KDE 4.5 - bad X11 display behaivor - cannot run kdm(kde)

Hi there:
I got problems to run kde after reboot from the update yesterday. so long as i don't restart its running. when i restart my pc and it would run kdm, it kicks me out of X11, without any notice, X only appears for a few milliseconds. So i tell you what i have done:

After this i restart my PC and then kdm won't run anymore i think kde is broken, the same on logout, it kicks me out of kdm.
So atm i have fixed this with:
[x-ray@ArchMedia ~]$ yaourt -Uf /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kde*-4.4.5-*.tar.xz
[x-ray@ArchMedia ~]$ sudo vi /etc/pacman.conf
And add:
# Pacman won't upgrade packages listed in IgnorePkg and members of IgnoreGroup
IgnorePkg = kdelibs kdebase-lib kdebase-runtime kdebindings-python kdeedu-data kdeedu-libkdeedu kdegames-libkdegames kde

Display :0 cannot be opened

I just installed .7 on my new system. Everything went very well except when I try to get into kde by running startx. I edited .xinitrc to uncomment exec kde. When I type startx, I get a blank screen and my keyboard stops functioning. So I have no other choice then to shut down and reboot. When I look at the logs, I see the error
display :0 cannot be opened
Any ideas how to correct this? I did not have another kde session running on display 0 at the time because I had just booted into runlevel 3.

Problem fixed. Since this was a fresh install and I was only about a half hour into the install when I tried to run KDE, I decided to re-install in case something got hosed during the install or configuration of xorg (I rerun xorgconfig just in case before reinstalling). Since the re-install, it works fine.

How to start a second X11 display from within X ?

For a game i am playing (freespace2 open) i would like to run it on a second X11 virtual display.
Following Fs2_open_on_Linux#fs2_open_freezes_X i am able to start second display with xinit -- :1 , but this only works from console.
Also the method used there (copying the mit-magic-cookie) doesn't appear to be very user-friendly.
So i have 2 questions :
is there a way to give a user permanent permission to start a second display ?
can starting a second display be done from within X ?

If you using kde, you could make life alot easier if you need multiple xsession by running kdm...
I mean my system boots 21 second including starting KDM starting from xinittab... if I add it as a deamon in rc.conf it takes 36 seconds

Mac mini configure as X11 display?

Has anyone tried to configure OS X to turn a Mac Mini into an X11 display terminal?
I work in a Liunx environment and we are looking at a small 'PC' to drive a 30" display. Our X11 application would run on another box in a equipment room and export the display to the Mac Mini across a local network. I'm pretty sure I can do this in Ubuntu on the Mac but this seems like a waste and I would also lose the Macs video drivers.
My guess is that I would need to disable the OSX desktop and the run X via some kind of startx script followed by something like 'xhost +'.
Any help in this adventure would be much appreciated!

OSX has x11 installed by default now days. When you start it, it runs an xterm, but you can run any x11 apps you want. I'd test it to make sure performance is up to snuff for you, but it should work fine.

How to correct bad PDF display of Excel 2007 graph-Adobe Pro X?

Just installed Adobe Acrobat Pro X; previously had Adobe Pro 8, which worked fine. Have Excel 2007 files with an Excel graph and a JPG image on the spreadsheet tab. Both the graph and the JPG are too big, are displaced, and hide spreadsheet data, when the Excel file is Saved As a PDF using Adobe Pro dialog or Excel dialog, or the Excel Plug-In to Create PDF. For some strange reason, printing to PDF works, although that is limiting. All of the settings are the same for the Adobe Printer as Adobe Pro settings. Changing them or going to default did not help. Just did the latest update; that did not help.
The graph and JPG are too large for the PDF page. Paper printing from Excel still works fine. Producing a PDF on another machine with Pro 8 still works fine. Could not find this problem discussed anywhere. Using XP, fully patched. This should not be a complicated process, nor a complex spreadsheet. What is going on?

Regardless of the method and Adobe product used to create the PDF, including the Excel tool button, the single common factor whether the PDF correctly displays a JPG or graph in the Excel file that is being done at anything other than 100% size is whether the Adobe Printer or a Physical Printer is selected as the default printer in the Windows Printers and Faxes-Settings. This is true even though the printer is not being used. I have created the same PDF using every method/product and the results are always the same, and only properly display when either the setting is 100% size or the system printer is selected as Adobe Printer. This is true only after installing Adobe X (8 was previously installed, and worked as expected).

You say the settings for the printer work fine, but do not for PDF Maker (I am assuming this is what you meant). PDF Maker no longer uses the printer and the settings are independent. Check the settings for PDF Maker under the create PDF menu.

X11 DISPLAY troubles

We've been developing a Web Application in Windows, using the Sun Java System Application Server Platform 9 installed on the same PC. Just now, we want to move the web application into a Red Hat Linux Server, also with the Sun Application Server, and run the application with a host PC wih Windows. The application starts OK, but launches an exception (cited below) when it has to open a 'File Dialog Box'. The exception is:
Servlet.service() for servlet Faces Servlet threw exception
java.awt.HeadlessException:
No X11 DISPLAY variable was set, but this program performed an operation which requires it.
Note that we doesn't have this problem running the application in local using Windows.
Actually, the Red Hat Linux has no graphical environment.
How to solve this problem? It's compulsory to have a graphical environment in the server?

Your app apparently has a GUI, but you're running the program without a GUI. Do you see the conflict there?
Linux (usually) uses X11 as its GUI toolkit. The error message you're seeing is saying that it's trying to use X11, but the way you're running the program, X11 hasn't been properly set up.
A good way to deal with this is:
1) install Cygwin, including the X11 utilities.
2) start the X11 server on your PC. The command for this is "startxwin.bat", in Cygwin, I believe.
3) connect to your linux box. Either:
3.1) use the xhost utility to configure your PC's X server to accept
connections from your linux box, and then set the DISPLAY variable
on your linux box
or
3.2) use X11 tunnelling (e.g., if you're using putty) when connecting to
your linux box
4) then you can run the program

I am trying to start the Admin ACC from dynadmin. But when i click Start ACC in server VM . I am getting following error.
The ATG Control Center could not be started. Dynamo received the following error message from the JVM: java.awt.HeadlessException: No X11 DISPLAY variable was set, but this program performed an operation which requires it.

ACC is Java Swing based client UI so it requires a display. Try setting this on the shell where you are starting your server if you are on the same host:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
You might want to restart your server after setting this if you want to start ACC in server VM.
In case you are using PuTTY to tunnel through the UNIX machine then check if "Enable X11 Forwarding" is selected in PuTTY settings. You can find that option under Connection -> SSH -> Tunnels

Have you downloaded everything that is on the camera? If so format the SD card on the camera (will erase everything on the card).
If you have not downloaded everything can you see stuff on the camera? If you have a card reader you could try putting the SD card in that and trying on the mini. If your mini has a SD card slot you could try that.
In any case format the card on the camera before taking more pics.
Next time be sure to eject the camera from the Mac properly and turn the camera off before disconnecting.
EDIT: You might also check the camera's USB Mode is set to PC.

JMF in Unix-Shell: No X11 DISPLAY variable was set

I've got a client-server application. The server runs on linux and is started in the unix-shell.
When the server just sends out data which was received before, everything works fine. But when I'm using a processor (or a player) it says:
No X11 DISPLAY variable was set, but this program performed an operation which requires it.
How can I avoid this problem?

Parameter Page Displays "Page Cannot Be Displayed" while running report

Hi All,
I have a report which take 4 hrs time to execute the report
If i run this 4 hrs report,the report runs sucessfully when we see in particular
report server in application server.
But, we wont get any pop up to open report after executing sucessfully
at user end, A error message is displayed in only report param page like,
"The page cannot be displayed"
I Think only param page is expired but not form session.
We have also set the parameters like in report/conf/repsername.conf
engineResponseTimeout=30 and <connection maxConnect="200" idleTimeOut="300">
Also,In httpd.conf timeout is 3600 and MaxBlockTimeout in web.xml file
we have set "maxBlockTime" for long running report (4h)

If the content on your iPhone cannot be read by iTunes, then you will need to follow the directions in the popup and restore your iPhone to the factory settings. You can then try and restore from a previous backup.
