Kdeinit4 crashes on logout

Hello guys, I have a problem with kdeinit4, it keeps crashing when I logout.
This is the gdb output.

Everything is up-to-date from the [testing] forum of course.

Hello Guys,
I have this on several different machines (some desktops, my laptop) with kde4.7 and testing repo enabled. There has been some rumour on the mailing list about similar things. See http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 22062.html and the following link to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=284989. Maybe this is the cause?
So far I have no clue what to do but now I know I am not alone
And yes, I have read the thread about phonon-vlc being the culprit but I use pulseaudio and gstreamer as the backend. So I guess this is not my case.

  • [SOLVED] kdeinit4 crashing on startup (and a few other new installat..

I have just switched from openSuSE to ArchLinux, and needless to say, am a bit disappointed as to why I didn't make the switch before. ArchLinux is just pure awesome and everything seems to be working fine after a mile of manual readings and tweaking around configuration files. There are just a few issues I'm facing:
    1. kdeinit4 crashes on startup: I get a KCrash dialog which says that it has crashed. The title says 'The KDE Daemon has crashed'. This is the backtrace I was able to generate from that: http://pastebin.com/L7C9iwPY
    2. KDE does not store any session data: I don't like those pesky launchers on my plasma panel (the one with the taskbar and all), so I removed them. But after the reboot, they reappear. I have to remove them every session. With yakuake, I have to change the height and width of the console at every reboot, as it just switched back to the default values at every session start. Some settings do seem to persist though, for example, I have my plasma panel set at the top screen edge. This stays the same for every reboot. I have a feeling this problem has something to do with the KDE daemon crashing.
    3. Nepomuk keeps on crashing: I keep on getting this notification error on startup: http://imgur.com/PyGpQ
Other than this, everything seems to work with my laptop.
    Information about my laptop
    Model: Dell Studio 1555
KDE version: KDE 4.7.00 (from repository)
    Output of `uname -a`: Linux meanmachine 3.0-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 17 21:55:57 CEST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Also, for now to solve the problem, I am making kdeinit not play any notification sounds. Since phonon-vlc is crashing KDE applications (from a look around the web, it is not only kdeinit that is crashing due to the phonon-vlc bug), this must be when it tries to play some media, which obviously is the startup notifications.
Go to System Settings > Application and System Notifications > Player Settings and select 'No Audio Output'. Works for me.
Or one can just switch to phonon-gstreamer, but in that case banshee and rhythmbox crash for no reason while trying to play media.
Now KDE is storing session data [was a huge problem since I could not use custom power management profiles.. pretty difficult with a laptop], but Nepomuk is still crashing. Not really buying the whole semantic desktop thing.. so just going to live with it till an update resolves it

  • [SOLVED]: xserver crash on logout.

Note: This problem is solved. The video setting in BIOS is generally set to "Auto" which takes away 72 MB RAM and only 312 MB is available for the OS. When I checked new Ubuntu 9.04 Beta Live CD I changed the BIOS setting to minimum to maximise the available memory for the Live CD. The same setting (inadvertently) continued for the installed Linuxes. I changed the BIOS setting once again to "Auto" and crash has disappeared.
I am using Archlinux since Oct 08. I have multiple WMs and GDM for logout/login. I am unable to logout and re-login to another WM since about a month (or may be more). I have latest stable packages of Arch.
My graphic card is ATI Radeon IGP 345M which works on Xorg radeon driver.
In order to sort out this problem I disabled GDM in /etc/rc.conf and used startx. After killing X either through logout or Ctrl+Alt+Bksp I could not start X once again but got this error:
    error setting MTRR (base = 0xdc000000, size = ...... type=1) Invalid arguement.

    $ dmesg | grep mtrr

Please note that last line 'reg07' is getting added after startx. I think if I can somehow delete this last line may be I can start xserver once again.

I don't know if this is going to help or not, but have you tried adding the:

Hope you can solve this problem
I added 'nopat enable_mtrr_cleanup' to grub line but my xserver still crashes on re-start. Perhaps the crash is not related to MTRR.
Adding that line, however, reduces the no of entries in /proc/mtrr:
    $ cat /proc/mtrr # After startx

  • (Workaround-ed) Xorg crashes on logout with latest nVidia driver

I can enter a DE through the login just fine after a clean startup or a reboot. It's just that after I logout using Ctrl Alt Backspace, it just keeps crashing and won't bring me to the login screen again.

  • OSX Mavericks (new 3.1 Core i7 iMac) crashes on logout and goes to a blank white screen.... arrghhh

Just started happending after updating to Maverick
Works fine but if left unattended for 1 hour and you logout of current user on the top right hand side near spotlight, you can't login with a new user, the screen crashed to a bank white screen....
    Any help is appreciated!!!!!!!

I had a similar problem, and connected it to a posted software problem related to hard disks from Westeren Digital. I uninstalled alle the software from Western Digital. The disk still works as normal, and the logout problem disappeared. It is a software problem that will probably be fixed by WD and/or Apple soon, but until then you may uinstall it temporarily. Or permanently, I do not need that extra WD software anyway.

  • [Solved] Running exec i3 causes crash and logout

I am trying to get the i3 WM installed on my machine.  I have X installed and working.  I was able to perform the test with xterms specified in the beginners guide.  I installed i3 with 'sudo pacman -S i3' and created a .xnitrc file in my home directory by copying it from the skel directory.  It is supposed to run the command 'exec i3' after I login from xdm but it is failing.  It seems to not do anything but log me out.  If I am booted into XDM and login I just get bounced back to the login screen.  If I am on the console and try to run 'exec i3' it just logs me out and doesn't start.  If I run 'exec i3' from an xterm it crashes the terminal window.
EDIT:  this occurs with all WMs I have tried in addition to i3 such as ratpoison.

I don't think that is it.  I have dbus installed and its in my DAEMONS array.  I actually just reinstalled arch completely and still have the same problem even without a display manager installed.  If i use 'exec i3' from the command line it logs be out of the current shell session.  startx works though still.  Could it be a driver issue or maybe a bad release?

  • [SOLVED, sort of] After nvidia upgrade, computer crashes at logout

My video card is Nvidia GEForce 6150 LE, rev 2.  After I upgraded nvidia  on 10/10/08, my computer crashes whenever I log out, and I have to shut down the power and reboot.  This happens on kde and gnome, and also when I press Control-Alt-Backspace.  I tried the new nvidia-173xx drivers, but they didn't work at all.  Finally I went back to vesa, and that works.

Problem solved, sort of.  I noticed that the Flint, Michigan mirror was 15 days out of sync, and I downloaded the old nvidia driver from there.  Now everything works fine, as before.  Here's the page that tells the status of mirrors:
    http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html
Still, it would be nice to use the new driver.   If anyone else has this problem and has missed out on the out-of-sync mirrors, send me an email and I can give you the package.

  • Kde 4.7 no desktop cube and kdeinit4 crash on every startup

    Hello,
Just did a pacman -Syu and come up with the new 3.0.1 kernel along with kde 4.7
    I now have 2 issues:
1- Pressing CTRL-F11 does not activate the 3D cube desktop. I double checked the settings and it's there. Other effects work fine.
2- On each and every login, I get a crash window for kde4init process.
    Any idea?
    Thank you.
    Pitou!

i have the exact same problem on my brand new installation, but i have also no solution yet.
please post it here if you solved it!

  • Xorg crashes after logout

I have recently installed Archlinux under VirtualBox running on a Windows Vista Host machine.  The basic install went fine, but when after installing Xorg and KDE I found I get segmentation faults when logging out of KDE.
    My basic process was...
    1. Install base Arch system.
    2. Update entire system (pacman first then the whole system itself)
    3. Install Xorg
    4. Install KDE
    5. Install VirtualBox Guest Additions
I am pretty certain this is purely an Xorg issue (not related to the window manager) as I have tried Gnome as well with similar results.
I am a newbie when it comes to Arch so if this is a known issue and workaround, forgive me...

I realized that there was a 'virtualbox-additions' target available through pacman so I created a new clean virtual machine and installed Arch and used the 'virtualbox-additions' from the Arch repositories instead of installing the ones provided by VirtualBox.  So my process was...
    1. Install base Arch
    2. Update the entire system (pacman first, then the rest of the system)
    3. Install Xorg
    4. Install KDE
    5. Install 'virtualbox-additions' from the Arch repositories.
While I didn't get a segmentation fault from Xorg when logging out of KDE, the installed virtualbox-additions where not compatible with VirtualBox (at least not completely), i.e. Xorg/KDE was not able to be resized correctly.  So I then tried to install the guest additions included with VirtualBox manually.  This fixed the resizing issue but then the seg fault was back.

  • Windows XP Access Violation

Has anyone had any issues with Microsoft Windows XP errors referencing access violations of memory? I have had this problem since the first time I installed Boot Camp Beta, and have yet to hear a reply from any of the Geniuses. In essence, I receive random but recurring errors when opening applications in Windows XP on my Boot Camp partition. Sometimes it's when I open Internet Explorer, sometimes it's when I open Wordpad, sometimes it's another application. Additionally, I consistently receive this error when closing certain enterprise level business intelligence software. I've done research and found that this is a result of code that tries to store null values in reserved memory, but that's about it. I'd really like to know if Apple has any solutions for this issue, and if not, what that will mean for those users who have purchased - or will purchase - a MacBook with the promise of being able to run Windows XP or Vista on the Intel-based MacBooks. If this issue is pervasive and not remedied, then it makes the real prospects of using a MacBook in a business setting running Windows impossible.

Reinstalling OS X isn't going to help with Windows. There is something that is special about your Windows that is making it unstable. That something may be a driver required to run it on a Mac. Still, that driver lives on the Windows side. You might have more luck running in Parallels or VMWare as the drivers for those generic, simulated machines might be more stable.
Yes, it is technically possible for MacOS X to become corrupted. That type of corruption is almost always caused by either 1) FileVault, 2) disk cloning, 3) flaky kernel extensions. Still, it is much less common than in Windows. For example, Acrobat Reader crashes on logout on my Dell work PC. It has done this as long as I can remember on every work PC I've had at 3 companies in as many states. I have the best IT support money can buy. It is not a problem, Acrobat just crashes on logout. I just have to remember to clean up the dialog boxes so the log off can complete to avoid some corporate or gov security regulation.

  • Random results with PHD setup--how to stop?

    Hi,
We set up a couple of groups to use PHDs. These worked OK, except that some 10.5 clients hang after syncing, and must be forced to re-start.
    Anyone else experiencing this?
And the most puzzling problem: groups that have never been set up to use PHDs, but haver their home directories on the same drive, have started syncing, and furthermore, are creating user accounts on wireless MacBook clients (10.5). How can this be stopped if it isn't turned on? Is there a database that can be deleted so PHD is totally disabled?
    Many thanks for any insights...
    ...Tom

In retrospect, enabling Portable Home Directories (at the suggestion of an Apple Engineer/rep) caused a multitude of problems for us. After disabling this for all accounts, the client computers continued to make local accounts and many crashed on logout, waiting for the homefolder synchronization. Maybe it was our corrupted LDAP database, but we had to completely erase and rebuild the servers over the summer to get rid of this pest, which ruined the computing experience for the last half of the year.
We now use guest logins only, and every student carries a thumbdrive to save work on. This speeds things up incredibly, saves students from wasting valuable time, and enhances the computing experience.
What makes the guest account experience tolerable is the creation of custom guest accounts, then imaging all clients so they're all the same. Be sure to make the backup suggested if you use this method:

  • Appserver 7.0 crashes every time I logout console on Win2000

    Hi all,
I use appserver on a few Win2000 Servers. Everything works fine except that appserver crashes every time I logout Windows console on any server.
I receive the message in the Event Viewer:
Server: SunAppServer7.0-domain1_server1 CORE0125: The server terminated abnormally with error code 0. An attempt will be made to restart it.
After restarting the appserver works as usual until next logout.
    What's the matter?

    Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tip & Tricks Forum, and few will see your post here. I will try to have it moved to the main PrE Forum.
I would start with this ARTICLE, which begins with a checklist on getting PrE setup on one's computer. It then goes into steps to tuneup the computer, and OS, and finishes with many links to help one troubleshoot issues.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Logout crashes system when using fglrx [SOLVED]

    Hi guys,
I admit I'm a little annoyed about X related issues with Arch on my thinkpad T400, none of choice is working totally fine on it now. It has ATI HD3470 discrete card and Intel X4500 integrated card, I've tried all available dirvers: xf86-video-ati, xf86-video-radeonhd, catalyst(fglrx) and xf86-video-intel. Here are problem descriptions:
    1, Intel X4500 + xf86-video-intel
This scheme is the best working choice at present. Everything is fine, except cannot pass 3D acceleration test in Cedega. glxinfo shows direct rendering is "yes", and openGL direct rendering test in Cedega is passed. With 3D acceleration test failed, I cannot run any games in it. Glxgears shows 420FPS with Intel X4500
    2, ATI HD3470 + xf86-video-ati / xf86-video-radeonhd
Annoying! I'm not sure how well the open source driver support my card, surely they are working, but only provide very basically performance. 3D acceleration test in Cedega cannot pass either, while direct rendering is "yes" in glxinfo too! Besides this, the really annoying thing is laptop FAN is keep running with these two drivers, even CPU occupation is ZERO. Glxgears shows 370FPS with radeon or radeonhd.
    3, ATI HD3470 + catalyst
This scheme provides best performance, that 3D acceleration test in Cedega can pass, and the game plays smoothly. However, this driver has a frustrated problem: It works fine when first boot up, but if I logout, then X would crash to a black screen, and both keyboard and mouse lost response. Only press power button for 3 seconds to hardly shutdown can leave the mess. More details can refer to: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62413
    Glxgears shows 1200FPS with fglrx.
I guess a comparison is suitable here, with fglrx+ubuntu installed on this laptop, Glxgears shows 3200FPS, and it works totally fine without logging out to black screen problem either. I'm a newbie switched from Ubuntu to Arch, I love the Arch way. But I have to say, I DO NOT like the Arch's X way.
Hope someone who has the same hardware or even the same laptop can help me. Though I don't like to configure X, I like the feeling manually solve problems. Any advice or suggestion or even criticism will be highly appreciated. My xorg.conf are attached in pastebin:

I reinstalled catalyst and now using fglrx driver. I reproduced the problem and paste X server log here, I hope anyone have or had this problem would come on to solve this, seems this problems is old, common and nasty all together.

    Fatal server error:
    Caught signal 4.  Server aborting
    Reproduce problem as follows:
1, Install fglrx as driver for ATI 3470 on LAPTOP
2, Boot up and login gnome will succeed every time.
    3, Logout:
    3.1 If using GDM
Logout then it goes into a black screen, both keyboard and mouse lost response, only hard shutdown helps.
    3.2 If on runlevel 3
Logout succeeds, will back into user console. Log into normal users in other consoles succeeds. If now run startx, it will generate above quoted error: "Fatal Server Error: Caught signal 4". After this, commands such as su, ps, sudo, or as root log into other consoles will cause Segment Fault, or even Kernel panic. As these situations happen, only hard shutdown helps.
I've also tried these workarounds found with google or in other forums:
1, Edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf to set X server always restart value equal 1.
Does not help. Actually, this problem might not caused by gdm, because I boot into runlevel 3 would also have this problem.
2, Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to add "nopat" option into kernel line
Does not help, the problem remains.
3, Build catalyst 8.11 with ABS
Does not help, with catalyst-8.11 X will boot into black screen for the first time too. I'm not sure if I build it correctly, it has a 2.6.27.patch in abs, but I'm using 2.6.28 kernel.
4, Use D-sub instead of DVI
I'm on LAPTOP, don't have a choice to change to D-sub connector, so I don't know if this help.
5, Remove .Xauthority file or edit /etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh file as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy … bug/118605 suggests
Does not help either, It might not be X authority's problem. But I'm not quite sure.
Alright, I hope these details have made myself clear, because of my poor English. Hope you guys help, thanks in advance!
