KDE 5 default

When kde 5 components will replace plasma and apps (4.x version)? it will be natural (I mean pacman -Syu) or all the time that will be different packages? will kde 14.12 apps land in Arch official repo?

ktatar156 wrote:When kde 5 components will replace plasma and apps (4.x version)?
In Arch? We have 3 groups: plasma-next, kf5 and kf5-aids. If you want to install new DE (Plasma 5) you have to type:
# pacman -S plasma-next
It should install new DE and unistall some parts of KDE4 (because they cannot coexist now)
BTW: There isn't (and will not be) such DE like KDE 5

As arojas said https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1485631 they should be in official repo soon.
But you must to know, that almost all packages in KDE Applications 14.12 are bugfixes for KDE 4.14.3 apps. Only few are building against of KF5. See: https://www.kde.org/announcements/annou … 4.12.0.php and https://dot.kde.org/2014/12/17/kde-appl … orks-ports As Mario Fux said: " We expect the porting of applications to Qt 5 and Frameworks 5 to happen over the next year or two."

  • KDE default theme got ugly

KDE 5's default theme, Breeze, started to look dark and has different icons after installing a custom theme from KDE's settings app. I tried reinstalling KDE, but no luck. How to restore the default, Breeze, a light looking, desktop theme?

edit: spoke too soon. thought twas a new style don't fret, i still use the kicker overlay and the colouers (even though in apps the grey is so light in the input fields that it hurts the eye)! work on the colours a lil more, would be great to find the sweet spot while remaining dark.

  • Wine + KDE -- default program for .exe on upgrade

I find that every time I pacman -Syu, WINE gets set as the default program for opening windows .exe files.
Since I'm a sysadmin for several mail servers, I occasionally have to open suspicious e-mails and see what they are, including examining the attachments. I'm worried that one day I'll accidentally double-click one of the .exe ones and that wine will run it.
I'm sure WINE doesn't have the level of windows compatibility required for spyware & viruses to do much, but it still makes me nervous.
I always go into the KDE settings and remove this file association as soon as I notice it, but I'm wondering if there's any way to make it stay permanently gone?
Is this something the package maintainer for WINE and/or KDE has any control over, or is this the wrong place to complain about it?
    ~Felix.

kensai wrote:Well, I am the wine package maintainer, so email me your suggestions and I will discuss with other developers. Thanks.
Oh, cool. Anyway, I think I figured out a way to fix it -- just remove this line from usr/share/applications/wine.desktop in the wine package:
    MimeType=application/x-ms-dos-executable;application/x-msdos-program;application/x-msdownload;
That'll stop KDE (and probably everything else that uses /usr/share/applications as its mime provider database) from automatically associating it.
I know the .desktop file will then be technically incorrect by not listing WINE as being a handler for any mime types, but this way users will have to set it up manually if they want the ability to run strange programs by accident ;)
You could also add a message about it to the pacman install, something like
==> by default, WINE is not associated with Windows executables for safety reasons.
If you want to run ANY Windows executable by just double-clicking it (NOT recommended),
you'll have to do this as root:
    echo "MimeType=application/x-ms-dos-executable;application/x-msdos-program;application/x-msdownload;" >> /usr/share/applications/wine.desktop

  • KDE Default Window Manager Setting File Location

I recently switched KDE to use Awesome instead of Kwin via the "Default Applications" configuration dialog. Unfortunately, using the same dialog to switch back to Kwin gives me a message stating that it can't start Kwin and it immediately reverts the setting back to Awesome.
I imagine somewhere under ~.kde4/share/config/ is a file that will allow me to select the window manager by hand, but I haven't been able to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction?

That's what I would've expected too! It turns out it was in ksmserverrc

  • I need help getting the kde default cursor in openbox

I know how to install the kde cursor but I do not no what it is called in archlinux. Can somebody please tell me what it is called

If I understand, you are using openbox but you want the KDE's cursor, without using KDE.
You have the theme but :
    - you don't know how to install it ?
    - you dont know the name/ the file path of the current cursor to change it by the new one ?
    - the two options above are the same thing ?
I found that, but if i didn't understand your problem don't mind.

  • I cannot get a sound to play on arrival of new mail, default or custom.

I am running on a Linux box under CentOS 5.10. If I select a .wav file in a file browser screen it plays just fine. The same file is silent when used as a custom mail arrival sound. The default sound also does not play. As far as I know I have set up the sound selection in the General tab correctly. In an earlier version of Thunderbird the sound worked fine. My current version of T'bird is 24.7.0. How do I fix this problem?

"was it the same sound file...."
No. I picked another .wav file that sounds like the horn used for horse races.
"Thunderbird has a limit on the sample rate. is 16khz"
I have no idea how to determine this for the .wav file I selected. I know that the file plays when I select the file in the file manager screen, so I know that the default audio player handles it; similarly, if I open noatun and specify that .wav file to be played, it plays fine.
"Using KDE? Is the file the KDE default mail sound?"
No. I am running gnome, I believe, though the KDE programs that I invoke (such as games) run well also. I really do not know what the default mail sound is, as it has never played on this computer despite my efforts to get SOME kind of audible indication that email has arrived. On an older machine with an older kernel and an older Thunderbird I was able to get the default sound and substitute one I liked better.

  • [solved] KDE 4.4: Wallpapers not working.

I just updated testing and it installed KDE 4.3.98, however now I cannot use wallpapers on my desktop, if I choose wallpaper in the desktop appearance window, there's no options to pick what image to display or anything, just the drop down telling the type of background.
The same is also the case for the slideshow and weather backgrounds. I've got 'kdeplasma-addons-wallpapers-weather' installed, but could not find any package relating to wallpaper or slideshow.
I did update Qt and phonon correctly before the upgrade, but for some reason I had to manually update "kdepim-akonadiconsole" due to dependency-issues, but I doubt it's related.
I tried to look in .xsession-errors when using the desktop activity settings window, but I couldn't see any errors appear and if I click apply in the dialog, the background just goes white, no errors or anything.

Iirc, arch tries to use vanilla (default) settings, and only patches stuff if it would cause major problems not to.
wrc1944 wrote:I knew there was a warning about using the testing repo, but I've experienced no problems.  Is that warning no longer in effect?
Ha! I too have experienced no (major) problems, but I still read arch-dev-public and watch out for any messages on updates

  • Application associations

I am a GNOME user, however I do admit to loading up XFCE and KDE sometimes, to see if the grass is greener on the other side. Usually, I could do this without anything changing on the GNOME side, but nowadays I'm finding that when I installed KDE, some of my file associations went to the KDE defaults - folders started opening in Dolphin when selected from the Places menu. I tried a few fixes suggested here, but the problem came back.
So I removed KDE, now I just installed XFCE. Immediately after installation I tried opening a folder from the Places menu - it opened in Thunar. I got Nautilus from the terminal and inspected some other files - they also had their associative application changed (.tar applications were set to file-roller, got changed to Squeeze).
Why is this happening? Ideally, file associations should be associated with the DE being used at the moment, not global for every DE.

On Arch (though perhaps not for all distributions), these defaults are (at least sometimes) taken from /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache. (See this post for more details.)
As you have witnessed, certain applications seem to "take over" the defaults when they are installed. (For me, the GIMP always replaces Eye of GNOME as the default image "handler.") I'm not certain what determines which program takes precedence....

  • How to get Konqueror to display _all_ characters?

    Good night,
I repeatedly encounter the problem that Konqueror is not able to display all the characters, which are used throughout the world wide web. Especially the Asian characters turn out to be non-displayable but on some pages, even umlauts are not working. Konqueror seems to be a bit weak, when it comes to special characters, I assume.
Is there any known fix for this problem, which keeps annoying me?
    Thanks in advance
    cg

If the page doesn't show the characters properly it is not browser's fault. It is the developers fault:
    header information:
    Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1
    Etag: W/"1579-1172081082000"
    Last-Modified: Wed, 21 Feb 2007 18:04:42 GMT
    Content-Type: text/html
    Content-Length: 1579
    Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2007 12:15:25 GMT
    200 OK
    head information:
    <head>
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="redes1.css"/>
    <title> Redes 1 </title>
    </head>
As you see, there no place where it says ISO-8859-1 or ISO-8859-15.
It is a misconfiguration of the developer. Set your KDE default encoding to ISO-9959-15 and the page http://javax.mty.itesm.mx/redes1/ will probably work well, because then konqueror will asume ISO-8859-15 as default.
What i do in this cases is contact the developers and tell them that they have to setup the encoding.
Tell them that setting the charset information in the html head works for firefox, internet explorer and opera, but that safari and konqueror need the charset information in the HTTP response header.
I would also recommend them to use unicode, since this way the page works internationally.

  • (SOLVED) Double-click in k3b using gnome as DE

    Hello!
Ive been running Gnome as DE for a few months after years using KDE. All fine. As usual, i've tried not mixing qt-gtk apps. As now i'm with gnome, no kdelibs :-) but, with brasero i can't. I like it, but i can't burn at 2x, only at 1x. I've tried with the 2 differents backends, but nothing. So, i tried k3b. Perfect, it burns at 2x. So, i'll keept it. The "problem" is that k3b works with a single click (KDE default), instead the double-click i like.
And i don't know how to change that behaviour.
I've tried executing some /opt/kde/bin apps, but they don't start.
So, how can i change it without instaling kdebase or similar? anything in .kderc?
    Thanks!!
Last edited by dienadel (2009-03-06 16:02:39)

The problem is that as k3b is still kde3 dependant, it only installs kdelibs v3, and there is no systemsetting executable in /opt/kde/bin. kdebase3 doesn't exists anymore, so, how can be this changed?

  • High cpu usage when moving application windows

    Hello all,
I have two machines with arch installed:
    - an eeepc 701 surf/intel gpu(xorg driver) with xfce
    - an amd 3800+ X2/nvidia 8860 gt(proprietary driver) with kdemod3(also checked with xfce4)/arch amd64 installed.
I noticed that when i move a window of an application(for example konsole, etc..) too fast i get high cpu usage(30-40 %), when checking with htop.
Is it normal that the X server uses the cpu so much when moving a window??
EDIT: up to now i tested it in a friends windows machine, and it happens exactly the same, so i guess is normal. It seems i need to be informed better about how X works :-)

today i switced back my desktop system to debian unstable and tried to see what the difference is concerning this problem.
I found out that in kde3 the solution to the "problem" is debians kde default configuration about window behaviour.
Especially the one mentioned below :
In debian this is not ticked and this has as a result zero cpu usage when windows are moved.

  • Dual Screen and VLC

I use the HDMI out to contect my Mac Mini to my HDTv, since the Mavericks update I now get a grey bar at the top of the screen (where the menu bar is) durin full screen playback. Is there a way to get rid of this?
Also why does the screen switch everytime you exit full screen in VLC or close VLC? Is it something to do with the app opening in a seperate space? What's the point of this and how do I stop it from happening? The other day VLC crashed and I had to force quit, which left me stuck in the grey inbetween screen with no menu bar or dock.

    I found what's wrong.
    In KDE window settings:
Right click at window bar -> "More actions" ->  "Windows Manage Settings" -> left side "KWin Scripts" -> right side "Video Wall"
KDE default has activated Video Wall Script (Spans fullscreen video player over all attached screens to create a Video Wall), I didn't notice it.

KHTML doesn't work, but I also have WebKit KPart for Konqueror which does display the page correctly.
I do have rekonq installed, but I prefer Konqueror over it. Yes I prefer Konqueror, even though rekonq is fine it's just doesn't feel right.
I hope that it either becomes more Konqueror like before becoming a KDE default browser or they just rebuild Konqueror to use WebKit.

    Hi.
I woud like to ask for help. I've been struggling with some "bug" that i came with Arch and usb devices (disks, pendrives). I can't mount it as a normal user using KDE default mounting software (Dolphin, for an exmample). I can mount it only in therminal by using sudo privileages. Is there a way to fix it? I read it, the same problem:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=180025
I tried to check everything according this topic, also with udisk2 archwiki thread but on my desktop machine i just can't mount usb devices without root password. This is how the error looks like for a Dolphin:

Could somebody help me? I even installed udisk mounting tool to mont without root password, added 50-udisks.policy and it just does not work.
    Help.
I can mount it wit terminal by typing
    sudo mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/usb
than i'm asked for password and it is mounted. Don't know why i can't mount it without password when connecting usb devices to usb port.

Could somebody help me? I even checked all rules in /etc/polkit-1/rules.d and /usr/share/polkit-1/actions on my notebook, and all files are the same with the same user permission but on notebook i can mount usb without problem, but on my desktop can't at all.

  • How do you set the default file manager in kde?

I'd like to set dolphin as the default file manager in KDE, how would I go about doing that?  I have an installed working copy of dolphin on my comp right now.

associate dolphin as default for directories in control center.
kde components -> file associations -> inode -> directory
Thanks, but for some reason when I go in there and change it as a user, it doesn't save the setting, and it doesn't work.  However, when I do the same thing as root it works, but of course, it only works for root then.

    and dolphin is nice
actually i think konqueror is more powerfull in kde3. However, the dolphin version in kde4 trunk is shaping up nice and looks promising.
Dolphin is a little bit less cluttered, and seems to be faster too.  Most of the features in konquerer I never use.
