Kde4, xorg or nvidia?

Hi guys and girls, I recently did a new install and went for kde4 (not impressed).
Now I'm having a problem with the windows. When I open a menu (kmenu for example) or a new window comes up (settings) it's not rendered completely, but after a second or two it will be OK. Here's an image of what it looks like (took me a while because it's only like that for a sec or two)
and here is an extract of my xorg.conf
#Section "DRI"
# Mode 0666
#EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "ddc" # ddc probing of monitor
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "glx"
Load "bitmap" # bitmap-fonts
Load "freetype"
Load "record"
# Load "dri"
# Load "type1"
# Load "synaptics"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "All"
BoardName "All"
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
# Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
# Option "NvAGP" "1"
Option "BackingStore" "True"
Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
I tried adding DFP althought it's on analog. I've tried many other options as well. The card is a GeForce FX5200.
I appreciate the help.

It might also be worth pointing the finger at QT/KDE4, I recently compiled and tried the 4.5.0 Technical Preview of QT and the garbage behind pre-rendered menus and windows seems to be mostly gone.
You could also maybe try temporarily commenting out these options in your xorg.conf to see if it has any effect:
Option "BackingStore" "True"
Option "TripleBuffer" "True"

  • Sever issue with Xorg and Nvidia Drivers

I run a 2.6.20 kernel with Xorg and Nvidia drivers all from arch rep on a Asus NV6200. Everything works fine, except one thing. When I exit X, the monitor shuts down imediatly. It wont start up at all, not even by manual startup. I cant understand what happens. The configuration is correct, is done with the correct settings for my video-card and monitor taken directly from the documentation. I cant use my X server at all since several days ... I checked the logs and there are no EE's. Anyway ... here is the log. Help anyone can help, I cant use X at all.

No ... the problem is in the kernel that comes precompiled.
    I did this test.
The first time I installed the kernel I unloaded nvidiafb since I dont like it.
When I install nvidiafb back something strange happends. Nvidia module fails to load.
The modprobe sais it cannot find the device nvidia.ko ... but it is there!
So my best guess is, there is something with the kernel. Any ideas?
    Problem resolved, installed older driver

  • Xorg.conf nVidia ION resolution

    Sorry for my English.
    I have this board: ASUS AT5IONT-I, Atom D525, ION2, PCI-E 4X, 2xDDR3 SODIMM, Gbit LAN,E-sata, USB3.0, DVI, HDMI, Fanless, Heatpipe, Mini-ITX.
    And, trying to make HTPC.
I install Arch with openbox, but the problem is with video resolution.
    I use my 32PFL9606H Philips TV 32''.
I set proper 1920x1080 resolution is xorg.conf but "xdpyinfo | grep dimensions" reports: "dimensions:    1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters)"
    here is my xorg.conf:

    Hi !
Please don't use xorg.conf, edit the files inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ instead.
I also have an ION board and have working HDMI connection with audio at 1920x1080 using the below configuration. Remove your xorg.conf and then edit these files:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "True"
    HorizSync 14-70
    VertRefresh 48-62
    Modeline "1920x1080-TV" 148.35 1920 2008 2152 2300 1080 1084 1089 1125
    Option "DPMS"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    Device "Default nvidia Device"
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1920x1080-TV"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default nvidia Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
    Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
    Option "UseEdidDpi" "False"
    Option "DPI" "100 x 100"
    EndSection
Please note that the above Modeline works on my TV (a 22'' low cost brand one) but I cannot guarantee it will work on yours.
Try that first, then if it doesn't work, try to generate one using the cvt command, and replace the Modeline:
    cvt 1920 1080
it should output something like this:
    # 1920x1080 59.96 Hz (CVT 2.07M9) hsync: 67.16 kHz; pclk: 173.00 MHz
    Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
If this method doesn't work either, try the method explained here (which is the one I've first used to find the right Modeline). Its tricky method, and requires a bit of work and lot of patience ... just don't give up
Finally, a little bonus . To have working HDMI sound, I have to put these lines in /etc/asound.conf:
    /etc/asound.conf
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 3
Again, you may need to change the device index in your case. You can list alsa devices using aplay -l command:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]
    Subdevices: 2/2
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: VT1708S Digital [VT1708S Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 0/1

  • Setting up Bumblebee - xorg.conf and /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia

I have installed Bumblebee and the Nvidia drivers on my Asus N53SV laptop. I am able to run programs such as glxspheres using Optirun. However, I am not sure what to do next if I want to render my desktop using my discrete video card (GT540M) instead of through ordinary Intel graphics.
Should I copy the file /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
    Thanks for your help,
    - mark

I don't see why you would do that. The point of bumblebee is to avoid using the nvidia card unless you start the program with 'optirun'. If you want to render your desktop and use the nvidia card all the time, just don't use bumblebee and directly use the nvidia driver.
If you really really want to use bumblebee, I guess you could set your login manager to use a xinitrc method, and put optirun in front of the command that launch your desktop.

  • Problem with Xorg and nvidia drivers

Hi! I recently installed arch and am trying to get a gui working. Sadly I have had little success. I have a nvidia geforce 750m which I believe was designed to use optimus. I have installed nvidia and bumblebee, and blacklisted nouveau. However, when I attempt to startx it doesn't work, and in the log file it tells me nvidia can't load the GLX and to make sure I am using the nvidia vendor version. So I looked and it seems I am not, instead I have the Xorg version. Unfortunatey I have no idea how to fix this... and today, google was not my friend despite several hours of searching.
    dmesg | grep nvidia says:
    nvidia_frontend_open: minor 0, module->open() failed, error -5
I don't know what that error code means, or if that's even important.
I have also installed kde, which does nothing because there's no x server to do anything with.
    Anyone have any advice? Thanks

    Hi js404!
If I am not entirely wrong you should try to use this small piece of code:
    nvidia-xconfig

    Hello!
I am using a archlinux distribution for about 5 years. There was sometime problems but now it is very unstable. Every reboot I have a crash of Xorgs and with this a crash of system. Log:

About 1 month ago it looks like restart of Xorgs when I press enter key. Alway ENTER key. After some updates/nvidia driver combinations - doesn't change anything. Now after fresh reinstall (well crashes destroys my ext3 filesystem an I need to reinstal the root file system) there are crashes, but now, every freeze I have to restart system. Now I am switchingo into ubuntu, I will try to check sometimes if something changed.
Cashes repeats every reboot from... maby 3-4 months. Now I can say my system is not stable, I use this in work - so this situation is really bad.

  • Xorg freezes, video lags, high log output (linux,xorg-server,nvidia)

    Hey,
It seems the up-to-date system doesn't work for my Laptop anymore. Wasn't too sure where to post this, as I couldn't test this anywhere else yet.
I experience extreme lags in Xorg (apparently due to high log output to Xorg.0.log as mentioned here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1305939 ). These lags seem to be related to Xorg, the linux kernel and maybe something else I haven't found yet.

I tested the up-to-date nvidia and nouveau drivers, to no avail. They both spam Xorg.0.log as soon as I watch a video, move a window or do something similiar "hi-res" in Gnome, leading to lags in all applications and X itself until it dies from high CPU usage + high chip temperature.
So I started downgrading my system.
I tested linux 3.9.9 but that didn't do the trick.
Currently I'm on linux 3.8.8-2, nvidia 313.30-5 and xorg-server 1.13.3-1, xf86-input-evdev 2.7.3-2 and xf86-input-wacom 0.20.0-1. This seems to be stable so far, the extreme X log output persists though, as soon as an external monitor is plugged in:
    [ 234.963] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Display (DELL2407WFPHC (DFP-1)) does not support NVIDIA 3D
    [ 234.963] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Vision stereo.
    [ 234.963] (**) NVIDIA(0): Using HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges from the EDID for display
    [ 234.963] (**) NVIDIA(0): device DELL2407WFPHC (DFP-1) (Using EDID frequencies has
[ 234.963] (**) NVIDIA(0): been enabled on all display devices.)
I tried nvidia drivers with and without my xorg.conf.d snippets, but that didn't change anything.
I'm kinda clueless... which package is the odd one out? All of them? At this point I wouldn't even know where to file a bug report.
I've been away for a couple of months and didn't upgrade the system too often in between, but this behavior is really odd.
Any ideas/ help would be highly appreciated!

Okay... I can definitely revise my statement about the Xorg.0.log. It has been the same since yesterday... so the spamming is gone!
I'd really like to find out if this is a linux kernel or a direct Xorg problem (of version 1.14 and above).

  • Xorg.conf , nvidia 96xx and dual head failure

i cant get Xorg to work with nvidia driver at all.
    here is where i am.
    setup aurch linux [X]
setup xserver with NV driver 1 head[X]
    setup dual head[]
ok so i cant even get nvidia drivers to work or dual head on the NV driver.
i dont have an xorg.conf setup but i have tried the xorg.conf from my fedora setup but it just black screened.
    here is my error log.

Ive tried everything i could think of or what arch wiki could. I came to aurch linux to learn more about linux (fedora holds your hand to much.) but i dont think i can figure this one out on my own.

    serverman,
let me see if I understand your situation.
You are using the nvidia drivers and want to setup a dual screen with independent screens (?).
Without a xorg.conf one screen should work out of the box with one screen.
For the proprietary drivers you will need a minimal xorg.conf:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Configured Video Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
    DefaultDepth 24
    EndSection
This still has only one screen, but can you try it and tell what happens ?

  • [SOLVED] KDE won't start after Xorg update(nvidia driver)

After update, I disabled hotplug, with :
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
    EndSection
kdm starts normally, i can write login/password, i see kde boot splash, then desktop shows and after about 10 secs it is killed and goes back to login screen.
I think the problem is with hal, because (Xorg.0.log):
(II) config/hal: Adding input device Video Bus
    (EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(II) config/hal: Adding input device Video Bus
    (EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed

    (EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(II) config/hal: Adding input device Macintosh mouse button emulation

    Also (.xsession-errors)

Well, I rebuilded my xorg.conf with
    Xorg -configure
and it started working, even with evdev driver, just had to add
    Option "AllowEmptyInput" "False"
in section "ServerFlags". I'm not really sure what caused that error.

  • Kdm big delay with Xorg 7 & Nvidia

I just made a fresh install ( my first actually) with the latest Arch including XORG 7 m the Nvidia binary driver and KDE 3.5.1 .
Everything works , I'm very impressed with the Arch boot speed but there's a really big problem with KDM starting . There's a huge lag , a delay between X starting and seeing the Nvidia splash screen and KDM appearing on the desktop .
It seems to load something from the harddrive but I don't think it should take that long . I previously never had this problem with KDE in Gentoo , Kubuntu or PCLOS ( but didn't try it with KDE 3.5.1 and Xorg 7 though ) ,
      Any ideas ?
    P.S.  KDM log :

I checked and yes DMA is on and the mode seems to be udma6 :
    DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5 *udma6
Maybe this is just normal because I see that when I restart the X server without rebooting everything happens much faster ( probably takes everything from RAM ) .
Still I don't really like and I'm wondering if I can't somehow speed it up .
Could it have something to do with the fonts or the font server . Hope I'm not talking nonsense here .
I find it very odd that it now takes that much to start x but maybe it's just because Arch boots up so fast     .
Here's a bootchart maybe it will make things clearer because I didn't understand too much from it :

  • Set up systemd with bumblebee. Now Xorg loads nvidia module.

I have the nvidia module blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
I have bbswitch set to turn the card off when it loads up using "options bbswitch load_state=0 unload_state=0" in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
I have confirmed that the bbswitch module believes these configuration options are set, and I know that the card is successfully turned off when Bumblebee loads up.
But when I load into my login manager (SLiM), the card gets powered on and the module is loaded up. I don't think bbswitch is involved.
Is there any way to trace exactly which process loads a module?
Is there something simple I'm missing?

Thanks for the heads up! But that introduces the problem that I won't be set up for DKMS. Seems like a lose-lose situation with how often Arch updates the kernel. My cheap hack works for now. When I get a chance I may try to get the best of both worlds and build a dkms-nvidia-bumblebee of my own.

  • Screen refresh problem in kde4 with konsole, nvidia and compiz

    Hi,
I have for the last month or so been experiencing really slow screen refreshes in konsole. What happens is that the text often doesn't get refreshed and you end up with the cursor not on the correct line, blocks all over the konsole window and blank areas of text. Minimising and maximising the konsole windows seems to refresh them as does using compiz's scale plugin. As I spend pretty much all day using konsole this has been really annoying. I have today however found a fix in this bug report:- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … mments=all
This was to go into ccsm, enable workaronds under utility and make sure "Force syncronization between X and GLX" is ticked.
Thought I'd share is this has really been doing my head in, so hope this helps someone else!

  • [Solved]Xorg 1.6 with nvidia 180.44 2D performance painfully slow

    Hi folks,
Since the latest upgrade of Xorg and Nvidia all screen refreshes have become visibly very slow. Anything that has to redraw the whole screen takes a full second and my cpu usage jumps to 15%. The wierd thing is that glxgears is getting 200fps and looks perfectly smooth. Direct rendering is enabled and the client and server versions of the driver match. There are no errors in the Xorg.0.log apart from warnings about ACPI
I am using an Nvidia 6200 in TwinView mode with 2 identical monitors.
    Here's my files/logs:

Also try to run some game to see whether it will work.
    Already done:
    direct rendering: Yes
And I'm at work, no games sorry
I lowered the colour depth to 16bpp and it's a little bit faster on window refreshes. It's good enough to be usable but it's still annoying.

  • [Solved] xorg "no screens found" on laptop with nvidia + intel Optimus

Startx gives fatal server error:(EE) no screens found
After installing arch on my laptop, I followed the xorg arch wiki to install the Xwindow system.
    I installed  xorg-server, startx
lspci -k | grep -A -2 -i "VGA" shows two graphic cards (see below). I guess the I am using the NVIDIA.
    I installed nvidia-utils-337.12-1 , nvidia-337.12-1, nvidia-libgl-337.12-1
    After that I ran nvidia-xconfig
    startx gives the above error.
    What can I try next?
    Best,

    Hi Karol,
Thank you for the suggestion. I read the wiki Nvidia#No_screens_found_on_a_laptop.2FNVIDIA_Optimus .
It says "On a laptop, if the NVIDIA driver cannot find any screens, you may have an NVIDIA Optimus setup : an Intel chipset connected to the screen and the video outputs, and a NVIDIA". This seems to be the case for my latop.
The wiki suggests three options to get around the problem:
    1) NVIDIA drivers now offer Optimus support since 319.12 Beta [[3]] with kernels above and including 3.9.
    2) Another solution is to install the Intel driver to handle the screens
    3) Enter the BIOS and changed the default graphics setting from 'Optimus' to 'Discrete' and the install NVIDIA drivers
    I tried them all:
    1) I had NVIDIA driver version 337 installed, but I don't know how to turn on Optimus support
    3) I check my bios settings, but there is no such option
    2) I removed the nvidia drivers and then installed intel drivers. I removed /etc/x11/xorg.conf
startx now find screens. I guess there is no 2d or 3d acceleration, but it works
    Thank you
    Sjoerd

EDIT:thank everyone helping me, and I have solved my problems.
NOTE:my laptop is actualty equiped with dual graphics and using wiki  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus it work prefect!
my new laptop is ASUS A550JK which is reported has one graphics card(Nvidia GTX 850m)
first of all , I'm confused how many graphics cards in it really because lspci's output is this:

    whats the fact?
I try to collect imformations (in China network) about this laptop  ,all webpage and even ASUS information never say this laptop has dual graphics cards, and I have tried bumblebee itreturned xdisplay error..
EDIT:maybe i am wrong, I have found two webpages that describe this laptop(ASUS A550JK4710)actually is hybrid graphics.
secondly . Im trying to install xorg after just install package nvidia and configed using nvidia-xconfig. when running startx it reports:

Thank you very much and I have deleted these words already. Im sorry to annoy someone...
I try to collect imformations (in China network) about this laptop  ,all webpage and even ASUS information never say this laptop has dual graphics cards, and I have tried bumblebee itreturned xdisplay error..
EDIT:maybe i am wrong, I have found two webpages that describe this laptop(ASUS A550JK4710)actually is hybrid graphics.
and xorg error seems due to the deriver?

Welcome to the forums.  Please note that the "NEED HELP PLEASE" especially in all caps is not needed in your title - and it might well be annoying to many forum users which might make them less happy to try to help.
Second, the lspci ouput indicates you have hybrid graphics.  I don't have much experience with these systems, but they are well documented in the wiki.  As far as I know you can't use *just* the NVIDIA (but I might be wrong) - I'm pretty sure if you want to use just one of the video cards you can use just the intel.  Hopefully someone with experience with hybrid graphics will confirm or correct this.
    For now, see here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
EDIT: after reading that wiki page I'm more doubtful of my own statements so I've crossed them out.  But it seems there are various steps needed to configure the use of the nvidia drivers.
