KDE packages should be split

I am a Gentoo user. In portage kde packages are splited out. For example:
I can install "ksnapshot" or "kpdf" without pulling whole kdegraphics package with a lot of other tools for graphics. In Arch Linux i have to install whole kdegraphics package to get for example kpdf. It also will install kooka, kuickshow, kolourpaint and lots of other programs that I don't need. So it would be nice if I could install separate KDE programs without complete sets.

Thought I'd look into helping out, some day soon, by splitting out KDE packages -- or at least look into what amount of work it might be (before jumping in, blind).  My first step was to write to Dan Armak, former Gentoo KDE maintanier.  Since he sent such an informative reply, I wanted to post it here as a way to 1) preserve it (or back it up); and 2) to share.
Here's my inquiry:
Dan,
Am interested in splitting the current "monolithic" packages for the
distro Arch Linux.  I saw your e-mail address on the Gentoo wiki and
wanted to ask: Do you have any, say, shell scripts that help you do
this for Gentoo?  If so, would you be willing to share them?  Could
you share any other tips on how to do this task?
Thanks,
Here's Dan's informative reply:
Hello,
First off, I quit Gentoo development a few months ago. danarmak@OBSCURED1
will stop receiving mail sometime soon, so please mail me at
danarmak@OBSCURED2 and fix the link in that wiki if you can.
About splitting packages: I don't have any scripts that'd help you (what we
have is ebuild-specific), but the info we've gathered while creating the
split KDE ebuilds will probably be useful.
When splitting the ebuilds, we first had to list the split packages mapped to
each monolithic package. Some of the toplevel dirs in the monolithic tarball
are upstream-deprecated, some split packages include more than one top-level
dir, etc.
Then we had to map out the inter-dependencies between split packages. This
include many build-time deps that are not actually runtime deps, because
upstream apparently isn't used to the idea of selectively compiling only one
app; distros which aren't source-based like Gentoo compile everything and
then just package in pieces.
And finally we had to check which of the deps (and reverse deps) the
monolithic kdepim package had belonged to which derived split ebuild.
I've never used Arch Linux; will you need to take per-split-package compile
time deps into account? If you do, this will probably be the most tricky
part. Some apps rely on libraries being built in-tree, and not just present
in $DESTDIR. So to build e.g. kmail, you need to take some 9 libraries from
kdepim, which are installed by other packages, and copy or symlink the
installed .so and .la files back into you build tree. Similar things happen
with other buildtime-generated stuff.
Luckily you can gather all this info from the Gentoo ebuilds (viewcvs:
http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/).
eclass/kde-functions.eclass defines the KDE_DERIVATION_MAP variable. This maps
split packages to monolithic ones, so you can see what all there is. Then you
can look at the ebuilds for each split package.
The global variables starting with KM (for kde-meta-) in each ebuild are
instructions to the split ebuild build system. There's a brief explanation of
what they do in eclass/kde-meta.eclass (comment block starting with "Set the
following variables"). So looking at e.g. the kmail ebuild
(kde-base/kmail/kmail-3.5.4.ebuild) you'll see:
DEPEND=, RDEPEND=: normal build- and run-time dependencies.
KMCOPYLIB: as described above, these libs are copied from the live system to
the build tree.
KMEXTRACTONLY: these extra dirs are extracted (from the kdepim tarball) but
are not compiled. The kmail compilation accesses non-installed headers there
or whatever.
KMCOMPILEONLY: this dir is extracted and compiled, but not installed. Probably
builds e.g. a static library included by kmail.
KMEXTRA: stuff that's built and installed - basically pieces of kmail outside
the main kdepim/kmail directory.
HTH. Feel free to ask for more info. You can also ask the remaining Gentoo KDE
packagers at kde@OBSCURED3.

Also want to add: No, I don't have a clue what I'm getting myself into.  Never stopped me before. 8)

Is X-windows and GUI desktops supported on the ODA "engineered system" running a RAC database?  If it is, what is the yum command needed to install the X-windows, Gnome, and KDE package groups?

While I agree with the direction of the suggestions with installing packages for X-windows, we do not have a blanket 'apply any package' recommendation.
In particular we do not support altering the kernel (although we do have exceptions which we review on a case by case basis).
Basically, if the you want to alter functionality that would not impact core functionality you are usually fine.
A good guideling is : The more dependencies that there are between the package / rpm you are considering using the higher the potential impact on functionality - meaning higher chance for problems
Note: We do use VNC including Real and Tiger regularly , but we have no hard recommendation on how you may want to use X-windows. I have never seen a limitation other than comments on bugs
or incompatibility within the X-window product itself with certain kernel levels.
Patching may overwrite some packages that you may install, however,  _depending on packages/rpms added_ there is also the possibility that you will break existing functionality to the point
that patching itself will fail ( we have already seen a few cases of this in which case the proper mitigation is to remove / roll-back any alterations to the ODA before patching, and then adding the packages/rpms
back after the patching is completed.
From what you are discussing the impact should be low without conflicts, but please consider the above, and if you have specific packages which you consider potential problems
please create an SR so that we can review packages / rpms on an individual basis.
Once again: the main criteria for not supporting rpms is regarding the kernel itself

  • How do I migrate from KDEMOD back to Arch's KDE package?

I've been a fan of KDEMOD for a long time, now that they are phasing it out, I'm kinda stuck in the limbo and would like to move to Arch's KDE package, is there a seamless way that you guys can recommend while keeping my KDE configurations?
    Thanks!

I would back up your ~/.kde4
    cp -vR ~/.kde4 ~./kde4bak
In theory you should be able to comment out the kdemod repos in pacman.conf and then run
    pacman -Syyuu
to refresh the databases and downgrade from kdemod.
You should then be able to install KDE from [extra] or [kde-unstable] if the latter is enabled
You might also want to get a list of installed KDEmod packages to know what KDE packages to get

  • Broken dependencie for the kde packages

    Hello World !
First sorry for my poor english and probably because i'm not posting in the right section.
On a fresh installed Archlinux system, i decided to install kde desktop with this : pacman -S kde but a the end of the loading, kde didn't start and the loading screen stayed forever.
The problem was fixed by installing ttf-dejavu package so i wanted to say to the Archlinux kde package maintener that he should add this package as a kde dependencie.

    Hello.
    Nothing is broken:
    ArchWiki reads:
Note: You need to install a ttf-* package. phonon-vlc already requires ttf-freefont, but when using phonon-gstreamer you should add ttf-dejavu or another too. For more information see FS#26012.

  • Arch KDE packages not compiled using -fpic ?

this week-end i gave prelink a shot. then i realized that actually most (if not all) kde apps could not be prelinked.
it looks like they're not compiled with -fpic option, and prelink cannot "link against non-pic libraries".
it's not that i absolutely want to prelink my whole system, it's just that i thought this -fpic option was a good thing so i'm surprised it's not used in arch kde packages.
any plans to enable -fpic for kde in the near future ?

brazzmonkey wrote:a few months ago, i had a gentoo box compiled with USE="pic" and didn't encounter any problems. but this use flag is not used by every ebuild.
i didn't know -fpic could slow things... and never noticed it.
I don't notice the slowdown on my Athlon64, but on my old (socket A) Sempron 2500+ and my even older (socket A) Duron 1.2GHz, you can really feel it.  Probably because the Athlon64 has enough grunt to cover the slowdown though

Seems like a pretty easy fix. You can use '--force' to install this package too.
It's important to understand what pacman does and how, so e.g.

    is not the right attitude.
The question is, why suddenly some people have such issues.

  • Completely Remove Remaining KDE Packages

    Hi
    I have uninstalled kde by issuing command;
    pacman -Rc kde
How can I make sure that all the kde packages are removed and if any left then how can I remove them also?
    Regards

The best way would have been to use `pacman -Rns` or `pacman -Rcns`.
You *could* reinstall kde then use one of those, or just check for 'orphan' packages with `pacman -Qdt` and remove any that you don't need.

  • KDE packages

Ok so there is a thread right under this by myself to so I appologize to admins for making so many threads .. but  ... this thread is a little different ..
I have install KDE 3.4.2 and it runs .. but -- there arnt ANY packages installed for it -- and Im not sure how to get them ( I know its through pacman but not sure what the name of the package group is ) .. I dont even have shell or konqueror so its useless right now... can anyone help out ?

sysboy, .kderc should be created for you the first time you log into kde (like it did with the .kde dir).   .kderc just has some font and background colour info in it.
The menus will come back, we just have to figure out what the problem is.  It is something like a stray dir or config setting that is screwing it all up.  Maybe some permissions problem.
I know kde tries to grab directories from other apps too (like gnome).
If I were you, I would create a temp dir and move a bunch of config stuff into it and see if your problem goes away.  If it does not, you have not needlessly killed the config settings.  For starters, I would move .local .config .kde .kderc .qt out of the way and then logout and login again.  You should get the kde settings wizard on login.  If you don't get that, then maybe there are deper troubles.
You could also log in as root and temporarily create a new user.  Then logout and log in as the new user, the menus should be there for that user for sure.  If not, then you know it is a problem in /opt/kde or /etc/ or somewhere, and not in you local user settings.
    Good luck.

  • HT3819 I am a teacher. I have an iPhone and iPad for personal use.  I also have an iPod and now an iPad for school use.  Would it be best for me to use home sharing on all 4 devices, or should I split my account and have separate accounts for home & schoo

My first i device was an iPod touch that I was given for use in my classroom.  Then I got an iPhone for personal use.  Both items are listed under the same username and account.  Since then I now have 2 iPads, one for home and one for work.  I have many apps that are only for work like Math Zombie and Science Facts, and many that are for personal use, like Facebook and YouVersion.  I know that I can synch each device and tell iTunes which apps go on which device.  However at home I use a Mac, and my school computer is a PC.  I am wondering if I should split my account and keep personal separate from work.  Then I can synch all school related devices on the PC and home devices on the Mac.  I realize that there maybe the rare occaision that I might want one app for both accounts.  That's the chance I take on splitting my account.  Are there ay benefits one way or the other?

Will you be the person paying for apps on both accounts?
Are you the only person that will use both of the iPads?
Is there a chance students will be using the work iPad and if so, do you want personal data stored on it?
If you're the only one using it I'd keep the same account just to have the flexibility of having access to everything on all devices. If your students will be using it or if the school is paying for the school apps I'd keep separate accounts. It all depends on how often you will use school apps from home, and home apps at school. Just some things to consider...

  • Should I split 1 large JAR into smaller JARs?

I'm not sure how to deploy my application. It's composed of about 50 classes and at the moment compiles into one big JAR. Is that how things are done? I was wondering if I should split the application into smaller JARs according to function, as if I have to make a fix to one part, I then just distribute that one smaller file. Is this something that takes a lot of work to modify the code to make it work, or do I just select the classes in Eclipse and create the JARs? Or should I just not bother, and send out one big JAR?
    Thanks

    Hi There,
First of all, I must tell you that making a 'jar' file an ddeploying that only to the AS will not do...... You gotta make an 'ear' or 'war' that will consist of the 'jar' files and give the 'jar' file in the Classpath....... If you use JNDI fo Database Connection, 'xml's must be written and configured correctly.....
Secondly, a 'jar' file might contain 10 to the power Infinity class files--so, that is not a problem...... make sure that only class files r put into and not anything else like the 'java' files that might make the 'jar' big.....
I think, I answered to your queries...............
Now, if you face problems again, please be more specific in what you want in the forum.........
    OK Buddy, Cheers !

  • Amount should be split in to different accounts

Our client is selling Computers and it is accessories.
I have material with one valuation class ,  for this material there are three warranties.
    1. Base Warranty
    2. Extended warranty
    3. Base & Extended warranty.
Case 1: if the material falls under "Base warranty" then it has to post in one GL account.(After making GR)
Case2: If the material falls under extended warranty , then it has to post another GL account..(After making GR)
Case3: If the material falls under both Base & Extended warranty , then the amount should  split in to both accounts , based on Percentage. .(After making GR)
    How can it be possible?
If any one know the solution, please inform me.
I request you , to forward , if you have any solutions for the above scenario.
    Thanks in advance .
    Kind Regards,
    N.Chandrasekhar.

    Chandrasekhar,
How do you identify the different types of warranties for the material in SAP?
You can definitely use the split valuation functionality where in you could create 3 different valuation types to represent your 3 types of warranty and then use 3 different valuation classes to link the same material to 3 different G/L accounts. For case 3, you will have to use a BADI or user exit during GR to split the amount based on your criteria.
If you are not aware of the split valuation functionality, you may wish to go through this nice explanation below.

    Hope this helps.

  • Huge Number of Deps when Upgrading KDE packages from 4.14 to 14.12

    Hi,
I know the KDE upgrade issue is "flavor of the day" at the moment and I have read other threads on it; but so far have not found info which applies to my situation.
Note: I only use a FEW KDE apps like Krusader, Yakuake, Konsole, Kcalc and do NOT use KDE the Desktop Environment (and have no desire to do so.)  In fact, I do not use any DE's, only Openbox and i3WM as Window Managers, preferring a minimalistic approach, IOW, "less is more".
Since a day or two (since the KDE 4.14 to 14.12 came out), I am facing the following when trying to do a full system upgrade:

I have looked at almost all of the packages listed above and I currently only have a few of those installed. I can recognize the obvious ones I use (Krusader, Konsole, Gwenview and a few others) and their current deps.  When I do a pacman -Qs on each of the above packages/deps, most of them are NOT currently installed.
Trying to keep my system light, with no unnecessary packages, I fail to see why I would need packages such as kcrash, kbookmarks, kconfigwidgets, kemoticons, knotifications, kwallet (I definitely do NOT use kwallet).
When I look at the Net Upgrade Size of +172.52 MiB, again, I fail to see WHY I would need to load my system up with all of these packages--unless absolutely necessary.  But why would running the SAME apps as before, just upgrading them, require an extra 172+ MiB?  That does NOT seem right at all.  Granted, some of these MiB's are allocated to the other packages at end of list such as mesa, etc.; but most of the 172+ MiB's are most likely allocated to the KDE-related packages.
    1) Short-term
I have tried to Ignore the packages in pacman.conf by adding "kde kdegraphics kdebase kdenetwork kf5 plasma-next" to the IgnoreGroup and "yakuake oxygen-icons kdebase-lib kdebase-runtime" to the IgnorePkg but that is not enough since there are some packages which do not belong to any group so I would need to hunt them down one by one, etc.  And this does not seem to be the right approach, in any event.
    2) Long-term
I do want to upgrade the applications which I DO use, such as Krusader, Konsole, etc.; so it would seem I need to resolve this issue.
For further info, if I change the replies on the choices pacman offers on upgrading, this is what I get (which is probably normal):
    % pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...

    :: konsolepart4 and kdebase-konsole are in conflict (kdebase-konsole<4.14.3-4)
So, what am I missing?  Just a few brain cells, i.e. the apps I have (in their updated versions) actually DO need all of the deps listed?  (This really makes no sense to me.)
Or is there a problem with the required dependencies?
    Thanks for any helpful feedback.

Well, If you are correct (and you probably are), with all due respect to KDE users/developers, IMHO this just confirms the trend towards "bloat".....
Again, I see no reason whatsoever to have to install kwallet (for example) when I'm just not using it, etc.
This just makes me want to uninstall those apps altogether or, probably better, just stop at the versions I currently have and prevent them from upgrading, as a temporary solution.
I might be able to switch to other smaller/lighter apps, over time--which will probably have less features, though, but can't always have your cake and eat it too, I suppose.
What is the best way for me to prevent this upgrade of all kde-related apps from 4.14 to higher versions?
I mentioned in my original post which groups and packages I tried adding to pacman.conf IgnoreGroup and IgnorePkg but I am obviously missing something.
Any suggestions as to how to properly stop from upgrading?
This is where I am right now, for pacman.conf
    IgnorePkg = netcfg cups libcups compton-conf-git caps opera yakuake oxygen-icons kdebase-lib kdebase-runtime kdebase-konsole kdegraphics-gwenview kdebase-katepart kdelibs kdepimlibs libkdcraw libkipi libkomparediff2

  • Leopard won't work for me: what Tiger package should I buy?

I was holding out for a Leopard upgrade but my imac g-4 is too old to run with the new cat. Now I see that Apple is withdrawing Tiger and I'm going to have to buy the software elsewhere. Can you please advise me on which package to buy? All pages with Tiger system requirements now link to Leopard pre-sale pages.
My imac is running on 10.2.8 and has 256 MB of memory.
I have a non-Mac memory card that I can install but also need to know if this is advisable.
Thanks in advance for your guidance.

You need to buy a retail Tiger package. The install DVD will be black coloured with a big X on it. Don't buy any grey coloured Tiger install discs. These would have shipped with a new Mac and would likely not work on your Mac. Also don't buy any black Tiger DVD that says "Upgrade" on it. These discs require that you have OS X 10.3 installed on your Mac to work.
If your iMac does not have a DVD drive, you will either need to get an external FireWire DVD drive (not USB) to install it, or you will need to get the Tiger CD set. This used to be available at AppleRescue, which seems to have gone under now. Check eBay for it.
You should still be able to get Tiger at any computer retailer that sells Macs. If you wait until after October 26th you should be able to find Tiger for a substantial discount buy buying it second hand at places like eBay.

  • How to go about removing KDE packages in Gnome?

Somehow I seem to have ended up with a few KDE applications installed in my Gnome installation, and I'm not sure where they came from. I've tried removing them using pacman, but I can never find the correct application name. Is there a way to get rid of all things KDE related in one swoop?
    Thanks!

How did they end up beeing on your system? Did you install them manually?
So you have THAT many packages on your system that a manual search is too time comsuming?
You can do a lot of filtering with pacman -Q. If those packages were installed manually, you can filter out all manually installed packages. Then you might want to search the package infos for the string "KDE".
    -> man pacman
    -> man grep
I didn't install them manually, they were probably installed from careless pacman management on my part. There aren't that many actually, I just overlooked the -Q flag. Thanks for your help!
