Kde with compiz, but no shadows

Hey together!
Does anyone know how to get shadows with compiz on kde? I use compiz instead of kwin, because its faster for me, but my kde windows have no shadows. Chromium has them, but not my kde windows. I activated the decoration plugin with shadows, but there are no shadows. Any tipps? I use KDE 4.7 with compiz 0.8.8.
Best regards!

A couple of questions...
How are you starting Compiz? Or rather, what's the output of
ps axuw | grep compiz
when Compiz is running? If you are starting Compiz with the ccp plugin, then all configuration happens via ccsm and you can ignore the bits about GConf.
Which window decorator are you using? Is it Emerald, kde4-window-decorator, or something else?
If you use Emerald (from pacman: emerald), then drop shadows are the responsibility of the Emerald theme, which can be edited with emerald-theme-manager.
If you use kde4-window-decorator (from pacman: compiz-decorator-kde), then drop shadows are drawn by the KWin theme you've selected from systemsettings->Workspace Appearance->Window Decorations. The only default KWin theme that draws drop shadows is Oxygen, so if you're using a different theme, that may be the reason you have no shadows. As far as I can tell, the shadow-related settings from Compiz's Window Decoration plugin have no effect on kde4-window-decorator.
It is also possible that you have no window decorator running at all (i.e. your windows have no borders), in which case Chrome would be the only window with a drop shadow because it draws its own window border.
Finally, everything I've written above presumes that you are using Compiz 0.8.8, so if you are using a different version, please let me know.

  • KDE with compiz or beryl ? Compiz still needs many gnome dependencies?

    Hi
I'm going to install new x86_64 arch on my laptop and wondering about installing compiz - I'm using KDE and I have question - does compiz still need so many gnome deps or it's better with this now ? For now on my x86 desktop I use beryl 0.2.1 and no problem here but in the future I'll have to change beryl to compiz so I need to know this gnome-deps thing... anyone uses KDE with compiz ?
    Thanks in advance

Just install compiz-core and the kde decorator. It only requires gconf/gtk2.
FYI: KDE4 is introducing its own composting effects in KWin, so you won't be needing compiz/beryl if you use KDE in a few months

  • Assuming video is not compatible with compiz-fusion...?

I'm installing ArchLinux on a extra computer at work... works great... but for the fun of it I tried running compiz fusion on it. I get this:

I'm just using an xorg.conf that was generated with #X -configure, and have also tried one generated with hwd -x.  Both detect  "sis" as the video driver.  Listing below...
Am I right to assume that this means that the video in not compatible with compiz? Or could it be some settings that need to be tweaked.
    Thanks for any advice.

Are you 100% sure? I just run glxinfo and it says:
    direct rendering: Yes
And I'm confused. Are there any chances of getting compositing to work on SiS card in this case?
I'm not the expert here, but compiz can work with indirect rendering, so I don't think that's the qualifier for if it works for your system.

  • Problems with compiz

I'm a kde user but I installed gnome today alongside it to try out xgl.
    I have two problems.
    1. I use default init 5 so I tried to get gdm to work with xgl but each time gdm starts, I get an error that display 1 is used, I press ok, it tries to use display2 then says display2 is in use.
I changed default init to init 3 and I can startxgl
    2. When I right click on desktop within gnome/compiz, it zooms in. I don't want it to zoom in as I need the right click menu.
    So, my questions are:
    1. How do I get xgl to work under gdm?
    2. How do I make right click on desktop not zoom in but show the 'right click conext menu instead?

    1.http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xgl#Method_1_-_GDM_uses_XGL ( use first method!! )
    2.Dunno..
I use gnome and it doest zoom in.. to zoom in.. I press superkey + scrollwheel.. so check your keybindings..
PS: I use display :0 instead of the :1 which the guide and people tell me to.. cause i couldnt get it working on :1 for some reason

  • KDE with qt and opengl

    Hey!
I'm interested, if someone of you already tried to launch kde with qt set to use the opengl backend? At the moment I use the raster backend but I started dolphin with --graphicssystem opengl and it seems to work fine for me (Nvidia 435m with closed driver). So did some of you use opengl and what are your experiences?
    Best regards!

Ok, this is interesting... On my laptop, all aplications seems to work fine. The only problem is plasma. The transparent areas (like the panel and the other widgets) get black shadows and looks a little bit weird. But the rest seems to work fine and is performant. So I hope they fix this problem and maybe in a year we can use the opengl backend... Would be great!

  • Window moving with compiz lags with geforce 9500gt

    hi,
i bought my new computer: amd athlon II x2 250 3ghz, 2gb ram and club 3d geforce 9500 gt 1gb. its working really well and fast, but i have a problem in compiz when i try to move window i see that movement kinda lags. in kde with kwin effects window movement is totally smooth. anyone know what might be the problem? im using up to date system with nvidia proprietary driver.
    thanks.

    Hi
Enable loose binding by either right-click on the fusion-icon > compiz options > check loose binding or
    compiz --replace --loose-binding
Next open ccsm, general options > display settings, disable detect refresh rate and manually set it to twice the amount of your screens refresh rate (that also helps with tearing), enable sync to vblank in compiz only but not in nvidia-settings.
Now go to utility and enable workarounds, make sure that force synchronization between x and glx is enabled as well.

I have upgraded Apple Aperture from version 2 to version 3 and I'm having a problem with the "Highlights and Shadows" adjustment. According to the user's manual, I should have access to an advanced disclosure triangle which would allow me to adjust mid contrast, colour, radius, high tonal width and low tonal width.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to access this advanced section, I'd be most grateful.

    Hi David-
The advanced adjustments in the Highlights & Shadows tool were combined into the "Mid Contrast" slider in Aperture 3.3 and later. If you have any images in your library that were processed in a version of Aperture before 3.3, there will be an Upgrade button in the Highlights & Shadows tool in the upper right, and the controls you asked about under the Advanced section. Clicking the Upgrade button will re-render the photo using the new version of Highlights & Shadows, and the Advanced section will be replaced with the new Mid Contrast slider. With the new version from 3.3 you probably don't need the Advanced slider, but if you want to use the older version you can download it from this page:

  • Can't run KDE with OpenGL using radeon driver

    Hi,
I'm running KDE on a ThinkPad T400 with an ATI Radeon HD3470 card using the radeon driver. I've got the desktop running with desktop effects using XRender, but when I try switching to OpenGL I get a pop-up saying...
"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options."
I've tried tweaking the OpenGL options in KDE and various driver options in xorg.conf but it fails every time. glxinfo reports that direct rendering is working and glxgears runs at around 200fps.

The desktop looks great but I'd love to get it working with OpenGL. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Unfortunatelly, this driver doesn't support opengl with your card. Radeonhd driver doesn't support either. You can only use desktop effects with XRender, but not all and some of them might be choppy.
The only solution for you is installing catalyst drivers (not recommended, hanged my system several times per day) or turning off desktop effects (recommended). In 2 months 2.6.30 kernel should be out with extra features and tweaks, allowing to use EXA with radeon drivers, so XRender performance should fly. Unfortunatelly I don't have any information about OpenGL support with open source radeon drivers.
I moved from nvidia to ati, after nvidia's problem with kde performance, but ati is not better.

  • [SOLVED] Can not shutdown/restart from KDE with systemd

    Hello,
Recently, following I switched to a pure systemd setup.  The process was simple and most things worked "right out of the bpx".  However, I can not shutdown or restart from KDE!
Let's say that I do the 3 finger salute (ALT-CTRL-DEL) and select "Turn off computer" what I get is KDE shutting down, but then I will only get a console (TTY) login prompt.  Pressing ALT-CTRL-DEL then will trigger a reboot.  I can also login and use "systemctl poweroff".  However, I don't understand why it doesn't work straight from KDE.
Are there some packages I must install?  Are there some systemd services that I must enable?  What other relevant info should I include in this post?

As bgc1954 said, there is also a symlink "/sbin/poweroff". Just edit the file "/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc", go to [shutdown] an replace the line "HaltCmd=/sbin/halt" with "HaltCmd=/sbin/poweroff".

  • Really interesting bug with Compiz, not sure how to label it

Hi forums, I really promise I searched around for this, so if this is a super common bug, I apologize in advance (I really wasn't sure how to even label what was happening). All I know is that when compiz is enabled, I'm getting super weird behavior in programs, mostly with terminal and system menus. The only way I know to show this is by a screenshot:
    http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h248/ … 0c7d62.png
As you can see from the pic, there are multiple menu objects highlighted (I promise I don't have 3 mouse pointers!). I couldn't capture this via screenshot, but the highlighted elements are actually alternating between this set and another. I could show more instances of this, but I think it would just be redundant. Another (possibly related) issue is the odd behavior in terminal. When I am using terminal to do something, be it accessing the AUR repository or editing a file somewhere, or anything really, the terminal scrolls up and down exactly 1 line, repeatedly (very fast). The only other place I experience significant issues is with compizconfig settings manager (ccsm). When trying to access a different menu, the ccsm window flashes very quickly back and forth to the previous menu screen. All of these things make it incredibly difficult to make selections. My browser (chrome) is fortunately exempt from this dilemma.
The only thing I know for sure is that this is caused by compiz. Disabling compiz (going back to xfwm or using another window manager) eliminates the issue. I hadn't had this issue until yesterday, but I really hadn't changed anything.
    Things I've tried:
    - Reinstalling compiz
    - Enabling/Disabling Emerald
    - Installing compiz-bzr
    - Fooling with metacity
    - Restarting
Any advice or words of wisdom on this would be very appreciated

Thanks for the reply. I'm actually using a slightly older nvidia gpu (480 GTX) with nvida-340xx, which is what nvidia recommends. I've worked with changing video driver parameters, and nothing there has seemed to change this much. I was afraid this was being caused by a mistake of mine, but it seems more and more likely that this is a problem with compiz: to test, I made a virtual machine and installed arch there (same setup as mine, only completely fresh) and I'm having the same issues. I like compiz because of the amazing ability to theme and control the general appearance of my gui. Is there a good alternative that one of you all could recommend?

  • [Solved] Multiple wallpapers on MATE with Compiz

    Hi.
I wanted to make MATE work with Compiz so it would let me have multiple wallpapers with the Wallpapers feature in ccsm. When I set the settings in ccdm, it doesn't work.
I googled it, and although it showed me a few settings I should change in the configuration editor, it did nothing.
What should I do so I can make it work?
EDIT: solved. Basically, I removed nautilus (I don't want to use it anymore) -- it was also conflicting with caja, and set the show_desktop in apps/caja/preferences to false.
Note: setting the show_desktop to false will mean removing icons from desktop. I don't know how to put them back up, but I will look it up later.

Ah, of course, Nautilus was managing the desktop. You can turn that off from Nautilus in its preferences so you can still use it as the file manager (if I remember right). Well that's how it worked with Gnome 2 anyway. BTW, isn't Caja their name for Nautilus, so the same thing?
As for icons, I don't use or want those on my desktop so I've never looked into a replacement functionality but this might be something you have to give up to have Compiz manage the wallpapers.
p.s. If you're looking for an amazing file manager then check out SpaceFM.
It's just a file manager, right?
I'm looking at it right now, it looks amazing.

"gtk-window-decorator --replace" is set at the command field in "Window decorations" options.
My kernel version is 2.6.35-ARCH, and the video driver is ATI Catalyst 10.12 with Xorg 1.9.
Everytime I use compiz-manager, Gnome crashes.
Thank you for your time guys, I hope this information helps you to help me out.

That's not an option, I don't want to sacrifice video performance for a few effects.
Also, shouldn't be that way, why a distribution like ArchLinux, one of the best, has this kind of problems with Drivers.

You can install the packages from AUR too (you will need to compile them).
Ive compiled the packlages with GNOME support and athlon optimizations and puted on my ftp:

  • Cube atlantis compiz plugin with compiz 0.9?

    Hi all,
Does anyone know if/how the cube atlantis plugin (the one that gives you fish swimming around in the desktop cube) can be used with the 0.9 version of compiz? I know it's available in the AUR for the 0.8 release version of compiz, but I get various other problems when using the old compiz. I'm currently using compiz-manjaro from the AUR which is excellent, however the empty desktop cube is making me sad...

    cqz wrote:
Well after some searching I found that the latest version of the atlantis plugin is 0.9.5.0, and can be found at git://anongit.compiz.org/compiz/plugins/atlantis. Unfortunately compiling it failed, it seems incompatable with the compiz versions in the AUR. However by looking at the output:
/usr/include/compiz/cube/cube.h:132:46: note: candidate expects 5 arguments, 4 provided
    WRAPABLE_HND (4, CubeScreenInterface, void, cubePaintInside,
I looked for where it expected an extra argument, and added an empty variable in just to see what would happen . And it *sort of* worked!
It now compiles successfully, and actually displays the water with waves, no fishes though (worth a try).
I may attempt to fix this despite having no C++ experience (don't hold your breath lol), so if any code wizards out there could give this an eyeball and speculate how difficult it would be to make this work I'd appreciate it!
I'm pretty sure this package worked for me. It builds a few plugins including the atlantis plugin if I remember rightly.
