  • Quicktime Pro and JVC .Tod files

I have a JVC Everio and I edit my videos on my Macbook using Quicktime Pro and Final Cut Express HD 3.5. In order to have my videos work on FCE, I need to convert (as many of you may know already). I havent had a problem doing so and lately Ive only been editing 3-5 min clips and quality isnt that much of an importance to me for those small clips as they are only for testing purposes. My question now is, if I want a long (1hr-2hr) video with a nice, clear, HD picture from my .tod files (CBR 1440x1080), what format should I use in Quicktime Pro, to convert the video from a clear .tod file, to a clear "" file??? Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks!!

Just thought I help out with the JVC community who's having the same problem I faced for months. They have actually now released new plugin that works with QT 7.4.x
I just got mail from JVC's escalation agent after months of mail ping-pong. I guess that appropriately make him E-Mail Specialist. You can download the latest Quicktime plugin for version 7.4.x on this URL
    http://www2.cli.co.jp/products/ne/updateqtc_for_gzhd7/qtc3eupdate.htm
I just hope Apple does not release security update and release v7.5.x anytime soon. But that should be JVC's responsibility to keep its customers well updated with its TOD format conversions.
Finally now we can update to QT v7.4.x!! Good luck. And spread the word.
PS: I have yet to see an update on JVC's website about this new plugin release. But I cab confirm that its already lost lots of OSX Everio HD camcorder users.

  • Is it possible to edit .tod files and mini dv files

Is it possible to edit both .tod files (jvc everio gz hd 7) and files captured from mini dv tapes on same timeline, either in imovie 6 or imovie 8?

However, the problem now is: the JVC footage is wide screen 16:9 (so black stripes top and bottom of screen), and the mini dv is 4:3. How do I get a movie out using either widescreen of 4:3?
You will have to make two decisions. This first is which aspect ratio to use: 16:9, 4:3, or 3:2. The second is whether to use a "Fit" within or "Crop" strategy for mixing the two. The "Fit" option will letterbox or pillar the clip(s) which do not match the aspect ratio. The "Crop" option will fill the screen and crop off the overages. You can however, set the viewing area of the cropped clip(s) using the "Crop" preview window. If the center of attention remains fairly constant throughout the clip, this latter option may work for you. If not, then you may have to "fit" the clip if you don't want to miss anything.

  • .mov files and FCE

Using MPEG Streamclip, I have converted several video AVI clips to Quicktime. I set the compression at H.264, frame rate 29.97 and converted the clips successfully. However, when I put them into my sequence in FCE, I still need to render them each time. What am I doing wrong?!

No, you can't delete it. But, it serves a useful purpose to those searching for answers to a similar problem.
    Thanks for posting back.

  • What is a .tod file??

I have a video camera and all the videos are .tod files and .moi files. How can I get these to play on my Mac.

You must have a JVC camcorder; the .tod format is proprietary to JVC. A .moi file is a JVC time-stamp file for the .tod file.
Depending on what model of camcorder you have, this video may give you the information you need:

If not, do a web search for your model of camcorder and "Mac" and you should find additional information on the subject.

  • Can fcp X import .TOD files without first having to convert?

Just hoping i can go in th fcp in one step instead of 3 very long ones...

fcp x cannot import JVC TOD files natively. you will have to convert them (preferably to prores 422).
you should be able to import files (with memory card inserted) or import from camera (with camera connected).

  • Hey, I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera, whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there, please help !

    Hey,
I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera.
Whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there,
    please help !

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

  • Convert .TOD (from JVC GZ-HD7) to FCE HD friendly format

I've found a few discussions regarding this exact situation, but I can't seem to get it to work - mind you, I'm fairly new to the Mac world so maybe I'm missing a key step here...
    1. I've downloaded the recommended MPEG Streamclip (someone mentioned .TOD is JVC's version of the MPEG)
    2. I purchased Apple's MPEG Playback component
    3. and made sure I have the latest version of QT
When I attempt to drop the .TOD file in Streamclip it says "Error: unsupported file type." Is there something I need to do to Streamclip in order to allow for the .TOD file to play? Maybe I need to do something with Apple's MPEG Playback comp, I'm really not sure. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks,
    AMH

For future reference - if you look just above your name on the right hand side of the monitor you will see a search box. I simply inputted "TOD" and immediately this similar previous link came up:-

Hope it helps - there will be others you can find.

  • Best Sequence settings for JVC Everio files (TOD format)

I own a JVC Everio camcorder, and I recorded some videos if Full HD (1920 X 1080).  I loaded the TOD files to my computer and converted them to MPEGs using the bundled PowerDirector program.  When I play these HD MPEG files in Windows Media Player, they look fantastic.  Very smooth color and no pixelation.
I loaded these files into a Premier Pro CS4 project because I need to perform some simple editing (trim in/out points, small rotation, and color correction).  I created a sequence using the AVCHD 1080p square pixel preset, which has the following settings:
    AVCHD 1080p square pixel
    29.97 frames/second
    Square pixels
    Progressive scan
    30 fps Drop-Fram time code
    48kHz audio
    I-Frame Only MPEG
Maximum Bit Depth, Maximum Render Quality
When I play the video files using either the Source or Project Monitor, the quality of the files appears degraded compared to what I see through Windows Media Player.  I'm concerned that I'm not using the correct settings to best work with this source video format.
Should I change either the Program or Sequence settings to optimize for this file format, or is Windows Media Player performing some magic in the background?
    Thanks,
    Matthew

  • Imovie08 and .tod files

i'm a little confused. i've been to many different forums and have heard different ways of converting the .tod files from my jvc gz-hd7 to bring it into imovie 08.
do i need mpeg streamclip to bring the files in? it seems like to use that program i have to buy the $20 plugin for quicktime.
i've heard people say to buy visual hub and a score of others. i've also read that people are just opening up imovie and can import it.
imovie does see my camera when i connect via firewire but it won't import the files - says it's importing but there's nothing there when i look at it.
i don't have the install disk for the camera (i just moved and it's in a box somewhere in the garage).
i guess i'm wondering - do i just need to find the install disk that has the cyberlink software or will i still need to buy the quicktime plugin or something else?
i tried downloading the everio patch for quicktime on the cyberlink website but i have qt 7.5 and that patch is for 7.4.
i'm very new to all of this and just want to get the stuff off my camera so i can record more things this weekend.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

your not alone.. i just purchased this fantastic camera second hand with the thinking that everything 'just works' on a mac..
Can't believe i have to use mpeg streamclip to convert a file, not to mention another 20 quid just to get through the first stage of viewing.
Please somebody throw me a bone, it must be simpler than this apart from buying a PC

  • JVC-HD7 and FCE

I recently bought the jvc cam and fce thinking all was OK and now everything I'm reading says the cam is compatible with iMovie and FCPro only. What have I got myself into? I avoided Sony's new cams for this reason. Anyone know if the two will work together?

    vidnewguy,
This info is regarding this camera:
JVC HD Everio GZ-HD7 camcorder - Digital interfaces
The JVC GZ-HD7 is equipped with three digital interfaces - USB, HDMI and i.LINK. USB is primarily for file saving, HDMI for digital viewing on large screen displays, and iLink streams high definition video in full resolution or 1440CBR mode. HD recorded material is down-converted for output in DV over i.LINK, or in standard definition via the analog component/ S-Video/ Composite output.
    HD recorded material is down-converted for output in DV over i.LINK;
This phrase seems to indicate that iLink (firewire) may work. You would have to configure the camera and see if it does.

  • .TOD Files JVC HD Everio

Can't import the .TOD files. Is there a solution other than the "get a minidv camera" response that seemed programmed into one of the posters here? I got this camera for a reason - where I use this there's a lot of sand. Tapes no likey sand. I know the engineers at Sony came up with a quick patch to handle this file import for Vegas so I'm sure the very talented engineers could do the same for Premiere without any trouble. :)
    Peace.

    Welcome to the forum.
Actually, I have PrE, because it handles several consumer-level CODEC's better than does PrPro. They are aimed at different users.
PrE got full, native AVCHD almost a year before PrPro did. Other formats/CODEC's are similar.
OTOH, PrE cannot handle P2 media, or RED footage, like PrPro.
For ease of handling consumer-level formats and CODEC's, with some exceptions, PrE is the better program.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
BTW - JVC seems to have dropped the TOD wrapper.

  • JVC GZ-HD7 .tod files, playback stutters in QT but playback fine in iMovie

I know there had been posts in other threads about this or similar, but I see that most had been answered, so I though it best to create a new thread for my specific questions.
I am able to convert my .tod files either in QTpro (using the JVC provided plugin for QT and simply doing an export) or using MPEG-SC 1.93beta. What I am trying to figure out though, is what has worked for others in getting the best quality from the .tod files, specifically when filming in 1920x1080 and not 1440 cbr mode.
It was recommended to use the Apple intermediate codec in a different thread. I have tried this and the h.264. The h.264 had the largest file size after export and the least amount of stuttering but it was still there. As a test I used only a 2 min clip.
It isn't a deal breaker since once the .mov's are imported into the timeline of iMovieHD they playback perfectly. But I would like to be sure that I am exporting correctly and able to playback the raw clips in QT.
Lastly, could anyone share with me how long it is taking to convert their clips and what methods used. It took me 1 hour to export a 9 min clip to .mov, and even longer for a straight import into iMovie without converting the .tod file first (drag the .tod to the clip pane.)
    Thanks.

Also, this is really stupid, but I have never set up a batch convert for file in MPEG-SC...Can you tell me how this is done so I can start a batch and come back to this machine in a week or so.
As with most things, the specific workflow may depend on a number of different factors. In this case, it may depend on the specific version of MPEG Streamclip in use and the specific nature/variation in processes required. In all instances, however, batch processing is intiated by selecting the "Batch List" List menu option. If you are using the latest 1.9b3 version, you can then:
    1) If performing a series of the same, simple, basic conversions/Demux operations (e.g., dumux a all of the SG1 season 1 VOBs to elementary streams), then simply press the "Add Files" button in the "Batch List" window and enter the specific information as requested. (I.e., select source files, how to prepare them, what conversion/demux operation is to be performed, specify the target name/destination, etc.)
    2) If you are performing more complex actions (e.g., converting a series of 16 x 9 source files to different cropped/scaled aspect ratios like 1.85:1, 2.35:1, and 2.40:1, then I would use the normal "work" window to select each source file and enter the different/unique settings desired for each and then press the "Batch List" button in the "Work" window to add destination file information and transfer all of your settings to the batch list.

I have a JVC GY-HM100U and when I try to get the video files (MP4 format) off of the the SD card I get the error message OSStatus error -12909...any thoughts?

To be more precise: You MUST shoot in mov. Then drag the Clip bins from the card to you hard drive. Then drag the clips to FCP timeline and FCP asks you if you want to change to the right codec and of course you say YES. Now you can start editing. Can not be more simple. This camera was specially designed for use with FCP.

Is there a way within the ios to do this or do I need to buy conversion software? If so, what is the recommended software?

I don't think there are ways in iOS can do this. some conversion software like this might do the right thing for you:
