app server
oracle 9i
jsp.struts/ojb/oracle
Our applciation uses struts, ojb and oracle; 100 users using the app all day; (in a client server fashion); but app is JSP.
We have major issue with garbage colelction. every day, once or twice FULL Colelction repeats itself for ever until we have to restart appserver.
our settings are 512MB for heap.
I have pasted few lines of one such instance. Can anyone help us with exp. and or suggestions to get us out of hole here.
THANKS SO MUCH>

we put in jprobe.... lots of CRAZY things.,...........Your application will use more memory when being profiled. I use JProfiler, but the behaviour should be the same.
- seems like our test app server goes up to use full
memory (256 MB) immediately upon start, even before
any one uses any app.?Sounds like you need to try increasing the inital memory size and set the max to 512 or 1024 MB or 1500 MB and see how it behaves.
IS IT MORMAL????? what has been loaded anyway???? curiousIt is normal if you are building a lot of data on startup. J2EE applications servers are often not very light weight and can load alot for libraries etc, which you will never use.
even if app goes to db and gets back same 5 rows, why does it create so man more objects.????/ is it creating new objects every time..??This depends on how you access the database. We had a EJB (another app server) which would perform an average of 685 queries to the database for a single but complex update.
The number of object genereated by this was very high.
Which We HAVENT started digging into code yet. we will
soon,,,,but wanted tpo throw up for exchange of experience.A very common way to optimise EJB is to not use them. IMHO, Use EJBs where performance is not critical.
For example, I have a J2SE application which can support 3 K concurrent users receiving an update every second on the default 64 MB.

• Does DestroyJavaVM() really destroy the JVM?

Hi,
If anybody has any advice on this issue I would really appreciate it. I use Java in my C++ application through JNI. For various reasons, once I'm done making my Java calls, I no longer want the JVM to be running. The trouble I'm having is that even after making the call to DestroyJavaVM(), the JVM seems to continue to run, as evidenced by the fact that if my code subsequently does something like throw a signal, the JVM picks up on it and spits out an error message. Here is a simple program that illustrates my point:
#include <iostream>
#include <jni.h>
#include <string>
using std::cerr;
using std::endl;
using std::string;
static JNIEnv* envHandle;
static JavaVM *jvm;
const string DISABLE_JIT_OPTIONS = "-Djava.compiler=NONE";
const string USER_CLASSES_OPTIONS = "-Djava.class.path=.:";
int main(int argc, char **argv)
      // Initialize a JVM
      JavaVMOption options[4];
      JavaVMInitArgs vm_args;
      jint jstatus;
      options[0].optionString = const_cast<char*>(DISABLE_JIT_OPTIONS.c_str());
      string userClassesOptions = USER_CLASSES_OPTIONS;
      string minHeapSize = "-Xms128m";
      string maxHeapSize = "-Xmx1024m";
      const char* javaLibs = getenv("JAVA_LIB_HOME");
      userClassesOptions += javaLibs;
      options[1].optionString = const_cast<char*>(userClassesOptions.c_str());
      options[2].optionString = const_cast<char*>(minHeapSize.c_str());
      options[3].optionString = const_cast<char*>(maxHeapSize.c_str());
      vm_args.version = JNI_VERSION_1_2;
      vm_args.options = options;
      vm_args.nOptions = 4;
      vm_args.ignoreUnrecognized = JNI_FALSE;
      jstatus = JNI_CreateJavaVM(&jvm, (void**)&envHandle, &vm_args);
      if (envHandle->ExceptionOccurred())
        cerr << "Unable to initialize VM" << endl;
        exit(-1);
      // Destroy the JVM
      jvm->DestroyJavaVM();
      if (envHandle->ExceptionOccurred())
        cerr << "Unable to destroy VM" << endl;
        exit(-1);
      // Do something stupid...
      int *a = 0;
      int b = *a;
}So, if you look at the 'Do something stupid' piece of code, that generates a seg fault, which I would like to handle myself, but it looks like the JVM picks up on even though I previously destroyed it and spits out the following message:
Another exception has been detected while we were handling last error.
Dumping information about last error:
ERROR REPORT FILE = (N/A)
PC = 0x0x8049def
SIGNAL = 11
FUNCTION NAME = (N/A)
LIBRARY NAME = (N/A)
Please check ERROR REPORT FILE for further information, if there is any.
Good bye.
Abort
Is there something wrong in the way I'm destroying the JVM? Does anybody know why this happens?
Thanks in advance!

You will need to wait for any thread(s) to finish and exit before the VM will shut down, and even then it may not be destroyed, depending on the JVM version.
Take a look at this reference:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/jni/spec/intro.html
        In JDK 1.1.1, the thread calling DestroyJavaVM must be the only user
        thread in the VM. JDK 1.1.2 has lifted this restriction. If DestroyJavaVM
        is called when there is more than one user thread, the VM waits until
        the current thread is the only user thread, and then tries to destroy itself.The spec does not promise the VM will actually be unloaded, so this part may depend on the implementation:

• Apple mobile device service has stopped working - continues

Hi
I have a 16GB iPhone with 02 in the UK.
My first iPhone with 02 had trouble receiving calls with about 90% of incoming calls going straight to voice mail. I also couldn't backup that phone as every time I tried with iTunes, i got the message "Apple mobile device service has stopped working" about a minute into backup.
This happened continually, I re-installed iTunes so many times, still with little luck. I tried a different cable too. All on a brand new Dell Vostro desktop PC.
So, I took the phone back to 02 with these problems. 02 promptly replaced my iPhone.
Now, I have exactly the same problem. I obviously have nothing to restore on the iPhone as I was never able to back it up in the first place.
Every time I try and backup the iPhone I get the error "Apple mobile device service has stopped working". Again i tried a different cable and have removed and re-installed iTunes several times.
Anyone any ideas?
Regards
D

I was having this same problem with my new iPad 3G. It was driving me insane and preventing me from syncing the iPad.
I removed and re-installed all Apple components from my computer as recommended (in the recommended order). But, the problem persisted.
The error message looked just like the one posted above:
Problem signature
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe
Application Version: 16.691.14.1
Application Timestamp: 4ba3b8fe
Fault Module Name: CoreFoundation.dll
Fault Module Version: 1.550.17.21
Fault Module Timestamp: 4b8cb530
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0000db6b
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
The SOLUTION came when i discovered that there were two copies of CoreFoundation.dll on my computer.
One was in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support.
The other was in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support.
I removed the copy of CoreFoundation.dll from the Mobile Device Support folder, and the problem vanished.
I hope this helps.

in order to check the flow, i just commented the System.LoadLibrary( ); call in the Pam.java file of JPAM, the flow works fine.
So, the JVM crash happens during Native call.

• What is happening to my audio data?

This happens continuously and I have just about had it and am ready to punch a hole through my computer: I have recorded a bunch of different tracks in Logic Express (namely vocal harmonies), but for some reason, when I am not looking and am working on automation or other track adjustments, I will come back to find that large pieces of audio data have been moved around, and things are usually off by about 2-3 seconds. When I double click on the track itself, a bunch more audio data is displayed under the data in use, and I can see other takes that I have done. Unfortunately, I cannot move any of these, and I cannot put the intended take back where it was because the end of it has been simply cut off and will therefore leave another blank 2-3 second space so there is no use.
Can anyone please help me? This is one of the most irritating things I have ever encountered on this machine. Please someone help me with this. Thanks.

Unless you give us the URL we can't possible begin to help.
Happy Holidays

• Everytime I open a new window I get this error: A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://tavgp/content/libs/include.js:595

This has been happening continuously for the last few days. Firefox then becomes unresponsive for 5-10 minutes or crashes. It's a real hassle.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• How can I stop Flashplayer freezing up/stop working....asks if I want to continue or exit?

This happens continually when click on something ...and cannot get cursor back for a few seconds....will not link or open a page.....asks do I want to stop plugin or continue.
Thanks!

I think I found the solution to my problem. I went to All Programs then to Administrative Tools then to Task Scheduler and found that my Flash Player somehow got set to update every few minutes (how did that happen!?), and edited it (by going into the Trigger Tab, and reset to update once a week. Hope that 'fixes' the problem....
Time will tell...fingers crossed!
Anyone....ideas about this?

• Internet Connection Continual Disconnect

I just bought a new MacBook, and I am having a problem with the internet connection. While I am using the internet, every 15 minutes or so the internet will stop working, however will still have full bars and still connected.
If I click on "network diagnostics", the ISP, Internet and server have all failed. If I press "continue" the diagnostics will run and the internet will work perfectly again. This happens continually, on any internet connection that I use.
Would anyone have any ideas what is going on? The apple store also has no idea.
Thank you for your help.

I have the same issue as well. I moved into a new place a couple months ago. My roommates all use laptops with windows and have never had an issue. I've never had this problem until moving in and using their wireless router.
The router is a Dlink WBR-1310. Since its such an old modem i made sure to update the firmware and with their permission tried some stuff I've read about online. Using iStumbler i see that our signal is usually right around 50% and noise is always 9% (and according to my macbook: Signal / Noise: -52 dBm / -96 dBm). I've changed the security WEP to WPA2-auto, and have switched channels a couple times in an effort to use one that's not occupied by someone in our area. Nothing has improved the constant dropouts.
I'm convinced it's the router, seeing as I've never had this problem with any other router before. However, since I moved in I have not taken my macbook out of the house or used another router. So i guess its possible that my airport's f'd up. Everything is up to date and I almost always immediately download system updates so who knows.
I've tolerated this for the last few weeks because i realized that I never had trouble getting online initially after first turning on my macbook or waking it up from sleep, just after 10 or so minutes of use. So since that discovery I started to just put it to sleep and let it rest for a few seconds and wake it up...suddenly my internet connection is restored. Whats odd to me is exactly the same problem you have. The first few times it happened I always ran the network diagnostic and kept receiving results that everything was a - okay.
Sorry for such a long response that in no way helps you out, leberdt. I've just postponed getting an apple id and posting on here for a while now...had a lot of things to say i guess. Anyway, good luck! Hopefully a computer network whiz on here could enlighten us.

• Envy Touchsmart 15-j105sa Continuous USB Device Dropout and Reconnect

New Envy Touchsmart 15-j105sa running an up to date version of Windows 8.1.  All HP driver and Windows updates completed prior to installing software and other USB devices except for USB WiFi adaptor and software.
USB 2.0 HDD keeps disconnecting from the port and then re-connecting.  This happens continuously about once every 30sec.  It re-connects after about 10sec and then disconnects again after about 30sec.  When connected everything seems to be working fine.  Access to the HDD is OK, it shows normally in Device Manager and Safe Disconnect.
I have uninstalled the USB drivers and restarted.  The problem persists.  I have powered the USB HDD externally.  The problem persists.  I have tried connecting to 3 of the 4 USB ports.  The problem persists.  The USB 2.0 HDD works normally on other Laptops.  When data is being transferred the dropout does not occur.  It appears to be associated with idle time on the USB HDD.
I don't get the problem when I attach a USB 3.0 HDD.  It stays connected with no dropout.  Flash drives don't have the problem.
I also have a similar issue connecting a USB Alfa WiFi Adaptor.
UPDATE:  The problem is related to an External Combo Drive.  2.5" Sata to USB /eSata HDD External Enclosure.  As long as the HDD is being accessed then there is no dropout.  As soon as the disc becomes idle I get a cycle of disconnects and reconnects as described above.  I would like to understand the cause of this issue because it will help solve the massive connect/disconnect hunting that I get with my external USB wifi adaptor.  Once the Alfa Wifi adaptor gets happy with its connection the hunting stops and it behaves normally.

Are you using the charging USB 3.0 ports or the standard USB 3.0 port to connect the device?
Charging ports have a + next to them. It really should not make a difference, but it might with your keyboard since it does require more power then, perhaps a mouse.

• Strange Memory Spike Occurring

Hi all,
I am encountering a weird memory spike running an application under Java 1.4.1_02 and I am wondering if anyone else has encountered it, it knows what the problem might be.
Here's what happens. I am running an application that we develop that (as a simplified explanation) processes requests. Everything ran fine under Java 1.3.1_06 and we are investigating moving it forward to 1.4.1_02. When I start up the system, I run through 4 identical requests as a test. The first three requests go through as expected. On the fourth request, one JVM (there are several JVM's going, communicating through CORBA) starts a vicous memory grab that pushes it's real memory usage from 20MB to 90MB and its virtual memory usage from 30MB to 1.6GB. While this is happening (takes about 2 to 2.5 minutes) everything else in the JVM stops happening (timers don't expire, code isn't executed, etc). After the memory consumption reaches its peak, the system slowly starts recovering the memory, back down to its orignal size (another 2 to 2.5 minutes.) At this point the system resumes operation exactly where it left off and works fine from there on, until it is restarted (I have run up to 10000 requests through afterwards without a problem.)
The memory usage happens in a two step process. It starts with one big jump of about 300MB (total between the real and virtual memory), then continues increasing in a gradual increase. The decrease happens in a mirror of this, with ta gradual decrease for a while, then a big drop at the end. The memory graph would look somehting like this:
                      1.6GB
              330MB/        \330MB
                   |        |
                   |        |
20MB___________|        |___________ 20MB
                   ^        ^
                   |        |
              processing  processing
                stops      resumesI have run the process with both -Xrunhprof and -verbose options, and neither show anything that might be the cause of the problem. I then tried attaching to the process with a remote profiler and the problem did not occur. Further playing around with the command line showed that using -server as an option made the problem not occur.
My question is what caused it in the first place? I have concerns about this re-occurring elsewhere, especially if adding the -server option doesn't fix the problem just move it somewhere else.
Can anyone give me any help?

Hi Daman !
Your problem definitely seems to be due to a known bug in jdk1.4.1
- that the heap memory exceeds the allocated ones (default=64mb).
In your case the process stops for some time in your application because the garbage collector is running. Since the GC has to reclaim a large amount of memory it takes some time- thats why the program stops executing.
Use a profiler like JProfiler to confirm if this is due gc activity.
1) Plz try different combination heap sizes
of -Xms and -Xmx setting for eg (-Xms128 -Xmx128) or dont use it at all.
2) But a preferred one will be to upgrade to j2se1.4.1_02.
Hope this helps !!

• USB causing file corruption?

Hi all,
I've been using external usb drives on my macbook for a while now, both harddrives and flash sticks. I recently noticed that some photo's I copied on a flash drive got corrupted. After doing some research I found that a lot of the files I store on my harddrive are somewhat corrupted. I verified by downloading some files and checking MD5 hash and also copying files and checking integrity with par2 hashes.
The harddrive is directly plugged into the macbook so power can't be an issue. I pretty much eliminated faulty formats by testing with multiple devices. That leaves me with either a hardware defect or faulty USB drivers. Any ideas or similar experiences?
Ps: I do have macfuse installed, though I ought it unlikely to effect things considering corruption also happens on HFS+ formatted drives.
Edit: It might be worh noting that corruption doesn't seem to happen continuously; maybe in 1 out of 3 downloaded/moved files.

• I think I might have downloaded malware and want to know if there is a program I can run on my computer to look for malware

I was on a website and a tab with another website that looked sketch came onto my screen. I couldn't exit the page and a message appeared on my screen saying something about safeguarding my mac and in a panic I just clicked "Okay" because there were no other options. The popup message did not say anything about a download, but immediately something downloaded to my computer so right away, without looking at it, I moved whatever had downloaded from my downloads into my trash and then emptied my trash. I know I should have read the message or tried to force quit my browser but I panicked and am now concerned I may have downloaded some type of malware. I am aware that there are no mac viruses "in the wild" but am concerned I may have downloaded spyware or a trojan. I was borrowing a family members computer and they do not know if they had any antivirus software but I am assuming because they do not know that they do not have any sort of security downloaded other than what comes with the mac. I was wondering if there is some sort of program I could run to check for malware and what I should do with the computer in the meantime, like maybe have it shut off? And in the case of some sort of malware, does that mean I need to get a new computer? I'm just scared and know I should have been smarter about the situation but now I don't know what to do.

It's not malware. It's a JavaScript scam that only affects your web browser, and only temporarily.
Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

• My mac is completely blocked because of a pop up that doesn't let me open any app or safari's page. What do i have to do?!?!

I was on the internet playing a game them suddenly a pop up page came on and i pressed the "x" at the top to exit (like i always do) than the page askes me "are you sure you want to leave this page?" The text after this is so long that i can't say "leave this page" i tried to open other apps or pages but it tells me that i have to leave this page. I have no idea what to do. I can't even turn off the computer because it tells me that before i have to leave the safari... Please help!!!

There are several ways to recover.
1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press the key combination command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
2. Press and hold command-W. You may hear repeating alert sounds. While holding the keys, click the OK button in the popup. A different popup may appear, which you can cancel out of as usual.
3. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
4. If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. None of the windows and tabs will reopen.
After closing the malicious page, from the menu bar, select

• HT4993 Why did I see a pop up window on my iPhone 4S that said "Apple Back Door"?

I went to Berlin, Germany and took my iPhone 4S. Before I left, I asked my carrier (Sprint) and the ignorant technician told me that if I wanted to use my phone for texting and calling locally in Germany, I just needed to go to any phone store and buy a sim card. Well, I did, and the sales technician in Germany was not well versed with iPhones, so he tried twice to put in a Vodophone sim card, but it wouldn't work, and a 4 digit blank pin number page appeared, which at that time, I realized my iPhone was LOCKED. Sprint failed to tell me that. In any event, I used the phone over wifi to acess FB and other apps, which worked okay. Sprint also failed to tell me that I could have used iMessage over wifi to text my friends in Germany who also had the 4S, shame on Sprint, they shouldn't put an 18 year old at the desk who doesn't know blank! This time, I was really upset with Sprint.
But my question now, is when I opened a few apps, and it only happened twice, once in Germany at the Airport when I was about to leave, and once when I arrived back in the States, once I got off he plane and searched for a signal (I kept the iPhone in "airplane" mode all the time I was in Germany), a window quickly appeared and disappeared, but all I could see was on the top header of the white window, it said, "Apple Backdoor", and quickly turned as if was apage, and disappeared, and I still continued on. It didn't block anything I was trying to do on the phone, but I went to both Sprint and the Apple retail stores, and no one seems to have an answer, or even have said they never heard or seen such a window or app named "Apple Backdoor". Does anyone have any information on this? It is kind of making me suspicious of the technician in Germany, was he trying to access my iPhone's personal data (he took a long time)? Or was I being tracked by anyone, or perhaps government tracking because I was going overseas? I even tried to Google it, and all I come up with is something related to the FileApp Vault, which is about a Mac computer, not about an iPhone. There was an article written back in 2010, about the Indian Government exposing a flaw in the iPhones, accessing them through exactly what was worded "Apple Backdoor". Please, anyone, do you have any information on this, and do I need to take any precautions, or should I reinstall the new I OS 6 (the Apple technician at the retail store suggested it if I felt very uncomfortable).
"Apple Backdoor" - what is it, what does it mean - only for iPhones, not macs or iPads?

• IMAP error messages "Error while parsing IMAP response"

I'm getting thousands of IMAP errors every hour, can I shut those off?
My console log is flooded with them and it keeps me from seeing anything else
in the system log.  The IMAP errors happen continuously while Mail.app is running.
It looks like debug output from Mail.app !?!
IMAP server is Beehive Server -- it's my company email so I need to use it.
Windows Outlook (Windows 7) shows no errors, possibly they're silently ignored
on Windows.  My disk is writing almost continuously when Mail.appo is running.
Sample error:  (thousands are generated per hour)
Apr  8 10:29:18 Js-Coolio-iMac.local Mail[22903]: Error while parsing IMAP response (null): Incomplete response
              Remaining text: <    Gian Luigi<br>>
              Full text: <    Gian Luigi<br>>
Any idea how to shut these off?  I reinstalled Mavericks, no improvement as expected
since this seems to be Mail complaining about IMAP protocol issues.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.  And yes I've rebooted, reinstalled the IMAP account,
reinstalled Mavericks, etc.
