2 and used one pass best option. I also used better deinterlace in frame control, and used 16:9 which it was shot in and my panasonic HVX200 video camera has 16:9 ccd's in it. Around the helmet and and some other body part during movement have what looks like heat on a side walk during a hot day. waves that are around even the unmpires arms and head as well. I shot the footage on a firestore fs-100 and had my camera and the tapeless capture device ( the firestore ) set on DVCPRO50 SD format 480X720 which is regular format not HD. It should look great compared to DV which I get shooting on tape. I have been reading all about compressor and perhaps its not compressor? I am using the quicktime setting in the firestore, which makes it easy to import into Final Cut Pro and am only putting a title in the timeline and then exporting to compressor. I pick the MPEG2 option in compresor for a DVD and am bummed at the end when I play the DVD on my 720 16:9 set. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated. Can you explain the ramping thing to me? Really appreciate your help by the way!!!!

Was shooting on a hvx and firestore FS-100. Generally set the settings so the firestore records as quicktime files. However, recorded some footage accidently as XMF files. How do I import and covert the xmf files so it can be imported and used in Final Cut.
    Using Final Cut 6.05

    EDIT
the function to "organize P2" is in a menu on the firestore
Check your documentation it's been a while since I used one
should have put this in my previous reply

  • Multiclip problem

The project in question was shot in 720p at 30fps on 2 HVX 200's and captured to two Firestore FS-100's.  One was shot in native and the other in non-native therefore the frame rate was 29.97 and 59.94 respectively.  Putting those clips on the timeline and editing was no problem.  However, it was impossible to do multiclip editing because this cannot be done in FCP when the frame rate of the clips is different.  When capturing to a FS-100 the footage is broken into small clips depending on the frame rate.  My brilliant idea was to export the clips as a QT movie and change the frame rate via compressor of the native clip from 29.97 to 59.94, as well as export the non-native clips as a QT movie.  This was accompished and I now have two QT movies, one from each camera, at the same frame rate (59.94).  I then imported the clips into a new project.  When I put the clips together on the timeline there is no problem.  I can edit using the razor and other tools.  However, when I make a multiclip and put that on a new timeline it needs to be rendered.  After rendering I cannot get multiclip editing to work.  No matter what I do or how I set the sequence it will not work.  I've either done something wrong or I'm trying to do something that cannot be done.  In summary, I'm taking two sets of footage with different frame rates, converting one to match the other in frame rate, exporting each set of footage as a QT movie, and importing the QT movie and trying to a multliclip and edit it in the timeline, but it's not working.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

First off, when you render the multiclip, you then make it not work as a multiclip. It needs to be unrendered.
But, it should show up as a GREEN render...meaning you can still play it.  If it is a RED or ORANGE render, that means that something is wrong.  Not fast enough drives, or odd codec.  What are the exact settings of the two clips?

  • Which Capture Cards has SDI with 4 inputs

Need to record speaker with four cams. Need to the ability to record live the four SDI feeds into Mac Pro with FCP Studio 2. The boss would like the ability to do live editing/post and when the speaker finishes to render a master DVD within 15 to 30 mins. Then have the DVD copied using the replicator DVD system.
Is any of this possible? If so, what type of Mac Pro would I need to buy and which capture card(s)?

    Hi
If Atheros said its has a 1394 connection so I assume it means the firewire.
The IEEE 1394 means the firewire connection which is available on this notebook.
Anyway, the WLan is not available and if you want to use the WLan technology on your notebook so you should use the USB WLan stick. This is the simplest way to connect to the wireless lan.

  • Displaying HD video through down conversion hardware on SD monitor

    Hey all,
I have been searching hard for solutions to this problem. I dont have the money yet to purchase a high end sdi hd card for my mac nor do I have the money for a sdi field monitor. I have been looking far and hard for a PCIe card that converts the timeline display in FCP (like when you watch the timeline on the lcd ofyour camera) to a SD monitor. The issue is that I will be working with dvcprohd, 720p60 with the pulldown removed (720 23.98p) and many people are sceptable.
True I could just use my camera to connect the monitor (frankly I am not to far off from going with this, just cause it will be another $600 for the blackmagic) but I am trying to stick with the "camera is for filming, computer is for editing" not using the camera in any way with the tapless system.
I could go with blackmagics decklink pro, but I would be forced to use my firestore fs-100 in non-pulldown removal mode, cutting down the amount of footage I can store by nearly 4 times (4 hours to 90min or so, they have a firmware upgrade that will remove the pulldown as filming to conserve space).
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=411259 &is=REG&addedTroughType=search
But with their card I am forced to use the highbandwidth 720p60.
So my choices are either that card and take the hit or, see if they make some sort of Firewire to s-video/composite converter that down converts the hd video to sd, like the blackmagic.
I am sure this is going to be a big market in the next couple years since alot of people will want to keep their sd monitors until it is completely needed to buy new ones, and a $500 card opposed to a $1500 monitor is not a bad option. Basically, I dont have $1800 to spend on a hd monitor and blackmagic hd extreme and I am trying to save all my cash for the hvx200 and fs-100 hard drive, almost $7000 alone for that!
    Any insite is gladly appreciated!
    Tim

Yep, someone mentioned the matrox to me on dvxusers too but for $1000, that is a price hike for me. The black magic has the same specs for under $600, just no dvi.
But now this begs the question, everything I look at states that it only can handle 720 60p, matrox, the blackmagic, they all say they can only display or down convert from a 720 60p. Now this is where it gets tricky, if I film at 720 60p with the varicam system, and then remove the pulldown while capturing, and even though the footage is now at 23.98, does that mean that the sequence preset which is set to 720 24p in my settings, is that actually a 720 60p based timeline and the codec that is displayed onto the monitor is 720 60p, not 23.98?
The reason I question this is that I found some 23.98 720 dvcprohd footage, put it into FCP and edited on a 720 23.98p (preset is called 72024p). When I exported it as quicktime video (raw) it stated in the get info window that the codec was dvcprohd 72060p, integer, little endian. So it seems like the base of final cut is using the dvcprohd 60p system. I am not sure if I am editing in 60p or 23.98p, regardless that it says 23.98 in the item properties window for the sequence, not the raw footage.
It seems like everything I read is 720 60p, but everyone is editing in 23.98 because that is the the preset option in FCP. It seems like the designers must know something that they wont specifically say.
I think if I were to buy the blackmagic, it may work out, I am just trying to confirm working ability before buying.
Curious, if I got the matrox and a small lcd screen to work with it, would I get the same accurate quality color correction ability as a normal field monitor? Or would I have to calibrate the lcd monitor somehow?
Thank you so much for your help everyone!
