Problems with compiz

I'm a kde user but I installed gnome today alongside it to try out xgl.
I have two problems.
1. I use default init 5 so I tried to get gdm to work with xgl but each time gdm starts, I get an error that display 1 is used, I press ok, it tries to use display2 then says display2 is in use.
I changed default init to init 3 and I can startxgl
2. When I right click on desktop within gnome/compiz, it zooms in. I don't want it to zoom in as I need the right click menu.
So, my questions are:
1. How do I get xgl to work under gdm?
2. How do I make right click on desktop not zoom in but show the 'right click conext menu instead?

1.http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xgl#Method_1_-_GDM_uses_XGL ( use first method!! )
2.Dunno..
I use gnome and it doest zoom in.. to zoom in.. I press superkey + scrollwheel.. so check your keybindings..
PS: I use display :0 instead of the :1 which the guide and people tell me to.. cause i couldnt get it working on :1 for some reason

  • Problems with Compiz and Title bar,

    Hello , i've been trying to setup compiz with arch using the open source drives and i'v gotten it working how ever if i enable the screen decorate it freezes when i start fusion-icon and i have no button or ablity to move the windows in the title bar.
    i have a Radeon x1200 series graphics card
    also i would like to know how show the drives that are mounted on the desktop

    So you are using fusion-icon and have Compiz enabled and Emerald set as your window decorator and that's when you run into trouble.  Correct me if I'm misunderstanding your problem, but if I'm not it's probably because none of the Compiz plugins are enabled by default.  Load the Compiz control center and start enabling some of the plugins.  At minimum you need windows, move windows, and plugins like that enabled.  Hope that helps.

  • Really interesting bug with Compiz, not sure how to label it

    Hi forums, I really promise I searched around for this, so if this is a super common bug, I apologize in advance (I really wasn't sure how to even label what was happening). All I know is that when compiz is enabled, I'm getting super weird behavior in programs, mostly with terminal and system menus. The only way I know to show this is by a screenshot:
    http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h248/ … 0c7d62.png
    As you can see from the pic, there are multiple menu objects highlighted (I promise I don't have 3 mouse pointers!). I couldn't capture this via screenshot, but the highlighted elements are actually alternating between this set and another. I could show more instances of this, but I think it would just be redundant. Another (possibly related) issue is the odd behavior in terminal. When I am using terminal to do something, be it accessing the AUR repository or editing a file somewhere, or anything really, the terminal scrolls up and down exactly 1 line, repeatedly (very fast). The only other place I experience significant issues is with compizconfig settings manager (ccsm). When trying to access a different menu, the ccsm window flashes very quickly back and forth to the previous menu screen. All of these things make it incredibly difficult to make selections. My browser (chrome) is fortunately exempt from this dilemma.
    The only thing I know for sure is that this is caused by compiz. Disabling compiz (going back to xfwm or using another window manager) eliminates the issue. I hadn't had this issue until yesterday, but I really hadn't changed anything.
    Things I've tried:
    - Reinstalling compiz
    - Enabling/Disabling Emerald
    - Installing compiz-bzr
    - Fooling with metacity
    - Restarting
    Any advice or words of wisdom on this would be very appreciated

    Thanks for the reply. I'm actually using a slightly older nvidia gpu (480 GTX) with nvida-340xx, which is what nvidia recommends. I've worked with changing video driver parameters, and nothing there has seemed to change this much. I was afraid this was being caused by a mistake of mine, but it seems more and more likely that this is a problem with compiz: to test, I made a virtual machine and installed arch there (same setup as mine, only completely fresh) and I'm having the same issues. I like compiz because of the amazing ability to theme and control the general appearance of my gui. Is there a good alternative that one of you all could recommend?

  • No window decoration with Compiz using gtk-window-decorator

    Hello.
    I know this is and old problem with Compiz and ArchLinux, but no matter what I do, I can't make it work.

    Also, shouldn't be that way, why a distribution like ArchLinux, one of the best, has this kind of problems with Drivers.

  • [SOLVED] Problem With conky and or xcompmgr

    So I tried to search for this issue but i don't know quite how to explain through words on what is going on. basically i got corky installed. and so when i login my screen all around corky doesn't refresh. and i believe this to be because of xcompmgr. because thats when I installed it that is when my problem started. so here is a screenshot
    Last edited by Sicariuxs (2012-11-14 21:13:45)

    no i don't have the problem when xcompmgr is running (lol didn't mean corky!! kept thinking about league of legends xD) but the problem is that if i don't have xcompmgr running that i don't have true trnasparancy on guake or any of my other applications. what i believe it to be is that maybe conky doesn't do so well with compositing. because this also has happened to me with compiz. but i know it has to be possible to combine the two! i've seen it done all over youtube. but i keep getting this problem. any suggestions? and thanks for the quick response

  • Problem with radeon driver and Xorg

    Hoping someone can help with this problem.
    I would like to try and use the open source ati driver over the proprietary fglrx driver, however when I use this driver and I try to test my Xorg configuration it enters into X without any problems (mouse cursor appears and is functional) but when I Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to exit back to the console my screen resolution is completely distorted so that I can't read anything.  I can enter commands and can only use a reboot command to get it functional again.  I do not have this problem with the fglrx driver.
    I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop with an ATI Mobility X1400 graphics card.

    It is very possible to have direct rendering on YOUR card (r5xx) with the radeon(ati) driver, but you need a lot of packages that are still in testing, and it is a somewhat daunting task to sort through everything.
    Most importantly, you need x-server 1.5 and mesa 7.1+
    The packages that you need & are newer than core/extra are (all can be had from testing, except libgl):
    mesa >= 7.1
    xf86-input-evdev 2.0.4
    xf86-video-ati >= 6.9.0
    xorg-server >= 1.4.99.906
    libgl >= 7.1  ** has to be built from a with ABS/pkgbuild, because you need to add r300 & radeon dri-drivers in the configure **
    I have an x1650 (rv535) and have been running the radeon driver WITH direct rendering since JULY, and the performance is very good. I can run compiz without skipping a beat (while playing WOP), 2800FPS on glxgears, and ** play video WITHOUT TEARING **!!
    Please read a lot of what's going on in this forum:
    http://www.phoronix.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43 (open source ati/amd)
    I hope this gives you some hope that it can be done.
    Fight the good fight FOSS for ALL!
    BTW, the radeon(ati) driver is better than radeonhd for our cards!!!

  • Weird problem with playing videos on v2009.08 with KDE desktop

    Hi all.
    my weird problem is; i see a transparent box instead of video, in all players!
    in addition VLC immediately be killed in case of playing vids.
    i also tried that with compiz effects disabled but it didn't work.
    plz help me about this.:(

    I don't know why but changing the video output driver in smplayer and vlc corrected it. But there is no option to change video output driver in dragon player.

  • Some little problems with XFCE

    Now that Gnome2 is gone from the repos and Gnome3 is totally inconfigurable I ended up with switching to XFCE and trying to make it look like my old Gnome2 desktop. This works quite good but there are some little things that were easy to manage with Gnome's configuration tools and are a bit trickier to achieve with XFCE.
    1. [Unfixable (patch exists, bug report: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7176)] The workspace switcher applet doesn't allow to switch workspaces with mousescroll though the appropriate option is selected in its settings. I think that this is related to the fact that I'm using Compiz and it has its "viewports" instead of the workspaces since with XFWM everything works properly. Maybe there's a way to make it work with Compiz though?
    2. [Solved (controlling gmusicbrowser via dbus: http://gmusicbrowser.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=dbus_api)] I'm trying to make the multimedia keys of my keyboard work which itself is not a big deal. But XFCE doesn't offer actions to control the media player like "next track" or "play/pause". I'm using gmusicbrowser and couldn't find out how to call these actions through the shell so I don't know what command to assign to the media keys.
    3. [Unfixable (workaround: Guifications, bug report: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7591 )] The nice notification bubbles have "Show" buttons in Pidgin's libnotify notifications but they don't do anything when clicked: neither open a new chat window nor focus to an already opened one. Might be a Compiz effect again, but seems to happen with XFWM, too.
    4. [Unsolved] I can't find the xfapplet-plugin neither in the repos nor in the AUR. Has it been removed together with all the other Gnome2 stuff because of depending on gnome-panel? If so, how realistic would it be to maintain appropriate AUR packages?
    5.[Solved (by activating the "Prompt on logout" option and a launcher for xfce4-session-logout)] I thought, I would have solved this problem but now it appears again: I'm unable to deactivate XFCE's session saving.  I disabled all checkboxes in the first session settings tab and manually edited /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml and its equivalent in ~/.config to look like
    <property name="general" type="empty">
    <property name="FailsafeSessionName" type="string" value="Failsafe"/>
    <property name="SaveOnExit" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="AutoSave" type="bool" value="false"/>
    </property>
    and then removed the cached sessions from ~/.cache/sessions while no session was running. After the next boot everything was ok (apperently because of removing the cached sessions), but the boot after this one was wrong again (last session saved). Is there any success story concerning deactivating the session saving?
    Thanks,
    PhotonX

    linuxfool76: I think, quite many Gnome2 users would be interested (I am interested at least), but unfortunately I don't have any further details either... If I remember correctly there is a thread here on the forums where some user had the idea to make a repo for the whole Gnome2 - but then gave up since this would be unmaintainable. Don't know whether the chances are better for some single GTK2 apps. At least I've found file-roller2 on the AUR but who knows how long it will rest there...
    R00KIE: Yeah, that's a Compiz issue, see the bugreport in post #4.
    onexused: Thanks for the hint! Unfortunately the gnome-deps, gnome-panel and gnome-panel-bonobo are already gone from this repo, but it's a start though.
    alez: Nice idea, I used them on Windows years ago and totally forgot about their existance. Will try.

    Some of the packages are still in the official repos, so it's bigger than it could. Also maybe one could compile some things with less deps (like remove the evolution thing from the gnome-panel deps). But still looks like much bloat for a single package. What do you think?

  • Distorted X11 fonts(?) with compiz

    Hello, I face a problem with my X11 bitmap fonts which look distorted (or badly hinted?) in some places when using compiz. Since it is difficult to describe it exactly with words alone I've attached a couple of images.
    One, Two, Three
    Falling back to metacity the problem seems to disappear. Any ideas? Running on an nvidia card (195.36.15-2).
    EDIT
    Upon further investigation I found out that this problem is probably not font-specific. For example when I run xscreensaver under compiz I get this
    whereas under metacity I get this
    It seems like the contents of the window are altogether distorted.

    For what is worth, I've just found the solution to this problem via this bug report over at launchpad. The solution is to apply this patch to the compiz source distribution. It would be nice if this patch could be included in the arch package as well. I'm really sorry for the bump, but I thought someone might find this useful.

  • KDE with compiz or beryl ? Compiz still needs many gnome dependencies?

    Hi
    I'm going to install new x86_64 arch on my laptop and wondering about installing compiz - I'm using KDE and I have question - does compiz still need so many gnome deps or it's better with this now ? For now on my x86 desktop I use beryl 0.2.1 and no problem here but in the future I'll have to change beryl to compiz so I need to know this gnome-deps thing... anyone uses KDE with compiz ?
    Thanks in advance

    Just install compiz-core and the kde decorator. It only requires gconf/gtk2.
    FYI: KDE4 is introducing its own composting effects in KWin, so you won't be needing compiz/beryl if you use KDE in a few months

  • Blank windows on minimise and restore with compiz on kf5

    Hi,
    Since I have updated to kf5, I am experiencing a problem with windows being blank except for the titlebar when I minimise and then restore them. I use compiz-core 0.8.10-1. If minimise and restore the window several times then I can get the window to redraw correctly, but it seems random as to when it redraws correctly and when it is blank. This does not seem to only happen in firefox, so far I have noticed this to happen with konsole, thunderbird and several other programs. Here is a screenshot of when it looks like when it is blank:
    I have tried creating a new user and just enabling compiz, but the problem still occurs.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

    I have exactly the same problem with my 8gb ipod touch 2nd gen and have tried everything you have with no success (see http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2531624&tstart=0)
    It's definitely due to the itunes 9.2 update in June. I get the same itunes restore and sync errors you have on Windows Vista and Windows 7. It only starts restoring and syncing properly on Windows XP. I've tried downgrading to an itunes version that worked for me on Vista before, but Apple have updated the ipod touch firmware so that its not supported anymore by the earlier versions of itunes.
    Apple phone support is a waste of time. They want to charge me £25 before they are interested in helping as they say my ipod is out of warranty - but its not the ipod that's broken, its the poorly written ITUNES, so why shouldn't I get free support for itunes even though my IPOD, which is perfectly fine, is out of warranty?!
    Truth is, now apple has your money, they don't care...

    How can I solve this problem?.
    Regards.

    Crap - sorry, I typed too quick, the upstream source if fine.  But as that PKGBUILD does some odd things, I missed the problem.   The simplest (but far from best) fix is to change the lines in the package function to the following:
    svn co https://macbuntu.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/macbuntu/Macbuntu/fonts/ ./
    install -d $pkgdir/usr/share/fonts/{TTF,Type1}
    install -m644 ./Macbuntu/fonts/gbk/*.ttf $pkgdir/usr/share/fonts/TTF
    install -m644 ./Macbuntu/fonts/mac/*.ttf $pkgdir/usr/share/fonts/TTF
    install -m644 ./Macbuntu/fonts/mac/*.pfb $pkgdir/usr/share/fonts/Type1
    That is, add the proper paths to the install commands.
    EDIT: or here is one that is at least a lot closer to the right way - though it's the first svn PKGBUILD I've worked on:
    _svn=ttf-mac-fonts
    pkgname=${_svn}-svn
    pkgver=134
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="Mac fonts including Lucida Grande, Apple Garamond and other fonts from Apple"
    arch=('any')
    url="http://www.apple.com/safari/"
    license=('custom')
    depends=()
    makedepends=('subversion')
    conflicts=('macfonts' 'ttf-mac-fonts-svn')
    source=(
    "${_svn}::svn+http://svn.code.sf.net/p/macbuntu/code/Macbuntu/fonts"
    "http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/SafariWindows.pdf"

    install='ttf-mac-fonts.install'
    pkgver() {
    cd ${srcdir}/${_svn}
    svnversion | tr -d [A-z]
    package() {
    cd ${srcdir}
    install -d $pkgdir/usr/share/licenses/${_svn}
    install -m644 SafariWindows.pdf $pkgdir/usr/share/licenses/${_svn}/
    cd ${srcdir}/${_svn}
    install -d $pkgdir/usr/share/fonts/{TTF,Type1}
    install -m644 gbk/*.ttf $pkgdir/usr/share/fonts/TTF

  • Dual screen on intel with compiz

    Hi all
    I've been trying to get compiz to work with dual screen on my fully updated Arch Linux laptop for a while now. It has an Intel card and I usually set up dual screen by using xrandr. This works perfectly under metacity but crashes X under compiz. If I try to set dual screen as the default in the gnome menu and then restart X, I get it under compiz but unusably slow. I have searched google but haven't been able to find a solution. I have reproduced this problem on two different intel based laptops. Has anyone been able to get a working dual monitor setup with compiz on Intel?
