KDE vs Gnome

Which one is better to use with Arch? I've always used Gnome but I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is on which one works best with Arch.

well,I am a Gnome user for years.but,in Archlinux, after hearing about kdemod,I installed kdemod and it is working perfectly.
although kde-3.5.9 is what is available(stable).
will have to wait for kde-4.2.x something to experience kde4
regarding Gnome in archlinux,I have to try that! still kdemod works perfectly!
also, anyways whatever Desktop Environment u install, even kde,u cannot dispense with gtk2+ libraries (I like kde for amaroK though, dont like the huge customization options and strict binding of kdelibs+qt apps only)

  • How to install KDE and Gnome

Normally I'm a big KDE user, but there are some things in GNOME I want to try out to see if I might make the switch. I already have KDE installed, if I wanted the option to run KDE or GNOME can I just 'sudo pacman -S gnome gnome-extras' and it'll show up in the session type for kdm?

i run gnome BUT like a bunch of kde programs
    so both are installed
kde dose have a tendency to reset the "open with" defaults
then there is an option in kdm to run gnome, kde, or other
so it is not a problem at all , you might need to re set the "open with" defaults but that is about it.

  • KDE (or GNOME?) non-latin chars input problem

After recent upgrade (pacman -Syu) can't anymore type non-latin characters in GNOME apps (like gEdit, Evolution, Thunderbird etc.) under KDE. Openoffice is still OK.
Keyboard layout switching works (can see the difference between US and GB layouts, but when switching to non-latin layouts getting latin chars instead of non-latin.
In KDE apps everything is fine.
Have current KDE and GNOME installed.
BTW, when trying to run Epiphany web browser (under KDE again) getting error message (not sure but maybe this is related to the first problem):
"Could not start GNOME Web Browser
Startup failed because of the following error:
Unable to determine the address of the message bus (try 'man
dbus-launch' and 'man dbus-daemon' for help)"
Have dbus in DAEMONS line in rc.conf.
    Any suggestions?

Fixed first problem... rollback of inputproto and libxi did the trick (not sure how safe it was).
scarecrow, thank you for your reply but it didn't help for the second problem. Changed DAEMONS to hal only, added dbus-python and even dbus-sharp (just in case, all other dbus related stuff was already there) but - no luck. Perhaps dbus-1.0 might be a solution who knows.
    Thanks anyway.

  • KDE and GNOME install no found smbclient from all mirrors?

I met this issue when try to install KDE and GNOME. It is not found even in Arch's ftp and many mirrors.
    Who can help me this?

do pacman -Sy before. smbclient was updated yesterday and maybe you forgot to sync the database.

  • Can't install KDE or GNOME from pacman

When I try to install KDE or GNOME from pacman, the system downloads most or all of the files, from what I can see, and then returns a bunch of errors of the form "gcc-libs: /usr/lib/libssp.so exists in filesystem". I'd post the entirety of the messages, but I can't figure out how to pipe output from pacman without making it impossible to enter "yes" at the install prompt. This problem occurs with both kde and gnome, and from what I can tell it looks like basically the same set of errors with either one.

What does "pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libssp.so" say?  It should say gcc-libs and not gcc.  I'm guessing you have just installed.  Have you done a "pacman -Syu"?  The gcc package was split into gcc and gcc-libs.
In fact it looks remarkably similar to this" http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=37690

  • Cant launch KDE or Gnome

    Hi,
As im using fluxbox, and i like it, i really didnt care much about those two, at least not about using them in this distro, but i have finally decided to give them a go, but i cant make them work and i dont know why.
I looked at my .xinitrc and it had the opcions (preseted and preceded with #) for other WM like enlightenment or windowmaker or blackbox.
but there was no one for kde or gnome, so i tryed startkde and gnomesession and several more, but i couldnt get it working...
How should i launch KDE or Gnome on Arch? i used all the commands i use in MDK and it didnt work.
    thanks in advance.

once you get in, you can add all the different wm's and de's to your login screen by editing your sessions tab in the control center in kde under system administration-login manager.
btw, if you have kde installed, try typing kdm, see if that brings up your login screen. if you don't have kdm, you can get it with pacman.

  • KDE or Gnome in Virtualbox = sporadic mouse activity

    Virtualbox 4.1.18
    Arch installed as Guest
Tried with both KDE and Gnome
Mouse is acting sporadic. In Gnome, just moving the mouse triggers the hot corner. In KDE, any click & drag activity leads to random results like window resizing or randomly moving the windows.
    Any thoughts?

    Welcome to Arch.

There's the problem. Use the wiki. As that guide notes, it is unlikely to be as current as Arch's documentation. Arch changes quickly - a lot happens in 6 months, or 11.

  • KDE and GNOME?

    Hi everyone
Because KDE can be quite moany, is there a way to install both KDE and GNOME, but keep them kinda isolated from each other?
If that makes no sense (doesn't to me), I mean, like install both, but keep each other's apps and applets out of the way (like, no gnome network applet in KDE, and AWN in gnome but not KDE)
    Thanks in advance

You could setup a dual-boot system, one Arch install with Gnome, and one with KDE.  That should keep them pretty well separated if they aren't allowed to share anything but SWAP and your GRUB configuration file.

  • Cannot Start KDE or Gnome

I just did a fresh intel install, installed the companion software, ran the installer to get KDE2 and Gnome on the dt login screen. When I try to open a KDE or Gnome session, It goes back to the login screen. Gives an error message reading the /usr/dt/bin/Xsession file.
    Any ideas here?

I had exactly the same issue using the gnome and kde software on the cd's. I recently did a fresh install, and unchecked these options from the installer. I then downloaded the new gnome 1.4 and it works great. I have not tried any kde installs though.

  • [SOLVED] Can't use themes after switching from KDE to Gnome

I've just switched my desktop environment from KDE to Gnome, and am unable to use GTK themes properly.
When I was using KDE, I had qtcurve-gtk2 with gtk-theme-switch2 installed, with QtCurve as the chosen GTK theme.  I have uninstalled both qtcurve-gtk2 and gtk-theme-switch2 when I made my switch to Gnome, but it seems my GTK themes are still controlled by the QtCurve engine, and I can't use GTK themes via Gnome's Appearance Preferences.
Last edited by samjh (2009-09-24 13:33:02)

Thanks for the reply, but it's not the answer.  Gtk-chtheme changes the GTK theme that QtCurve uses.  The problem I have is that although I've removed QtCurve from my system (including configuration files using pacman's -Rn option, and the configuration file in my /~ directory), my Gnome system is still using QtCurve for themes, blocking other theme engines from running.  So I'm really looking for a way to get back the ability to use proper GTK/Gnome themes, not QtCurve.
    To clarify again:
    1. I used to have a KDE installation.  I used qtcurve-gtk2 for to theme my GTK apps to conform with KDE look and feel, with gtk-theme-switch2 to set the style for QtCurve.
    2. I removed KDE from my system, and in the process, I also removed (manually and using pacman -Rcn) qtcurve-gtk2 and gtk-theme-switch2.
    3. I installed Gnome, along with gtk-engine-murrine, murrine-theme-collection and gtk-rezlooks-engine.
    4. When I access the Appearance Preferences dialog, all my themes are previewed using KDE's Oxygen-style buttons.  I am only able to use/activate GTK control themes (ie. I cannot use Murrine, Rezlooks, or other non-GTK2 theming engines, even though they are installed).  Even more strangely, if I switch to a GTK control theme to something other than Clearlooks, the buttons change to the appropriate theme, but the scroll bars are stuck on the Clearlooks look-and-feel.  Metacity theming is fine.
I have reinstalled and re-removed qtcurve-gtk2 and gtk-theme-switch2.  I have completely removed Qt from my system.  I have also searched (using the find command) for any files of qtcurve, and removed every trace of it.  But the old QtCurve configuration is still preventing non-GTK2 themes from running, and causing rendering flaws for scrollbar controls.

  • KDE and Gnome Integration (It only took a decade)

I'm sure that of all you know about Gtk-Qt, which will soon have a Qt4 stable version. But, some of us, including me, has been hopping for a Qt-Gtk for a while, which will make KDE applications blend into the Gnome desktop. Many of us use Amarok. It's not called Gtk-Qt, but it's coming. It's called QGtkStyle, made by Trolltech, and it is available as a Qt 4.4 plugin. KDE 4.1 is based on Qt 4.4. Qt 4.4 is not only proving cross-platform, but also cross-desktop.

  • KDE vs Gnome vs XFCE (amount of ram used.)

    I run the command:
    coda ~ $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 2010 1341 669 0 78 890
    -/+ buffers/cache: 373 1637
    Swap: 1474 0 1474
So I'm using a total of 373 megs of ram on KDE.
I have an old laptop, and I want to know if I have enough ram to run gnome without excessively using swap.
And if not, I'll just use XFCE.
How much RAM (on average) does Gnome and XFCE use?

lucke wrote:Does anyone perhaps have any meaningful and comparable figures for XP/Vista, running basic desktop apps?
I don't think you'll find any with meaningful figures, and the figures here aren't all that useful either. I mean, even comparing memory usage between two different users with the exact same programs running and the very same hardware will give you very different results unless it's measured directly after a cold boot (and the numbers you'll get then is meaningless anyway), seeing as usage patterns will have a major effect on how much memory any application will use.
    Agreed.
What is also not being taken into account here is kernel modules loaded.
Unloading unused modules may reduce significantly, the amount of used memory (i.e. free up memory)
Note the +/-buffers line presents the (used and) free mem available to applications.

  • Can I make KDE or Gnome look like Windows 7

The reason I want to do this is for my wife who for the most part has used Windows. I did a trial run with Kubuntu for about a month but it was a no go. She could not get used to it. Also if I recommend a Linux distribution to friends and family this will make it a easier transition for them.
I did a Google search and found a transition package for both Gnome and KDE but sadly it was for Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I was just wondering if this will work with Arch Linux with some substitutes of course. Thank you.

panuh wrote:What does the transition package do? Is it just about looks or are there any major similarities to Win-Layout?
    Here is the Gnome link:
    http://aminesoft.wordpress.com/2009/03/ … windows-7/
    Here is the KDE link:
    http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.ph … ent=104232
The XP to Vista wasn't as a big jump for her and other people I know. They just had to be shown some changes in the next 10 minutes or so.
She does like the Taskbar in Windows, the Start menu, the easy to spot red X to close the program and the Explorer layout.
If I customize the look in Arch Linux as I can with Ubuntu it will be an end to dual booting Windows. Also sometimes my wife takes the laptop to other family members house because she needs to get caught in school. She goes to a online university. Sometimes other family members want to use the laptop to check email and other things. Installing a Windows 7 transformation package will be easier for them too. I hope someone can help out.

  • Networkmanager applet without KDE or Gnome

I'm looking for a NetworkManager applet that will not depend on Gnome or KDE (GTK or Qt only is ok) to use for my awesome desktop.
    Supporting NM 0.7 if possible.

Well, wicd might be an alternative... I wished it would support PPP, VPNs etc. like the NM 0.7 does now.
I'm using Knetworkmanager now, the KDE3 version (it was removed from Arch but I had it installed before that), but I'd like to get rid of KDE3 apps.
Gnome-network-manager OTOH has Gnome dependencies I'd like to get rid-of too (Gconf, Orbit2).
